Say "TAPSNAP™"
A
Say goodbye to those cramped old photo booths...
and say hello to TapSnap™, the latest and greatest phototainment technology!
Instantly Social
TapSnap™ can instantly upload all your photos to your social
media in real time. With a push of a button, friends who can't
make the party can follow along with all the fun. Don't wait
until the party is over to get your photos up, let TapSnap™ do
all the work for you.
ccording to Wikapedia, the first photo booth appeared
in 1925 on Broadway in New York City. For 25 cents,
the booth took, developed and printed 8 photos,
a process taking about ten minutes. In the first six months,
the booth was used by 280,000 people. Photo booths are still
popular entertainment, even though they have changed very
little from their almost century old design. Some of them have
gone digital, or added miniature props on sticks, but you're
still stuck in that tiny booth waiting for your skinny strip of
photos to pop out.
So what is TapSnap™ all about? The only thing it really shares
in common with it's distant relative the photo booth... is that
it takes pictures. Which is like saying "The pony express and
e-mail both deliver correspondence." Forget the photo booth,
TapSnap™ is the wave of the future, and this is why:
Havre de Grace residents, Eric & Dawn Metz, both government
employees, were looking for a business they could call their
own. After doing their research, they discovered TapSnap™.
A brand new company out of Canada, TapSnap™ is on the
cutting edge of sophisticated, portable phototainment systems.
The best way to describe it is a giant ipad on a light portable
frame. Eric and Dawn could immediately see the potential,
and were one of the first few franchises in the world. There is
certainly nothing like it in our area, and Eric and Dawn service
a large territory, from Philadelphia to West Virginia. "We knew
getting involved in something so innovative would require us
to do a little education when it came to what TapSnap is all
about," said Eric.
Interactive Touch Screen Technology
Just like your ipad, TapSnap™ responds to the touch of your
finger. Scroll through the options on the 42 inch screen, or
write a personal note on your photograph.
Green Screen Technology
Are you getting married in February, but wish it were at
the beach. No problem with TapSnap™, you can instantly
transport your guests to an exotic location.
Large Color Pictures & Video in Seconds
TapSnap™ has replaced the skinny strip of photos with a glossy
4x6 keepsake, the size of a postcard. No waiting, just immediate
gratification for the digital age. And... yes, it takes videos!
No Tech-Support Needed
Every TapSnap™ machine comes with an attendant, so no
need to worry about anything going wrong. It would be awful
if you had to run out for toner during your reception.
Open Concept
Ever try to fit your whole wedding party into a photo booth?
The wide screen open format of TapSnap™ allows you to
capture the entire group with ease. That means no walls. No
ceilings. No limits on your creativity.
Physical & Digital Props
No more mini hats on a stick. TapSnap™ comes with full size
props for photo fun. Or get really creative and use the digital
props... you can even add celebrities to your photos.
If you are looking for the latest technology in photo fun...
Corporate Branding
TapSnap™ can be programmed to print your logo on every this is it. Call Eric & Dawn and have TapSnap™ at your next
photo, making them the perfect keepsake for meetings, event. For more information: 443-807-3112.

"The secret to my success is
surrounding myself with the
most talented people I could find.
I'm not an accountant, I'm not an
architect... I know what I do well.
I listen to their advice, and I let
J
ordan Thomas Salon owner, Terry McGill, always
knew she had a future in the beauty industry.
Her parents sent her to Mercy High School, but
Terry already had her sights set on a dream career. Her
junior and senior years, she spent her evenings at Marc
School of Beauty. When Terry turned eighteen, she
graduated from high school and received her Beauty
School diploma too.
From there, it was much like climbing a ladder. She
started at a salon in Parkville. She wasn't there long
when she was snapped up by Ron Thomas, who was
3 Terry McGill
well renowned in Baltimore. "In his new salon on Bel
Air Road, I was working a chair right between Ron
Thomas and his stepson Michael. I watched him very closely... how he interacted
with his clients. His technical skills were amazing, but so were his people skills. I
learned from him, and I wanted my own place," said Terry
them do what they do best"
Terry's next step came in the form of a partner she met while working at Ron
Thomas. "We started a small salon called Strands... 300 sq. ft., just enough for three
chairs. A few years later we moved up to Perry Hall, and added three more chairs,"
explained Terry. A few years later, Terry was ready for the next step. She could see
the industry changing. It wasn't enough just to do hair, you had to offer manicures,
pedicures, facials and more to compete in the ever evolving beauty industry. Her
family was growing as well. Husband PJ, a Baltimore City Firefighter, and their
three children (Lindsey, Megan & Jordan) were ready to expand.
The family moved to Harford County, Terry left her business partner, and
founded Jordan Thomas Salon, three doors up from the Bel Air Bakery. Within
five years Terry was ready for another step up. She moved her salon to Fulford
Commons and business just thrived. A few more years, and Terry is out of
room again. "Business kept growing, and we were getting really talented stylists
showing up at our door. Before you know it, parking is inadequate, we just
needed more space," said Terry.
Jordan Thomas has been in it's new home across from Festival for two years,
and her 6,000 sq. ft. salon is truly a shrine to beauty. Terry turned a three chair
business into a cutting edge salon offering the latest in beauty services. They offer
the expected services... hair and make-up, massages and facials, but have you ever
tried a Bioelements Citrus Fruit Oil Wrap, or a Herbology Body Retexturizer?
Even though Jordan Thomas could easily compete with the big city salons,
customer service is at the heart of their success. "I'm still working with clients
that I've had for thirty years. Even though the salon is very glamorous and chic,
we are very approachable. We're a Harford County business," said Terry.
Terry's most recent addition to her list of services is the Medi-Spa. "Women
want more than a facial these days. Chesapeake Skin Solutions offers
clients the latest technologies and therapies for laser hair removal and skin
rejuvenation, like chemical peels, spider vein treatment, Botox®, Latisse® and
more," explained Terry. There are so many ways to pamper yourself at Jordan
Thomas Salon and Spa, I can't possibly list them all. Check out her website at
www.jordanthomassalonandspa.com for some great ways to treat yourself to a
little beauty. You deserve it!

What inspires me as I Trend!
As we start the New Year of Designer Trends,
let’s take account of our own personal style! For
myself, I enjoy discovering the new looks in floral
design, how they relate to fashion and how they
work cohesively. That does not mean I force every
new trend into my designs. Yes, I mix in the
new color tones. This year, Pantone has named
"Radiant Orchid" as the Color of the Year, but
there are many more to consider. Gray is going
to be popular this year, mixed with bright
yellows and cream. Blues, reminiscent of all
things water, and dreamy pastels
are still fashionable.

The Royal wedding is still
influencing popular trends.
No matter what venue
you’re getting married in,
we’re going to see a huge
trend with couples
wanting to create
that outdoor feeling
inside in 2014. This
trend has been slowly
growing since the
royal wedding of
Prince William and Kate
Middleton, when the couple
had huge 20ft trees lining
the aisle, transforming
Westminster Abbey
into an English
country garden.
Large Centerpieces,
branches and other
outdoor elements like
pinecones, moss and
fresh herbs complete
this romantic look.
Bouquets
Bouquets are romantic with loose mixes of garden varieties like, peonies, garden blowsy roses, and hydrangea, adding dahlias in
the fall months. Brides planning a vintage-themed wedding will be pleased to hear that the current vogue for beautiful pastel
bouquets with a countryside feel are still in trend thanks to the third season of Downton Abbey. Garden-style bouquets aren’t
just for spring and summer brides – if you’re getting married in the colder months, why not incorporate moss and branches to
create natural-feeling flower arrangements. Succulents are also becoming popular and can make an unusual but striking display.
Flowers in Your Hair
Incorporating flowers into your hair, is a very romantic look from the
medieval times. It was very popular in the 60’s and early 70's, and is
making a strong come back for 2014.
Bold & Beautiful
Another emerging trend for this year will be going bold. Mix
and match the flowers, colors, and shapes to meet the distinct
personality of the couple. The brighter, the better, including
coral, tangerine, sunny yellow, hot pink, bright green, fuchsia,
and red. For a color explosion, use coral peonies, ranunculus,
pincushions, gerberas, carnations, and sunflowers.
I am always inspired by Brides and Grooms who come to
me for a consult and show me their inspiration books, and
Pinterest pages! Trends are just a starting point. You know
what you like. Stay true to yourself when choosing your
wedding flower designs, and on your big day, your flowers will
be a unique reflection of who you are.

Waters Edge Event Center
2 State of the Art Luxury 2
T
he long-anticipated Water's Edge Event Center, has finally
opened it's doors! This 22,000 square foot event space
is situated along the waterfront of a 200-acre multi-use
development that includes office buildings, waterfront housing
and a nature preserve. The old neon Bata Shoe Sign, which is
perched along side the event center, is the only remaining clue to
the property's original use.
We headed out of the ballroom and cut through the huge kitchen staffed full time by Beechtree
Catering, who has merged with Water's Edge Event Center. Chef Manny prepares creative,
and elegant cuisine for the center's events as well as the Bata Club. This private dining club
services members from the Water's Edge Campus and residents as well as corporate partners.
Their dining room sports rich woods and an elaborate bar. "This is a great space for a rehearsal
dinner," said Cathy. "We regularly relocate the Bata Club to a similar space upstairs, when
we have this rented."
"The detailing in this space is absolutely amazing. With our upscale
nautical theme I sometimes feel like I'm on a cruise ship," said
Cathy Dermott, marketing expert for Water's Edge. Cathy was
kind enough to give me a tour, and share some details on how this
amazing project came together. As I entered the spacious lobby in
search of her office, I was transfixed by the thin waterfall cascading
over a sheet of glass with the corporate logo in the center. The twostory display of living water sets the tone and feel for the rest of the multi-functional rooms and
spaces. Owner - Jim Foulk, a defense entrepreneur, builder - Clark Turner, and designer - George
Conte were the visionaries behind this unique venue, and I couldn't wait to see more.
On our way upstairs we passed the grand piano in the lobby. Cathy points out that their
partnership with the Maryland Conservatory of Music supplies them with talented pianists to
create the perfect ambiance. At the top of the stairs was one of my favorite rooms... the Bridal
Suite. This charmingly decorated room has every amenity a nervous bride could want. Beautifully
furnished, with a full length mirror, it's the perfect spot to hang with the girls. An adjacent full
bath, sports an ornately carved mirror, ideal for hair & make-up photos. The Bridal Suite doubles
as a VIP Room for corporate guests and speakers. Across the hall is the Raven Room - perfect for
the guys, or a corporate meeting.
There are several other meeting rooms upstairs. The Raven Room is set up for video conferencing,
fitting up to sixteen people. All the meeting rooms are configured for flexibility, containing stateof the art equipment, and luxurious detail. Marble top built-ins, exquisite lighting and rich
woods keep the feel cohesive. Passing down the hall, we reach another dining area, with even
more spectacular views of the river. Extending the view is a balcony with soft cabana style seating
for dining al fresco.
The tour begins and Cathy points out the intricately carved doors that lead to the three ballrooms.
"We have a bit of a bird theme here. The center ballroom is the Eagle, flanked by the Heron and the
Osprey. All birds you regularly see on the property," said Cathy. The three ballrooms can be used
individually or opened up into one Grand Ballroom. Floor to ceiling windows offer a panoramic
view of the scenic waterfront. A long pier jettisons out into the Bush River, and a patio offers guests

Vincent Licari began his journey out of Fallston High School aspiring to become a
fashion photographer. After showing his portfolio to local modeling agencies, he received
suggestions to use professional models and clothing. Because of this, he turned to making
interesting clothes to photograph. It was not until he saw the televised fashion event in
Rome called "Donna Sotto le Stelle" that he committed to the transition to fashion design.
Vincent turned to his family to learn the basics of tailoring. Largely teaching himself, he
experimented with textiles and embroidery. Along the way, he picked up additional hand
techniques from other couturiers. He has since collaborated with international stylists and
personal wardrobe consultants around the world.

“Power is like being a lady....if you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.”
These words were spoken by my idol, a woman who understood being
a leader and yet keeping true to herself, Margaret Thatcher.
410.661.5470
www.amandaritchey.com
Being dubbed the “Iron Lady”, she understood that leadership is about
authenticity and standing up for principles even in the face of strong
opposition especially while leading in a male dominated world.
I have been fortunate in my career to be in leadership roles including
Vice Commander for an Air Force Auxiliary Squadron working with
cadets and General Manager at the KHZTV radio network. Early on
in my military career, I ran in to the double standard that seems to
surround successful women leaders, the prevailing concept that women
are either perceived as too weak or too bitchy which takes away from
what they are trying to accomplish.
I made the mistake of focusing on how I was being perceived and not
on the importance of the message I was trying to relay. The behind the
hand whisper of “it’s because she is a woman” would stop me in my tracks
and cause me to not always push forward. What started to change me
was looking in to the eyes of my female cadets and seeing the look of
admiration and hope. Unbeknownst to me, I had become someone for
them to look up to. Showing those 14 year old girls that you can be a
successful leader while being authentic to yourself became my motivator.

What transpired by changing my own internal beliefs and thoughts
surprised me. There was a paradigm shift. While I was no longer
focused on if I was being too soft or too harsh, I was able to lead and
started changing the double standard that followed me. Those that
had snickered if I made a suggestion, now took my lead when I made
a statement. I no longer used words such as “like” or “maybe” but
changed to “we must” and “needs to happen.” I had become someone
that was to be respected and listened to no matter my gender.
How many times have you stopped to reconsider what you wanted to
say because you were concerned about how you would be perceived?
Had you had the strength to push forward, how could that have
made a difference? It might be uncomfortable but try letting go of the
attachment of being liked or popular. It might fall on deaf ears but you
will walk away stronger. With a stronger voice, influence increases.
I no longer want my leadership style to be defined
by my sex and with that belief my mantra has
become, that to be successful, I need to just be me.

Perfection
Takes Planning
"Finding just the right hair and makeup for your
wedding day can take several attempts before
you settle in on that perfect look. Planning with
a stylist in advance is crucial and allows you
to address all your needs and customize your
experience," explains Sandi Linkous, owner of
Merle Norman Spa in Bel Air.
Here are a few of Sandi's tips for looking
gorgeous on your big day!
2 Months Ahead • Initial Consultation
• Include your bridal party to ensure
a cohesive look.
• Discuss skin concerns.
• Have your skin type determined,
or use our online skin-typing guide.
• Select appropriate skin care treatments
• Start an exfoliation regimen
to improve skin texture and tone,
as well as give your complexion a
radiance boost.
For a Picture-Perfect Look:
• Choose shades tailored to your skin tone
and dress. Avoid intensely shiny or frosted
shades, which can catch the light during
flash photography & create unsightly shadows.
• Get a Foundation Check. Advise the Beauty
Consultant on the style of your dress so she
can match your foundation shade to the
tone of your neck, shoulders, chest, etc.
Veer slightly darker than your normal skin
tone, and/or match your face color to your
shoulders and chest for a seamless effect.
• Since flash photography can make you look
pale or emphasize ruddiness, choose a
warm or yellow-based shade to even out
your skin tone.
• Bring a camera to see how your makeup will
look when photographed. Consider getting test
photos done with your wedding photographer.
1 Month Ahead • Follow-Up Visit
• Get a Facial
2 Weeks Ahead • Follow-Up Visit
• Make sure you're in love with your look
1 Day Ahead • Before the Big Day
• Have nails manicured.
• Get a massage.
• Prep skin with Moisture Rich Facial
Treatment so makeup will apply smoothly.
• Find some private time and relax..

By: Alice McDermott
women gossip. She is on the sideline of life yet continues with her
unremarkable existence. She asks her brother, “who will love me?” and
he responds, “someone will”.
Someone is McDermott’s 7th novel and she admittedly wrote it about
an ordinary person with an ordinary life. The main character is Marie,
a child of the 1920’s. The story begins in Brooklyn, New York, with
Marie sitting on her front stoop watching and listening to the world go
by through her thick glasses.
The family is Irish Catholic, which is part of the cultural impact of the
story. Women of this generation were more reserved in their vocalization
of emotions and feelings. Consequently, they had an active internal life
and kept much to themselves. From losing her beau to a richer, better
looking girl to her interactions with her ex-priest, closet homosexual
brother, her assessments are usually spot on. So, despite her and another
character’s physical visual deficiencies; they can see people and the world
as it truly is (most of the time). The clear-eyed truth she can see with or
without her glasses. She philosophizes about “how thin the line could
be between the best-looking people who had all the advantages and the
rest of us”. Life is definitely not fair and often cruel.
The novel spans seventy years of Marie’s life through the typical
heartbreak and rites of passage of any ordinary girl. McDermott has
three themes that encompass her novel – (1) fools, (2) being ordinary,
and (3) the metaphor throughout of eyesight. She resisted writing about
seemingly more important characters, and there are many to choose
from. This was deliberate. Alice McDermott did not want to grab
the reader with the story but rather with the rhythm of the sentence
structure and vivid descriptions of each scene. In fact, the novel was
originally written in the 3rd person and she went back to rewrite the
entire novel in the first person to give Marie an unremarkable voice.
Our book club was torn. About half thought this was a great book and
the other half had difficulty getting through it. If you appreciate the
literary art of creating imagery and emotion with the written word;
you will like this book. Reading about the book is almost as interesting
as reading the book itself in many ways.
Recommendations: For a more in-depth understanding of the author’s
intent, watch her interview about the novel on Maryland Public
Television from October 2013 or visit the NPR website for their take
on this work.
Until next time,
This is not a glamorous story and it is not one with a memorable
climax and anti-climax. It is ordinary, as is Marie. Even as a young
adult, the front stoop has been replaced with the couch at her
employer’s mother’s apartment – she watches and listens as the older

7. When it comes to weight loss, set realistic goals.
Entering into married life is a transformative event, whether you are
22, 32, or 42. Moving from being single to committing to sharing your
life with another person is a celebrated milestone, and one for which
every bride wants to look and feel their best. While much of the focus
in wedding planning is on the dress, the décor, and the food, the bride
that focuses on balancing her mental and physical well being, is one that
enters into her marriage best equipped for a healthy and happy future.
1. Acknowledge your changing relationships with others.
Connect with the significant people in your life to acknowledge the change in your relationship.
Entering into a committed relationship with your new husband is one relational change, but
for your parents, siblings, best friends, and children (if you have any) this move forward is
altering in some way your relationship with them as well.
Twenty pounds in one month is not only unhealthy, but unwise, and makes for a cranky
bride. “Starvation will result in weight loss”, says Personal Trainer, Bonne Marcus “but so
will chopping off a body part, and that makes about as much sense.” A pound a week is
considered reasonable, so leave yourself enough time to reach your goals. If you follow tips 4,
5 and 6, weight loss will happen naturally, but it is always good to have a timetable with goals
so you can stay on track, and avoid unhealthy diets in the final weeks. “Brides often order a
dress in a much smaller size with the expectation that they will lose enough weight to fit into
it by their wedding day”, says one local professional bridal gown retailer. “This is often
unrealistic, and adds a tremendous amount of stress to lose weight quickly as their wedding
day approaches. A less stressful solution is to order your current size six months before your
date, and arrange for necessary alternations two weeks before the big day.
8. Make sleep a priority.
Take time to talk to your finance about what you both envision your life together will be like. So
often couples are so in love with one another that they neglect to have a conversation about how
they want to map out the rest of their lives. While best laid plans have a habit of changing, it is
still a good idea to make sure you are at least starting on the same page.
There is never enough time in the day to get all that we need to get done, but getting enough
sleep is of primary importance to your health. Ghrelin is a hormone produced mainly
in the lining of your stomach that regulates hunger. Lack of sleep can lead to increased
Ghrelin levels, which in turn can lead to weight gain. In addition, lethargy from lack of sleep
interferes with your exercise routine, and exhaustion increases cravings for sweets and carbs.
Plus lack of sleep can weaken your immune system, lead to puffy eyes, and wreak havoc on
your skin. If you can’t get a good night’s sleep, try to sneak in a nap when you can.
3. Avoid the pressures of the Perfect Wedding.
9. Be posture perfect.
2. Figure out how you envision your life together.
Stress is a huge factor in wedding planning, with TV bridal shows, magazine layouts,
and Pinterest sites raising the bar of perfection ever higher. Beware of the pressures of
conforming to the archetype, and feeling that you, your groom, and your wedding must
look and feel a certain way. Focus on what is important to you and not what others say is
important. Never be afraid to ask for help. Whether your wedding is big or small, elaborate
or intimate, everyone needs backup, so be sure you have your support system in place.
4. True beauty starts with healthy nutrition.
In order to look their best on the big day, many brides focus on the perfect hair and makeup.
A truly beautiful bride radiates from the inside out. “Dieting has a beginning and an end,
but good nutrition is forever”, says local registered dietician Lindy Ford. To get a read on
your food intake, she recommends keeping a food journal for 1 week to carefully track what
you are truly eating. Eliminate or reduce soda, processed/junk food, white flour, and added
sugar, and try and incorporate more fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and good fats. Fruits
and vegetables add micronutrients to your diet, protein supports muscle health, and good
fats such as those found in avocados and nuts will add glow and shine to your skin and hair.
5. Drink plenty of water.
Many of us are already chronically dehydrated, and stress just makes things worse. Dehydration
is often the cause of headaches, and can lead to dryer looking skin and hair. Water also helps
curb your appetite, as well as making you feel full longer. Enjoying a bowl of soup, a refreshing
mug of tea, or a delicious real fruit smoothie are great ways to up your hydration.
6. Strong bodies are sexy.
Looking great in your dress has a lot to do with how strong and confident you feel. Before you
start trying on dresses, map out an exercise plan for getting into the best possible shape before
your wedding day. Not only will you feel stronger and look great, but a regular exercise routine
will help keep stress at bay. Cardio and strength training are equally essential, one for endurance
and weight loss, the other for toning muscle and improving stability. Allow for 12 weeks to see
significant changes in fitness.
Nothing gives you a better silhouette than beautiful posture. It can take inches off your
middle, and give your dress a perfect line. If your neck and back are tight this may cause
your head to fall forward, if your chest and shoulders are too tight then your shoulders
will be rounded, and if your core is not strong, your whole upper body will slump. To
remedy these posture issues, focus on strengthening your
core through Pilates or ab toning, and use yoga or dance
moves to stretch your muscles on a regular basis. Make
an effort to roll your shoulders back, tighten your
midsection, and balance your head, shoulders, and
hips in alignment. Good posture might feel awkward
at first, but once you get used to it, your body will feel
more aligned and balanced.
10. Don’t forget to breathe.
Though it is necessary for life, breathing is often underrated.
In many stressful situations we unwittingly hold our breath,
or take rapid shallow breaths. To control anxiety take the time
to relax and breathe deeply, in through your nose and out through
your mouth. By focusing on your breath you can learn to relax your muscles
and reduce your stress. Outside stressors
can’t always be controlled, but you
can control how you react
to them. The old advice
of taking a deep breath,
gives you a moment to
think, and relaxes the
body, giving you a mental
moment to stop before making
decisions.

Wine Lovers
wine in style
by Joe Lertch
I
don’t know about you, but it seems to me that the holidays went flying by this
year in the blink of an eye…. Blink its Thanksgiving…. Blink its Christmas….
Blink New Years Eve and New Years Day are gone. And here we are approaching
the next holiday at rapid speed… Valentine’s Day. It’s hard to believe that I’m
sitting here writing about Valentine’s Day when it seems so far off, and yet I
know it’ll be here and gone in the blink of an eye.
When I think of Valentine’s Day I think of chocolate, and chocolate and chocolate.
(Can you tell I love chocolate?)… Oh, and of course, I think about wine as well. So,
with Valentine’s Day around the corner, I thought I would dedicate this issue’s wine
article to wine and chocolate.
Now let’s understand that wine and chocolate can be a very tricky combination to get
right. There is no simple combination of wine and chocolate paring. To simply say
that Cabernet Sauvignon and dark chocolate is a perfect match is misleading. There
are so many different types and styles of Cabernet Sauvignon and each wine maker
has their own “recipe”… not to mention that there are so many flavors of a particular
dark chocolate and each chocolate maker has his or her own style and “recipe”. The
possibilities are near endless.
Some “basics” to wine and chocolate paring:
When you pair wine with chocolate, your best bet is to match lighter, more elegant
flavored chocolates with lighter bodied wines…. while matching stronger chocolates
with more full bodied, stronger flavored wines. The darker the chocolate the more
mouth-puckering tannin will be present. But a strange thing occurs: when you pair
I have to admit that in all my years of tasting wine, (and chocolate), there have been a darker, mouth-puckering tannic chocolate, with a red wine that is also tannic, the
numerous times when the match was a good one… but only one time when the match chocolate will often cancel out the wines tannins and allow fruit to show through.
was a 100-pointer! It was about 2 years ago. We had finished dinner and were moving
toward dessert. We were finishing the last of a bottle of Tempranillo from Spain. The Suggestions for Milk Chocolate:
wine was “Numanthia” from the Toro region. It was a delicious wine and we had really Lighter bodied Pinot Noir, and lighter bodied Merlot seems to work well with milk

to discover that someone had given us a box of chocolates for the holidays. We opened forget Sparkling Rose’s. I love a sparkling rose with milk chocolate. The finish often leads to
the box and I popped one of the dark chocolate masterpieces in my mouth, and then a delicious chocolate-cherry or chocolate-strawberry flavor in your mouth after you swallow.
took a sip of the Numanthia Tempranillo. POW!!! The stars and the planets aligned…
Suggestions for Dark Chocolate:
the world stopped, and the wine and chocolate in my mouth took me on a fantasy
When you’re trying to pair dark chocolate you need a wine that can stand up to the
ride. I will never forget how absolutely outstanding the combination was. The problem

Zinfandel comes to mind as working hard to create that memorable match with dark
type of chocolate and I have tried since to duplicate that evening with a multitude of
chocolate… but don’t overlook full bodied Tempranillo’s from Spain either. They can

also reward you with some great flavor experiences… and don’t overlook Port wines. A
This then brings up a very important component when trying to match wine and good Tawny Port or Late Bottled Vintage Port (LBV) can work very nicely with dark
chocolate: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PEN AND PAPER, OR TABLET, TO chocolate, or that special dark chocolate truffle.
WRITE DOWN THE EXACT WINE (including the vintage year) AND THE

and let the experimenting commence.
Wine and chocolate can be a very rewarding experience if you have the right combination.
There’s a lot of work to do… but if you find that
I’m going to give you some basic guidelines to help you along your journey to find that

POW experience…. But be patient, and experiment a lot… a lot… until you find it.
Then write the combo down and share it with your wine and chocolate loving friends. Happy Valentine’s Day. 1 Joe

SMART MONEY
Tips to Help You Plan
Now for Your Big Day
I
f you’re planning on getting married or remarried and haven’t
been paying close attention to the wedding industry, you may
experience sticker shock as you begin calculating costs. An average
American wedding costs the newlyweds and their families about
$26,000 — and that’s without the honeymoon tab.1
Even with a carefully pruned guest list and modest reception, it can be
difficult to pull off a wedding under five figures. Short of eloping, the
best way to manage wedding costs is to start early and plan carefully
while keeping finances in mind. The following tips can help you get
your wedding planning—and your marriage—off to a great start.
1. Communicate with mom, dad and the future in-laws.
To avoid misunderstandings, hurt feelings and unexpected expenses,
it’s critical to maintain open lines of communication with everyone
who is involved in the wedding planning process. This is especially
important for brides and their families, as tradition often puts the
mother of the bride squarely in charge of planning and dear old
dad on top of the checkbook. But things have changed, and it’s not
unusual for couples to share costs, or for the groom’s family to chip in.
2. Set a budget.
Regardless of who is paying, couples need to identify a wedding budget
before working out the details. This number should be based on what
you can afford, and should act as your reality check throughout the
planning process. Added costs can add up quickly, especially if you
aren’t calculating along the way. Knowing the maximum amount you
can spend will help you keep a level head as the caterer, bridal shop,
florist and other vendors start flooding you with tiered price packages
and fancy add-ons.
3. Be flexible and keep your focus.
Assuming you don’t have an unlimited budget, this is important
mental preparation for the tough decisions you will face in the
planning process. You may have elaborate visions in your head of the
ideal wedding day, but be prepared to adjust your expectations as you
come face-to-face with real price tags for wedding finery. Better yet,
focus on the purpose of the day and savor the true meaning. The right
attitude can help reduce your stress and lessen the pressure to seek
perfection in the not-so-important details.

4. Prioritize.
The hard work is in the
nitty gritty—figuring out
how to allocate your total
dollars. If accounting isn’t
a strength of yours,
seek out the many
wedding websites and
books that can help
you generate an itemized
list of expenses. Give the
necessary items top billing
and then whittle down the
extras that can add up quickly and bust your budget. Rose petals
as you walk down the aisle? Nix that if you want to keep your floral
costs in check. Professional photography? Plan on spending $1,000
or more. Be an informed consumer—research vendors and compare
costs before signing contracts.
5. Get a head start.
It’s smart to set your date further out if you need more time to save. Set
up automated savings between your checking and savings accounts for
consistent, non-negotiable contributions. Once you have the amount
you need or desire set aside, consider investing in an account where
you may earn some interest before the bills begin coming in postwedding day. Another benefit of an early start is availability. Couples
who wait to book their reception hall or photographer will have fewer
options and may pay a premium.
6. Don’t stop at wedding planning.
It’s tempting for newlyweds to pour all of their resources into their
wedding day, when it may be wiser to invest in the lifetime that’s
ahead. If more couples planned for their financial future with the same
energy and enthusiasm as their walk down the aisle, there would likely
be fewer marriages burdened by debt and worry. While you’re in the
money mindset, consider creating a financial plan that extends beyond
your wedding day with the help of a financial professional. Meeting
with a financial advisor before you get hitched is a wonderful way to
lay a strong foundation for your life together.
