Illegal Hunting Charges
A North Bend-area man was arrested
Wednesday evening by an Oregon State
Police (OSP) Fish & Wildlife trooper on
an allegation he shot and killed a black
bear on July 9 and left it to waste. The
investigation is continuing and additional charges may be pending. On July
18, 2012, OSP Senior Trooper Levi Harris received a tip regarding the illegal
killing of a black bear by an identified
suspect on rural property outside of the
North Bend city limits. Subsequent investigation led Harris to the property
where evidence was found substantiating
the tip. At approximately 6:25 p.m.,
Harris contacted the property owner,
JOHN ALLEN GIBSON, age 42, at his
place of employment in Coos Bay and
took him into custody for Taking Black
Bear Closed Season. GIBSON was
lodged in the Coos County Jail. Information developed during the investigation indicates the bear weighed approximately 200 pounds and its remains were
dumped on state forest property a few
miles from the suspect's residence. It's
unknown at this time if the bear was
male or female.
Burglary charges
Two were taken into custody and more
arrests are possible following investigation into a Central Oregon Coast burglary in late June. According to a news
release from the Lincoln Co. Sheriff's
Dept., over $10,000 in property was
stolen during the burglary at a residence
on Hamer Road in the Siletz area June
25. Information gathered led investigators to the home of 22-year old Kayla
Dawn Whyte, Toledo, July 1, where
some of the stolen property was recovered. Whyte was charged with Theft by
Receiving. In July 2, 26-year old Justin
Lee Webber, Toledo, was located at the
Eureka Cemetery in Newport. He was
charged with Burglary I, Aggravated
Theft I and Theft I. Both were lodged in
the county jail at Newport.
Vehicle chase
A late night vehicle pursuit on the Central Oregon Coast Thursday, July 19,
ended when the 1995 Ford pickup truck
entered a dead-end alley in an industrial
park and then fled on foot into a heavily
wooded area. According to a news release from the Newport Police Dept., a
search of the area was conducted by law
enforcement agencies, but the driver
could not be found. The truck was registered to Dahl's Disposal Company of
Toledo. A check by police at the company's business location revealed a heavily damaged gate and fence. "It was
apparent that the truck had been driven
through the fence." The investigation is
continuing.

Sleepy accident
A male who died in prison at the age of 66 from lung cancer has
been identified as the main suspect in two double cold case homicides on the Central Oregon Coast involving teenage girls back in
the 1990s. According to a news release from Lincoln Co. District
Attorney Rob Bovett, Bobby Jack Fowler was sentenced to prison in

in the United States dating back to the 1970s. Nineteen year old
Sheila Swanson and 17-year old Melissa Sanders, both of Sweet

Eddyville on October 10, 1992. On January 28, 1995, two 16-year old
girls went missing in the area of NW 56th Street in Newport. The
bodies of Jennifer Esson and Kara Leas were found in a wooded
area north of the city, February 15, 1995. Fowler was arrested June
28, 1995 after a woman escaped from him by jumping, unclothed
and with a rope tied around her ankle, out of a second story motel
window.
