MESSAGE FROM THE OSA CHAIR
Dear Alumni
A belated welcome to 2015 to all of you, I trust your break over the Festive
Season was a good one and the year has started well for you. As always, the
beginning of the year is a busy one for the OSA as we head into a new year.
Shaun Edmeston
1998
This year has started with our Crusaders Rugby side traveling to the Cape Town 10’s. With a full
complement of players, they represented the OSA with distinction both on and off the field and although
the results did not match the enthusiasm, a great time was had by all. Special thanks to Spur, Higher
Ground and Mickey Walker from McCullagh & Bothwell for the very generous sponsorships and
to Kevin Parker and Christian Ashcroft for the hard work in piecing the tour together.
After a long time and serious debates, we have reached a point with the School where work has been
done to realign the Admissions Policy to the School, as well as the weightings given to Alumni in the
process. A detailed mail will be sent in the next few weeks on how the new Policy works and what is
required. I believe that this is by far the most transparent and rewarding Policy which has strong
weightings to all Alumni. However, the highest weighting of all in the new Policy is that of Date of
Admission related to Date of Birth. This means the earlier your child’s name goes on the list, the
better the chances of them getting accepted into the School. The best advice I can give is, don’t wait.
Coming up in the next couple of months is of course the Easter Sports Festival which promises to be
another great occasion over the Easter weekend. We have a sparkling array of schools and sports
which will take place over the weekend with entertainment for the whole family. I do hope to see you
there.
There are two additions to the OSA, the first is that of the OSA Wind shield Disc to Life members, which
gives you access to the property without having to complete the entry process. These can be collected
at the Higher Ground, from the Crusaders office between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. Secondly,
the OSA app has been launched in the latter parts of 2014 and is starting to gain traction. On this app
you will find communications, events, schedules and of course your Membership Card which entitles
you to discounts at the bar at Higher Ground, with more value to come through the year. A mail will be
sent to you, reminding you of your user details which you will need to download the app.
With that, I look forward to seeing you at Higher Ground soon.

Pixie Lowe (1979) Movie
St Stithians Boys’ College Movie Makers Club produced a movie of the Pixie Lowe (1979) story and the
screening took place on Tuesday 17 February 2015. Please let Cally Fields know if you would like a
copy of the DVD at [email protected].
“Please convey my congratulations to the producer, his
technical staff and the actors for a production that
incorporates the true spirit of Pixie, his friends and the
school. By consensus of the friends of 79, the portrayal
of his demise was true to life. We were moved to tears
as we relived that tragic day. A special word of
appreciation to the Movie Makers and Dramatic Arts
personnel. Thank you for making me proud to have
been a Saints boy and for celebrating the life of our
Saint's brother, one who deserved to live way beyond his
18 short years. Regards Richard Kushlick (1979)”

Old Stithian App !
It gives the OSA Committee great pleasure to announce the launch of the Old Stithian App for mobile.
Mobi Site : http://osa.telecode.de/mobi
Android : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=za.co.digitalpeppa.eventpeppa.osa
Introduction : The Old Stithian App forms an integral part of our Membership strategy and communications
roadmap going forward. Your new App is positioned as a more consistent, more accessible and less intrusive
communication tool, aiding involvement and correspondence within our membership base. This launch is also a
major first for an African Old Girls / Old Boys organisation and sees us form part of a select-few similar Associations
globally.
The OSA mobile application has been developed to keep Alumni in touch with what is happening at the
Association as well as the school at all times. By making use of Digital Peppa's Event Peppa solution, the app allows
Alumni to view event details, access sporting and cultural fixtures, see our latest news, contact any of the leaders with
click-to-contact facilities, receive real-time messages and view our image and video galleries. We have also
integrated the OSA Membership card into the application that will allow you to replace your traditional membership
card as well as access restricted areas in the application. Future versions of the app will allow members to make
mobile payments, access advertising opportunities, showcase their products/services and much more!
About the App : We have taken a phased approached to the release of features and functionality. In the current
Beta version, you will find nine sections; Events, Newsletters, Fixtures, Chapters & Teams module, Members Listing,
Leadership module, a Media section for video and images, Notices, and last but definitely not least, your new
Membership Card. Please take the time to download and access the App. Among some of the immediate benefits,
displaying your Membership Card at the One & All, Higher Ground, and selected OSA functions will entitle you to
discounts on and rewards; including 10% off drinks on Tuesdays before the dinner service.
Get the App : At launch, there are two versions of the App available;
for Android, and the Mobi-Site for feature phones :
Android : As of 23 September 2014 the Android version is available
from Google Play. Search for "Old Stithian" in Google Play.
Mobi Site : Visit http://osa.telecode.de/mobi, Click the Redirect Tab,
Save the page to Bookmarks /Favourites
iOS / Blackberry and Windows Phone : Versions for iOS, Blackberry
and Windows Phone will follow over the next thirty days. In the
interim we recommend users of these platforms make use of the
Mobi-Site.
We look forward to your involvement.
Sincerely
Russell Harvey

Past Girls’ College Dux Scholars
Please make contact with the Girls’ College

[email protected]
St Stithians Boys’ College Dux Scholars— 1956-2013
Pete Backwell, a former Boys’ College parent, as well as a former member of the BC
PTA and St Stithians’ Council, has proposed a “Dux Scholar Project”. He would like
to compile a book recording each of our Dux Scholars, showing what you have done
with your lives since leaving the Boys’ College. Hopefully this will include some
pictures and some stories you would like to share. Obviously some of you have been out
of school for longer than others, and thus may have more to tell! Both Pete’s sons, Alex
(2008) and David (2012), are past Dux Scholars.
The idea would be to update the book regularly, and to present a copy to the Dux
Scholar, and the “12 Club”, annually. It will highlight the academic side of school life,
as well as what can be achieved
after school. Please contact Pete on
[email protected] in order for him to send you a proforma of questions, which will
help us in formatting the proposed book.
If you have any reservations, or queries, please feel free to contact me personally.
