Brasília Routes Overview
The map of the main portion of Brasília, called “Plano Piloto”, has the shape
of an airplane viewed from above. That's why its main boroughs are called
“Asa Norte”, which means “Northern Wing”, and “Asa Sul”, which means
“Southern Wing”. A simple map of Brasília is showed in Fig. 1.
Fig. 1: Simplified representation of the main routes in Brasília.
There are two major avenues that crosses Brasília:
• Eixo Rodoviário from South to North; it is usually called “Eixão”,
which means “big axis” and it passes through the “wings” of the
airplane figure of Brasília map;
• Eixo Monumental from West to East, so called because the main
monuments of Brasília are located there.
There are two series of routes parallel to “Eixo Rodoviário”:
• W, W2, W3 and so on to the West;
• L, L2, L3 and so on to the East.
Most Brasília buses passes through W3 or L2, that are showed in Fig.
2. The bus routes that take one to the university from the hotel zones usually
runs through the whole Northern half of W3 and then return through L2.
Fig. 2: Brasília main routes.
Location of the Airport, the Hotel Zones and the University
Most hotels in Brasília are located in the zones called SHS (“Setor Hoteleiro
Sul”) and SHN (“Setor Hoteleiro Norte”). Some hostels (“pousadas”) are
located along the Southern half of W3 (“W3 Sul”). Touristic hotels are found at
the edge of the lake “Lago Paranoá”.
Fig. 3 shows the location of the Brasília International Airport (“Aeroporto
Internacional de Brasília – Juscelino Kubitschek”), the hotel zones SHS and
SHN and the University of Brasília (“Universidade de Brasília – UnB”).
Directions from the airport to SHS and SHN
In order to arrive there from the Brasília International Airport (“Aeroporto
Internacional de Brasília – Juscelino Kubitschek”), one can take a bus or a
taxi.
If you want to go by bus, there is an Executive Bus (“Ônibus
Executivo”) each 30 minutes that can take you directly to the SHS or SHN
areas. The stop of these buses is located in front of arrival gates 4 and 5.
Some photographs and more information in Portuguese about the executive
bus are available in the followed site:

Information about other bus routes from the airport is provided here:

If you want to go by taxi, there are many registered taxi companies in
the airport. A “registered taxi” (“táxi credenciado”) is usually prepaied (must
be paied before the ride) and a little more expensive than a normal taxi that
one can take on the streets. More information is available in English in the
Airport web site:

Fig. 3: Location of Brasília Airport, hotel zones (SHN, SHS), university (UnB) and the “Street of
Touristic Hotels” (Estrada Hotéis de Turismo).
Directions from SHS and SHN to UnB
Probably the only way of going from SHS or SHN directly to UnB is by taking
a taxi that you can ask for in your hotel reception. We advise you to provide
the following address to the taxi driver:
Universidade de Brasília – UnB
Centro Internacional de Física da Matéria Condensada – CIFMC
Asa Norte
Brasília DF
The easiest way of getting by bus to the University of Brasília
(“Universidade de Brasília – UnB”) from both SHS and SHN is by taking a bus
at the W3 avenue (either “W3 Norte” or “W3 Sul”) towards the “L2 Norte”
avenue, getting off the bus at SQN 407 (further explained in the next section)
and then going on foot to the university. Another possibility is going to the bus
station (“Rodoviária”) and then taking a bus directly to the University;
“Rodoviária” is usually very crowded. You can choose one of the following
bus routes:
• From both SHS and SHN:
◦ 106.2 - CIRCULAR / L2 SUL - NORTE / W3 NORTE - SUL
• From SHN:
◦ 0.116 - RODOVIARIA DO PLANO PILOTO / AVENIDAS W3 - L2
NORTE
◦ 116.1 - CIRCULAR / RODOVIARIA DO PLANO PILOTO / W3
NORTE / L2 NORTE
◦ 632.2 - CIRCULAR
• From SHN:
◦ 145.1 - ESTACAO ASA SUL - W3 SUL / L2 NORTE (ESPLANADA)
• From Rodoviária:
◦ 0.110 - RODOVIARIA DO PLANO PILOTO / UNB
Getting off the bus to reach UnB
Fig. 4 is a handy illustration of the “coordinate system” used to number the
blocks of Brasília, with the approximate location of the block “607 Norte”
where a great part of the university campus is.

The route L2 Norte passes between the blocks 400 and 600. That is to
say that the buses that come from SHN and SHS will pass between 416 and
616, then between 415 and 615, then between 414 and 614, and so on.
Green plates with the number of the blocks are visible from inside the bus.
You must get off the bus when it is between 406 and 606: when you see a
plate with arrows showing the directions towards 207, 407, 208 and 408 (as
showed in Fig. 5), it will be time to stand up because you must get off at the
next stop.
Fig. 5: The bus stop through L2 Norte that is nearest to UnB is behind the big tree seen in the
center of this figure. Note the green plate “207, 407, 208, 408” on the right extreme side.
Once you are in the aforesaid bus stop, you will be able to see, in front
of you, a school called CEAN and another avenue beside it, perpendicular to
the one where you bus was running. You must cross the latter and follow the
former until its end, then you turn right, then left, go straight ahead and finally
turn right and walk a little more until you see a blue building with a plate with
the following text: “Multiuso II - Centro Internacional de Física da Matéria
Condensada – CIFMC”. That is the place of our meeting! This whole path is
showed in Fig. 6.
