Celebrates 25 Years of Manufacturing
Small Industrial Gasoline Engines in Maryville
The Kawasaki 25th Anniversary celebration began on August 21, 2014, with an Employee
Appreciation Day. All employees were invited to a catered lunch served by Jack Stack Barbecue
in a large air conditioned tent in the south parking lot. All employees received a generous gift
of an iPad mini. A 25th anniversary t-shirt was provided to all employees by KMC - Grand
Rapids as a “Thank you” for all the hard work and dedication employees have given in the
past and to congratulate them on this milestone event.
25th Anniversary - August 2014
On August 22, 2014, KMM hosted special guests from KHI, KMC, original engine manufacturers, suppliers and members of the
Maryville community. There was a presentation of speakers followed by a plant tour and lunch.
On August 23rd, KMM had an Open House for the public. We were pleased with the turnout of about 1300 people who took
the time to come to see what happens at KMM-Maryville Plant. We would like to take the opportunity to thank all those employees
who volunteered and/or helped with the preparation, the set up and conducting these events. Without your help this would not
have been possible nor would it have run so smoothly.

Continuous Learning & Development
Powers Potential in Critical Roles at KMM
Kawasaki’s engineers and technicians are smart people! They know enough to take advantage of resources such as ToolingU for
continuous development.
Sixty-two percent of KMM’s technicians have been utilizing ToolingU for brushing up, solving problems, and expanding their
understanding of their job tasks.
Forty-five percent of KMM’s engineers have been active with ToolingU (compared to 35% of all pre-registered employees being
active so far). One engineer reports, “I learned more about manufacturing and materials through ToolingU than I did in school.”
Whether their managers assigned classes to them as new hires, or they self-selected courses to confirm or broaden their knowledge, engineers and technicians from PE, QA, R&D, QC, Die Casting, Maintenance, and IS as a group have averaged a 23% gain
from pre-tests to finals while completing over 800 TU classes (averaging over 20 courses each).
They are motivated to engage regularly with ToolingU for a variety of reasons:
•To be more efficient at their job.
•Continuous improvement and learning to gain knowledge.
•Understanding different jobs at KMM to gain a basic understanding of the tasks that others perform.
•Expanding knowledge and skills for potential advancement at Kawasaki.
•Incentives like safety points and free lunches.
Rick Law, an engineering technician in Production Engineering, reports that Tooling has refreshed and improved his knowledge
in a professional way. “I would like to continue to take TU classes, because they are informative and helpful with your everyday job,
and only take a few minutes of your time.”
Another technician agrees that TU is great for personal development, “The information is free and beneficial to all. If you have
free resources at your fingertips, why not use them to be a better employee?”
“I got a great refresher on GD&T and it’s always good to go back and reference these courses,” says James Meyer, R&D Technician II. Doren Wells, Technician II in QC, also appreciates going back over classes for reference and to retain information. These
two employees are studying the custom course bundle created for SME’s Certified Manufacturing Technologist certification. The
62 CMFgT courses are mapped to the body of knowledge for preparing for SME’s Technologist and Engineer certifications. Doren’s
personal goal is to complete all classes that pertain to his job as well as others he has interest in.
Engineers and technicians fill critical roles at Kawasaki. One engineer who has logged on every month but one in the last year
has a personal goal too: “I hope to take classes that could help me move up in my career and better myself.”
If you are interested in exploring job functions of technicians or engineers, investigate the following introductory ToolingU courses:
•Applied and Engineering Sciences 110
•Manufacturing Process Application: Part I 124
•Manufacturing Process Application: Part II 125
•Product Design and Development 134

Safety Tips:
Distracted Driving Key Facts
•Drivers spend more than half their time focused on things
other than driving.
•Distraction contributes to more than 5,000 traffic fatalities
each year.
•Texting and phone calls aren’t the only distractions. Passengers,
eating, and in-car technologies can also cause distractions.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Foxx Visits KMM
Although, Kawasaki has over one-hundred years of experience
for rolling stock manufacturing and has delivered over 5,000 commuter and subway cars in the United States, including over 1,700
from the Lincoln Plant, we are receiving additional exposure and
recognition now that we have a contract to deliver cars in the
Washington, D.C. market providing high visibility for the Kawasaki
brand image in our nation’s capital. This exposure in Washington,
D.C. set the stage for Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx to
visit KMM on Tuesday, September 23, to highlight our operations
and promote the need to continue investment in mass transportation and infrastructure as the U.S. population continues to grow.
Even though there is no direct investment in Nebraska for rail
mass transportation systems, the topic of investment is of great
interest for Kawasaki and the KMM Lincoln Plant as the current
production WMATA 7K cars for the Washington Metro Area
Transportation Authority (WMATA) is underway in our facility.
Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx
We greeted Secretary Foxx and his staff in the front lobby of
the Rail Car Plant. Mr. Hiroshi Takata, KHI Senior Executive Vice President, welcomed him on behalf of the entire Kawasaki Group
with a short speech. We then provided Secretary Foxx with a general overview and history of the KMM Lincoln Plant and an operational explanation of the rail car production process before going on a tour of the production floor.
The shop tour provided Secretary Foxx with the opportunity to see our workforce in action producing the WMATA 7K cars
beginning with the fabrication process through final assembly and concluding with the function test building. Secretary Foxx was
impressed with the quality and workmanship of the cars, but most of all, he was impressed with the knowledge and capability of
the production work force and supporting teams contributing to the car production process. His positive impression is a reflection
of Kawasaki and the entire KMM Lincoln team.
The visit concluded with a speech by Secretary Foxx and Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler to all Rail Car Division employees recognizing
Kawasaki capabilities and accomplishments and emphasizing that investment in mass transportation means jobs in Lincoln, Nebraska
and at our many suppliers. Secretary Foxx clearly stated his belief in the importance of continued federal funding for infrastructure
and mass transportation projects and we are hopeful that his commitment will result in the availability of federal funding for our
customer to exercise option contracts for an additional 220 WMATA 7K cars in 2015, which would increase our build quantity for
this project from 528 to a total of 748 cars.
The WMATA Silver Line had its opening ceremony on Saturday,
July 26. US Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx, the Governor of Virginia, the Mayor of DC, and many other representatives were there to help celebrate this 19-year-old project. Pictured
are Mr. Hiroji Iwasaki, KRC CEO (left) and Mr. Shozo Ito, KRC
Marketing Manager (right).

ATV2 Assembly Line
After many meetings regarding the June 2014 startup of the new MULE AF820 (PRO FXT), it was decided that there was a need
for a new assembly line on ATV2. In May of 2013, Maintenance began tearing down the old overhead slat conveyor, dyno booth
and crating conveyor. Construction of the new line began in September of 2013. The new ATV2 assembly line was designed to eliminate the hoisting of an assembled unit. The line features automated removal of the unit from the assembly cart, an open air dyno,
a scissor lift for crating and an automated transfer cart for crated units. The flush floor conveyor moves ergonomic assembly carts
the full length of the line and uses three AGV’s (Automatic Guided Vehicles) for cart return. The line’s poke yoke systems consists
of torque wrenches, DC tools, anti-freeze fill and brake charging. The line also uses modular parts racks and battery operated tools.
With safety always being a top priority at KMM, the last two assembly lines built here have flush floor conveyors that eliminate
the trip hazard for operators. These conveyors also allow for the changing of pitch to different lengths (divisible by eight) in order to
accommodate future models and flexible day rates.
The ergonomic assembly carts are programmed to raise and lower for the best
possible operator working position. At the
end of the line the cart lowers the unit onto
its wheels so it can be driven onto the dyno.
After the unit is lowered, the assembly cart
makes a 90° turn, meets the AGV, and automatically releases from the conveyor by
raising the conveyor tow pins. The AGV then
drops the side tow pins into the cart and
moves it to the beginning of the line where
it stages and waits to take the assembly cart
to the automatic docking location. The carts
tow pins are dropped into the conveyor at
the set pitch.
The dyno has a simpler design and is the
first open-air, flush floor dyno at the Lincoln
Plant. The unit is tested running in low, high, and reverse. Two and four wheel drive is checked as well as the locking differential and
brakes. Each test must meet specific requirements before moving to the next. The unit is driven from the dyno for final inspection,
after inspection, driven onto the crate base. The crate base is on a scissor lift and is programmed to raise and lower to provide for
the operators proper ergonomics.
ATV2 uses electronic shutoff, cordless tools in place of pneumatic tools. These tools are more operator friendly by eliminating torque
reaction. They are also quieter and provide an energy savings over pneumatic tools. KMM’s Kaizen engineer designed new modular
racks with adjustable shelving. These racks can be configured into three different lengths. A four lug DC tool is used to tighten all four
lugs at the same time and a tire manipulator will soon be installed to eliminate the need for the operator to lift wheels for installation.
A tremendous thanks goes to Engineering, Maintenance, the Kaizen Group and Production Staff for working to make ATV2 a
safe, ergonomic and efficient assembly line.
