introduction
At 42 years of age, Hideo Matsushita, the founder of Audio-Technica and
current chairman of the board left his position leading the Bridgestone
Museum of Art in Tokyo where he staged a number of successful LP
listening concerts.
The year was 1962. A revolution in sound technology was on the brink of
taking place that would have made Thomas Edison both proud and envious.
When Mr Matsushita first opened the doors, in what he described as a onestorey ’barracks’ in Tokyo’s Shinjuku-ku, Audio-Technica’s first home, he
may or may not have been aware of the incredible opportunities that lay
ahead all around the world. That the bourgeoning youth culture of the time
would, in many ways, eventually become key to the development and
success of Audio-Technica for its cartridges, headphones and microphones.

One of the three inaugural models of dynamic headphones
introduced in 1974 to which Audio-Technica devoted all its skills to
some 35 years ago.

From the humble beginnings of my father some 47 years ago, Audio-Technica
grew to become a leading manufacturer of phonograph cartridges,
producing at one stage half the world’s cartridges. It was an era when such
cartridges were a symbol of technological expertise for audio manufacturers
– as cartridges were essential for reproducing sounds from analogue
records. At this time, we were also a leading producer of tone arms which
were used to support the cartridges. We started to develop headphones
in the early 1970s, when the demand for the components was so rapid
that it grew on a daily basis. This was an important symbiosis, and we were
proud of being able to produce high quality headphones using our precision
technology. As both headphones and cartridges are both audio transducers,
our aim was not only to make the world’s best cartridges, but also the best
headphones. In 1974, three models of the inaugural AT-700 series were
born. These models represent the origin of our headphones, which has
led us to today’s ATH series you see here, in this catalogue. Since the
introduction of our first headphone 35 years ago, Audio-Technica
headphones have developed consistently and continuously to compete
with the world’s best, in terms of design, technical achievement and quality.

high-fidelity
open back and closed back headphones
Hi-Fi headphones fall into two basic categories.
One is the open-back headphone, which is designed to allow the passage
of air between the ears and the headphones. This design gives a character
to the sound that is often described as being very natural, however one
disadvantage of the open back design is that the sound is able to leak
out making it audible to those around you.
The other is the closed-back type, in which the structure is enclosed to
prevent air leaking out. These headphones are designed to reduce the
effect of external noise on your listening and also to keep the sound made
by the headphone from disturbing those around you.
However some types incorporate features of both and it’s difficult to clearly
categorise them. The design of the driver units differs from model to
model, to provide differing qualities of acoustics and comfort.
Looking back at our history, we can see that the popularity of the types
has changed from era to era. In the 1980s, open-backed types were
more mainstream, whilst recent years have favoured closed-back.
Now, yet again, more people are choosing open-back models.

AD700

Compact noise-cancellation for use on-the-go.
ANC3
The ANC3 uses patented technology that detects external
environmental noise through miniature microphones which are
incorporated into each ear bud, and then creates an equal but
opposite noise signal which is added to the music signal and so
cancels out up to 85% of the external noise.
The ANC3 in-ear headphones are perfect for use on airplanes and
trains, or whilst exercising or anywhere you want to listen to music
- and just the music. Offering total comfort and convenience, the
ANC3 comes with three sizes of ear tips (small, medium and large)
to give a totally customised fit in the ear canal. The ANC3 includes
a compact control unit with a monitor switch that mutes all functions,
