The Mobile World Congress
With Catalan flair: the Government of Catalonia promotes the
participation of 55 Catalan firms and 5 technology centres
For the eleventh year running, Catalonia is hosting the Mobile World Congress
(MWC), the worldwide benchmark event on mobile communication. It is being
held on February 22 – 25, at the Fira Gran Via facilities in L’Hospitalet, Barcelona.
Organised by the GSMA — the international organisation that brings together
mobile communication operators — this year’s event is celebrated under the title
“Mobile is everything”, and is attended by the sector’s leading companies. The
organisers expect to house about 2,000 exhibitors and outdo the figure of 95,000
professional visitors who attended last year’s event.
Once again the Government of Catalonia gives its support to Catalan companies, giving them a significant presence in the Mobile World Congress.
Part of the attention of this global event will also be focused on the Montjuïc Trade
Fair area, where, for the third consecutive year 4 Years from Now (4YFN) event
will be held, aimed at entrepreneurs, start-ups, incubators and investors from the
mobile sector.
This year the Mobile World Congress is forecasted to bring a direct financial return
to the city of Barcelona and its metropolitan area of some €460M. The Congress
is also expected to create over 13,000 temporary jobs.
As is the norm, this year’s MWC conference programme includes major names
from the most important firms in the mobile sector, such as the President of
Qualcomm Incorporated, Derek Aberle, the President and CEO of the Ford
Motor Company, Mark Fields, the CEO of Getty Images, Dawn Airey and the
CEO of the Intel Corporation, Brian Krzanich.
Furthermore, the congress will feature a conference given by Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, who is attending the event for the third time in a row, and will
also be attended by the Formula 1 pilot, Lewis Hamilton, who will explain how
wireless technology is changing the automotive world.
Therefore, this year’s edition will see the participation of 55 Catalan firms and 5
technology centres or research institutes selected by both ACCIÓ, the Agency
for Business Competitiveness — affiliated to the Department for Business and
Knowledge — and the Directorate General for Telecommunications and Information — affiliated to the Department of the Presidency — thanks to their international vision and clearly innovative profile.
The companies and technology centres are located in two different areas within
the Congress:
1. Catalonia Stand (CS50): The Catalan pavilion hosts 44 Catalan companies
and organizations that will present their products and services to the professionals attending the event. This space will also host the technological meetings
between companies known as the Brokerage Event.
In addition, the Catalonia Stand will designate an area to host a group of ICT
companies from United States (PopVox, Locomizer, Zentri and Mark/Space).
This is thanks to the collaboration agreement between the Governments of
Catalonia and California.
2. App Planet (8.1K48): 16 Catalan companies and technology centres will
be hosted at the area of the Government of Catalonia at App Planet, dedicated
to the development of mobile telephone apps and telecommunications.
Throughout these 11 editions of the Mobile World Congress the
Government of Catalonia has fostered the participation of 368
Catalan companies.

The ICT sector in Catalonia
The information and communications technology sector (ICT) employs 84,600
workers in Catalonia, a figure representing about 2.7% of the working C
atalan
population, according to data from the Economically Active Population Survey
(EPA, in Spanish) for the third quarter of 2015. This area includes activities belonging both to the industrial sector (component manufacture, equipment, computers, etc.) and services (programme edition, telecommunications, data processing, equipment repair, etc.).
The ICT sector has established itself as a generator of employment over recent
years, a fact that turns it into an area of activity with greater economic and social
perspectives. Unemployment rates decreased 0.8% in 2015 and average 5.2%.
As the figures show, ICT is one of Catalonia’s most dynamic economic sectors.
With over 12,800 companies (a figure representing almost 2% of all Catalan
companies), over €14,000M of annual turnover and over 200 m
illion euros spent
annually on R+D, it is a driving growth force that generates wealth and quality
job creation. The sector concentrates 70% of its activity within the Barcelona
area.
ICT’s subsector of mobility is showing solid growth, specifically from those companies developing mobile solutions. This is a phenomenon that has undoubtedly
been reinforced by public policies that have pushed the creation of a powerful
technological sector in Catalonia and especially thanks to the adjudication in
2011 of Barcelona as Mobile World Capital over the period between 2012
and 2023, a position that places both the city and Catalonia right in the global
centre of mobile communications.
Along these lines, Barcelona has an ecosystem of entrepreneurs and start-ups in
the digital sphere, with a large number of companies, training organisations, accelerators and investors. As can be seen in the study “Digital Start-up Ecosystem
Overview 2015” recently presented by the Barcelona Mobile World Capital
Foundation, this ecosystem is made up of 680 companies that represent 26% of

the total on a state level. In 2015 the main companies of this ecosystem received
investments to the tune of €264M. Mobile start-ups, with 12.8% of the total market, are the second most common, after ecommerce start-ups.
Furthermore, its role as world mobile capital has encouraged Barcelona and Catalonia to develop innovative projects in this area; such as the mHealth programme
which defines health practices that can be performed via mobile devices, such as
the access to personal health files or the tracking of patients with chronic illnesses; or the mTalent programme which in recent years has performed over 600
training and work orientation activities in the area of mobile technology with over
8,000 people have taken part.
The mSchools programme is also worthy of special mention. It helps students
and teachers integrate mobile technologies effectively into the classroom. Mobile
technology enables access to updated material, improves collaboration and reinforces student dedication; something which opens up new teaching and learning
routes that improve performance and employability. Within the framework of this
programme, in this school year over 18,000 students from over 900 Catalan
schools worked on the subject “Mobilise technology”, an initiative which supports teacher training, actions aimed at furthering computer programming and
robotics in schools and to the call of entry to the Mobile Learning Awards and
App Awards, among others.
All these programmes have been coordinated by both the Catalan Government
and the Barcelona City Council with the collaboration and under the umbrella of
the Barcelona Mobile World Capital Foundation. This Foundation goals are
to also make traditional firms innovate and access new markets — thanks to
mobile technologies and the new business opportunities they generate — so that
both technological companies and traditional industry together can evolve and
create an area of differential know-how in Catalonia.

Brokerage Event: find your tech partner
The Catalonia Stand is once again the setting for the Brokerage Event, the event
that hosts the international meetings between the mobile communication tech
companies. The Brokerage Event is organized by ACCIÓ as coordinator in
Catalonia of the European Commission’s Enterprise Europe Network (EEN), a
network bringing together 600 organizations from over 50 countries.
The Brokerage Event consists of 25-minute and pre-arranged bilateral interviews aimed at making international contacts and finding possible partners to
develop innovative projects by means of future international cooperation agreements; for example, trade agreements, licence distribution, joint ventures, subcontracting, technology transfer or collaborative R+D.
Registered companies can consult the profiles of other participants, to see if their
offers and demands are in line with their interests, and request interviews via the
event’s web page. Last year over 400 companies from 30 countries held 1,400
meetings. This year the goal is to increase the number of participating companies
and thus increase the number of meetings.
