2013 Mershon Association Annual Meeting Scheduled for July 27th
Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Please join us for our 87th Mershon Association Annual Meeting and
Reunion. Our Mershon Association has met every year since 1923, except during World War II.
When: Saturday, July 27, 2013, 10 AM to 4 PM.
Where: Lawrence Headquarters Branch of the Mercer County Library,
2751 Brunswick Pike (US 1-Business), Lawrenceville, NJ 08648.
The library is located at the intersection of US 1-Business and Darrah Lane.
We will be in Community Meeting Rooms 1 & 2.
Dining: We will have catered box lunches at noon for our Saturday meeting. Saturday night, we plan to
gather for a group dinner at a local restaurant.
Special Programs: Mershon Association Genealogist Teresa Mershon of Obetz, OH, will present a program on
how to use ancestry.com to access our Mershon genealogy database. Teresa will assist individuals with their
family history and answer questions.
Laura Nawrocik, staff member at the Lawrence Branch of the Mercer County Library, will give a presentation
on how the Mershon Association archives are being incorporated into the Lawrence Township Archives at the
library. Also, how the archives can be accessed for research.
Brothers David10 Mershon of Williamsburg, VA, and Daniel10 Mershon of Doylestown, PA, will make a
presentation on the interesting story of the Mershon Patent Shaking Grate Works, started in 1830 by their
ancestor, Daniel6 Mershon. This furnace and stove company was in business in Philadelphia for 150 years,
until 1980. Family members also had a bicycle business in Philadelphia.

Show & Tell: Many of us have stories about our Mershon ancestors, personal mementos and old
photographs that would be of interest to our extended family. There will be a opportunities at our meeting to
share family stories and mementos.
Special Talents: We would like to invite persons attending our meeting to share their special talents with our
family. This could include musical talents, dance, artwork, quilting, photography or almost anything suitable
for family viewing. Please let Joan Swearer of Rahway, NJ, know if you have a talent you would like to share

Silent Auction
Artist Martha Ford of Greenfield, IL, an Andrew3 Mershon descendant, will offer her recent
painting of the former Andrew Mershon Colonial Tavern for sale by silent auction during
our meeting as a fund raiser for our Mershon Association. This 16”x20” painting will be on
display during our meeting. A photograph is above. The 20”x24” frame has a brass plaque
saying: “Andrew3 Mershon Tavern.” Each person attending our meeting will have the
opportunity to receive a private bidding number if they wish to make a silent written bid
during our meeting. This could be exciting!

Mershon Southern Chapter to Meet in Pigeon Forge, TN, on May 17 & 18, 2013
Arrangements have been made for the 2013 Mershon Southern Chapter reunion. It will be held on
Friday & Saturday, May 17th & 18th. We will be staying at Country Cascades in Pigeon Forge, TN. I have
reserved a block of 20 rooms at $77.00 a night for May 16th, 17th, and 18th. Each room has two queen
beds in them. To make reservations for a hotel room call 800-223-6707 (Smoky Mountain Resorts)
and be sure to tell them that it is for the Mershon Family Reunion to get your discount.
We have a meeting room for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 7:00 am - 11:59 pm. Bring any
pictures, books, family information, etc., that you may have, so we can enjoy them throughout the days
and evenings. We don’t seem to have enough time after the meeting on Saturday.
Friday night (May 17th) we will be attending the “Hatfield & McCoy” dinner show at 5:00 PM. After the
meeting on Saturday (May 18th) we will attend the “Smokey Mountain Opry” at 3:00 PM and have
dinner afterward at a restaurant of our choice. The cost for both shows is $64.00 including tax and
gratuity (Saturday evening dinner not included).
I will need to have your money for the shows and Friday dinner no later than May 1st.

The 2012 Annual Meeting of the Association of the Descendants of Henry Mershon convened on Saturday
morning, August 4, at 9:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall of the Slackwood Presbyterian Church, 2020 Brunswick
Ave. (US 1 – Business) Lawrenceville, NJ 08648. There were 36 persons attending.
Following an invocation by Elaine Tredinnick and the pledge of allegiance, each family group introduced
themselves.
Morning Program: Retired high school history teacher Larry Kidder of Ewing, NJ, spoke on the First
Hunterdon County Militia Regiment during the Revolutionary War. Larry explained the regiment was
formed shortly after April 1775 when fighting broke out between the British Army and American militia in
Massachusetts. There were at least 16 Mershon descendants and relatives who served in the First
Hunterdon, including Aaron4 Mershon, killed on August 27, 1776 while fighting against the British in the
Battle of Brooklyn on Long Island, NY. The First Hunterdon also participated the Battles of Trenton,
Princeton and Monmouth, NJ. A paper by Larry Kidder about the First Hunterdon can be viewed online at

Business Meeting, Part 1: The minutes of our 2011 Mershon Annual Meeting were approved.
Treasurer Report: Treasurer Joan Swearer of Rahway, NJ, reported on our Mershon Association finances. We
had $2,907.77 in our checking account and $8,579.00 in a certificate of deposit, a total of $11,486.77 We
had outstanding expenses of approximately $4,500 for preserving our Mershon archives, $200 for program
presenters, $200 for renting our meeting hall and approximately $1,000 for printing and mailing two edition
of our Mershon News Bulletin.
Genealogy Report: Our Mershon Association Genealogist, Teresa Mershon of Obetz, OH, has been responding
to numerous inquiries. We have over 34,000 relatives in our genealogy database going back to 1685. Teresa
follows up on all requests she receives for information. Teresa mails or emails inquirers a file to be completed
for their family line so we can update our database. The inquirer then gets a copy of our updated database
for their family line.

Afternoon Program: Lawrence Township Historian Dennis Waters presented: “Get Your Kicks on Route
206.” Dennis described the 400 year history of this highway that passes through Lawrenceville. Originally
an Indian trail, it became the Kings Highway in the early 1700s. It was the route used by early European
settlers in the area (Henry Mershon II settled his family on this road). This highway was traversed by both
the American and British armies during the Revolutionary War. It became the Lincoln Highway in the early
1920s, the first paved highway crossing the United States. The opening of US 1 between Trenton and New
Brunswick in the 1930s diverted much of the traffic from this road, but Route 206 remains an important
regional highway today.

Where to hold our next Mershon Annual Meeting: We voted to meet again in Lawrenceville. The date will be
Saturday, July 27, 2013.
New Business: There was no new business presented.
Show & Tell: Beverly Smith displayed her beautiful paintings.
We adjourned to visit Weedie Stokes’ house on Lawrenceville Road. Weedie displayed her typical hospitality
with light refreshments for all.
Our final event was a group dinner at Romano’s Macaroni Grill in the Marketfair Shopping Center on US 1.

Lawrence Township Archives Receive Mershon Archives
We needed to move quickly when the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville notified us on April 30, 2012 that
the church needed the room occupied by our Mershon archives. Our wish list: a safe home for our archives
that would keep our archives together, be accessible to Mershon descendants for research (preferably in the
Lawrenceville area) and a place that would give our Association the first right of refusal if they wanted to
dispose of some of our materials.
On August 1, 2012, three days before our 2012 Mershon annual meeting, Association President Clare
Mershon, Sharon Mershon and former Executive Committee member Diana Ricigliano-Crannage met Dennis
Waters, Lawrence Township Historian and Laura Nawrocik of the Lawrence Historical Society, to discuss
incorporating the Mershon archives into the Lawrence Township Archives at the Lawrence Headquarters
Branch of the Mercer County Library. The Township archives function as the archives of the Lawrence
Historical Society. Dennis and Laura were excited about the possibility of receiving the wealth of material in
the Mershon archives. The five individuals reached a tentative agreement to incorporate the Mershon
archives into the Township archives.
On August 3, anticipating formal approval by the Executive Board later that day, Executive Committee
members Dr. Jim Mershon, Clare Mershon and Harrison & Linda Hunt were joined by Sharon Mershon,
Bill O’Neal, his son, Bill Jr., and Diana Ricigliano-Crannage to begin packing our Mershon archives. Packing
and labeling of boxes continued through August 7 with the assistance of Alison Linton and Tom & Elaine
Tredinnick.
Transferring our Mershon archives to the Township archives was formally approved at our August 3 Executive
Committee meeting. Our archives were moved by the Lawrence Historical Society to the Township archives in
late August. Bill O’Neal, acting as an agent of our Mershon Association, transferred the contents of our two
safe deposit boxes at the Lawrenceville Sun Bank Branch to the Township archives in late September 2012.
Our Association has written a letter to the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville, thanking the church for its
good stewardship of our archives for many years, likely since the 1930’s.
The Township archives are in a locked room at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch of the Mercer County
Library. The Township archives are available to interested researchers by appointment. Laura Nawrocik of
the Lawrence Historical Society is also a Mercer Library staff member and is responsible for the Township
archives at the library. You may email Laura at [email protected] to make an appointment.
We look forward to having Laura speak at our 2013 Mershon annual meeting.

Mershon Family News
Zach Hudson of Troutdale, OR, has won the 2012 Part-time Faculty Award for Excellence
in Teaching at Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) in Gresham, OR. This award
recognizes outstanding contributions to teaching and learning along with community
engagement and resource development. Zach is a developmental reading and writing
instructor at MHCC.
Zach is the son of Jere and Roberta10 (Mershon) Hudson of Gresham. He is an Andrew3
Mershon descendant.
In addition to teaching, Zach is an accomplished musician, a square dance caller and
author. Zach recently wrote a children’s book, The Banjo, illustrated by his father, Jere, a retired art teacher.
The book includes a music CD with nine songs and tunes by musicians from Appalachia and the Pacific

Dr. Carol10 Mershon, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Politics at the
University of Virginia, Charlottesville, has completed her fourth academic book, coauthored with Olga Shvetsova of Binghamton University: Party System Change in
Legislatures Worldwide: Moving Outside the Electoral Arena, Cambridge University Press.

Michael and Gayle Murphy of Simsbury, CT, announce the birth of their
son Jude Lawrence Murphy on January 27, 2013. Michael and Gayle wrote
“…Jude is the best thing that has ever happened to us, and we couldn’t be
happier to have him in our lives.” Jude may be our youngest Andrew3 Mershon
descendant. Congratulations to Michael and Gayle!
Peace Corps Volunteer Susan Lynne11 Mershon is in her second year living and working in a Ngabe Indian
community near San Felix, Panama. Her assignment is to help her community plan and implement clean
water and sanitation projects. Susan’s community has no electricity, no running water and few latrines
before now. After a series of community meetings, her community leaders decided that building many more
latrines was their highest priority to improve community health. Since January, community members have

In Memoriam
Marie Louise “Weedie” (Reeder) Stokes, 98, of Lawrenceville, NJ, died
peacefully at home on April 2, 2013. She would have been 99 on April 29th.
Weedie was a descendant of Andrew3 Mershon through John and Hannah4
(Mershon) Reeder. She was very active in the Lawrenceville/Princeton
community and in our Mershon Association. Weedie presented a program on
Abner Reeder, Trenton Silversmith, at our 2010 annual meeting and suggested
two of our other recent annual meeting programs. For our April 2012 Mershon
News Bulletin, Weedie rewrote a draft article about her grandfather, Civil War
veteran Gen. Frank Reeder, and another article about herself. Visit

daughters, Carol Stokes of Lawrenceville, Elizabeth (Jill) Halbert of Great Falls,

Martha Jane (Simes) Mershon, 83, of Punta Gorda, FL, passed away on Jan. 30, 2013. She was the widow
of John Benjamin10 Mershon (1929-2003), an Andrew3 Mershon descendant. Martha is survived by two
daughters, Sandra Benkner of Punta Gorda and Debbie Stephenson of Port Charlotte, FL; two grandchildren

Daniel Lee10 Mershon, 60, of Homer, Alaska, died unexpectedly on Nov. 6, 2012 after suffering a stroke while
vacationing in Hawaii. Dan was a commercial fisherman in the Gulf of Alaska. He is survived by his wife
Christy; two sons, Joshua of Homer and Nathan of White Salmon, WA; and three grandchildren. Dan was an

Elizabeth Helen (Maggari) Mershon, 82, of Princeton Junction, NJ, died on Aug. 26, 2012. She was the
widow of Randolph Early9 “Bud” Mershon (1931-2001), a Thomas3 Mershon descendant. Together with her
late husband, they founded R. & E. Mershon Concrete Products, now known as Mershon Concrete in
Bordentown, NJ. The firm remains in family ownership and management. She is survived by a son,
Randolph Jr. of Columbus, NJ; daughters Elizabeth Greber of Princeton Junction and Cynthia Molesworth of

Betty Butler Selected to Receive Buroff Service Award
Betty Sandra (Cain) Butler of Kansas City, MO, has been selected by our Mershon Executive Committee to
receive the first Nicholas and Clara (Mershon) Buroff Commemorative Service Award. This award will be
presented to Betty on May 18 at the Mershon Southern Chapter Reunion in Pigeon Forge, TN. The presenter
will be Joan (Buroff) Swearer, daughter of Nick and Clara Buroff.
This award commemorates the outstanding service of Nick and Clara Buroff to our Mershon Association, who
for many years were the backbone of our Association, variously serving as President, Treasurer and
Genealogist. Betty Butler has served a similar role in the Mershon Southern Chapter, serving as for many
years as Treasurer, Corresponding Secretary and meeting planner. Betty and her husband Jim hosted the
2009 Southern Chapter Reunion in Independence, MO.
We intend to publish a photograph of Betty receiving the Buroff Service Award in our June 2013 Mershon
News Bulletin.

News from Mershon Association Genealogist Teresa Mershon
The genealogy section of our Association has been busy since the beginning of the year. Since January 1st we
have added over 200 Mershon relatives to the database. Let’s keep that information coming. Don’t forget to
report births, deaths and marriages. I am getting information on people who are registering on the
Association website weekly.
My husband Tim, grandson and I are looking forward to attending the Mershon Reunion in July. During the
weekend I am planning a short tutorial on how to use Ancestry.com to find deceased persons in our Mershon
genealogy database. If you are unable to attend the reunion, I will gladly email you a copy of the notes upon
request.
Another big step for our Association is that our Mershon genealogy books by Grace Lucile Olmstead Mershon
are in the process of being placed online where they can be viewed by anyone doing research. You can still
purchase hard copies as long as they last. There will be copies of all the books on sale at our 2013 Mershon
annual meeting and reunion.

Help Needed!
1. We need a new webmaster for our Mershon Association website - www.mershonassoc.com. Dr. Jim
Mershon of Wichita, KS, wants to retire as our webmaster. With the help of his computer consultant, Andrew
Wray, Dr. Jim has managed our website from its 2004 beginning. Our website is based on the DotNetNuke
(DNN) framework and is hosted by Godaddy.com.
Our website has many “hits” from interested persons and we receive three to five new website registrations
per month from persons desiring to record their Mershon ancestry and receive our Mershon News Bulletin.
Our website and Bill Trott’s website, www.henrymershon.com, have enabled many Mershon descendants to
easily contact our Association.

2. We need a new person to maintain our Mershon mail and email list. Our list is maintained on an
Excel spreadsheet. We currently have 1,008 names and addresses on our list. If you can help us with this

Newsletter Has New Editor
Board member Harrison Hunt has assumed the duties of Editor of the newsletter, to make Clare Mershon’s
job as President a little easier. Harrison, a descendant of Andrew through Lt. Henry, became familiar with
desktop publishing when he and his wife, Board member Linda, produced the monthly newsletter for their
former church on Long Island. A retired museum supervisor, he has written four books and numerous
articles on subjects ranging from the Civil War and museum practices to Sherlock Holmes.

Simmons in 2006. We have a good selection in small, medium, large, XL
