the population according to government statistics.
The need for more power to sustain development has
never been more urgent but recent controversies over the
massive projects that are underway do not bode well for
these hopes. In Ethiopia the saber rattling between Egypt

over the Inga 3 Dam are just some of the stumbling blocks
to attaining crucial development goals.

of works chaired by Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan, at the
sidelines of the 22nd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of
State and Government of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia. When completed, the road project would transverse Ghana,

Reconstruction of the
Mount Coffee hydro

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
has broken grounds for the
rehabilitation of the Mount
Coffee Hydro Electric Plant in
Harrisburg, lower Montserrado
County. President Sirleaf said
the rehabilitation marks the
beginning of a life change for the
people of Liberia as it’s a quest
for affordable and cheap energy.
She said that the project is the
result of collective efforts of all
Liberians who have resolved
that affordable and cheap
electricity is the surest way for
an economic boom especially in
the manufacturing industry.
Sirleaf stressed that working
together as one people will further
direct the country’s development
efforts thereby accelerating
government’s
agenda

transformation of which energy
is of top priority.Lands, Mines
and Energy Minister Patrick
Sendolo indicated that the
rehabilitation of the Mount

for
economic
revitalization. President Sirleaf
urged the Harrisburg Township
Commissioner as well as
residents to take ownership of
the rehabilitation process by
cooperating with the engineers.
Besides power production
and transmission, the Liberian
leader indicated that the local
community will soon begin to
benefit from fish and other water
resources upon the completion of

Zambia embarks on airport upgrades
President Michael Sata has spelt out his Government's resolve to
modernise the country's international airports in order to bring them
to international standards. The President said Zambia would have all
her major airports upgraded to international standards, especially in
view of the location of the capital city, Lusaka, which is ideal as a
regional hub.
Mr Sata said Government was already developing Harry Mwaanga
Nkumbula International Airport in Livingstone into an ultra-modern
facility with the rehabilitation and the construction of a passenger
terminal building of a capacity of one million passengers at a cost
of US$40 million. Works at the airport in the tourist capital located
about 460 kilometres from Lusaka is almost complete and the
commissioning of the project is scheduled for April this year.
Mr Sata said the Government had released US$25 million for redevelopment of Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka with
a passenger terminal building of four million at a cost of US$385
million adding that the contractor is on site.

Ash Resources supplies fly ash for St
Helena airport project
South Africa’s leading fly ash supplier, Ash Resources, over the last
thirty years has successfully developed a by-product of Eskom’s
coal-fired power stations to be a key component of local cement and
concrete. The company also has a fine track record for the reliable
delivery of its innovative fly ash products for the construction of
challenging infrastructure projects regardless of size or distance. Few
current projects can be as fascinating and logistically challenging as
the international airport being constructed on St Helena.
A remote island in the southern Atlantic Ocean, St Helena is halfway
between Africa and South America. It acquired fame as the place
of Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile from 1815 to1821. With no airport,
goods have to be transported to the island on a specially chartered
vessel that takes five days to travel from Cape Town. That is all about
to change! To promote tourism with the aim of making the island
community more self-sustainable, the British Government is funding
the construction of an airport. South African contractor, Basil Read,
was awarded a Design, Build and Operate contract for the project.
Davis and Shirtliff Launches Grundfos
sub-factory
East Africa's leading water equipment supplier, Davis and Shirtliff has
launched its Grundfos sub-factory, an in-house assembly plant of the
world famous Grundfos SP borehole pumps to reduce waiting time for
out of stock pumps and improve market availability.
"We can now assemble at least 10 pumps a day, unlike before when
customers had to wait up to 16 weeks for pumps which were out of
stock," said Mr Alec Davis Group CEO, during the inauguration
ceremony held at the Davis and Shirtliff head offices at Industrial
Area, Nairobi.
"Grundfos has partnered with Davis and Shirtliff to ensure that our
customers' access products within the shortest time possible while
maintaining the global quality of our products," said Mr. David
Githendu, Grundfos Regional General Manager. The Grundfos
submersible pump will now be assembled in 2 hours at the factory,
then shipped to clients in the region. The KES4 million (US$46,360)
sub-factory comes at a time when Davis and Shirtliff has reported a
14 per cent rise in demand for its pumps in 2012, with the company
having sold over 80,000 pumps in 2013 alone.

and planning experience,
his dedication has seen him
commit to and complete
several projects.
12 Educational Background
r Kamulegaya Kamulegeya
attended the University of
Nairobi from 1972-1976 where he
attained a Bachelor’s degree in Architectural
Studies. In 1978, he started working with
Uganda Posts and Telecommunication
Corporation, first as an architect, and was
later promoted to Chief –Architect in the
Department of Building Construction.In
1984, six years later after the disbandment
of the Department of Building Construction,
Architect Kamulegeya left the Corporation
to work with Kaddu & Associates, a leading
Architectural firm before starting his own
company, Kamulegeya & Associates. His
company was registered in 1984, but started
operating in 1985 and still goes strong up
to date. Architect Kamulegeya has enjoyed
the role of project manager on many of his
office projects and he feels it has proved to
be part of his life and in which upgrading is
very vital.
Professional Experience
He is the principle Architect and Managing
Director of Kamulegeya & Associates, in
partnership with Architect, Mubarak Silim.
With over 30 years of architectural and
planning experience, his dedication has seen
him commit and complete several projects
that include; Auditor Generals’ office, ( still
under construction), Greenland Towers,
Cancer ward for Uganda Cancer Institute
at Mulago hospital, Commercial center at
Rweza Entebbe road, Kabuli hospital ward,
radiotherapy center at Mulago hospital, 22
fish markets for fish development all over
Kampala City, and Forestry Resources
Research Headquarters at Kifu Mukono for
National Agricultural Research Organization

Professional affiliations
Architect Kamulegeya is an active member
of Uganda Society of Architects, and a
certified member of the public procurement
and disposals of public assets authority
(PPDU), along with being registered with the
Architects Registration Board(ARB).
Philosophy
He believes in having good work ethics and
conduct, sticking to rules and regulations of
the architect governing body, the architects
registration board,( ARB), paying dues and
taxes as demanded , and deliverance of
quality work to maintain a good profession
reputation. His advise; “Be assertive, and
always on the lookout to get jobs both locally
and internationally”. Newspapers are the best
source of work opportunities he points out.
Architectural challenges in the
construction industry
He has this to say regarding the industry.
Hoax architects have partly affected the
architect association and this has led to loss
of lives, time and money. A number of semi
or non-qualified persons in the construction
industry have been assigned to projects of
which standards they cannot meet. This is at
the level of architects, project engineers and
contractors, leading to sub standard projects.
The number of buildings failing in the
country and killing or causing permanent
damage to people is partly because some
clients prefer cheap input as opposed to
quality, with the aim of cutting costs. This in
the end turns out to be more expensive than
hiring qualified persons, because the building
will have to be started all over again once it
has collapsed.

In contrast to the dynamic atrium, the drawing rooms
placed along the facades of the building in a strict and
regular sequence of columns and beams have a simple
and rational design. The varied pattern of windows not
only creates a strong visual effect – it also generously lets
the light flow into the building and offers a breathtaking
view of the Umeå River which is one of the main rivers in
northern Sweden.
The School of Architecture will form part of the new Arts
Campus at Umeå University, which will also comprise
the new Academy of Fine Arts and Art Museum – both
designed by Henning Larsen Architects. The new dynamic
centre of excellence is on a previous industrial plot by the
north beach of Umeå River. The objective is to create
an arena for education, research and entrepreneurship in
architecture, design, art and digital culture. Art, research
and society are brought together and will emphasise the
role of Umeå as a creative centre of excellence in a global
scale. It is expected that the Academy of Fine Arts and
Art Museum will be ready for inauguration in 2014 where
Umeå will also become the European Capital of Culture
Sustainability and materials
Sustainable materials have been used for the Umeå School
of Architecture. The exterior facing is larch wood and, on
the inside, local birch wood creates a contrast to the light
walls and contributes to achieving good acoustics. The
concrete floor gives an industrial and robust expression.
Early on in the design process, energy calculations and
daylight simulations helped to establish that the facade
should consist of wood with window holes instead of only
glass. This has been a key parameter in achieving a 50
percent energy reduction. Ventilation, lighting and heating
functions are ingeniously integrated in the bearing structure.
The air comes in under the floor and is transported to the
roof of the building via the columns and beams where
it is circulated round the building via perforated pipes.
Henning Larsen Architects is an international architecture
company with strong Scandinavian roots. Their goal is
to create vibrant, sustainable buildings that reach beyond
themselves and become of durable value to the user and to
the society and culture that they are built into.
Since the company was founded in 1959, they have
acquired a comprehensive knowledge of the many aspects
of building - from sketch proposals to detailed design,
building owner consulting and construction management.
Their competences are continuously developed through
their close collaboration with global partners, experts and
specialists.
The firm has shape, challenge and changes the physical
environment – from masterplans, urban spaces and
buildings to interior design, components and strategic
design – with the overall objective of providing the user
with a strong, visionary and thoroughly prepared design
adapted to the specific context. Henning Larsen Architects
attaches great importance to designing environmentally
friendly and integrated, energy-efficient solutions.
The firm’s projects are characterised by a high degree
of social responsibility – not only in relation to materials
and production but also as regards good, social and
community-creating spaces. Their ideas are developed
in close collaboration with the client, users and partners
in order to achieve long-lasting buildings and reduced
life-cycle costs. This value-based approach is the key to
the firm’s designs of numerous building projects around
the world - from complex masterplans to successful
architectural landmarks.

Kitchen makeover?
the suppliers every contractor should know
Today’s kitchens are more than just a place to cook, it is a reflection
of ones personality and a place to relax and entertain
Compiled by: Yvonne Andiva, Eric Mong'are
and Torah Onyango
In Africa demand for fitted kitchens is growing in leaps
and bounds given its fast expanding middle class with
disposable income. Fitted kitchen manufacturers who get
in on the ground floor will have the first-in advantage
and have the opportunity to grow brand recognition
and loyalty over the long term. From South Africa to
Nigeria and Kenya developers have been putting up well
appointed housing estates literally overnight with home
prices topping US$1million. Golf courses as part of these
estates is becoming the rule rather than the exception
which can attest to the changing tastes of today's home
buyers in Africa.
Gone are the kitchens of days past when all that was
required was a stove, pantry, fridge and sink. The
discerning homemaker today as well as commercial
kitchen operator wants style, quality and convenience all
wrapped into one. Fitted kitchens address these demands
and they are becoming the new standard
Concealment
One of the suppliers interviewed for this article puts it
this way “The contemporary kitchen design today has
two strong trends presently; concealment of the functional
elements, and secondly the use of ‘furniture’ proportions
and details to soften the impact on the space. In terms
of design, hidden kitchens are extremely popular and as
such, innovative and highly creative options are becoming
more readily available. The cabinetry needs to be desirable
and luxurious, and non-specific to the kitchen area with
flush cabinetry and minimal handles. This allows for
any necessary appliances to be concealed with the use
16 March 2014
incorporating textured and highly visual kitchen cabinetry,
such as rubberised effect lacquers, steel worktops or matt/
gloss glass cabinets.”
So along with cabinets comes quality tiling, sinks lighting
and appliances to complete the look. The modern kitchen
is no longer simply a utility where one prepares food, it
instead speaks of elegant taste, convenience and space for
one to not only cook but also entertain.
If you are planning to own a new dream kitchen
or remodel your current one, you should take into
consideration these various requirements. You should
have in mind clearly what purpose you want your kitchen
to serve and settle on a design that caters for those needs.
This will also enable you decide if you need any additions
to your kitchen with a touch of customizable cabinets and
countertops being the common ones.
of cleverly designed pocket, bi-fold and coplanar sliding
doors for the height of concealment and minimalist styling.
Incorporating functional storage systems such as dividers
for use in cutlery drawers and small mezzanine racks will
also provide additional storage in cupboard space, keeping
the necessary food and kitchenware out of sight. Pull-out
rack systems and deep pantry drawers or a simple worktop
extension are other avenues to explore creating additional
zones in which to relax and replenish, cook without
restriction and of course entertain. Not only designed with
cooking in mind, this trend for hidden kitchen design has
also reached as far as the concealment of laundry products.
Whether that be a large or small appliance the options are
endless, playing perfectly to the bespoke requirements so
customary these days.
Space and colour
In case you are thinking revamp, functional space is
key. You should go for a design that works well for you.
Consider carefully where to place various appliances such
as the refrigerator, cooker and microwave. The design you
settle for should give you enough room to cook, eat and
entertain.
A good kitchen design should also give you enough
storage space for your pans, utensil and other small
appliances. Your kitchen space should also look appealing
to your guests and you can simply achieve this by
employing clever use of colors which will go a long way
in creating a favorable ambience.
You should also consider the cost. Always go for a
design that will fit your budget. Engaging a professional
kitchen designer if you can find one will help you achieve
your desired design which is within you budget. There
are many kitchens layouts which can accommodate any
available space. So if you have a small space you need
not worry as even a small space can have spacious storage
with a nice flow. For instance for small spaces, always
think vertical designs and L-shaped or U-shaped kitchen
with a large center island for larger layouts.
Materials
In terms of material, this is what he goes on to say: “A real
design advantage comes in the form of unusual or colour
surfaces such as mirror/glass and stone/ceramic. This has
allowed homeowners to inject small areas of personality
and individuality in the design. Rustic timber finishes
and textured, three-dimensional veneers also remain a
strong choice adding depth to furniture, all the while
depicting different shades of colour. Matt lacquers with
tactile finishes and interesting veneers are also popular,

Taking chillers to
the next level
Compiled by: Yvonne Andiva, Eric
Mong'are and Torah Onyango
hillers have become an indispensible
piece of equipment that cools
equipment or the air in many
commercial facilities. Even in Africa where
temperatures are normally modest, vital
equipment in places like hospitals require
chillers in order to operate correctly. Other
places where they find use is in hotels and
industrial facilities.
In today’s energy conscious world, chillers
need to meet much higher energy efficiency
levels as well as environmental demands
in order to pass the bar. This has promoted
greater innovations designed to give a greater
bang for the buck. One such innovation has
been with water cooled chillers for instance.
These are taking over from air cooled ones
because they take up less space, ling effects.
However different applications will require
different types of chillers so never think that
one size will fit all.
When looking for an industrial chiller look
at the total life cycle cost, the power source
and capacity noise levels. Employing the
services of a professional will greatly assist
in this task as some of the more technical
aspects will be way above the ability of a
layman to work out.
In this issue we take a look at some of the
global players and what they have to offer.

20 VRF: Latest design on the market
Air conditioning systems industry has
evolved over the years since ancient Rome,
when the first system was developed- when
aqueduct water was circulated within
the walls of luxurious Roman estates to
keep them cool, with the first modern air
conditioning system developed in 1902 in
order to reduce humidity problem.
Since then, every air conditioning system
is designed to provide comfort in homes,
restaurants, trains, ships, hospitals, etc., and
also to relieve discomfort of allergies by
removing pollen from air, and helping to
preserve the health of patients in hospitals.
In business and industry, air conditioning
systems are designed to improve the
efficiency of workers, ensuring uniformity in
metal work and to prevent too much or too
little moisture from damaging f r a g i l e
paper products. A number of companies
such as Hisense VRF, Mitsubishi Electric,
Samsung and LG manufacture and distribute
products tailor-made to their client’ specific
needs, and to provide year round comfort
whilst reducing energy consumption.
Variable
Refrigerant
Flow
Systems (VRF)
Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) System is
one of the latest and the most energy efficient
technologies available on the market. The
system consists of a number of air handling
units connected to a modular external
condensing unit and the refrigerant flow
is varied using inverter controlled variable
speed compressor, or multiple compressors
of varying capacity in response to changes
in the cooling or heating requirement within

the air conditioned space. In more advanced
versions(Heat Recovery), the indoor units
may operate in heating or cooling mode
independently of others, offering energy
savings when heating and cooling are
required simultaneously in different zones.
Most manufacturers the world over have
taken the VRF route because of its energy
efficient technologies and its environmental
friendliness. This is due to the system’s
ability to speed up and slow down according
to the load required in the building space
and thus providing precise temperature
control, explains Kevin Baker, National
Sales Manager from Hisense VRF. Most
VRF systems are very
compact,
space saving and offer
flexibility
to install without needing cranes to move
condensers, because they come in modules
that can be carried through the elevator/ lift to
the roof of the building. In addition, they also
offer competitive advantage through superior
control system- on-site and off-site building
management(BMS), adds Baker
VRF Controlling System
The VRF systems boast a number of
controllers, such as the remote control switch,
wireless remote control switch, central
station, a 7-day timer, and an individual
control system. In addition, it includes a
Building Management System (BMS) and
H-Net Management System (HMS).
Eurochiller S.r.l.
Established in 1990 in Italy, EUROCHILLER
designs, manufactures and assists industrial
cooling systems with capacity included
between 2 and 1220 kW as well as water and
oil temperature control units with heating
capacity ranging between 3 and 140 kW.
Their design and manufacture are 100percent
completed in Italy at their Castello
d’Agogna’s premises, employing about 50
workers and before shipment, each single
unit is thoroughly and carefully checked and
tested, to respond to the most severe quality
controls they apply to their production.
Their newest project goes under the claim
"THE POWER OF WATER" which is the
inspirations that drove EUROCHILLER
to first study and create a new and exciting
cooling technology aimed at achieving the
highest energy savings (The ADY-NAX)
Designed to significantly reduce energy
consumption and improve production
efficiency, the ADY-NAX is ideal for the
growing number of manufacturers interested
in solutions that offer the right combination
of cost, quality, efficiency and environmental
safeguard.
Representing their goal to continuously
develop, improve and innovate their products
– even during these critical years – the
ADY-NAX really is more than just another
product; it’s a project that will change the
future design of cooling systems for injection
moulding machines and extruders. Sabrina
Gangini (Marketing Manager) underlines
the importance to always go into details of
offered products and to focus attention on the
reliability of components and the seriousness
of a supplier when shopping for cooling
systems.
She adds that the industrial processes are
not the HVAC ones as the products destined
to cool down a process are meant to work all
year round, and this can happen only if the
selected chiller has been studied, designed
and manufactured to match this scope. What
must not be forgotten is that the choice of the
wrong chiller results in lost production time
which translates into financial loss.

accessories, making Aggreko’s TC offering one of the
most complete on the market. Aggreko is well positioned
in Africa, having operations in 46 out of Africa’s 55
nations. As a global company, Aggreko adheres to the
highest standards of corporate governance and promises
to deliver quality solutions while working very much as a
local company.
Having worked across a broad range of sectors that
include mining, oil and gas, manufacturing, utilities and
events, Aggreko’s engineers are well versed with the
specific needs of their customers. Whether it’s providing
a mining company with cooling solutions for underground
or open cut mines, chillers for the broadcast facility of a
mega sporting event, or even temporary air conditioning
to hotels or hospitals, providing customers with peace of
mind is at the core of Aggreko’s offer.
This is evident from their impressive portfolio of major
global players and repeat business. Recent customers
include the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic
Games, the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games
and the power utilities in over 50 countries including
the UK, France, Angola, Kenya, Indonesia, Bangladesh,
Venezuela, Chile, Brazil and the USA.Chris Wishart,
Regional Temperature Control Manager, Aggreko Africa
says that their equipment is built to meet their particular
operational requirements.
A generator or chiller is normally designed to be
permanently installed and rarely, if ever, moved. Its
performance will also be adapted to the regulations and
ambient conditions of the country in which it is sold.
An Aggreko generator or chiller will be picked up and
put down multiple times during its working life, and be
required to work faultlessly in locations that may reach
temperatures of +50°C, and a few weeks later, at sub-zero
temperatures on the peak of a mountain for example. We
use the highest quality material – given the choice of 6mm
steel for a bed-plate, or 8mm, we choose 10mm.
Johnson Controls
Johnson Controls is a global diversified technology and
industrial leader serving customers in more than 150
countries and their focus is mainly on Africa. Johnson
Controls market through many channels; they sell directly
and through agents. Neil Cameron, Area General Manager
of Johnsons Controls says, “TheYVAA and YMC2 have

Ark Construction Limited
Founded only five years ago, we look at what it has taken for Ark Construction
Limited to earn its place in the highly competitive construction industry in the
country.
A
rk Construction Limited was founded in 2009 by
Mr Kurji Kalyan Kerai and Mr Narendrabhai
B. Patel. The two possessed vast technical and
managerial experience in the construction industry, a
factor that could be attributed to the fast pace at which the
young company has grown in that short period.
Currently Mr Kurji Kalyan Kerai serves as Managing
Director and oversees the day to day operation of the
company while Mr Bharat Kerai serves as a Senior
Projects Manager, a role that puts him in charge of most
of the company’s interior fit-out projects. The company’s
other human resources include 5 Project Managers,
11 supervisors, 3 Quantity Surveyors, 10 Site Agents/
Foremen, 20 Administration staff and between 150-400
workers who are hired on a regular basis depending on the
volume of work currently being handled. The team works
seamlessly to ensure smooth operations. Registered with
the National Construction Authority, Ark Construction
Limited has embarked on an apparently well defined path
to growth with a clear vision and objectives.
“We will strive to attain a leadership position in the
market”, says the management. “We choose to serve
by creating innovative and value added solutions to all
construction related problems so that we deliver impeccable
26 quality works”. To underline its commitment to provide
quality services with efficiency, Ark Construction Limited
has already applied to the Kenya Bureau of Standards
(KEBS) for the ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management
System (QMS) certification.
It believes that this
certification will reaffirm its determination to deliver high
quality projects. In addition, the company has also applied
for the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
(EMS) to show its commitment to a greener Kenya.
Areas of Specialization
Ark Construction Limited undertakes the following broad
categories of works:
• Building construction and associated civil works
• Office and shop fit-out
• Metal and timber fabrication
• General renovation works
• Landscaping
Completed Projects and Challenges Faced
Masaai Mall
This was a project at Ongata Rongai shopping centre on
the outskirts of Nairobi. Unlike a project on a virgin site,
the land had been previously developed with a mall and

Tom Mboya Street, Nairobi
This involved demolition of an existing building.
The biggest challenge faced during this project was the
fact that Ark Construction had to pull down an existing
building consisting of a multi-storied shopping mall.
It involved working in enclosed spaces as the site was
surrounded by other buildings. Being in the Central
Business District, traffic was a major problem and delivery
of materials was challenged by both human and vehicular
traffic congestion.
Ark Construction also had to ensure that surrounding
businesses experienced no disruption to their activities as
the work went on.
Residential house, Lakeview, General Mathenge, Gigiri
In this project, Ark Construction was tasked with taking
down old buildings in order to replace them with new and
improved ones. Notable challenges in this project were
unfavourable weather (which caused significant project
delays and negatively impacted cashflows) and unstable
prices of key materials such as steel and concrete.
Other Projects
Among other projects that Ark Construction has undertaken
are:
• Proposed residential house in Lakeview - Nakuru
Street, Nairobi
• Proposed townhouses along General Mathenge Drive,
Nairobi
• Residential house, Gigiri, Nairobi
• Erection to completion of residential house, complete

Kenya
acres of old parking and substantial infrastructure were in
place. Many of the water, sewer and power lines were not
well documented and Ark Construction had to use great
caution when working at the site. This particular project was
also a potential safety hazard for the company’s workers.
In addition, several businesses were still using the old
infrastructure and any interruptions to services would have
shut them down. Ark Construction therefore worked to
ensure minimal interruption.

Availability of credit
As far as Ark Construction is concerned, availability of
credit is not as issue for the company. “We have a very
good reputation with all our suppliers and sub-contractors.
Our payments are made on time and this garnered us a
very good reputation with potential suppliers. Most of the
materials we buy are on credit from our supplier unless
we need something urgently from a supplier we have not
done business with, and then we obviously need to pay in
cash or cheque”.
Quality of training
Mr Kerai sees a clear lack of quality training in the
construction industry in general. “The quality of projects
and finishing we see in general is not up to international
standards and health and safety regulations are not as
strictly adhered to”, he observes. He adds that although
the government is trying its best to bring in measures to
make sure there is maximum compliance, it may take a
couple of years before change can be seen.
PricewaterHouse Coppers (PWC) at Delta tower, Westlands.
Future
So where is Ark Construction headed? “We are quietly
optimistic in our ambitions for this company”, says Mr
Kerai. “I believe that with our unique selling point of
providing high quality services to our clients and meeting
tight deadlines has helped us maintain good rapport with
will all the consultants we have worked with. We are
regarded as one of the best in terms of delivery and quality
by most high profile consultants and this has enabled us to
be a leading contractor for several banks and multinational
companies as mentioned in the projects above.”
Mr Kerai says although Ark Construction’s core business
at the moment is interior fit-out, the company has recently
undertaken several civil and general construction projects
and is expecting to undertake more civil and construction
projects. It hopes to become the market leader in both
interior fit-out and general construction.
Kenya
Ark Construction’s Perspectives on the
Industry in Kenya
Business climate
According to the company’s Senior Project Manager Mr
Bharat Kerai, the construction sector in the last seven
years has been booming. As a result, there has been an
influx of international companies especially from China,
hence driving up competition and bringing down prices.
However, although at the moment the impact is not being
felt significantly owing to the huge market, Mr Kerai
predicts that the situation may not remain the same.
“I feel that in the long run this might hurt the budding
entrepreneur who will not be able to compete with cut
throat prices unless he has the financial muscle and
goodwill in the market”, he says.

The home of iconic architecture
Ethiopia
Addis Mebratu Consulting Architects and Engineers is widely respected throughout
Ethiopia for creating contemporary designs that stand out amidst competition.
L
arge scale infrastructure projects taking place
throughout Ethiopia have raised the bar of
excellence for firms in the field of architecture and
engineering to aspire to and in the face of stiff competition
from rivals, Addis Mebratu Consulting Architects and
Engineers continues to rise to the occasion, with every
project it handles.
Established in 1998 by architect Addis Mebratu as a
medium-sized entity, the company has continued to grow
consistently, gauging from the number of projects it has
delivered to the satisfaction of clients drawn from various
sectors. Thanks to dedication and focus, Addis Mebratu
Consulting Architects and Engineers has now graduated
from a relatively small architectural firm into a Category 1
Architectural and Engineering Firm.
Specialty
Addis Mebratu says his firm is involved in the design
supervision and contract administration of different types
of buildings that range from residential and apartment
projects to international hotels and high rise office
buildings.

Challenges
It would be an understatement to say that in the course of
work Addis Mebratu Consulting Architects and Engineers
is not confronted with challenges, Mebratu reveals. He
says: “Our biggest challenge has been the relatively low
fee for architectural services in Ethiopia which is partly a
result of low level of awareness on the part of the clients
(both private and government) with regard to the value of
good design and quality based selection of architects and
partly due to a dysfunction in the market for architectural

be attributed to the fact that it immediately filled a need

using earth piercing or moling tools and pipe ramming.

which allowed the company to undertake a full range
of horizontal boring for pipes from 25 to 160 mm, pipe
bursting from 110 to 315 mm as well as pipe ramming up

“We made good progress in pipe bursting for various

for Trenchless Technologies.
As technology continued to improve, Trenchless

use only the spiral wound technique throughout, however
the site conditions required the additional use of CIPP and
pipe bursting at certain locations.
“The project is an excellent example of using trenchless
technology options to address unexpected site conditions,
allowing the project to be completed successfully without
excavation and surface disruption”, stated Efrat. The
March 2014
41
company made use of several trenchless techniques to overcome the
challenges posed by the project, which included spiral wound pipe
expansion to a close fit (both SPR EX and SPR RO technologies),
spiral wound pipe grouting in-place (SPR PE), ambient CIPP, UV
CIPP and pipe bursting to successfully complete the project.
The ABSA Bank Energy Centre Sleeves Reticulation project
has been the most challenging and interesting for Trenchless
Technologies, adds Efrat. The project required the installation
of 85 sleeves using HDPE pipe from 110 to 710 mm, up to 16
m deep beneath roadways, to connect several of ABSA Bank’s
CBD buildings with gas, electricity, fibre optic, chilled and hot
water. According to Efrat, a number challenges were encountered
during the undertaking of the ABSA Bank Energy Centre Sleeves
Reticulation project.
Though they were not insurmountable they included the
following: The basement floors that were to designed to support
the weight of a typical sedan vehiclenecessitated propping from the
floor below to add support to all areas over which the HDD drill
South Africa
needed to travel to get to the required position within basements.
A floor to floor height restriction, requiring that all equipment be
less than 2.1 m in height- leading to the Terra-jet being refitted by
removing the operator cabin, rebuilding the hydraulic tank, as well
as lowering the encapsulation body work.
In addition, 65 installations took place in clay, while the
remaining 20 were in rock, and this necessitated the use of
percussive hammer and rock reamers to expand the holes to the
required diameters. Other challenges involved drilling through
lateral support ground anchors which were encountered during
drilling in dozens of locations. In order to gain access to the drill
face coring to remove concrete, lateral walls from 300 to 500 mm
thick were also required.
Trenchless Technologies has become a trendsetter in the trenchless
technology industry and in the past 20 years, the company has
successfully completed hundreds of contracts, and achieved
a number of awards which included the 2000 SAICE Pretoria
Branch Award for Technical Excellence, 2007 (SASTT) Award of
Excellence for the Rehabilitation of Sewer Pipes in Klipspruit Basin,
together with Johannesburg Water and consultant Vela VKE, 2009
(SASTT) Award of Excellence for the ABSA Bank Energy Centre
Sleeves Reticulation project, 2010 CIDB Construction Summit
Award for outstanding performance in South Africa’s construction
industry, and 2012 (ISTT) International Project Award for the
rehabilitation of two parallel sewer pipes in Port Elizabeth’s CBD.

procurement (IPP) program has
resulted in the construction of the Greefspan
and Herbert Solar Parks situated near
Douglas, Northern Province, South Africa.
The construction of the two renewable
energy projects owned by AE- AMD
Renewable Energy in partnership with
the IDEAS Fund, an infrastructure fund
managed by Old Mutual Investment Group
of South Africa, commenced with Herbert
Solar Park in December 2012, followed with
Greefspan Solar Park in January 2013. Both
projects are set to be handed over to AEAMD in April 2014.
SunPower acted as AE-AMD Renewable
Energy’s Engineering, Procurement and
Construction (EPC) partner for both
projects. These are jointly sitting on 167
hectares of land and entail ground-mounted
44 solar systems featuring 137,862 photovoltaic
solar panels on single-axis trackers. The
trackers are programmed to follow the sun
throughout the day, ensuring that maximum
amount of power is being generated.
Herbert Solar Park is set to produce 22
MW, and as of early February, 19 MW
had been generated, and the plant has
already exported 9 GWh to the national grid
(Eskom). In addition, Greefspan Solar Park
is set to produce 11 MW.
Besides designing and manufacturing
solar panels and systems, SunPower also
has a successful track record of building
solar power plants around the world. The
company’s global track record includes
recent achievements such as the California
Valley Solar Ranch, a 250 MW project in
California.
In addition, construction is ongoing on
the largest solar plant development in the
March 2014
world, Solar Star, a 579 MW plant. Once completed, it
will generate enough energy to power 400,000 homes.
“SunPower is taking a long-term view on the promising
South African PV market. Following the completion
of this project, the team will get ready to kick off the
execution of an even larger installation in the Prieska
municipality later this year.” said Mario Riello,
Managing Director, Utility Power Plant Sales, EMEA
and India.
SunPower will provide Engineering, Procurement and
Construction, as well as Operations and Maintenance
for a 75MW ground-mounted solar power project in
Prieska. SunPower majority shareholder, Total along
with their partners, MuliloSolar Enterprises (PTY) Ltd
were selected as preferred bidders for this project by
South Africa’s Department of Energy in the third round
of their Independent Power Producers procurement
program.
SunPower has worked closely with the local
municipality to ensure employment opportunities for the
community, not only during the construction, but also
for the lifetime of the Herbert and Greefspan projects
as part of the operations and maintenance plan. Since
breaking ground, the projects have generated more than
300 jobs in the local community, including the hiring of
local contractors.
Security measures have been implemented in the form
of an electric fence that has been erected to protect both
plants, with an anti-burrow feature specifically designed
to protect small animals. The site also has 24 hour
security and night vision cameras.

ransnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), one of
five operating divisions of Transnet SOC Ltd has
embarked on the upgrade and expansion of the
Durban Port in the KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa.
The Durban Container Terminal (DCT) is the biggest and
busiest in the Southern Hemisphere and currently handles
64 percent of the country’s seaborne container traffic.
Each year, more than 4000 commercial; vessels call at
Durban and according to forecasts, container traffic is
growing at 8 percent a year.
The current yearly volume of container trade through
Durban is 2.69 million 20 foot equivalent units (TEU) of
cargo, which is expected to grow to between nine million
and 12 million TEU by 2040. The new port situated in the
Prospection/ Isipingo industrial area will consist of sixteen
