About CAFE
The Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions (CAFE) is a non-profit organization
established in 1924 and largely funded by membership fees. We represent Canadian
rural and urban fairs and exhibitions, festivals, rodeos, agricultural societies, provincial
associations, industry service providers, and affiliate associations with a direct interest
in the industry.
We work with members, industry, and government towards building a financially secure
and sustainable industry that directs its resources toward improving and advancing
the economic, social, and cultural life of Canadian communities. CAFE provides
advocacy, programs, services, and leadership to coordinate, unify, and advance the
industry so that it can adapt to changes and build for the future to meet the needs and
priorities of the communities our industry serves.
CAFE has made every effort to provide an accurate report. Please report any errors or

Report from the President
As I write this report to the membership of Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions,
I would start by saying Thank you to everyone involved in CAFE. This has been a year of
change and reorganization.
We started the year by saying Good Bye to Hannah Service who had been our Executive
Director. We also said Good Bye to Kim Chadsey who had been on our staff in the office. So
we went from an office staff of three to one. Under the very capable leadership of Mavis
Hanna, the office staff, CAFE has gone ahead and had a very successful year.
The CAFE Board of Directors has supported the organization to their best and aided Mavis
whenever it was needed. We have had a very thought provoking year as we work through
our strategic planning and look to the future of CAFE. You will hear more at the Convention
as it will be a topic that will be discussed in depth with needed member input.
I am glad to report that the financial picture of CAFE is a much brighter one this year as
we have gone through the year. Again thanks to all members, Directors and staff.
If you have been reading the Canadian Fair News, you would have noticed that I have travelled across much of our great country the last two years visiting many fairs and fairgrounds.
What a great country we live in. All the fairs across Canada have many similarities whether
they are large or small, but they are all proud of their history and what they do for their
community.
At this time, I would like to thank the Members of the Paris Agricultural Society (Paris Fair)
for giving me the opportunity to be a member of Board of Directors of CAFE. Paris is a
smaller fair in Canada but is one that finds membership in CAFE very rewarding. Also I would
like to thank all the other organizations that support CAFE in any capacity.
Remember, CAFE is your organization, so keep us informed or talk to us about whatever
you have on your mind as that is what keeps CAFE growing and going forward.

From the Executive Director
Being in my new position as Executive Director has been a wonderful experience for me. The
office was gone through a streamlining procedure to enable us to move forward developing
stronger strategies and structures to support our Canadian Fair Industry.
I am privileged to work with a Board of Directors whose industry experience and expertise are
utilized for the development of the National office as well as the best interests of all Fairs and Exhibitions. The fair industry is at the forefront of all their decisions. I thank them for their advice,
support and dedication.
Throughout the year, I attended meetings and fairs across Canada. This experience allowed me
the opportunity to develop relationships and networks with Fair supporters across Canada.
Through these networking experiences the CAFE office has developed a bank of resources and
ideas to benefit all Fair and Service members. Please do not hesitate to contact the office if you
need assistance in any areas.
This has been a productive year for CAFE. The CAFE office continues to provide services to our
membership, organize and implement our National Convention in London, Ontario plus serve as
the voice of the Canadian Fair Industry. The 2011 Convention in London will offer more insight into
projects, new ideas and the strategic vision of the organization.
During the 2010-2011 fiscal year, the CAFE organization faced issues with fiscal responsibility.
Through the careful management by the Board and the Executive Director, we were able to successfully overcome these issues while maintaining services and resource levels to the membership.
CAFE has developed a 5 year strategic plan in which key objectives, goals and incentives have
been determined. The Board and the Executive Director will now implement the strategic process
by developing actions and determine achievable time lines. As these programs are rolled out, the
membership will be informed of all successes and challenges.
At the 2010 Convention held in cooperation with the Calgary Stampede a detailed convention
survey was completed. These results will insure that future conventions will maintain the highest
standards of excellence and service to our membership. The results are available on online.
In my position as Executive Director I will continue to work diligently on behalf of the Directors,
the Membership and the Canadian Fair Industry.

Member Resource Centre
The members resource centre is an excellent place to find and share valuable information
that can assist our members with their day-to-day operations.
The on-line resource centre provides impact studies, emergency procedure manuals,
sample rental agreements, and information for entertainers.

Canadian Youth Talent Competition
Contributors and Winners
The twenty first annual Canadian Youth Talent
Competition was held on Friday November 20,
2010 at the Boyce Theatre at the Stampede
Park. Tony Diaz was on hand to represent the
North American Midway Entertainment and
present the winners with cash prizes to further
their musical aspirations. North American Midway Entertainment has been a strong financial
contributor to the CYTC for over five years.
Their continued financial contribution of the
prize monies allows CAFE the financial capacity
to pay for the actual production. The combined
contributions from individuals such as Bill Sumner and North America Midway Entertainment
corporate support enables CAFE to continue to
support talented youth that come through our
Canadian fairs and exhibitions to compete in the
CYTC national competition.
The winners for 2010 were: Lena Bureau, from
the Quebec region took first place. Meg Contini,
from the Alberta South region placed second
while Dylan Hayden, from the Toronto region
placed third.
• 1996 participant Michael Bublé released his
album BaBalu in 2003 and his international
hit album It’s Time in 2005.
• Two CYTC graduates can be seen dancing
in the Hollywood mega-hit movie Chicago,
including 1999 CYTC participant Julius
Sermonia and Mr. Dance America 2002
Blake McGrath.
• Fans of professional dance will have seen
Julius Sermonia perform on Broadway and as
Mistoffelees in New York production of Cats.
• Stephanie Cadman, the 1998 Solo Female
World Tap Dance Champion, has performed in
Bowfire and in professional musical theatre.
• Chad Klinger, 1998 CYTC participant, had two
top 20 country hits by age 21.
Participants are assessed on their natural ability,
quality of performance, stage presence, and audience rapport. They are judged by professionals
from the performing arts industry. The top three
contestants receive a financial prize and all contestants receive a commemorative medallion in
recognition of their excellence.
• Matthew-Aaron Dusk has released two jazz
CDs and performed on the TV show The
Casino since participating in the CYTC in 1999.
Over the years the CYTC has featured a variety
of performances from self-composed drum
solos, to musical comedy, to group dance, and
more. Check out some of the success stories:
• Giovanni Amenta shines on all 3 of his CDs,
which include moving Italian and English
songs.
• Canadian Idol finalist Craig Sharpe competed
at the CYTC in 2003 and Jenny Gear who
finished in the top ten of Canadian Idol was
a CYTC participant in 1999.

• 2001 CYTC 3rd place winner Samantha King
released her first album in 2002 and is
regularly featured in Country Music News
magazine.
• Bass-baritone Justin Welsh is featured on the
CD-release of Edward Elger’s The Dream of
Gerontius.
• “Diva-in-the-making” Tiffany Deriveau
performed in the musical Mamma Mia and
recently released a solo CD.

BEST OF SHOW AWARDS
The Best of Show Award recognizes a new event,
program, concept, or technique introduced to
the public and/or improved methods of operation, adaptability, activity and success compared
to plans and budgets. The Best of Show can relate to any program, activity or service provided
at any time during the year. It is not restricted
to fair time only. All large, medium and small
fairs who are members in good standing of CAFE
are eligible for this award. One award was given
in each size category.

Visual Advertising Campaign ! The main challenge of the visual advertising campaign for
2010 was to come up with a new image.

good” and maintaining excellent presentation.

The Roll of Honour Award presented to
Mr. Rey Wosar. For almost 30 years, Rey
Wosar held a number of progressively senior
management positions within Northlands.
Over the course of his career, Rey cultivated
expertise across a wide spectrum of business
practices including exhibition and event management, capital development and procurement, facility sales and operations, and
municipal development planning. This knowledge profile earned him a solid reputation
amongst his
peers throughout
Alberta and
across Canada.
