letter from the president
Brooke Ziccardi, ASID, CID, LEED AP
Dear Membership,
What an exciting 2009/2010 term we have planned ahead! I am very honored to be serving as the ASID Orange
County Chapter President for the 2009/2010 term. Inclusivity, professionalism, and increased networking opportunities are all action words to describe the Board’s goals for this upcoming term. The phrase “getting back to basics”
will also apply as we continue to strengthen our relationships within the design community, as this current economic
climate has given many of us a “new normal” to experience.
As many of you may be aware, I have literally grown up within the interior design industry, with my mother and best
friend serving as the ASID Orange County Chapter President back in the early 90’s. My childhood memories are
filled with visits to her office and sitting at her drafting table. I share this story because each one of us has a path
which has led us to the interior design industry – for some of us, this is a second career, for others, it is something they always knew they
wanted to do from childhood. Regardless of how we all became involved within this industry, we all have something in common - a
deep respect for the industry and a desire to belong to a society which fosters professionalism, education, and increased experiences
for its membership.
In preparation for this new term, your upcoming Board of Directors and Committee Chairpersons had a “Leadership Orientation Day”
where all 30 of us had the opportunity to further acquaint ourselves with one another and fully understand our job descriptions and
responsibilities. Prior to the meeting, “branded” Generational Binder’s were created, specific for each leader, to serve as a general guideline about chapter protocol, meetings, in depth job descriptions, etc. An organizational leadership chart, editorial newsletter calendar
and a website posting calendar were introduced to the chapter leaders for easy reference tools . As organization is a keystone for
success, these Generational Binders will be left by this year’s leadership as a legacy to our chapter.
As it is our intention to bring our chapter “back to basics” – allowing us to focus on giving value to our membership through a variety of
NEW events and ideas… One such objective will be to create a consistent advertising campaign in our local magazines to show the
value, we as interior designers, bring to a prospective client, to a builder, an architect, and to the professional community.
Without the assistance of our volunteer leaders within this organization we would not be able to provide so many fantastic opportunities. Our recent Flea Market, chaired by Karen Ziccardi, was a fundraiser to support the 2010 community service project HomeAid,
which was a great success! The 2009 Trade Show provided the opportunity to nibble on wonderful food while viewing current sources
as well as checking out our new ASID OC products. A big thank you to Jamie Namanny and her committee for all their dedication
to this event!
To celebrate our extraordinary chapter leaders, past, present, and future – Riviera Magazine hosted an exciting evening to honor them.
The entire membership was invited to participate in this celebration to support and encourage future leaders to participate in our chapter
and celebrate the past leaders who have made this chapter the success that it is today.
2010 will be an exciting year for both our local chapter as well as the National Chapter of ASID as we will be celebrating our 35th
Anniversary! This year we will unveil a new relationship with the American Institute of Architects Orange County Chapter at a wonderful
networking event sponsored by LUXE Magazine. This will be the first time our two groups have formally gathered together to network –
again, going back to basics and establishing key contacts for potential business leads. The Editor-in-Chief of LUXE Magazine will help
demystify the editorial process of submitting a project.
Through strong organization and lots of planning in my President-Elect term last year, a strong foundation has been built to thrive in this
coming term. I am excited for this new beginning and anticipate a year filled with wonderful surprises, adventure and success for our
chapter!
With Much Enthusiasm and Respect,
Brooke Ziccardi, ASID, CID, LEED AP

letter from the president-elect
Barbara Keller, ASID, CID
Dear Membership,
It is with great excitement that I begin my time as President-Elect of our dynamic chapter. I believe this
is going to be a wonderful, successful year for all of us. Our Board has many terrific plans for the year
that will provide great opportunities to build relationships, learn new things, give back to our commu-
nity, and be inspired. Plus, on a more global note, the economy is beginning to pick up; what good
news!
As I look back over the challenges of this year, I have frequently reminded myself to look at what is really
important, and what consistently popped up in my mind are relationships—with family, friends, colleagues,
and clients. These relationships are what keep us going both personally and professionally.
Our chapter offers many opportunities to build relationships through our meetings and various events.
This has already happened with the outstanding Trade Show where designers, students, and our IP
members made great connections or reconnections. The Flea Market is a fun event that connects ASID
with new people, giving us the opportunity to let the public to know more about us, while other upcoming
events give our chapter the chance to give back to our Orange County community and make new
friends. We also have active Student Chapters whose members look forward to developing relationships with us.
We are very fortunate to have so many opportunities to reach out to others. I am looking forward to
continuing to build my relationships with each of you and to developing new friendships with new
members and students.
I wish you all a wonderful winter season filled with joy, inspiration, and much creativity!

2009 ASID Gala
By Susan Wesley, ASID, CID
2009 Gala Committee Chair
It was a beautiful evening at the Coto De Caza Golf and Racquet Club.
We began the evening with cocktails, hor'dorves and little Black Jack,
a teaser for later in the evening. Then right into to dinner, announcements and the awards ceremony. This year we had many stunning entries
that were shown on a big screen.
Mark Gerdes, Julia Caro, David Romero and James Kerr
Deirdre Eagles, Martin Buxton, Adriel Cogdal, Martin King
Our ASID IP Members really made this evening possible through their
generous donation of funds, raffle prizes and support. Please thank them
with your support of doing business with them in the future.

The most fun during the whole evening was when we adjourned upstairs
for dessert & coffee and the "Casino Royale" opened for business. It was
filled great music, cocktails and everyone having a grand time playing
Roulette, Craps and Black Jack. We had a crowd playing for fabulous
raffle prizes, like a Tiffany necklace and earring set and a round of golf
for four. We had to wind down the evening around 11:30pm, otherwise
we would of played on until the wee hours. I believe everyone had a
blast - I know I did!

Karen Ziccardi, ASID
This year I was honored to be presented
with our ASID Chapter Lifetime
Achievement Award. It is with great sincerity
that I thank our Board of Directors, our
President and the Awards Committee for
their dedication to this process. It was like
a walk down memory lane working with
Mona Clarke and Mary Swift, to help
pull together verbiage, drawings, and
achievements gathered from throughout
my career. Brooke Ziccardi and I had
fun looking through work I had done
during graduate school years until now
especially enjoying our mother/daughter
photos captured during our work abroad.
Adriel Cogdal graciously narrated the
presentation video prepared by Paul Self of Audio Visions. All of these volunteers gave selflessly of themselves during this process and it is with much

appreciation that I say “thanks” for their time and caring in preparing this

Steffanino’s Gallery
n the complex process of interior design, it frequently
seems as though the walls are left as an after-thought,
once the furniture, floor planning, and fixtures are
completed. Art and wall décor, however, is the finishing touch
that brings the entire vision together. A finely crafted painting
or sculpture is the icing on the cake. It is a tip of the hat to
all the hard work put into the room thus far.
During my time working for Steffanino’s
Gallery, it has been my pleasure to assist
many designers with a great diversity of art
and wall décor. Our client’s needs vary
greatly, from beautifully framed posters, to
custom made original artworks. At
Steffanino’s, we employ a professionally
trained staff of artists and craftsmen, who
can work with the interior design community to create unique works of art for a
specific location. Often the art is tailored
to work well with fabric swatches, wall color,
furniture, and even floor samples brought
to us by the designer. Sometimes this process
works in reverse, particularly when the
designer is working with a high-end residential client. I have had the opportunity
to frame some expensive works of art that
the homeowner had purchased, and then
wanted the entire room designed around
the art.
Of course every piece of art in the project
needn’t be an original museum piece. At
Steffanino’s I have often taken what would
have been merely a poster and transformed
it into what looks like an original artwork at
a glance. Methods such as canvas transferring, crackle finishing, and deckling the
paper edges, can all contribute to the
perceived value of a piece. This kind of
technique is particularly valuable when we
are creating art for a large hospitality, or
model home job, and the budget is of great
importance.
Here at Steffanino’s, all of us take great
pride in the creativity we are able to express
when it comes to meeting our client’s needs.

has always been our goal to transcend the role of the traditional frame shop, or art gallery, and provide our customers
with an experience they can’t get anywhere else. Above all
else, the process should be fun! Our staff truly loves what they

to make their client’s art work a unique expression of their

STEP ONE: In an effort to assist all candidates with their preparation for this exam,
the ASID Orange County Office facilitated a 35-minute presentation and 30minute question-and-answer session to help candidates gain comfort and confidence with their understanding of this exam and how to prepare for it!
The presenter for this event, Jan Bast, was eminently qualified to address our
NCIDQ questions and concerns. She is a professional member of ASID, IIDA
and the Interior Designers Educators Council. Jan served as President of NCIDQ,
is an ASID Fellow, an Educator, a Practitioner, with 15 years of experience working
on the NCIDQ Examination Committee.

Jan helped to dispel the most commonly held misperceptions about the exam.
To illustrate this, the following facts are highlighted:
· The NCIDQ is an entry-level examination geared toward practitioners with
experience in the field.
· The exam tests for minimum competency in interior design, regardless of an
individual’s specialization (residential or commercial).
· The pass rates range from 60 percent to 80 percent, depending on the section.

2009 ASID Design Trade Show
By Jamie Namanny, Allied Member ASID
Trade Show Director
Organizing an ASID Trade Show every year is exciting and challenging
at the same time. The objective is to bring qualified vendors and interior designers together to network and enjoy an evening of good cheer.
This year’s trade show met those objectives allowing all our guests to
come away with new and promising business connections. The trade
show was held again at the Bren Events Center at UCI, Irvine. Albeit the
show was smaller than last year’s show, the trade show committee
presented the same high quality event for which Orange County’s ASID
Chapter is known for in the design community.
We introduced a new top notch catering service that offered a tantalizing presentation for both the trade show and the CEU meeting. We
also introduced a professional speaker, Jim Nye, who entertained us with
his stage presence announcing door prizes and interviewing the vendors
and designers. Every year we strive to present the best possible ASID
Guests at the show!

institute rocks on!
Green Interiors at The Art Institute of California – Orange County
After the excitement of receiving our Accreditation by The
Council for Interior Design Accreditation in August, our ASID
Student Chapter and Interior Design Club has been re-energized and is focusing on all things green. In September, the members organized the Green Trade Fair to familiarize over 100 interior design students with
local green sources and to help provide much needed samples for their
color boards. Thirty-two of Orange County’s most outstanding green vendors
and manufacturers came for an afternoon of fresh outdoor air and wholesome rivalry; Bentley Prince Street, Steelcase, Sherwin Williams, Knoll, Plyboo,
Dura-palm, Lumicor, Design Tex, Haworth, Vetrazzo, to name a few. The ASID
student chapter provided beverages, as a fun raiser of course!
The Interior Designers Institute's Student Chapter is having
another tremendous year! Fourteen students are on the
Board with events loaded on the calendar and over 50 students attending
each meeting. A student mixer at Islands Restaurant, famous designers
speaking at events such as Nancy Corzine and Lisa Garriss, field trips to
furniture manufacturers and a holiday bash planned at the Blake House
Showroom in Laguna Niguel, are just some of the key events.
Life’s a Beach was the theme of the small park the students built for National
Park(ing) Day 2009. They decorated two parking stalls at the main entry to
Ai with waves (blue tarp), sand (beige carpet samples), canopy, towels and
surfboard to encourage passers-by to turn parking spaces into park spaces.
This global, one-day environmental event is sponsored by the Trust for Public
Land. Their mission is ‘conserving land for people’.
All IDI students are welcome to join the Chapter and join the fun.
IDI is doing another house with Furnishing Hope and Habitat for Humanity
and is still basking in the glow of the ASID National Award-Chapter
Webpage of the Year!
We’re attending Greenbuild! This is the largest green conference in the world
and the lucky few who get to go will be presenting an overview of the conference to the interior design department during one of the general ASID
student chapter meetings.
AI has a study/support group to help prepare interior designers for the LEED
Green Associate tests. We meet on Tuesdays between 5:30 and 7:00 in Room
208, Building C. We welcome all students, professionals and faculty to visit
us at any time. Email Jeans Simmons at [email protected] for more information.

Much Anticipated RealWorld DesignWeek Arrives for Orange County Participants
By Gigi Harris, ASID Student Member
Student Representative to the Board, ASID Orange County
ASID’s nationwide student mentoring program, RealWorld DesignWeek,
took place during the first week of November. After months of promotion
and registration opening in September, students finally had a chance to
experience a day-in-the-life of a design professional or industry partner.
Thanks to the many design professionals who offered their time to mentor
a student, over a dozen Orange County students experienced a unique
opportunity to shadow a professional for an entire day. Students travelled
to Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego to spend time with their
chosen designers. One designer even had a student come all the way
from Virginia! Shadow day opportunities in Orange County were limited,
with over twenty students on a list waiting to be paired with a professional,
so demand was high for the few shadow day events that were available,
most of which were taken on the opening day of registration.
Student reviews continue to come in and have all been very positive experiences for both students and professionals alike. Vanessa Evans, ASID
Student Member from the Interior Designers Institute in Newport Beach,
found her day with her designer to be enjoyable and informative. Her
chosen designer spent the day with her at the Laguna Design Center. “I
received tours of each showroom plus such goodies as catalogs and online

about the product.” Jessica Scott, Student Chapter President at
Westwood College in Anaheim, sent a text message immediately following
her shadow event thanking ASID for such an incredible opportunity.
“I was thrilled to be able to contribute to my student and give to them an
experience that would impact them in such a profound way. As a
professional I think we take for granted what little we have to do to give
back to our students and emerging professionals. A glimpse into what we
do on a day-to-day far surpasses what can be learned in a classroom setting
and is an invaluable contribution to a student designer”, comments Brooke
Ziccardi, President of the ASID Orange County Chapter. “It makes a huge
difference and affects them in ways we may never know”.
After spending the day with a Vice President and head designer for a
leading closet manufacturing company in Los Angeles, I can say that my
shadow experience was truly inspiring and one that only comes once-ina-lifetime. My mentor was so generous with her knowledge, openly sharing
her day-to-day experiences and fully committed to tailoring the experience to whatever expectations I may have had. I truly valued and appreciated her sacrifice of time and offer to stay in touch even after the event.
What an incredible gift from a student’s perspective!
RealWorld DesignWeek is an annual program that we hope you will participate in again next year! Thank you again to all who contributed time,
energy and knowledge to our design student community!

Chapter’s 2009 Installation
Luncheon Highlighted by
Success and Anticipation
Brooke Ziccardi, Julia Caro,
Diane Sparacino
By Julia Caro, Allied Member ASID Programs Chair
The Installation Luncheon for our 2009-10 Board and Committee Chairs was
held at the beautiful Sage On The Coast restaurant on September 29th.
Guests mingled amongst the sea green and chocolate décor on a
beautiful sunny afternoon. Chef Mead offered a delicious choice of his
most popular lunch items: a festive filet mignon tostada, a grilled chopped
vegetable salad topped with savory chicken and a panko crusted Barramundi
fish placed on vegetable risotto. After a sweet dessert was served, 200809 President Diane Sparacino took the podium to recap her exciting
year, highlighting events such as the Urban Living Tour. She thanked the
many volunteers, Industry Partners, sponsors and magazines that graciously
supported the chapter throughout her term. ASID-OC has their first second
generation President when Karen Ziccardi, 1993-94 President, swore in her
daughter, 2009-10 President Brooke Ziccardi. John Garcia, Past President
1995-96, swore in Brooke’s new board members: Megan Crane, Deirdre
Eagles, Barbara Keller, Paul Self, Diane Sparacino, Joy Wood, and
Laura Yorba. Brooke then spoke of the upcoming plans for her tenure,
which includes a Celebration of Leadership, a theme of inclusiveness
and the Chapter’s 35th Anniversary. The luncheon was a special event
honoring the achievements of Diane Sparacino, supported by her committees and board of directors. We caught a glimpse of the future with
many exciting things to come skillfully lead by Brooke Ziccardi, in collaboration with her board members and committee chairs.

Second Annual ASID – OC Flea Market
By Karen Ziccardi, ASID, CID
Chair, Flea Market
Our chapter’s second Annual Flea Market was held at the Stonemill Design
Center on Saturday, November 7th. Buyers were poised before 7am to
make purchases and were still enjoying the buying frenzy until 2pm (two
hours past closing time!). We all had fun and reaped the benefit of a terrific
sales day, earning $5658 after expenses. We are thrilled to share these
proceeds of $3395 with our selected charity, HomeAid, with the remainder
of $2263 being dedicated toe the interior design of our new ASID chapter
office at the Laguna Design Center.
Many thanks to all our interior designers, Industry Partners and friends who
contributed items for the sale, without whom we could not have prospered.
Special thanks go to our committee members Rick Campos, Deirdre
Eagles, Laura Yorba, Jamie Namanny, and Gigi Harris for their energy,
enthusiasm, sense of humor and dedication to the event.
Flea market shoppers with Karen and Brooke Ziccardi
Our student members were terrific and well organized. Our office manager,
Janet Quinley, was invaluable. Linda Daniels of Stonemill was one of our
most valued supporters and our President, Brooke Ziccardi, was our biggest
cheerleader!
Special thanks goes to Helen and the staff at Unicorn Delivery for their
generosity in picking up and warehousing donated items as well as delivering, unloading, and setting up the items on the day of the event. Unicorn
also delivered large items to customer’s homes and they packed up all
unsold items and delivered them to our charity.
Again, thanks to all for helping to make our second Annual Flea Market
such a great success!
Community Services
Update
By Rick Campos, Allied Member ASID
Community Services Chair 2009-2010
The ASID OC Community Services team is pleased to announce
our partnership with HomeAid OC to help facilitate our 2009-2010
Community Service Project. Founded in 1989 by the Orange County
chapter of the Building Industry Association of Southern California
(BIA/SC), HomeAid is a leading national non-profit provider of housing
and has provided housing for more than 100,000 individuals rendered
temporarily homeless due to circumstances beyond their control.
Partnering with HomeAid OC is one of many steps that ASID OC is
taking to reinforce our industry presence and professional image.
Together we will hand select a project that will improve our community and the quality of people’s lives. With the help of my co-chair
Bonnie Traut, we have already formed a “dream team” of design
associates who will help make this project a success. We look forward
to the support of our membership and industry partners as the project
progresses.
