ZdravetsSOCIETY - Canadian Macedonian Place
As you already know, we are renovating our
suites. To name one of our suites in honour
of a loved one you simply have to make a
donation of $5,000 or more. It is a great way
to honour a family member or loved one this
holiday season and the proceeds will be put to
use right away at the home, providing the best
programs, services and facilities to our seniors.

It’s true, our tournament will be

June. It will be held at the Cardinal
Golf Club on Wednesday July 10, 2013.
As I write this letter, I think back to
how many letters I’ve written as the
President of Canadian Macedonian
Place. The calendar suggests I have
been honored to serve as President
for over four years, but CMP has
been an important part of my life
for much longer.

As a teenager, my parents were
involved in all things concerning
the still unfinished Home and
at that time and I was part of the Canadian Macedonian
Youth Association. Thinking back to those days, I realize
that several people who were also part of the CMP Youth
group are close friends of mine today. People I would not
have otherwise met and several of our Board were Youth
members and like me, their involvement during their early
years has translated into a lifetime commitment.
Marilyn Trentos
Although I struggle with the message every time I sit to
write this letter, one thing is certain, CMP is and always has
been an important part of my life and continues to serve as
something that all Macedonians around the world can be
proud of.
Commemorating a loved one through a donation to Canadian
Macedonian Place is a wonderful way to make a lasting tribute.
By using the enclosed reply coupon and postage-paid envelope,
you can easily make a tax-deductible gift to CMP in honour, or in
memory of a loved one. Your gift will be recognized in the next
issue of the Zdravets and the honouree(s) or next of kin will be
notified of your generous gift with a special card.

So what’s new at the Home? This summer we celebrated
the 70th Anniversary of the Canadian Macedonian Open
golf tournament. Although this tournament was started
long before the Home was even conceptualized, for the
past 20 years all the proceeds earned have been donated
to Canadian Macedonian Place. In addition, the Canadian
Macedonian Open has become CMP’s single most important
annual fund raising source. This year was our best event
yet. Not only measured by the funds raised for the Home,
but also for the pride, entertainment, perfect weather
Inside:
• Macedonian open raises over $XX,XXX
• Canadian pop star interviews NHL stars
• CMP 2012 Accomplishments
and Macedonian feast which all combined to make for an
outstanding sold out event. This year’s most memorable
moments included a singing performance by our very
own Aleesia Stamkos followed by surprise interviews
that she was a part of along with a pair of star CanadianMacedonian athletes -- Michael Angelides and Steven
Stamkos. Although Aleesia’s interview is transcribed in part
in the pages that follow, the professionalism and maturity
of this extremely talented and beautiful young lady from
Armensko can only be imagined. I’m sure everyone there
remembers Aleesia singing our National Anthem followed
by her hit song, XXX??. It was truly magical.
As for the Home, it continues to be transformed and
updated. The Board is pleased to report that the old elevator
has been replaced with a new, faster, safer model. All entry
locks, including those to each apartment, have been replaced
with more secure technology and we continue to renovate
the suites, five at a time and have now completed 36 of 109
units. The Board’s goal is to complete the renovation of all
units before 2020. All of the aforementioned repairs updates
and enhancements are necessary and expensive and as such,
the continued generosity and support of the Macedonian
community is vital to the long term well being of CMP.
On the topic of support, we have experienced an incredible
year of generosity from our donors. The year began with
a beautiful (and for my family, heartfelt) letter sent to the
Home by Mr. John Bitove, Sr., naming a suite in honour
of his dear friend, Mr. Jimmy Trentos. The Bitove family
followed with two more very generous donations naming
con’t on inside
This past June, we celebrated the 70th Canadian Macedonian Open Golf Tournament. It’s hard to believe
that our tournament has been around for 70 years! This year, you helped us to raise $XX,XXX!!! A very
special thank you to all of our generous sponsors and particiants. We would also like to thank all of our hole
sponsors, gift bag, raffle and golf prizes.
Originally started as a way to get the community together and raise money for the Canadian Red Cross,
today our tournament raises much needed funds for programs and services for our community. The net
proceeds from our golf tournament are an important source of revenue for Canadian Macedonian Place and
the programs that we support including the Macedonian Language Program at the University of Toronto
and the Macedonian Film Festival.
In honour of our 70th we had a very special guest, Aleesia Stamkos who performed the Canadian national
anthem and sang her latest hit. She also interviewed NHL superstars Steven Stamkos and Mike XXX.
You can read all about on page X.
You can also read more about the developments and programs at the home the tournament supports on

CANADIAN POP STAR INTERVIEWS NHL RISING STARS
At this year’s Macedonian Open Golf tournament
Canadian Pop Star/Singer Aleesia Stamkos
interviewed two of the NHL’s rising stars Michael
Angelidis and Steven Stamkos both with the Tampa
Bay Lightening.
Aleesia Stamkos: Steven you just came off an
amazing season with Tampa Bay and you are the
leading goal scorer of the NHL for the second time.
How does that feel?
Steven Stamkos: It’s surreal just hearing you say
that. As a kid you dream of playing in the NHL, you
don’t dream of leading the league in goals. But I’ve
been very fortunate to play with good players and
have a couple bounces go my way. I’m very fortunate
and very excited about the future.
AS: Not only Macedonian fans, fans everywhere
wear Stamkos on the back of their jerseys. That must
feel overwhelming. How do you stay at the top of
your game?
SS: It’s amazing. You see little kids that look up to
you. That motivates you in itself. But like I said, you
work as hard as you can to achieve all the personal
goals you set when you’re younger and when you get
to that level you realize how hard you have to work
just to stay there. That was something that was an
eye opener for me when I first got to the NHL. I just
try to work extremely hard and achieve the results.
AS: Here on my left is Michael Angelidis. Just a few
weeks ago you led the Norfolk Admirals to winning
the Calder Cup. Congratulations. As the captain of
the team, how was that experience?
Michael Angelidis: It was great. It was a privilege to
be the captain especially winning at home with all of
the Macedonians there cheering me on. I had 200 to
300 relatives so it was a great accomplishment and I
was happy that it was in Toronto.
AS: Michael, you played and trained in Unionville
too and you got called up to play with Steven in
Tampa. How was that?
MA: It was awesome...a dream come true. I finally
got to where I’ve always wanted to be and play
with another Macedonian and you know growing
up with him. It was a great feeling. I think a lot of
Macedonians and our families were proud to see
two guys out there from Armensko. It was a great
accomplishment. It felt good.
AS: All of us are from Armensko. Do you guys have
any downtime this summer?
SS: You have to train extremely hard in the summer.
So I’ve been doing that, been playing some golf.
Excited to be here at the Macedonian Open. Just
working hard and looking forward to next season.
AS: And how
about you
Michael?
MA: Training
for next year. So
I’m excited to see
what happens.
AS: Let’s finish
off with...We
are proud to be
Macedonians!

The President’s
Message Continued
two additional suites in honour of loved
ones. The Niczowski family is naming
two suites; Phil and Donna Evans have
named a suite and the Stanwyck family
is naming a suite as well. For $5000 per
suite, theses generous and supportive
families have provided a lasting tribute
to a loved one as well as much needed
support to ensure the renovations
continue, and the wellbeing of CMP is
sustained. We now have seven suites
named with over 100 more open for your
own generous and lasting tribute.
On a personal note, I have never been
more proud to be Macedonian and I am
grateful for my parent’s involvement in
this community which today provides a
huge aspect of happiness in my life. My
husband and our children feel ever more
pride in being Macedonian with each
event we participate in, especially when
we see the talent and pride amongst
fellow Macedonians. I believe that having
a connection to our community is the best
thing you can do for your children. So
my message for this issue is: get involved
and stay connected.
