WELCOME
WELCOME TO THE
ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC’S
AUTUMN SEASON
This autumn we are excited to welcome a number of
distinguished international guests to work with our talented
musicians. Bernard Haitink returns to lead our Symphony
Orchestra and Chorus in two performances of Ravel’s
Daphnis et Chloé, one of the most spectacular scores to
come from Diaghilev’s famous Ballets Russes commissions.
We are also joined by violinist and conductor Thomas
Zehetmair, who performs with RCM musicians in Mendelssohn’s celebrated
Octet, before conducting Beethoven’s exuberant Symphony no 7.
We explore the music of Beethoven throughout the season, including his Eroica
Symphony, led by our new visiting professor of conducting, Martyn Brabbins,
and Rasumovsky Quartets alongside those of Sir Michael Tippett. New music,
too, features significantly, with works by Colin Matthews, RCM professor Joseph
Horovitz and a tribute to Pierre Boulez.
We host inspirational visits from a range of performers from around the world,
including The Royal Wind Music from Holland, the Berlin Philharmonic Wind
Quintet, members of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and ground-breaking
performers Ensemble Nikel. All will be working with RCM musicians in
addition to their performances – sharing their skills and knowledge with
the next generation.
The centrepiece of our tenth International Festival of Viols is the newly discovered
12 Fantasies for Viol by Telemann, and we also celebrate the double bass in
a new festival. Masterclasses by Dame Gwyneth Jones, Stefan Dohr and Peter
Donohoe and a classical/jazz crossover event from the RCM Big Band add
to a highly entertaining season, rounded off with the young Mozart’s sparkling
opera, La finta giardiniera.
