“Teaching and learning, with
heart.” This motto has been at the
centre of my teaching philosophy for
the last thirty-three years. Why? I
believe teaching and learning is
energizing and supremely important
work. I believe that when we teach
and learn with our ‘heart’ we bring
passion and purpose to our work and
we also bring empathy and deep
caring for our students and their
families. For me, when educators
feel enthusiastic about our work,
our school communities are
dynamic, innovative, and responsive
to everyone’s needs. I’m very
grateful to have had the opportunity
to share my purpose and passion for
teaching and learning with the
South Delta Secondary School
community. The past five years have
been very fulfilling for me,
professionally and personally.

It is my hope that under my
stewardship SDSS has moved forward
in its goal of providing 21st century
learning opportunities for our
students. Our teaching faculty is
constantly involved in collaboration,
professional development, finetuning their teaching strategies
toolkit and using a variety of current
technology to enhance student
learning. The school physical plant
has been rejuvenated: we have a
state-of-the-art Science Superlab;
the Library Learning Commons has
arisen like a phoenix from the old
paradigm of silence and ‘shshshs’
to a centre of discussion and
research; classrooms are bright,
warm!, and welcoming; the Front
Office looks professional, polished
and undeniably more space
efficient. The whole building is
seismically solid, will be freshly
painted all over and will have a
terrific new theatre plaza (thanks
to Tsawwassen Rotary!) by the end
of the summer. I think this fortyyear old physical plant looks
mighty fine and everyone can be
very proud of this fact!
As I retire from my position of
Principal at the end of this school
year, I leave with heartfelt warm
regards for all SDSS faculty, staff,
students, and families. In the
words of the late Katharine
Graham, former publisher of the
Washington Post, “To love what
you do, and feel that it mattershow could anything be more fun?”
I loved what I did, I do know that it
mattered, and I really enjoyed it
all!
Looking forward to the next
chapters,
Helene Gaudreault

Principal’s Message
The last newsletter of the school year- how fast the year has
gone by, or at least, it feels that way now. I must express
my heartfelt thanks to all of our learning community:
the entire faculty for contributing to our SD school
culture of promoting student development in all
domains, socially, emotionally, physically, and
academically;
our support staff who is indispensable to our
classrooms and the efficient running of our physical
plant;
our parent and volunteer community who are involved
in their children’s lives, contributing their expertise
and support to bringing up our next generation.
We are all involved in doing the most important job of allthat of loving our children, modeling positive attitudes and
behaviours, and giving of ourselves to inspire our children to
become capable young people.
Our Student Recognition events were adjusted this month
given the political climate which complicated the logistics
of the events.

Our Athletic Banquet took place on Tuesday, June 3rd
as foreseen and it was a fun and delicious event for
all. The names of the recognized athletes and the Top
Athletes, male and female, Grade 8-11 were
announced. The top Grade 12 male and female
athletes will be recognized at Valedictory. (See the list
further on in this newsletter.)
Junior and senior students will receive subject
recognition awards from their teachers in their
classrooms.
The Awards of Excellence Evening has been moved to
Tuesday, June 17th during Block D from 10:30 to 11:30
am. This assembly will recognize junior and senior
students receiving the “outstanding category” awards
in scholastics and service. Families have been notified
already so that they can make arrangements to
attend.
The Honours Event Dance was to have been held on
the evening of Thursday, June 5th. This event was to
recognize the hard work of students who have attained
Principal’s List/Honour Roll/ ‘G’ Club criteria for both
Term 1 and Term 2 reports cards and those students
with over 30 hours of school service, and recipients of
subject/fine arts awards. However, due to a number
of reasons, there wasn’t very good student response to
the invite so we have moved the event to September
or October and all eligible Honours Event students will
be able to go for free.
We will publish the list of all award winners in our August
Newsletter. Principal’s List, Honour Roll, and Service
Awards certificates will be available for pick up during the
last week of classes June 16-20th during lunch hour.
Congratulations to all recipients! We honour your efforts
and your achievements.
I hope everyone has visited the Parent and Student Connect
bulletin board and our school website to view the altered
schedule for the week of June 11-17th.
Regarding the following information that is provided
below, all is correct as of Friday, June 6th. Please look to
Parent/Student Connect Bulletin Boards daily to check for
any updates.
From Wednesday, June 11th to Monday, June 16th, our days
will be re-structured with two longer classes per day
beginning with a 15-minute Homeroom class. Each class will
be 2 hours and 15 minutes in length. These longer periods
are intended to accommodate final evaluation processes and
in-class exams in both core and elective courses. Student
attendance each day is mandatory.
The last day of classes, Tuesday, June 17th, we will run all
eight blocks of the timetable with each class 35 minutes in
length. A special assembly will take place in Block D.
Two dedicated test/project make-up sessions will be held on
the mornings of Wednesday, June 18th and Thursday, June
19th, from 8:30 am to 11:30 pm. These sessions are for
those students who have missed the tests/projects held
during the altered day schedules of June 11th to 17th due to
serious illness or other unforeseen circumstances. These
make-up opportunities are arranged between specific
students and their teachers and facilitated by counsellors.
Important tutorials and ‘incomplete’ work make-up classes
will take place on Thursday, June 19th and Friday, June20th
for all students in all grades who require additional time to
complete work needed to pass a particular course. Teachers
will post their tutorial times in order to be available to give
extra help to their students preparing for up-coming
provincial exams.
Math 10 Provincial exams will take place on June 18th, 19th,
and 20th in the school’s bookable computer labs invigilated
by SD faculty and staff. All other provincial exams held
from June 18th to 27th - (English 10, English 12,
Communications 12, Français Langue 12, Social Studies 11,
Sciences Humaines 11, and Science 10) - will take place at
their designated times in designated classrooms and will
require invigilation by SD faculty and staff. The Final Exam
Schedule will be posted around the school for students and
will also be posted on our school website. Vice Principal
Hunt has more information regarding Provincial Exams
further on in this newsletter.
Our Valedictory Evening on Friday, June 20th is an event that
we are looking forward to, grads, their families and faculty
alike.
Please read through this final newsletter of the year to learn
about our students’ most recent athletic and artistic
endeavours, their scholastic achievements, and their social
responsibility actions. We welcome the Tsawwassen
community to see our 2014 Grads in their gowns and suits on
the afternoon of June 27th as they do the annual walk down
53rd St. from 3 pm to 4 PM. We wish them well as they move
on with the rest of their life.

KWANTLEN POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM
Any grade 11 student, who would like to jump ahead and take a 1st year
university course this September at night school, should see Ms. Foster before
June 13th. In the past, students have taken courses in Drafting, Computer
Science, French, Psychology, Math, Criminology, English, Accounting and
Spanish.
KWANTLEN WILL ALSO BE HOLDING A REGISTRATION WORKSHOP ON TUESDAY,
JUNE 3rd IN THE CONFERENCE ROOM AT LUNCH. BRING YOUR LAPTOP.
GOING TO UNIVERSITY OR COLLEGE THIS SEPTEMBER? THINGS YOU NEED TO
DO!
1. Access your student home page on the institute’s website. Most of you
have done this, but if you haven’t, follow these instructions or see Ms.
Foster in the Career Centre:
2. Go online to your future institute's website.
3. Click on login.
4. Type in the student number the institute issued to you and your
birthdate as your password or PIN. You can change the PIN at a later
date.
5. Your student home page should have your name at the top.
6. Now change your password or PIN (birthdate) to something confidential.
Search around for all the info contained on your student home page.
7. To find out your registration time it is usually posted under "student
status".
8. Pay your registration fee or “save my place” fee. This cost varies
between institutions. It can be from $100 to $350 in cost. Pay this fee
at least a week before your registration time. Pay this fee on your
student home page. Usually you can use a credit card.
9. Check your registration day and time. Each institute has different
times. Go to a “Planning Session” or “How to Register Session” at your
chosen institute.
PLAN YOUR COURSES
Plan your courses! What courses do you need to meet faculty requirements? To meet major requirements? Remember,
in BC everyone takes 1st year English. If you are having difficulties see Ms. Foster in the Career Centre. Check the
institute’s timetable of courses on the internet and put 2 or 3 programs together. Courses fill up fast. Make sure you
have alternatives. Pay your tuition fees before the due date.
BC TRANSFER GUIDE
This guide helps students find course equivalencies between colleges and universities in BC. College transfer students
must first check the university program they want to transfer in to. This will help with which courses to take in
college. Then, students can refer to the BC Transfer Guide to find the college course equivalencies. Information about
the guide is www.bccat.bc.ca and the guide is accessed at http://bctransferguide.ca/
STUDENT LOANS
Students who need a student loan must apply online before the end of June. To access provincial loan application
forms, visit http://www.aved.gov.bc.ca/studentaidbc/welcome.htm An early application will ensure that students
receive their assessment notice before classes start. Submitting an application for a student loan does not mean the
student will receive a loan.

Why do we need to recycle organics?
Because more than one-third of all non-recycled waste disposed in the Metro Vancouver region is actually
compostable organics! That’s right – 35% of the garbage in our landfills could be composted instead of taking up
space in our limited waste disposal system.
By undertaking organics recycling in our schools we can help to divert 35% of waste away from landfills to instead
be composted into rich soil that can be used for valuable purposes such as local farming. Overall, Metro
Vancouver’s Zero Waste Challenge is a mandated goal of diverting 80% of waste from landfills by 2020 via
recycling, including organics recycling. In the Delta School District we have embraced this challenge because it
not only upholds our District Vision that includes a commitment to environmental sustainability, but we also
believe in proper stewardship of all of our resources.
As parents and students we need your help!
Starting on January 1, 2015, Metro Vancouver will be imposing a 50% surcharge on contaminated loads going to the
landfill – this includes organics waste. We need everyone’s help to ensure all waste in our schools is put into the
proper bin for disposal. No longer will it be acceptable to just throw everything into the waste bin. Anything that
can be recycled needs to be sorted and put into the correct bins.
The Delta School District strongly encourages litter less lunches. By packing lunches in re-usable containers and
not including items that have disposal packaging we can have a very positive impact on the environment. If an
item is not re-usable then it should at least be recyclable. Let’s make the lunchbox popular again! We want to see
this happening in our all schools throughout our District.
Litter less lunches, along with the new organics recycling means we can reach our Zero Waste Challenge goal!!!
We can only reach this goal with your help and we thank you in advance for your support.

South Delta Sun Devils Athletics Update
Submitted by Mr. Sweeney & Ms. Lingham, Athletic Directors
The month of May was an exceptionally successful month for athletics at SDSS with our
teams showing very well at various Fraser Valley Championships. Our grade 8 and
junior boys rugby teams both came third at their respective tier 1 Fraser Valley
Championships which bodes very well for the future of rugby at South Delta. The SDSS
track and field team qualified many athletes for the Fraser Valley finals and two
athletes from that meet, Mackenzie Connors grade 12 and Jack Fayle grade 9, qualified for the
Provincial Championships. Our senior SDSS golfers also qualified for Provincials with a third place
showing at their Fraser Valley tournament and the junior girls soccer team overcame two defeats to
Delta Secondary to beat them when it counted in the Delta Championship which qualified them for
Fraser Valleys. The highlight of May though was the senior girls soccer team who captured their fourth
Fraser Valley Championship in 11 years when they defeated Charles Best 1-0. The girls also qualified for
a record 13th consecutive girls soccer Provincials.
We have had a very successful year of athletics at SDSS with two provincial championships and three
Fraser Valley titles won as of publication. SDSS Athletics would like to thank all of our parents for
supporting their kids and their athletic pursuits this year at SDSS. We'd also like to thank all of those
who came out to support our teams and to all those in our community who supported athletics by
coaching teams this year at SDSS!

The PAC would like to acknowledge that Helene Gaudreault, our principal at SDSS will be retiring this year. We wish her all the
wonderful things that retirement has to offer but are sad to see her go. Helene, thank you for your support and interest in all of the
PAC endeavours as well as your commitment over the years to the highest quality education for our children.
The PAC are parents like you, interested and excited about contributing to a great high school experience for their children. We do
this through all manner of support to students, staff and parents. This year the SDSS PAC organized and led the following events:
LEAP - raising funds for equipment in the classrooms.
Parent to Parent: Mentor Parents shared stories and wisdom for parents of grade 8s.
Parent to Parent: Sharing stories and wisdom for parents of older teens.
Allocation of $28,000 for extracurricular activities
Teacher Appreciation lunches
Parenting and Social Media Workshop
Parenting your Teen with guest speaker Klaus Klein
Bi-weekly Parent Support Group for teens involved in substance use.
If you benefited from any of these events we ask that you consider joining the PAC in September as we are in need of more hands
on deck! No special experience required and you do not be involved in what we fondly call the 'Administrivia', you can participate in
only select events.
We are currently looking to fill positions on the PAC executive: Vice Chair, Emergency Preparedness, and Communications. The
PAC makes important decisions regarding the safety and well-being of our kids so please join us in upholding high standards.
The PAC would like to congratulate and thank Marni MacGillivray as our incoming PAC Chair! Marni has been a valuable member
of the PAC and will make an excellent chairperson!
We would also like to thank, from the bottom of hearts, the inclusive leadership, dedication and creativity of outgoing PAC
Chair, Daleth Bach! We wish you all the best on your future endeavours and are grateful that you remain with us to create and
oversee more educational and support opportunities for parents, students and staff!
