Gebrüder Weiss GmbH
In 1945, Gebrüder Weiss started to rebuild and during the 1950s, established branches across Austria
and commenced overland transports to Western Europe.
The first documentary mention of the Wizze (Weiss) and Spechler (Spehler) families dates from the
14th century and their involvement in transportation can be traced to 1473 and the foundation of
the Milan messenger service.
Company internationalization began in the 1970s with expansion in the German-speaking area.
Moreover, following the collapse of the Iron Curtain, the 1980s saw branch openings throughout the
CEE region and entry to the Far Eastern market.
This transalpine link continued operations until nationalisation at the beginning of the 19th century and
it was then that three Weiss brothers began trading under the name Gebrüder Weiss. During the remaining
period up to the turbulent decade 1910 – 1920, Gebrüder Weiss kept pace with the growth of rail and
shipping links.
Austria’s accession to the EU in 1995 provided Gebrüder Weiss with fresh opportunities, while the
millennium decade witnessed the creation of the Weiss-Röhlig joint venture, the company’s transition
into a corporation and the initiation of a globalization process that continues to this day.
In the twenties and thirties, the company defied political and economic upheavals and maintained steady
expansion until the difficult 1940s.

In 1852, Carl Röhlig, born and raised in Eisenach, the son of a businessman, seized the opportunity to
set up a tobacco and insurance business in Bremen – the origin of Röhlig & Co.
The 1980s and 1990s also saw dynamic growth and the millennium brought an alliance with Gebrüder Weiss
and a way into emerging markets such as China, India and Brazil. Moreover, the Röhlig network further
expanded to USA, Canada, Taiwan, Japan and Thailand.
Seven years later Carl Röhlig expanded his business by shipping European emigrants’ luggage to the
New World. The family-owned enterprise grew steadily by acquiring new customers around the world.
First branches in Germany were opened and sea freight became Röhlig’s core business.
The future of Röhlig has already begun: With a business strategy and new brand strategy Röhlig is prepared
for upcoming challenges. The vision is clear: Strengthening the core business, deepening the service offer
and developing new-generation business.
In the 1950s and 1960s Röhlig became Germany’s leading international shipping company. In the 1970s
Röhlig reached out to new global destinations and became a trusted air freight forwarder and a logistics
specialist for international turnkey projects.
With the initial two horizons of growth and the development of new-generation business, Röhlig‘s
“Directions 2018” are set.
