Analysis of Residues and
Contaminants in Food – Lanagros
When dealing with food safety, the control of
residue and contaminants has a fundamental
role. It is through the National Residue and
Contaminants Control Plan – PNCRC that
MAPA ensures that the product which is
delivered to the internal as well as the external
consumer is free of hazardous substances
and contaminants at non-acceptable levels.

The quality and safety of the products
are attested by the analysis performed
in the National Agriculture and Livestock
Laboratories Network, which is composed
by the Lanagros and authorized laboratories.
The Lanagros – National Agriculture and
Livestock Laboratories – are the official
laboratories of MAPA.
The 6 Lanagros are located in the 5 Brazilian
regions, being 2 in the Southeast region
(Pedro Leopoldo/MG and Campinas/SP), 1
in the South region (Porto Alegre/RS), 1 in the
Mid-West (Goiânia/GO), 1 in the Northeast
(Recife/PE) and 1 in the North (Belém/PA).

Each Lanagro acts concentrating more in determined segments,
based on the location and regional production profile, developing
specific scopes, which, when summed, cover the list of monitored
substances and matrices in the PNCRC, together with the scopes of
the authorized laboratories.

Lanagro Network’s Vision is to be recognized as world reference in
agriculture and livestock laboratorial services, capable of providing
responses with readiness, quality and scientific excellence, striving
for innovation, rigor and efficiency in the conduction of its processes.
For this, great investments in capacity building, infrastructure and
quality management tools are necessary.

The Lanagros are equipped in the state of the art in analytical chemistry,
whose techniques are based mainly on liquid and gas chromatography
coupled with mass spectrometry (triple quadrupole and time-of-flight),
gas chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry,
atomic absorption spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma mass
spectrometry, besides microbiological screening methods. The
laboratories staffs are constantly seeking development and innovation
in terms of analytical methodology, aiming to optimize the time of
analysis, capacity, resources and quality.

The work developed by the Lanagros is being presented in large-sized
international congresses and symposia, besides reputable scientific
journals in the analytical chemistry, foodstuffs and agriculture areas.
All the Lanagros analysis methods follow rigorous orientations of validation
and internal quality control, in a way to substantiate the issued results.
The Analytical Validation and Quality Control Guide itself, prepared by
CGAL together with the Lanagros is used with this objective.
Besides the analytical routine and development of new methods,
the Lanagros staffs are constantly involved also in audits to the
authorized laboratories, in order to evaluate the compliance with
MAPA normatives from the technical and procedural point of view,
to ensure that these laboratories keep control of the phases of their
processes satisfactorily and increase the efforts for the continuous
improvement of their analytical competence. They also contribute
effectively in the formulation and review of normatives, technical
manuals and procedures of the areas.
The Lanagros have a Quality Management System running according
to standard ISO/IEC 17025. Lanagros MG, RS and SP are
accredited against this standard by INMETRO and this accreditation
is the demonstration of the competence and reliability of their work,
recognized internationally. The other Lanagros are in advanced
process for obtaining accreditation.
In the Residues and Contaminants in Food Area, the scope of the
Lanagros is divided into the fronts: Vet Drug Residues, Organic
Contaminants, Inorganic Contaminants, Mycotoxins and
Pesticide Residues.

Support
General Coordination - CGAL,
more specifically the Area of
Residues and Contaminants
in Food, is responsible for the
management of the laboratories
which act in the National Residues
and
Contaminants
Control
Plan, the PNCRC. Besides the
authorized laboratories which
also perform analysis for the
National Plan, it is responsibility
of CGAL to manage, allocate
resources and define guidelines
and strategies for the operation
of the LANAGROs. Together with
the LANAGROs staffs, CGAL
established the Procedures
Manual of PNCRC for laboratories
and the Analytical Validation and
Quality Control Guide. CGAL
also has the role of promoting
the publication of articles in
specialized scientific journals
and participation in national and
international congresses and
symposia, to participate in forums
for the formulation of harmonized
methodological guides and
protocols and internationally
recognized, having the mission
of putting Brazil at the forefront
for the analysis of residues and
contaminants in food.

Interlaboratory Program
Lanagro - MG

MAPA’s Interlaboratory Program (IP) is coordinated by
LANAGRO-MG. It periodically conducts rounds of proficiency
assays of which participate the laboratories from the National
Network, official as well as authorized. According to the planning
performed between the IP staff and CGAL, the other Lanagros
will collaborate producing reference materials for the Program,
each on its expertise and on its scope. With this, the network
participates actively in the interlaboratory activities, not only
receiving and analyzing samples, but also producing them
so that the IP conducts the rounds and treat the results with
statistical reasoning.

The participation in proficiency assays programs provides to
the laboratories an objective way of assuring their competence
to perform analysis and guarantee the result that is issued and,
consequently, the conformity of the product or process assessed.
The use of reference materials, in turn, ensures traceability and
is fundamental for method validation, equipments’ performance
verification, efficacy assessment of trainings, among others. This
way the generated data can be used for self-assessment of the
laboratory, for evaluation by the clients, or by other parties, such as
accreditation or regulatory bodies. It supplements, consequently,
the internal procedures of quality control themselves, providing an
additional control for analytical quality assurance.
