Memories
the Lord. One of the most important
things we can mentor for others is the
joy of studying the Bible.
M
When we recall the Bible story of
Martha and Mary, the message is
that while doing earthly things is important, being in and with the Words
of Christ Jesus is the most important
thing anyone can do. (Luke 10:41) As
members of LWML we are both ‘Mary
minded’ – interested and focused on
The Word, and ‘Martha minded’ –
doing earthly things, especially doing
things that extend the love of God to
other people. We need to be careful
not to fall into the
trap of thinking that
an LWML meeting
is only a social
gathering. When
the focus of our
meetings is having an ‘interesting speaker’ or
discussing the report of every
committee in our society … or something similar, we are not focusing on
Bible Study. We need to be in the
Word in order to be of the Word so we
can walk with the Lord.
any of us
are still reflecting on the
awesomeness
of
attending
the
LWML convention
in Portland, Oregon. Each person attending an event like this always
leaves with some very special memories. The memories will vary from one
person to another, but one thing will
be the same for all; the sheer excitement of being with so many
people of the same faith
at the same time. People from not just the
United States but
all over the world
with very different personalities, shapes, sizes, ages,
abilities and yet all having the same
faith, and belonging to the same
church body–LCMS.
It is so awesome to be with thousands
of people who enjoy studying the Bible. Thousands of people enjoying Bible Study? Yes, that is what LWML
will do for you – help you find a way
to study the Bible and enjoy it. Often
I have heard members of LWML refer
to the time, event, or person that got
them interested in Bible Study. Have
you ever noticed that when you are
with someone who is enthused about
something it is easy to ‘catch’ that
enthusiasm? We are Lutheran
Women in Mission who are in the
Word, of the Word and walking with
So when we have an LWML meeting
or activity, let us try to also be in the
Word. If your group is busy making
quilts or scrap booking, ask someone
to read from the Bible as you work on
your projects. Combine a ‘Martha’
activity with a ‘Mary’ focus … being
in the Word. Changing the focus to
Bible Study will add a special meaning to the gathering and make the
activity an awesome special memory.

Pastor Selle Serves in
Kazakhstan
Two of Our Own “Hit it Big”!!
Congratulations to two members of the North Wisconsin LWML who have been selected to serve God and His
church through positions at the national level.
Please note, there is no article
this quarter from our district
Senior Pastoral Counselor,
Rev. Bob Selle. At the time of
publication, he was serving as
a missionary to Kazakhstan.
Deaconess Betty Knapp of Marquette, Mich. is now the
Chairman of the Mustard Seed Committee and Anne
Hartmann of Eau Claire, Wis. has agreed to serve as
chairman of the newly formed Young Woman Representative Task Force.
God be with you both as you use the gift and talents He
has given you to serve His people through the LWML.
Also, prior to his departure, he was ill with
lyme disease. Please keep Pastor Selle in your
prayers. May his work and ministry in Christ’s
name bring a fruitful harvest for the Kingdom!
A Mission Challenge for Us All
As “Lutheran Women in Mission” we are about the task of “bringing the lost and erring into eternal fellowship” with God. How do you do that? What sorts of things does your society do to work toward that goal? Let
us know. Send a picture of your group bringing their mites to God. Show us what your quilting group looks
like while it’s hard at work. Inspire us to try a new activity in our group by telling us about one that worked
in yours. As Mission Tidings editor, I’d like to see each society share the work you are doing. You are welcome
to send articles in at ANYTIME, but please plan to do so on the following schedule:
Zones 1-5
January 2010 Issue
Deadline: Dec. 1, 2009
Zones 6-10
April 2010 Issue
Deadline: Mar. 1, 2010
Zones 11-15
July 2010 Issue
Deadline: Jun. 1, 2010
Zones 16-19
October 2010 Issue
Deadline: Sept. 1, 2010
Mailing Changes
Beginning with the January 2010 issue, the method of
mailing the Mission Tidings will be different.
Due to increases in the cost of printing and postage, the NWD LWML Executive
Committee voted at the May 2009 meeting to mail only one print copy of each issue
to each mailing address on file. If more copies are needed, the print copy may be photocopied locally and the copies distributed.
Both a color copy (for viewing and/or printing in color) and a black and white copy
(for printing in black and white) will be available on-line at www.nwdlwml.org. By
agreeing to print your original off the web site, you can save the district even more
money. Thank you for your understanding and for making this adjustment. It means
more money will go to pay our Mission Grants. That’s what we’re all about after all!!

61st FALL LWML RETREAT
September 10-12, 2009
CAMP LUTHER
(continued from previous page)
The weather was unbelievable! Everyday was sunny and warm even though it was supposed to
shower off and on all three days.
I was glad God had planned this retreat. Yes, we did have a Retreat Committee, but God did the
work. He used our servanthood - sometimes pushing us to get things done. It was going to be a
working, learning experience with some rest and relaxation. I looked up the word “retreat” and
it says: A place of privacy or safety: refuge. Which God, and Camp Luther are. Then it said: A
period of group withdrawal for prayer, meditation, study, and instruction under a director. We
had the best director of all, God.
He instructed us through His word in our Bible Study, “With Gladness We Serve the Lord.” He
used Gary “Woody” Vought to set everything up for this Bible Study and he did a great
job. “THANKS WOODY!!”
Then God gave us Melissa “Jet” Seehafer to be our host for all three days. What a model of a
servant host she was. There wasn't anything she wouldn't do for us. She also lead evening devotions, opening with song, God's Word and personal stories. Then she got the campfire/songfest
going. Others played games or just sat and visited.
“THANKS JET!!”
There's a lot of servanthood at Camp Luther. The whole staff took really good care of us.
"EXCELENT FOOD". God provided time for us as LWML Christian women to pray, meditate,
study and be instructed together and then He gave us free time to have a hand massage, take
trail walks, play games, do work projects, participate in a scavenger hunt and take boat rides.
The Ladies did a great job at filling up the grazing table that is back. A big hug and thank you
to all who volunteered their time and help to prepare for this year's retreat, and also to all who
attended. God bless you and hope you all and more plan on coming next year - SEPTEMBER 911, 2010.
And remember, when asked to serve don't just say no right away. Take time to think. Pray first
and ask God what He wants you to do? He gives us what we need when He asks us to serve.
“HAVE FAITH AND TRUST.”
Sincerely,
Sandy Christl and your
Retreat Committee

Young Women Representative Meets
Featured Missionary
Cynthia Khan was born in Pakistan and because of the influence
of Christian missionaries in the lives of her grandparents, has
been a life-long Christian. Today she serves on the LWML Gospel Outreach Committee and works with her husband as a missionary for People of the Book Lutheran Outreach (POBLO) in
Dearborn, Michigan.
POBLO is a mission outreach specifically to Muslim people.
Having grown up in a predominantly Muslim culture, Cynthia is
uniquely gifted to bring the love of Jesus to this population of
American’s. You can read more about Cynthia and her ministry
in the Spring 2009 Lutheran Women’s Quarterly.
While at the National LWML Convention in Portland, Oregon
earlier this summer, our Young Women Representative, Michelle
Mahrley, had the opportunity to meet Cynthia. She graciously
agreed to pose for a picture along with a copy of the magazine
which features her story and ministry.
