The causes for it are as many as you have people involved with you – students, volunteer leaders, parents, school personnel, church bosses , and the like. So, the more people – the more “drama.” Every once and a while, a “drama” goes spinning out of control. People are talking to each other about each other, secret meetings are held, and poison-penned anonymous letters are sent. That’s when a “drama” becomes a “crisis.” How you handle crisis will influence significantly your tenure in that ministry or church. We hope this “crisis” themed issue of Youth Leaders Only will assist you when a “drama” goes spinning out of control. There are other ways that crisis strikes a youth ministry. Although we probably don’t think so, we can inadvertently create our own crisis. Longtime San Diego youth leader and youth ministry guru, E. G. Von Trutzschler (everyone calls him “Von”) has spelled out twenty-five ways that we can create our own crisis. Chec k out what he has to say! We know that there is no way that we can adequately cover such an important topic in a magazine like this one, and yet the articles we’ve included might be an encouragement to you, and a good place to turn to when things go spinning out of control. There are far more resources included in this magazine than the crisisthemed articles. Check out the behind-the-scenes interviews with Jeff Foxworthy (the host of the American Bible Challenge television game show), the band RED, Jeremy Camp, and newcomers Everfound. You’ll want to use the music-based Bible studies built around a song from each album in the YLO box. Youth leaders just like you have create d these complete meeting guides to help you use music as a “hook” to teach God’s Word to teenagers. Similarly, we have included several re:Tunes –discussion guides that bring a Biblical critique to secular songs that kids know. There is so much more here that you can use to be effective in your ministry with teenagers –chord-charts to the best worship songs from the albums in this edition of YLO, and a thematic listing of every song on all the albums in this box, to name just two. So go ahead, explore all the powerful resources that you are holding in your hands. Maybe this magazine will help you keep your dramas from spinning out of control! Godspeed, Ken McCoy Editor TRD << HOw to use Page 5 How to Use this YLO Music Resource Book Sure, at first glance you notice how great it looks—very current, very stylish. Go ahead—flip through this book a bit. Notice the helpful design? Did you catch the organizational details? The more you look at this book, the more you will appreciate the functionality that has been built into it. Here is a quick tour… The Cover If you’re like most of us, you keep your YLO (Youth Leaders Only) books stored on a bookshelf. When you want to search for a song or video that deals with a certain topic, slide each book out a couple of inches and read the themes and featured articles for each issue. Cool! The Index Take a look at the index or “table of contents”—notice the colored bars? They represent sections in the book and they clue you in on which albums / Bible Studies are “Main,”“Mild,”or “Hot.” You will notice in the Bible Studies section that each Leader Guide / Student Guide is color-keyed the same way. Wow! Someone’s been thinking! Featured Articles Each issue of YLO has a certain “flavor.” Around that theme are a couple of “Feature Articles” as well as some of the other items you have in your YLO box. These articles give you insight into the heart and ministry of some of the musicians included in the YLO box. Bible Studies What makes Youth Leaders Only more than “cheap music” are the musicbased Bible Study resources provided for you to use in your programming. Finding good Christian music isn’t hard, but coming up with ways to use it in your ministry with teenagers takes time, talent, and energy. Real-world youth leaders write the Bible Studies; the sessions are field-te sted and proven effective with real-world teenagers. Thematic Listing Not every song on every CD has a Bible Study written for it. That doesn’t mean you can’t use those other songs in your ministry with students. Modern Worship Section In this section you’ll find encouraging and enlightening resources to help you develop your youth’s worship ministry. You’ll find articles from recent SPIN versions of YLO or other worship leaders and Lead Sheets of songs from some of the CDs in this YLO. Although they are not really the kind of Lead Sheets most bands use, these pages of “lyrics with chords over them” are a great help when you want to teach the high school praise banda new tune. Many youth leaders tell us that the Lead Sheets are an invaluable resource. re:Tuned Take advantage of some popular secular songs to introduce a theme, supplement your regula Bible Study lesson, or outreach event. Use the opening questions and discussion ideas to get your students talking and thinking about the theme. Reviews Not every available contemporary Christian music CD can make it into the YLO box. So, we try to give you a taste of what else is available in your local store. Since interlínc often gets “pre-release” copies of upcoming CDs, we can give you a “heads up” to new releases that might be just right for you and your young friends. We hope this effort helps you reach and disciple more young people to be go-for-it Christians! Page 6 TRD >> 25 Ways To CREATE YOUR OWN CRISIS FEATURE ARTICLE 25 WAYS TO CREATE A CR I S I © 2013, INTERLíNC. INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM / 800.725.3300 Building a successful youth ministry isn’t easy. Success requires working hard and using your head. There is no sense in compounding the effort by shooting yourself in the foot, or worse. Here are 25 ways that a youth leader can create a crisis. Avoid them at all costs! 1. Assuming: Don’t assume that things will work as planned. Planning without considering possible problems is foolish. Always have a back up plan and an alternate direction. You look bad when “unforeseen conditions” strip you of your leadership. Murphy’s Law (“If something can go wrong, it will”) can catch you, but O’Reilly’s Law is worse: “Murphy was an optimist!” 2. Public Put-Downs: You win no popularity points by putting down a kid or small group in public or from the platform – even if they deserve it. The sympathy of the group will invariably go with the target of the put down. 3. Blowing a Confidence: When you share information given you in confidence, you quickly lose respect from the embarrassed individual and ulti mately from the whole group. Your integrity and credibility are shot! Reading private notes or correspondence publicly, no matter how funny it seems, will backfire every time. Here’s what you do if the teen is going to tell you something very confidential and asks you to promise never to tell. Before he reveals his information say, “Of course I won’t betray your confidence. However, if it is somet hing too big for us to handle, you will have to trust my love for you and my wisdom to do what I feel necessary for your own good or the good of the others involved. You have to give me that liberty.” 4. Putting Down Parents or Family: Blood is truly thicker than water. You can’t win siding with a kid as he complains about his parents or family. Better to reinforce his gut level feeling that his famil y is concerned about him and that they want to trust him and love him. 5. Losing Your Temper: Blowing up in front of your group or with one or more of your youth does irreparable harm to your integrity and right to leadership. You can’t undo a scene like that! Never blow your cool! Your kids may forgive you, but they will never forget the occasion. 6. Blaming: Think and get the facts right before you l ay any blame on anyone. We aren’t called to be detectives. First, take time to cool off. Then realize that, as the leader, you may have to accept the blame – deserved or not. Deal with the responsible party/parties later and privately. By EG von Trutzschler Spectrum Ministries San Diego, California [email protected] S TRD << 25 Ways To CREATE YOUR OWN CRISIS 7. Punishing: Never punish the “whole” for the actions of the “few” in the hope that peer pressure will correct the “guilty” party. The group will see this as very unfair! If pushed, this can unite them against you. Deal with “problem” kids as individuals. Act promptly and privately. 8. Not Backing Your Staff: Never let your staff take some blame that you “mutually” share. Never cut down your staff individually or collectively. Never ever cut them down publicly! Your lack of support will dishearten them, make them indecisive, cause some or all to quit, or galvanize them against you. Far better for you to take the responsibility, deserved or undeserved. 9. Failing to admit you’re wrong: No leader can afford the luxury of covering up his pride. A private mistake demands a private apology; a public mistake demands a public apology. The longer you wait to apologize, the more you lose. 10. Being Tardy: Being late or absent to your own activities and programs gives a clear signal to your group of staff and teens that you yourself aren’t interested in that program or that you’re not really interested in them. Be present, prepared, and early to your activities. 11. Implementing the Wrong Idea: Implementing another man’s program, idea, or formula in your group can be disastrous. Because it worked great for him does not mean it will work for you and your group. Go slow. 12. Being a “Buddy”: Acting like a kid instead of an adult cancels your leadership. Reducing yourself to your group’s maturity level to gain their acceptance will be at the expense of their respect and your authority. Kids want you to be what you are, a responsible mature leader. Invariably, a “buddy” or “good guy” cannot discipline and control his group. No effective youth man can afford to “kick back” with his youth group. 13. Pushing Kids: Being a “boss” or a “mom” or, worse, a “sergeant” by forcing, obligating, and sometimes intimidating your kids into doing wh at you want or what they don’t feel they can do, aren’t equipped to do, or flat out don’t want to do, will at best get half-hearted results, result in a noshow or force a confrontation! A good youth worker knows there are other ways of motivating kids. 14. Being Invisible: It seems few ever think of this subtle way to be bumped from ministry. Your church or supporting agency must know what you are d oing and be convinced of its value. Youth ministry isn’t seen by the congregation or the elders/deacons and many times even by the pastor. Youth work is during the week, and often takes place away from the church. You work with many kids whose parents aren’t in the church. Take advantage of your monthly church paper and place colorful reports and photos of your youth program and activities. In sta ff meetings bring the pastor(s) up-to-date on the youth ministry. Communicate your passion and progress with your deacons and elders. Communication isn’t an option; it’s essential to present a visible and productive youth program to your church and/or your supporters. To maintain support and silence critics, communicate! Page 7 15. Borrowing Money: Borrowing budgeted money for personal use or using church/ organizational equipment for your personal use is very foolish. Nothing good can come of this. 16. Running an Independent Program: Drawing your youth away from your parent organization, teaching a different doctrine, or philosophy, or becoming your own identity will ultimately result in your dismissal. 17. Neglecting Key Kids: Neglecting the children of your pastor, deacons or the politically influential will have trouble brewing in no time. Parents believe everything their kids tell them about the youth program – good or bad, right, or wrong. If the “key” kids are dissatisfied with you and/or the program, you’re out! 18. Ignoring the Writing on the Wall: Failure to read “trouble signs” and to correct potential problems in time sets you up for a future crash that can be fatal to your ministry. Little signals and hints from key church leadership should be seriously considered. 19. Inflating: Don’t get caught in the deadly cycle of “bigger and better” programs, speakers, videos, and fun activities. Trying to outdo yourself can exhaust even the best youth worker to say nothing of his budget. Since what attracts your kids to your program will keep them in your program, make sure you attract kids by u sing ministry events of true value. 20. Using a Show of Hands: Having your kids raise their hands to indicate how many will come to an activity can kill your activity right there! If the wrong people raise their hands or if people are slow to raise their hands, you are dead! Instead, have a person who is going to the activity give the announcement about it. 21. Canceling Your Meeting: Don’t cancel! Find it hard to cancel! Canceling gives the wrong signal! 22. Reckless Driving: Driving recklessly can kill you (and others). Remember the other side of hot driving; your kids will tell their folks how you drive, and kids exaggerate! And parents always believe their kids! Always be safe and responsible in all areas of your program, even if the kids plead otherwise! To be respected is better than being popula r. 23. Having Favorites: Hanging out and working with your favorites can backfire, especially if your favorites aren’t the “influential” kids of the church. 24. Seeing Girls Alone: If you’re a guy, never be alone in a closed room (or area) with a girl or even two! Doing so looks bad and can end in disaster! Be cautious. Falling for one of the kids in your youth program will cancel your ministry in shor t order. 25. Going for Compliant Kids: Going after easy, nice, obedient “ho-hum” kids may seem the best course – but take another look. Leader material is anything but compliant. Future “movers and shakers” move and shake and often at your expense! In most cases, those called troublemakers will be your best future leaders! Go after leaders or you will end up with nothing but a weekly group of non-comm itted attendees! Note: “Von” is youth pastor emeritus for Clairemont Emmanuel Baptist Church in San Diego – he’s a genuine Indiana Jones explorer-evangelist and the director of Spectrum Ministries, which works with the desperately poor in Mexico’s border towns. He is a popular speaker at camps and mission conferences. He’s also something like 80 years old – and still involved in youth ministry! If you want a role model for lifelong youth ministry, Von’s your man. © 2013, INTERLíNC. INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM / 800.725.3300 TRD WHEN VOLUNTEERS DATE KIDS << I pick up the phone, glad to hear that it’s John, a pastor friend of mine from one of the local churches I support. After the usual catch up about family and life, he gets to the point of his call, which is a lot more serious than our normal conversations. I can hear in his voice he is a little tentative when bringing up the situation. Judy, the church’s gap-year (or intern) youth leader has started to date one of the kids in the group. Apparently, they are very much in love; and, apparently, the relationship has been going on for a while. It only came to light when one of the other youth leaders on the team raised some questions about how much time Judy and this boy were spending together. Other leaders had also noticed that that Judy always picked this boy to do things in the sessions over and above other members of the group. My friend John was a little unsure what to do. Judy is 18, and the kid is 17. Other church kids of similar ages are dating, and no one has a problem. He was surprised he hadn’t noticed this going on before, but as a busy pastor he had trusted Judy with the youth ministry and thought she knew the boundaries of the role. I could hear the disappointment in his voice. As he asks the next question, I think he already knows the answer. But he asks it anyway: Should he treat this relationship differently because Judy is a youth leader, or should he just let it go like other relationships in the youth group? The Bigger Issue One of the causes stems from the way we train youth leaders. We are usually good at training people about typical leadership tasks, but we don’t talk much about the costs of leadership. When we accept the call to lead God’s people, certain parts of our lives are not our own anymore. Certain life decisions have to be taken wearing a leadership hat, not just a personal one. This is one of the harsh realities of being in Christian ministry—and especially youth ministry. Rarely do I meet young leaders who are aware of this. They are typically caught up in the passion of doing the work today rather than the difficult sacrifices necessary to sustain it for the long haul. Was it Judy’s fault that she crossed the boundary of leadership and child protection and became romantically involved with a kid in the group? Or was it the church’s fault for not telling her this situation should never have happened in the first place, however normal it may seem amongst her friends? Leadership comes at a cost. Our ministries are going to test us at times. Certain young people in our groups may become attractive to us, seeming to offer us things our current relationships don’t. When this occurs, we need to stand firm in our faith and make sure we act appropriately. We might be flattered by the attention we receive, but we should flee from such thoughts and actions quickly and without hesitation. We should be aware that we have to make decisions as youth ministers that affect our lives outside of our ministries. How I Responded As I listened to John, I knew that some of the questions I was about to ask him were going to strain our friendship. They are the same questions that I would ask any youth minister who came with the situation of a volunteer who was starting to date a kid: • Has anyone ever told the leader that this is wrong or shouldn’t happen? • Has the leader ever been through Safe Sanctuaries or other child protection training? • What other training was given to the leader before starting the role? • Has the leader’s role been specifically spelled out in some type of agreement? • Have the leader been taught about the personal cost and sacrifice that leadership entails? These can be hard questions, especially as they can reach into and question deeply the Pastor’s role in setting up the youth leader’s job. John explained that he assumed Judy knew what the boundaries were and that she had undertaken youth ministry training prior to being approved as a leader. The assumptions made by John are commonplace, unfortunately. Not many people spell out the expectations of what is appropriate and what is not, and what it means to take on a leadership role in the church. Over the past decade in the United Kingdom, we have seen a move to start recruiting volunteers in a similar way to full-time youth ministry workers and clearly spelling out what is expected of them. If John had done this with Judy, she would have known what was appropriate—and that the relationship she had started with the kid in the group was not and never would be. I explained to John that if this were in a school, Judy were a young teacher, and she were having a relationship with a pupil, we wouldn’t be having a conversation like this. It’s not just full-timers or gappers, but volunteers, as well; we need to clearly state what the boundaries are. If the youth leaders are not happy Page 9 with these terms, they need to step down from their roles. Judy was left to make a hard decision: should she end the relationship with the kid in the group or step down from her position? If she steps down and wants to continue her youth ministry career she would have to answer questions about why she stepped down from her position for many years to come. Her explanation would likely create doubt around her ministry, and she would be open to serious questions. What I Would Do Differently A few months later, John called me again to update me on the situation. The church had reviewed all their volunteer agreements in their youth and children’s ministry. They had made sure that everyone was well aware of their roles and responsibilities and what was appropriate behavior. They had made sure all the leaders participated in child protection training and that any young leaders were being trained in an appropriate way so that this type of situation wouldn’t happen again. Judy decided that her long-term calling was to youth ministry, so she ended the relationship and sought out appropriate training. The cost to her leadership was that she had to separate herself from the kid she was dating, stand apart from her peers in the church, and recognize that God’s calling on her life was more important than her relationship with another person. She accepted the cost of Christian leadership. Questions to Consider • Have I considered the costs of Christian leader ship? What boundaries do I tend to push that need to be solidified? • In what creative ways can I help train others regarding appropriate boundaries beyond a list of dos and don’ts? • What barriers stand between clear communica tion of expectations and boundaries to all leaders—both paid and volunteer, regardless of age—and how can I overcome them those barriers? When helping families deal with the loss of loved ones, the #1 thing I tell them is, “There’s no wrong way to grieve.” That’s also true with any other crisis. We are each uniquely wired, and we each deal with pain differently. People need to be given permission to grieve according to who they are. Because the heart and the head disconnect during a crisis, our role is to whisper the truth that people need to hear. Feelings are natural and need to be expressed, but we have to think through the process properly. The danger for some is that they want to suppress their feelings and not deal with them. If they don’t, it will hurt them down the road and possibly for a lifetime. Remind them that God’s grace is sufficient for them, even when they want to yell at God. We must be foolish enough to trust God to keep His promises, even if we don’t understand why bad things happen. I YOUTH MINISTRY STUDENT The rain falls on the righteous and the unrighteous – God is with us in the storm, and He will see us through the storm. TRD I’M IN A CRISIS RIGHT NOW FEATURE ARTICLE << When was the last time you or your ministry was in a crisis? I’m in one right now. Last Sunday, our pastor announced to the church that he would be transitioning into a full-time counseling ministry within a few months. So what is the crisis? Well, I have experienced this before –a new senior pastor, a new philosophy, and unfortunately a new staff. In May of 2009 I had just come home from our biggest and best weekend retreat. So when I got an email from the new senior pastor asking to meet with me that morning I expected nothing but praise—well, maybe praise and a raise! Instead, I was told that the Deacons had met on the Thursday before the retreat and decided to ask for my resignation –effective immediately. I was not allowed to say goodbye to my students or to the church, and told I was not allowed to even speak with my students. The reason? I was “too contemporary” and that I “didn’t fit in here.” The actual truth came to light when the new pastor’s best friend’s son was hired as the youth pastor. Within a matter of days I was jobless, homeless, and completely desperate. For the next year my family (wife and two children) lived in a onebedroom apartment, worked odd jobs, and struggled to put food on the table. I’m not looking for a pity party. Trust me I know I’m not the only youth pastor to experience this. Unfortunately, this story is far too common within the church. Quite frankly, it sucks! (If that is too strong, go with “stinks.”) It was almost a year to the day later that we moved to a different state and joined the staff of an amazing church. Early on we knew this church was different. Grace was not just a theology, it was a reality. People lived in it and through it. We were home. Jeans? Yep! Cool music? Yep! Supportive pastor and board? Yep! Finally, a church where I “fit in”! So when I heard the pastor announce his resignation last Sunday, I immediately started to relive the crisis from just a few years ago. I’m not just worried about my future, but for the future of this church I love. The church is less than ten years old and just built a $1.5 million building. It was formed as the result of an ugly church split when my pastor resigned in the midst of turmoil. Five hundred people followed him, and they started over. Just like last time, board members are telling me, “Don’t worry, your job is safe.” But I am worried. I don’t know what the future will bring. The thought of moving again –with a daughter in her sophomore year of high school, a son in sixth grade, and a newborn –scares me to death. So I’m wondering, will this time will be different? Will my family and I survive the transition, or will I be searching those youth ministry job sites? Will my kids graduate from the schools they love, or will they have to make new friends –again? I know the answer for living through a crisis. Be still, don’t worry, pray, and seek His face. (Psalm 46:10; Philippians 4:6-7; Matthew 6:33) I’ve shared those verses with Page 11 others in crisis. I’ve walked along side broken and desperate people. I know the “answers.” But I’m struggling. I want to trust God. I want to believe our church leadership. I want to be here for years to come. I want to be faithful no matter what happens. But I’m struggling. Even as I write this someone just posted this verse on Facebook. “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.” (Matthew 6:34 MSG) I know. I know. I’m trying. I’m trying to be still. I’m trying not to worry. I’m trying to pray. I’m trying to seek His face. So if you have been through it, going through it, or it’s coming –please know you are not alone. As much as I may not “want to hear it” myself, I know God’s Word is true. So, as best as possible – be still, don’t worry, pray, and seek His face. Gotta love church politics. CRISIS: I’M IN ONE RIGHT NOW One of our key YLO members volunteered to share his current crisis situation. We’ve kept this anonymous © 2013, INTERLíNC. INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM / 800.725.3300 Page 12 TRD American Bible Challenge FEATURE ARTICLE >> INTERVIEW WITH JEFFHOSTFOXWORTHY OF THE AMERICAN BIBLE CHALLENGE Our friend Josh Griffin, the High School Pastor at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, did this interview with well-known comedian Jeff Foxworthy. Thanks Josh for asking just the right questions! Used with permission from: MoreThanDodgeball.com and Group/Simply Youth Ministry. Over the years, I’ve had several “guest” posts about the importance of teaching teenagers the Bible. I recently had a chance to fire a few questions at another special guest: comedian Jeff Foxworthy, host of Game Show Network’s new TV show, The American Bible Challenge. I felt like that would be an appeal to someone who is outside of having faith. What is your goal with the show? To make the message of God appealing to someone who doesn’t know it. That’s real important to me. Those people are going to ask themselves, “What would make somebody spend their free time collecting food for somebody?” What’s your favorite verse, passage, or story? I should probably be concerned about this, because I’ve never heard anyone else say it’s their favorite verse, (laughs), but mine is Galatians 1:10 Why did you agree to be the Host of a “game show” about the Bible? When first asked, I thought, “Man, I don’t ever want to do something that exploits faith.” The thing that sold me on it, that’s unlike any game show you’ve seen, is that no one is playing the keep the prizes for themselves. They’re giving every dime of it away. When you read the Bible, the only people Jesus got sideways with were the Pharisees. Not the tax collectors, or the sinners. INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM / 800.725.3300 – “Am I now seeking the approval of man or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.” In the business of comedy, you depend on people’s approval in order to make a living. I don’t want to get caught up in that. I’ll give you an example. In my career, I’ve probably turned down 6 or 7 movies because they were going to be a couple of months out of the summer and I’d look at my kids and think, I’ve only got 4 more summers with them, I’m not giving one away. I love what I do. I still think, “I can’t believe I got away with this.” It’s what I do, but it’s not who I am. It’s NOT where my identity is. If it went away tomorrow, that’s okay. The truth of the matter is, we’re never going to please everybody. I do believe if I live my life in a way that’s pleasing to God, I mean really, how can someone else get upset with that? Are your kids involved in a youth group? Yeah, but they’re 18 and 20 now. My youngest is a senior in high school. Just won homecoming queen Friday night, but asked me on Saturday, “Hey dad, will you go with me on a mission trip to Kenya.” She’s been three or four times. That’s how they spend their spring breaks, working in a slum in Kenya. She’s popular and she’s pretty, but she’s been to Africa, Russia and China. She and her sister have helped raise money to help more kids. They’re living it out. INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM / 800.725.3300 AD Bible Challenge TRD hoa: RED HEART OF THE ARTIST << Scott Osterbind had the chance to catch up with RED’s guitarist, Anthony Armstrong to talk about their much-anticipated new album, Release The Panic. that trap of pursuing the perfect life –perfect family, job, money, etc. What would you say to that young person seeking perfection? You recorded Release The Panic in LA with accomplished producer Howard Benson. How was this process different from previous albums, and how were you challenged? Perfection seems to be the way we all want to live. We try to wrap ourselves in the “best” clothing, blah, blah, blah, and chase down a life that seemingly makes everything better. But, that does not exist, at least in the way that the world and the media say it does. The perfect life isn’t defined by anyone but the person living it. It’s not about living the way some one else tells you to live, but about being content on your own and as a believer. It’s about living the life that GOD intended. It was definitely a challenge. First, we actually moved out to L.A. and lived there while we made the record. None of us have lived like that since we were in college. With a new producer comes a new approach to making a record. Instead of working with one man, Howard had a team that we worked with. We had to get the record recorded in 30 days so it was literally 29 days of nonstop recording –which takes a toll on you physically and mentally. We had been writing for over a year, and we were still writing while we were recording. We actually finished the bulk of the record there. So there were many cogs turning all simultaneously. The first single released on the album is called “Perfect Life.” So many people fall in There are so many people who deal with anxiety. How does the title track “Release The Panic” address this issue? Why worry? Seems like a difficult thing not to worry because it is. We are stupid humans that try to control everything. With that “control” –things always seem to fall apart. We end up worrying about whatever follows. We tend to complicate everything in our lives. As believers we need to be Page 15 faithful and know that the battle has already been won. The trivial things we worry about shouldn’t control us. RED will be the road nonstop this year. How do you hope your new songs from Release The Panic will touch the lives or your audience? We hope that our music will inspire anyone who hears it. There’s a state of panic out there. Our responsibility is to deliver this inspiration in a big way. Music is always on the front line. That’s the way we like it: in the trenches. Being so busy, how do you guys plan on staying connected and encouraged? We have a great group of guys that we work with. We stay connected by being connected to a family. That’s what we are: a family. We all have wonderful families at home and are always checking in and FaceTiming to see their faces. On the road we are all we have, and it’s our job to get into the Word and feed ourselves spiritually every day. It’s the definition of who we are. © 2013, INTERLíNC. INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM / 800.725.3300 Page 16 What is the overall message of your new album? Reckless started as a word that kept being embedded in my mind, so I looked up its meaning: doing something without regards for the consequences. It occurred to me that “reckless” is a lot like true faith. When I step out in faith, no matter the circumstance, I know that God will take care of me. Paul was a biblical example of living re cklessly for Christ. In 2 Corinthians, 4 he returned to Lystra after being stoned for witnessing to people in the city because he knew the Lord called him to go back. He wrote, “I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me— the ta sk of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.” (Acts 20:23-24) Paul knew that he would face trials and persecution, but God had placed a call on his life and wanted him to surrender his heart to the Lord. My desire, and the message in this song, is to completely surrender everything to God. I want to be able to do what God calls me to do without worrying. That’s being sold out for Christ. I don’t want to miss out on the fullness of what God has for me, so when God calls me, I want to be willing to go! It’s hard to believe this is already your seventh studio release. How has your sound changed? I think that everything came out almost better than I expected. Musically and vocally, it’s more raw, but in a good way. Like with “Reckless,” instead of bringing in heavy guitar for the chorus, we cranked up the keys and let the piano take that melody. We were over-thinking it in a good way, going back and forth with each other always asking, “What impacts most?” My producer and friend, Andy Dodd, and I really put our blood, sweat, and tears into this. There’s a lot of passion in this album, and it really reflects what God is doing in my life! TRD HOA: JEREMY CAMP HEART OF THE ARTIST >> can do for you that I’ve never done before that will make you happy?” I looked at her and said, “You don’t have to do anything to make me happy. You make me happy.” I heard the lesson God was teaching me through that moment. Just as my daughter knew I loved her, so do we know God loves us and that’s why we desire to please him out of love and not obligation. “The Way You Love Me” is almost a direct response to the action of being reckless. When I think about what Christ has done and the depth of His love, despite how wretched I am, I want to tell the world about His love. In the same way, we are called to love as He loved. Paul wrote, “If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.” (1 Corin thians 13:3) And, “…neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:39) That’s God’s love, and that’s the love that I want to share with others. How do you hope the message behind Reckless penetrates the heart of those who are in the audience? My hope is that this album encourages people to step into the f ullness of what God has called them to do, and take action. The songs are meant to encourage all of us to go out, not just me. If we can all work together and be in the same place spiritually, that body of Christ working together can fuel a passion that is truly great. There is power in numbers! Not only do you have new music to share, but you have also written a book called I Still Believe. Can you share a li ttle bit about what it reveals? It’s a revised and expanded version of the original that I released last year. We worked with Tyndale on going deeper into my story and taking a different approach. This book shows the Lord’s calling on my life and how that came about, in a lot more detail. How did your daughter inspire “The Way You Love Me”? Also, we all love songwriting; so we love the man y months we spent writing for this record. Talk about your family made their way from Russia to the United States and how as brothers you decided to form the band Everfound. Can you share a couple of the stories behind your favorite songs on the album? We came to the US in 1996. It was quite the process and took a few years to get all the paperwork figured out because, as you know, Russia used to be a communist country. We came as religious refugees because our family was persecuted for being Christian. My great grandfather spent more than twenty years in prison after being vocal about his faith and refusing to give up his Bible. My parents were denied jobs because they were believers. When the paperwork was approved my parents sold our house, bought plane tickets, packed u s up, and we came to Colorado. In our family, you begin piano lessons the day you turn six, so music was always part of our childhood. My parents gave us an incredible childhood and always raised us to live for Christ. We were about thirteen or fourteen when our youth group needed a worship team, so we began fiddling with instruments. It took a few years for us to determine who was good at what instrument, b ut eventually we figured it out and that’s how the band was born. What was your favorite part about the recording process? We all have different favorite parts because it’s such a big process and it’s so personal. We would probably collectively agree that getting into the studio with the producers, “Never Beyond Repair” really snuck up on us. When we were writing it, we were thinking of all the broken people who feel too messed up for even Jesus to fix. When we got home and let the song sit a little, we realized we were the broken people who needed to hear that the forgiveness of Jesus is proof that we’re not beyond repair. We all have broken things in our lives that God doesn’t repair in an instant; sometimes the repair is a process that can take years. This song reminded us that although repair may be a process and can take a while, God promises that He will indeed repair us. A few weeks later we debuted the song at a concert and we’ll never forget when a girl approached us aft er the event with scars all across her arms. She said she was feeling hopeless and has attempted suicide. She came to the concert with her friend and when she heard “Never beyond Repair” she felt God saying that He was not done with her yet and that He loved her. At that moment we knew the song had to be on the record. You are touring with the Dare 2 Share youth conference to play your music for thousands of teens. What is your hope for this opportunity? We hope to encourage students to live their lives for Jesus amid all the pressure they face to live for other things – to be bold about sharing their faith with their friends. The chorus of “Take This City” shares what we hope happens: “So let’s take this city, our souls are singing, oh there’s a fire in our bones, I know we won’t be defeated, if Love is lead ing, we’re laying down our stones.” Christ has called us to love people and to be His hands and feet in our relationships, schools, homes, and communities. Who inspires you to do what you do? Much of our inspiration comes from God’s Word; nothing beats being in the presence of God and having Him show us things in His Word. Our family also inspires us. I mentioned my great grandfather spending twenty years in prison for his faith, and recently we found out our grandmother was a survivor of the Nazi concentration camp called Dachau. Musically, we’re inspired by bands like U2, Coldplay, My Chemical Romance, Muse, The Killers, Switchfoot –just to name a few! Siblings often don’t always see eye to eye. How do you guys work out conflicts together and keep each other on track? We have a “no holding it in” policy. We try to talk everything out without letting any hard feelings settle. We haven’t spent a day apart in probably four or five years –and when that does happen, it’s a bit strange. My parents taught us to always talk things out. Do we fight? Of course. But, we never leave it unresolved. When we go up on stage, we want to do all that we can to have our heads and hearts in the right place. We talk about these huge themes like “What Love Means” and we want to make sure we are honest with where we’re at. The audience and people around you can see through whatever facade you’re trying to put up. © 2013, INTERLíNC. INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM / 800.725.3300 Page Leader Guide 18 CONGRADULATIONS! If we choose to join a frat or sorority, we may not have the time to get a job. Sometimes we have to give up one thing to experience another. God calls us to live for Christ and as reflections of Christ in our world. Often this requires sacrifice. God calls us to bring His kingdom into the world. Through Bible study and discussion, your students will see that although things may seem too hard and life feels too difficult, God will turn those bad things into good for Christ followers. Warm Up Before the students arrive, have the chairs set up as if you will be playing musical chairs. Have a few jars of baby food available, and provide a spoon to each person. Play music like you would for musical chairs, but everyone stays seated, just a jar of baby food is passed around. When the music stops, the person holding the jar must eat the whole jar, nothing can be left. Remember to tell the students that nothing can be wasted; it all has to be eaten. If they can’t finish, they can call on someone else to finish the jar. Then, both people are out and their chairs are removed. Play this for a while. Transition When the game is over, ask the students to describe how being stuck with the jar felt and how they reacted to having to eat the whole thing. Then ask people who where picked to finish the jars to describe how they felt about being and having to finish someone else’s “problem.” The Song Tell the students that they will be listening to the song, “Nothing is Wasted” by Elevation Worship. Tell them that you will play the song a couple times so that they can fill in their Student Guides. “You are (LOVING), you are (WISE). nothing is (TOO) (HARD) for our God. Nothing is (WASTED). What do you think this verse means? Sounds as though He doesn’t have any favorites. But, maybe what God is saying that bad things will happen to good people. He will not place in a bubble or place a force field around us so that we free from the natural progression of things. •John 16:33b –In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. From this verse, what is Jesus saying to His followers? He is saying that, “Yes, life is going to rough, but if we follow Him, we will experience victory because Jesus has gone ahead of us and has cleared the way. •Deuteronomy 31:6 – Be strong and courageous. Warm Up Go to a thrift store and buy a few different inexpensive, brightly colored, ceramic plates. You’ll also need clear tape, a hammer, and a pair of safety glasses. Set the plates on a large table in front of the room. As you’re introducing the session, put on the safety glasses and break the plates into pieces with a hammer. Keep the pieces of each plate together. Then have the students divide into teams and attempt to put the pieces together using the tape. Set a time limit and give a prize to the group whose plate is most complete. Transition Ask, “Once the plate is broken, can you restore it to its original condition?” Explain that our lives can be a lot like those plates. When we sin, we do damage to ourselves and to others. Sometimes that damage can’t be easily undone. But, there is One who can fix what is broken in us. The Song Say, “The band Everfound has a song called ‘Never Beyond Repair.’ As you listen to the song, think about things you’ve done wrong and what you can do to make things right.” Play the song. Transition Say, “Many people have taken the hammer of sin to their lives and have broken them badly. Let’s look at three stories in the Bible that show us ways to make things right.” © 2013 interlínc / interlinc-online.com / 800.725.3300 Bible Study The Three R’s Of Grace Hand out the Student Guides. Have the students read Luke 19:1-10 and answer the questions on the Student Guide. Zacchaeus did what he could to make things right. That’s called “restitution.” We should always do what we can to make things right, but sometimes there’s not much we can do. Have the students read John 8:1-11 (the story of the woman caught in adultery) and answer the questions on the Student Guide. Jesus told the woman to go and leave her life of sin. That’s called “repentance.” One of the best ways to overcome our brokenness is to turn away from the things that break us in the first place. Have the students read Acts 9:1-9, 19b-20 and answer the questions on the Student Guide. This is the story of how God turned Saul, the murderous persecutor of the church into Paul, the greatest church planter of all time. It’s a story of “redemption.” God’s redemption of Paul changed his life and the world. Study by: DAVE WEISS AMOKARTS.COM MOHRSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA [email protected] Wrap Up Explain that while Restitution, Repentance, and Redemption can fix our broken lives, just experiencing them is like trying to tape together a broken life. To really be healed and forgiven we need God’s grace. The good news is: He gives it freely. In Christ, no one is beyond the reach of grace. Finish by reading Romans 8:111, 35-39, and have the students answer the questions at the end of the Student Guide. Then close in prayer. For a bonus project, get a sheet of plywood, some tile cement, and grout, and make a mosaic from your broken plates to remind your students that God can take our broken pieces and recreate us. Living in this fallen world sometimes causes us to default to despair. Today’s lesson will help students rediscover the hope we find in Christ despite the situation. Students will identify why they can have hope, and how to have hope in the midst of a hopeless world. Warm Up Hand out the Student Guides. Give your group five minutes to complete the Hope And No Hope exercise. When the time is up, give your group opportunity to share their lists. Once this is complete, use these questions for discussion: Transition Say something like, “We can find many reasons to be discouraged and hopeless. Evil in our world brings many disappointments and causes us to despair. In today’s lesson we will be reminded that God is in charge and has given us every reason to have hope. We will look at why we can have hope, and how to have hope regardless of the challenges we face.” The Song Introduce this song by going to the band’s website and learning a little about the group. Give a quick background. Also explain this is the last album for their lead singer, Lacey, who will be taking a rest. Play the song as your group works through the New Horizons, New Hope exercise. •What causes us to have hope in a person, event, or thing? •What causes us to lose hope? •Why do some of our childhood hopes and dreams disappear? © 2013 interlínc / interlinc-online.com / 800.725.3300 Transition Ask for volunteers to share the observations they noted. Then, use these questions to reflect on the video: •What do the words, “Sin with a conquest, life floods in with a new quest, here’s a voice for the voiceless and a song for the soulless” tell you about hope? •Why is it important for us, as the song says, “when the times keep going wrong” for us to “go right?” Say something like, “We can ‘fly’ toward ‘new horizons’ as we keep our eyes on God. Any other focus will bring anguish. Let’s see what the Bible says about the importance of hope.” Bible Study Have one of your most enthusiastic readers present Isaiah 40:27-31. As he or she is reading, have the group pantomime some of the action words they hear, such as “tired” or “strength.” Encourage the reader to pause on those words. When the passage is finished, ask the students to find a partner to work through the Hope = Strength exercise where they will draw a picture of this passage and then answer these questions: FREE METHODIST CHURCH SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA [email protected] •What do these words say about God? •What do these words say about youth/young people? •What happens to those who hope in the Lord? Follow with these questions: •What characteristics of God, in these words of Isaiah, give you hope? •How is God different from youth? •Why does this give us hope? •What does this teach us about the danger of putting our hope in people instead of God? Wrap-Up Say something like, “When we put our hope in the Lord we find strength to not be dependent on how good or bad our situation may be. Believing this is important, but it can be a challenge.” As a group, create a list on newsprint or a whiteboard of ways to keep our hope in God. First, ask something lighthearted: •What is your favorite kind of cereal? •In a movie about your life, who would you pick to play the role of you? •If you had to pick one food to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? •Etc. Be creative! Then ask this more serious, on-topic question: “If you could reinvent one thing about yourself, what would it be and why?” Some possible answers: My “look.” My reputation. My talents. My interests. Transition Explain that people often seek a reinvention of sorts, a renewal of whom they are and how people see them. This would be a good opportunity to share a personal example; perhaps you went to college and hoped to escape the type of person you were in high school, or you reinvented your style, taste in music, or changed drastically through a relationship. Share a personal story from your life experiences about seeking this type of renewal. The Song Play “Beautiful Things” by Gungor. Transition Ask the students how they liked the song. Ask them whether they have any shirts at home If newborns are the ones who are that are that dirty. “brand new” physically, how can a person your age be “brand new?” Can you be “brand new” on the inside? What would that look like? Explain that our hearts are dirty with sin. God created the world as pure and clean as the white shirt, and our sin has tainted the world. Ever since sin came along, we humans have been born sinners, dirtying our shirts and hearts all of our lives. Although we are filthy with sin, we can be made completely clean and sin-free on the inside, shining just as brightly as the clean white shirt. Objective Warm Up Transition Transition © 2013 interlínc / interlinc-online.com / 800.725.3300 Have the group turn to John 3:121, and read aloud the story of Jesus and Nicodemus. In verse 2, Nicodemus was really confused by what Jesus meant when Jesus described being born a second time. Explain that being “born again” is the same idea as being “brand new.” A brand-new baby is called a “newborn” precisely because it has just been born. Explain that we can become “brand new” in our soul, just as a newborn baby is “brand new” physically. Have the group read again John 3:18. Explain that Jesus came to show how dirty with sin people truly are. Many people reject Jesus and His message because they do not want to deal with the difficult truth of how “dirty” their heart is. Have the group read again John 3:17. Explain that the point of Christ’s coming was not to make everyone feel guilty, although telling the difficult truth about sin does lead a person to feel guilt. His primary purpose, though, was to fix the problem! He wanted to become the bleach that can turn our shirts from filthy to the purest clean. He did this by being a perfectly clean white shirt for His entire life, the only human to do so. Even more, FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH PHILADELPHIA, MISSISSIPPI [email protected] Have the group read again John 3:16. Explain that believing in Jesus –giving our whole life (and whole shirt) to Him –will result in escaping the punishment for our filthy hearts (and shirts). He makes our souls brand new! Our filth is bleached away, and we are as clean in our hearts as the purest clean white shirt. Our whole attitude and outlook changes, because we now live for Him instead of living for ourselves. Have the group read Isaiah 1:18. Explain that their sins can be taken away and they can become as clean as clean can be. Have the group read 2 Corinthians 5:17. Explain that becoming a Christian means a change in all parts of our life. Wrap Up Close with prayer. In whatever manner is suitable for your group, offer them a chance to make a decision to follow Christ, to be forgiven of their sins, and to be made “brand new.” Student Guide JSON Artist: Album Title & Record Company: Song: Theme: JSON FACEBOOK.COM/JSON116 GROWING PAINS LAMP MODE RECORDINGS BRAND NEW SALVATION; REGENERATION (NEW LIFE) Count! Warm Up Super Hero Charades – Before the students arrive, write 10-25 names of superheroes on slips of paper and put them in a bowl. (You can look up superheroes online.) When your students arrive, form teams. Play “Charades” with these names and when the other team guesses, they must also tell what super power that superhero possesses. Transition Ask the group who their favorite superhero is and why. Ask them what super power they would like to have and why. The Song Explain that the greatest superhero of all times is God – that He created all power and has all power. Tell them they will be listening to a song by Planetshakers called, “Limitless” which speaks of God’s unlimited power. Play the song. Transition Ask the students if they heard anything in the song that God cannot do. Ask them what some of the adjectives of God’s power are, and what powers God has. Bible Study Begin this section by saying, “What does God’s limitless power have to do with us? The songs states that, ‘I’m saying goodbye to any limitation, I’m saying hello to the God of all creation’, so what does that mean to us? Let’s see what the Bible has to say.” Have a volunteer read a verse. Then discuss with the group what that verse says about God’s power. •Luke 1:37 – Nothing is impossible for God. •Matthew 19:26 – Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”’ •Philippians 4:13 – I can do all this through him who gives me strength. •Isaiah 41:10 – So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. Have students work in pairs to come up with words describing prayer that start with those letters. After giving them about 2-3 minutes to work on this, have each pair share some of their words. Transition Try to use one or two of the words your students came up with to discuss how we pray in different circumstances. Are our prayers different when life is going smoothly than when we are in the middle of a problem? The Song As you play “Need You Now” by Plumb, have students use the Song section of the Student Guide to fill in the blanks from part of the lyrics (the blanks are “beauty” and “holding on”), and answer the questions about the lyrics. Transition After the song is finished, walk through their answers with them and discuss their reactions. Ask, “What kind of intensity rating would you give this prayer?” 1-10 (10 being strongest) Ask whether they have ever been in a situation when their prayers were at a similar level of intensity. You might share a time in your own life when your prayer was more like crying out to God for help rather than a “thank you, God, for this food” kind of prayer. © 2013 interlínc / interlinc-online.com / 800.725.3300 Bible Study The Bible is filled with examples of people crying out to God for help in all kinds of difficult situations. (Because there is no such thing as a perfect life. The perfect life is a lie.) Start Living – Romans 12:2 –The band says it this way, “I will turn, I will walk away. I won’t become you, won’t become you.” Theme Students will discuss the differences and benefits of living an “authentic” life instead of a “perfect” life. Warm Up Secret Identity –Before students arrive prepare nametags for every student and leader in your group. On each nametag write a famous person’s name (a historical figure, an actor, sports celebrity, or a popular politician.) As students arrive, place the nametag on their backs. (Don’t let them see it.) Everyone goes around and asks people yes-or-no questions about who is on their back. They can only ask one question of each person. The person who can identify “who they are” with the least number of questions wins. Transition As students make their way back to their seats, discuss: •Who admired the person who was their secret identity? •Who are some of the people throughout history that we should admire? Say, “Let’s listen to the new song from a band that I admire called RED.” Originally from Pennsylvania, RED is a Nashvillebased rock band comprised of Michael Barnes (vocals), Anthony Armstrong (guitar), Randy Armstrong (bass), and Joe Rickard (drums). They’ve garnered two GRAMMY nominations, five GMA Dove Awards, two Top 10 Active Rock singles, three Top 10 Mainstream Rock singles, and 10 consecutive No. 1 hits at Christian radio. Hand out the Student Guides. Encourage the students to list some of the attributes that we should admire and some of the attributes that the world tells us to admire that we really shouldn’t. Here’s a hint: just think about reality TV. Transition Discuss the lists the students have compiled. Bible Study We started by playing Secret Identity. When we think of some of those famous people, have you ever thought, “Man, they have the perfect life”? © 2013 interlínc / interlInc-online.com / 800.725.3300 •What does the “world” tell us is the “perfect life”? •They go on to say, “Nothing wrong, nothing real inside. All I see is a perfect lie.” Why do people want us to believe that “nothing is wrong” with their life? (Try to get students to say “pride.”) Here are three important factors to living an authentic life: Stop Pretending – Romans 3:10 •Almost every Christian knows or has at least heard this verse, so why do you think so many of us spend so much energy pretending to be perfect? •What does it accomplish? (Nothing, hypocrisy, etc.) Stop Lying – Psalm 34:18; 51:17; Matthew 5:3-4; James 4:6 What do those verses tell us about being honest with God? •What are some ways that we’ll lie about our brokenness? •What are some ways we lie about our relationship with God? •What do those lies accomplish? THE GATHERING DAYTON OHIO [email protected] •What are some behaviors of the world that we tend to copy? •What are some behaviors that we need to turn and walk away from? Instead of pretending and lying about those things, let’s ask God to transform us and change the way we think about those behaviors. Wrap Up Say, “This lesson can be summed up in one word: authenticity. God wants us to be authentic in our relationship with Him in relationship with others. Pretending you have the ‘perfect life’ doesn’t do you, me, or anyone else any good. Let’s become authentic followers of Christ. That means stop pretending we have it all figured out; stop pretending everything is fine; stop pretending we are perfect. God knows you’re not perfect. We know it too. Warm Up Before the students meet, set up a barrier (a blanket, a large appliance box, etc.) that can separate one person from the rest of the group. Enlist some students to help with the activity. Each one will be speaking to a member of the group from the other side of the barrier. These students may disguise their voices. Ask for some volunteers who think they have exceptional hearing, and place them behind the barrier. Bring the student volunteers in one at a time and have them talk to the one behind the barrier. After a few seconds, have the one attempt to guess with whom they are talking. After a few attempts, have the students use their true voice. When correctly identifying their peer, bring in the next one. Explain that sometimes when we call out to God, He doesn’t seem to recognize our voice. Some days He doesn’t seem to hear us at all. If God were like us, He might not know who was speaking with Him or get it the right the first time. But God hears us immediately and knows our heart! The Song Hand out the Student Guides. Saul was still king. He was jealous and wanted to kill David so David ran and hid in the Judean wilderness. In Psalm 63, David wrote about that experience. In the first verse, David might have felt like God was far from him. There was urgency in his prayers. What words describe the way he felt? (“You are my God.”) The situation was so bad that David could only go to God. No one else could help him. •“I seek You earnestly.” David never gave up even though he didn’t hear God’s voice. •“My soul thirsts for You.” My soul will die without your life-giving refreshing. •“My body longs for You in a desolate place where there is no water.” I will die in this place without your help. David was depending on God’s grace and mercy to see him through this tough time. Read Psalm 63:2-8. David remembers that when he was in a bad spot before, God answered him and he was saved. We know from the life of David that God did hear him and rescued him from those troubles. He doesn’t leave us in the desert of life but will provide for our needs. Write down, under What I Need To Do, how you will trust God when times get tough. Wrap Up Explain that God does want to provide something greater for our lives, and He wants us to call out to Him in the good and tough times. Although you may think that He is not listening, God hears every word. None of us have ever been chased by a crazy king and ended up trying to survive in the desert. That would be bad. These can be any experience like standing alone in triumph (as in our game), being the only one to pray over lunch at school, being picked on, etc. Give them some time to write down their thoughts. When most of them are done writing, ask if some of the students would like to share what they wrote. Let this discussion go on as long as there is good sharing. If you can, note some of these instances on a white board or piece of paper to refer to later. it. If so, ask them to recap the story; if not, read the story as a group. God’s Presence Objective Students will realize that God stands with them no matter what –even when they feel alone. Warm Up Have a good old-fashioned balloon stomp. For this, you will need a bag of balloons and some pieces of string. Hand each student a balloon and string. Have the students inflate the balloons until they are about as big as their heads, tie them off, and then tie them to their shins with the piece of string. When you say, “Go”, everyone tries to pop everyone else’s balloon. The last person standing with a balloon is the winner. When a balloon is popped, that player is out. If you want, play a couple of rounds. Transition Ask your group what playing the game was like? How did they feel when they got out? How does the winner feel? Tell the students that you want to communicate the idea of standing alone in today’s session. Hand out the Student Guides and ask the kids to write down The Song Say, “A band called Spoken recently wrote a song about standing alone. Let’s listen to it and see how it might add to our discussion. As we listen, jot down any lyrics that stick with you.” Play the song. Transition Ask whether any of the students would like to share what they wrote. Bible Study Much of the imagery in this song is taken from the story of Shadrach, Mechach, Abednego, and the fiery furnace, often a Sunday school favorite. This story is found in Daniel 3. Ask whether your students are familiar with © 2013 interlínc / interlinc-online.com / 800.725.3300 In this story, we encounter three young men who stand for their beliefs. These young men are living in captivity. At this point in history the Jews were conquered by the Babylonians, many of them were taken as captives to Babylon –a city in a foreign land that had a foreign religion. This is the case for these three young men. No matter how nicely they are treated or find their accommodations; they know that they are prisoners in the land they are living. These young men were living in a hostile environment. Have you ever felt that you were living in an environment like this? How so? Then the king becomes furious with their actions (actually lack of action), and prepares to throw them into a furnace. How do you think they respond? How would you respond? In Daniel 3:16-18 we read their words –their response is mind blowing! They state that God is in control, not the king. They do not need to defend themselves. They also say that if God wants to save them from the furnace, He will –but if He does not, their faith will remain. This is amazing! Ask your group what they think of this response. Study by: DAN SCHEWE FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH MONTICELLO, MINNESOTA [email protected] Now return to some of the times your students said they felt as though they were standing alone. Ask them which of those are times when they felt like God was with them or not with them. Often we think that God is only with us when things are good, and not when things are bad. Yet this story reminds us that God is with us always, in the good times and in the bad. If they are saved from the furnace, great! But, if not, it will not affect their faith. They were prepared to burn for their faith. Yet, we find that they do not. Instead, we find that God stands with them in the fire. Paul also talks about this concept. Ask one of the students to read Romans 8:38-39. According to this passage, what can separate us from God? (nothing) Wrap Up Let the group know that God will always stand with them, even when they feel they are standing alone and the entire world is against them. Nothing can separate them from the love of God. When tough times come, God is always right there standing beside them, even if they don’t feel it. Close your time together in prayer. I totally believe in being progressive, modern, and cool –but if that’s what defines our worship services, we’re missing the mark. Jesus actually gave us a great model for communication and interaction. He was amazing at speaking the language of His audience. When He spoke with fishermen, He spoke about fish; when He spoke to tax collectors, He spoke about the issues pertaining to them. This is a powerful picture of worship services. We need to speak the language of the audience with which we are communicating. I believe the church should be ahead of the world when it comes to relevance. Daniel was head and shoulders above his peers in understanding and speaking to the culture. He knew Babylonian thoroughly and could communicate it brilliantly. But, he was more than relevant – he was prophetic. He interpreted a dream for a nation and a generation; in other words, he gave them an encounter with God. Coming back to Jesus, He spoke the language but most importantly, He gave those who came into contact with Him an encounter with God. That’s what our modern worship services should do: create an environment where people can worship in spirit and truth. It’s not either/or, it’s both. A modern worship experience should have all the elements that communicate the message in a contemporary way. The lights, the sounds, and the look are all important to communicate what we believe. Many people have come to our church and said the production is off the charts. As good as that is, we also want to communicate we are passionate about God. Prayer and passion all help create an environment to experience and encounter God’s presence. People won’t necessarily remember the lights and screens, but they will remember the encounter they had with God. After all, that’s what worship is all about –encountering God. © 2013 interlínc / interlinc-online.com / 800.725.3300 << Page 55 The Anthem Beautiful Things Dark Horses Planetshakers Gungor Switchfoot Intro: Gb Bbm Fm/Ab Gb Bbm Fm/Ab Verse 1: G A/G D All this pain Verse: G A/G D I wonder if I’ll ever find my way G A/G Bm7 D/F# G A/G D I wonder if I my life could really change at all G A/G D All this earth G A/G D Could all that is lost ever be found G A/G Bm7 D/F# G A/G D Could a garden come up from this ground at all Intro: A5 C5 F5 D5 (x4) Verse 1: A5 F5 D5 I’ve made my mistakes, I’ve seen my heart cave in A5 F5 D5 I got my scars, I’ve been to hell and back again Gb Bbm Ab By His stripes we are healed Gb Bbm Ab By His nail-pierced hands we’re free Gb Bbm Ab By His blood we’re washed clean Gb Bbm Ab Now we have the victo - ry Pre-Chorus: Ebm The power of sin is broken Db/F Ab Ab/C Db Jesus overcame it all Ebm He has won our freedom Db/F Ab Gb/Bb Ab/C Jesus has won it all Chorus 1: D You make beautiful things You make beautiful things out of the dust You make beautiful things You make beautiful things out of us Chorus: Bbm Ab/C Db Ebm Bbm Ab Hallelu- jah, You have won the victo - ry Bbm Ab/C Db Ebm Bbm Ab Hallelu- jah, You have won it all for me Gb Bbm Death could not hold You down Ab Ebm Bbm Ab You are the risen King Gb Bbm Ab Seated in majesty, Ab Ebm Bbm Ab You are the risen King Verse 2: All around Life is springing up from this old ground Out of chaos life is being found in You Repeat Verse / Pre-Chorus / Chorus Instrumental: D F#m G D Instrumental: Gb Ab Gb Ab Gb/Bb Ab/C Gb/Bb Ab/C Bridge: (Repeat as desired. 1st time, no alt. bass) Gb Ab Our God is risen, He is alive Gb/Bb Ab/C He won the victory, He reigns on high A5 F5 D5 Born for the blue skies, We’ll survive the rain A5 F5 Born for the sunrise, We’ll survive the pain Chorus: A5 C5 We’re singing hey, you can’t count us out F5 D5 We’ve been running up against the crowd A5 C5 F5 D5 Yeah, we are the dark horses A5 C5 We’re singing wait, it’s not over now F5 D5 We’ve been down but we’ve never been out A5 C5 F5 D5 Yeah, we are the dark horses Verse 2: We found a way out, The city takes everything it can But outside the crowds, I can feel my lungs again Pre chorus Chorus Tag: A5 C5 F5 D5 We’re singing la, la la, la la la la A5 C5 F5 D5 La, la la, la la la la Chorus 2: D You make beautiful things D+ You make beautiful things out of the dust G You make beautiful things You make beautiful things out of us Interlude: A5 C5 F5 D5 (x2) Bridge: A5 C5 F5 D5 Born for the blue skies (repeat) A5 F5 D5 Born for the sunrise, We’ll survive the pain Interlude Chorus Tag (Remove “We’re singing”) Interlude (x1/2) Outro (whispered): Keep running with the dark horses Hope makes the blood change courses Keep running with the dark horses Stand up for the dark horses Bridge: D F#m G D You make me new, You are making me new Repeat Chorus Joth Hunt, Henry Seeley, Liz Webber © 2007, 2013 Planetshakers Ministries Int’l (adm by Integrity Music via EMICMGPublishing.com) Pre-Chorus: Lisa Gungor and Michael Gungor, © 2009 WorshipTogether. com Songs (ASCAP) Written by Jonathan Foreman and Tim Foreman. © 2011 Publishing Schumblishing/ (ASCAP) © 2013 interlínc / interlinc-online.com / 800.725.3300 Page >> 56 modern worship section The Earth is Yours Give Me Faith Great Is Your Love Gungor Elevation Worship Planetshakers Verse 1: D A/C# Your voice it thunders, the oaks start twisting Bm7 G The forest sounds with cedars breaking D F#m The waters see You, and start their writhing Bm7 G From the depths a song is rising Verse 1: A E F#m I need You to soften my heart D To break me apart A E I need You to open my eyes F#m D To see that You’re shaping my life Intro: D Bm G Pre-Chorus: A G Now it’s rising from the ground Pre-Chorus: A/C# - D - E All I am, A/C# - D – E I surrender Chorus: D A/C# Bm7 Holy, Holy, Holy, Holy Lord G The earth is Yours and singing D F#m Bm7 Holy, Holy, Holy, Holy Lord G D The earth is Yours, The earth is Yours (lick: D F# A G, D F# A G, A G F# E D) Verse 2: Your voice it thunders The ground is shaking The mighty mountains now are trembling Creation sees You And starts composing Fields and trees They start rejoicing Pre-chorus 2: A G Now it’s rising from the ground A G/B Now it’s rising from the ground A/C# Gm (bass line: Bb D A G) Hear us crying out, hear us crying out Michael Gungor, © 2010 WorshipTogether.com Songs (ASCAP) Chorus: D A E F#m Give me faith to trust what You say D A F#m E That You’re good and Your love is great Bm D A E D-E I’m broken inside, I give You my life Verse 2: I need you to soften my heart To break me apart I need you pierce through the dark And cleanse every part of me Bridge: D A I may be weak E F#m But Your Spirit’s strong in me D A My flesh may fail F#m E But my God You never will Verse 1; Use the opening questions, the thematic concepts and discussion ideas to spice up your Bible study, Sunday School lesson, camp/retreat meeting or outreach event message. Artist: Artist: Christina Perri Imagine Dragons Justin Bieber Song: Jar of Hearts Album: LoveStrong Song: It’s Time Album: Night Visions Song: Beauty and a Beat Album: Believe By: Jeff Williamson [email protected] By: Mandy Kyes [email protected] By: Eric Gargus [email protected] Teaching Point: The God of creation has a “jar of hearts” of each of the individuals that call upon Him as Father. Teaching Point: Christians are constantly trying to fight our sinful nature. Changing our actions is difficult, but not impossible. But, Christ is unchanging, and so is His love for us. Teaching Point: The only thing you really need is to know Jesus. Opening Question: What is keeping you from taking that one step toward Jesus? Discussion: Christina Perri’s song is of heartache and hurt. How often have you given your “heart” only to have it added to a trophy collection of hearts? Opening Questions: Think of the last time you wanted to do something you knew wasn’t the right thing to do. Was making the right choice difficult? Why or why not? Are there things you want to change about yourself? What are they and why do you want to change them? Discussion: In the Bible, David questioned God, even to the “It’s Time” describes someone who comes to the point that he was not completely ready to give realization that he’s never changing who he is. Who do you count on to be there for you in times of need? Does a teenager have to be in a dating relationship to be complete? Explain. Discussion: Justin Bieber’s “Beauty and a Beat” does nothing good for his boyish image for the millions of his adoring young fans. The song is a great dance number with a great beat and some killer slap bass. The quality stops there though as the lyrics shallowly imply that completeness comes through having an incredibly sexy companion to show off to the world. Bieber opens the song by declaring; “All I need is a beauty and a beat who can make my life complete.” For her appearance in the song, Nicki Minaj injects profanity, a veiled sexual reference, and a maybe a jab at Selena Gomez before Bieber returns to his declaration of the only thing that completes him. Have you ever hung out with someone you felt made you look good? Explain. What do you think makes your life complete? What do most of your peers look for in a date? What are the main factors influencing your happiness? Do you take issue with anything in this song? Explain. Look up and discuss the how the following verses following contrast with the song: Romans 12:3-6; Philippians 2:3-4; Matthew 5:28; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8; 1 John 2:15-17 Conclusion: What makes you complete? Are you taking pride in temporary appearances and sensual desires? Although the path is difficult, the wisdom found in the Bible will help you be dependent fully on knowing Jesus. Think about the verses you just read. How do you need to respond to the message in those verses? Are you seeking to live like the song, or like the Scripture? << << Page RE:TUNED61 RE:TUNED61 Artist: Artist: Artist: Justin Timberlake Luke Bryan Macklemore with Ryan Lewis Song: Suit & Tie Album: 20/20 Song: Drunk On You Album: Tailgates and Tanlines Song: Thrift Store (Feat. Wanz) Album: The Heist By: Doug Ranck [email protected] By: Gerard Mattive [email protected] By: Kirk Moore [email protected] Teaching Point: Relationships Teaching Point: In contrast with what our culture believes about dating, God gives great examples of relationships that have a solid foundation in Him. Once our desire is set on God and we submit ourselves unto His authority adding faith, God will give you that amazing person. Teaching Point: Where is your treasure? Opening Question: In what ways does the media try to make people look too good to be real? What is the problem with this? Discussion: We are a culture full of those who are attracted to the glitz and glamor daily presented to us in a variety of ways. The constant media bombardment can leave us less than satisfied with the appearance of the opposite sex in everyday life. Those with an average appearance seem to all but fade into the woodwork. We like make-up, dressy, and “drop-dead” gorgeous/handsome. Justin Timberlake describes his night out with a girl who seems to be the dream of every guy. He says, “I can’t wait ’til I get you on the floor, goodlooking, going out so hot, just like an oven.” The writer spends time describing this guy’s infatuation with the girl using various terms to describe her and the goal of their relationship. He wants to “show you a few things about love.” God invites us to enjoy the relationships He has given us with those of the opposite sex. Friendships, dating, and even marriage are all wonderful opportunities to understand more about others and ourselves. Christ calls us to a standard of purity and respect in these relationships. We should admire the external and internal beauty of guys/girls and not just leave them at object level. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 presents the real definition of love: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not selfseeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” The lyrics of the song mention the word “it” more than once. In context, “it” seems to be taking love and making it an object. There is more to relationships than one night with a handsome/beautiful person. God offers us an eternal relationship with Him, and the privilege of living our lives with those we honor who are made in the image of God. Conclusion: In what ways are you letting physical appearance be at the center of your relationships? What is one way you can honor a person of the opposite sex? Opening Questions: How would you describe our concept of dating? What seems right, and what seems wrong about it? How does this song describe what’s going on between the guy and the girl? Discussion: In Genesis 2, God brought Eve to Adam with the goal that this relationship would grow through Him. But, our dating system provides a false foundation. Instead of building a solid relationship found only through God, we accept the false imagination of the dating scene to disguise their emptiness. The deceitful power of the person’s heart (Jeremiah 17:9), the mind is hostile against God (Romans 8:7), and the flesh (1 John 2:16) sets its eye on physical appearances. The result: the heartache from the lack of fulfillment. In Genesis 2:25 Adam and Eve were not ashamed – they built a foundation along with God to ensure a stronger relationship. Since God created us for relationships, do we submit to His authority – both eternal and earthly? Why were Adam and Eve not ashamed? What does the Bible describe the heart, mind, and flesh? Paul describes, in Romans 1:18-32, the horrific truth regarding when we suppress the truth in order to satisfy our desires. Once we exchange God’s truth and direction for a lie, then we experience the consequences, and further down into sin we go with our actions to satisfy our selfish desire. Maybe the image of us being “the bride of Christ” (Ephesians 5:22-32) might help. Submit, respect, love, self-denial, and unity gives a whole new perspective our earthly relationships. Our greatest model is Jesus Christ’s giving all that He had – even to death. He submitted His life out of love, respect, and self-denial for our benefit and to restore our original relationship with God. Conclusion: What are the differences of God’s way of building relationships verses our own or the dating scene? How can we encourage each other to build relationships with God at the center? Opening Question: What are the best clothing labels? Discussion: “Thrift Store” is a tongue-in-cheek song that pokes fun at the culture’s obsession with designer labels and overly expensive toys. It’s loaded with words that earn it an “explicit” warning. And, it’s one of the only independent artist single releases ever to hit number one on the pop charts. It also gives an excellent opportunity to talk about frugality. Twenty Dollars in My Pocket What kind of clothing collection do you think you could put together with twenty dollars? Macklemore seems to put together an endless amount of clothes he thinks are stylish and fashionable. It seems that with a little imagination, one can put together a great wardrobe without breaking the bank on designer labels. Read Matthew 6:19-24. •Is spending extravagantly on designer labels related to the idea of “where your treasure is?” •How can spending extravagantly on the finest clothes be an example of serving desire instead of serving God? •If you made a choice to spend much less on clothes by shopping for bargains and shopping at thrift shops, what do you think would be a great use for the money you saved? •What else does the song and the Bible reading make you think about? Conclusion: When the desire for the finest things becomes more important than following God’s way for your life, there’s a problem. Your friends will love you whether you have the best clothes or not. And God loves and cares for you just the way you are – no designer labels necessary. © ©2013 2013 interlÍnc / interlinc-online.com / 800.725.3300 Page >> 62 RE:TUNED Unavoidable. Pervasive. Maroon 5 Artist: Artist: Swedish House Mafia Taylor Swift Song: Daylight Album: Overexposed Song: Don’t You Worry Child Album: Until Now Song: I Knew You Were Trouble Album: By: Jessica Parrent [email protected] By: Cindy Engøy [email protected] By: Nick Williams [email protected] Teaching Point: At some point we all must say goodbye to someone we love either to death or them moving on. Teaching Point: We can trust God because He has a plan for us. Teaching Point: There are things all around us that look attractive and fun; but, many of these things can/will lead straight to Hell. Opening Questions: •We live in a world where we must let go of others due to death or a move. How do we deal with missing someone we love? •How do we deal with the memories and the pain in a way that helps us move closer to God instead of farther away? Discussion: Throughout this song, we hear: “when the daylight comes I’ll have to go.” We all know that we are only on this earth for a limited amount of time. Why then do we have such a hard time letting go of someone? Read John 11:23-26. What does this verse say about death? Read Psalm 30:5. Is mourning the loss of a loved one okay? Read John 14:1-4. In whom should we trust? What has He gone to do? What will happen to Christians when He comes back? Conclusion: As followers of Christ, we know our death is just the beginning of our life. However, it saying goodbye to someone we love is very hard to do. As the song says, “when the daylight comes I’ll have to go, but tonight I’m gonna hold you so close.” Enjoy the people in your life while they are here, love them, and hold them close. When the time comes for them to go, give them to God knowing you will soon again see them. Opening Questions: Have you ever wondered, “Why am I here? Why was I born? Is life going to get any better? Isn’t being a Christian means an easier life?”We have all had those feelings. Even people in the Bible went through depression and questioned why they were born. Discussion: All of us go through feelings of doubt, depression, and questioning God. Sometimes we think that as Christ followers we should always be happy – if we do have doubts or go through depression, then there is something wrong with our faith in God. Even friends and family who don’t have faith in God will say stuff like, “Well I thought you were a Christian? Where is your God now?” The Bible has many examples of people of faith who questioned God, experienced depression, and had doubts. Maybe these real people are in the Bible as examples for us and to let us know that we are not alone when we have these feelings. Jonah 4:1 – First, God asked Jonah to do a task for Him. Jonah fled and ended up in the belly of a great fish. God saved him and he decided to do what God wanted him to do. His task was successful, and then Jonah said, “Now, Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.” Okay, so you might be thinking, “Really dude, you did what God wanted. He blessed your ministry. Now, you want to die? What do you have to be depressed about?” Job 3:3-4. Job lost everything and his response was, “May the day of my birth perish…” Wow, talk about going through some deep depression! Read Matthew 27:46. Jesus willingly gave His life for our salvation. On the cross He cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”) Come on, this is God’s Son. If He can get question God, than I guess we all will go through those feelings sometime in our lives. Conclusion: So if we are all going to go through those feelings, what do we have to hold on to? Read Jeremiah 29:11. God says to us, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” So, don’t you worry, child! © 2013 interlÍnc / interlinc-online.com / 800.725.3300 Opening Questions: What are some things you can name that can be destructive to your life? Also, what are some things that are the “cool” thing to do at your age? Discussion: In “I Knew You Were Trouble” Taylor tells a story of falling for guy that she knew would end up being a disaster in the end. At the beginning of the music video for this song, Taylor says, “How can the devil be pulling you toward someone who looks so much like an angel when he smiles at you?” This song is about a relationship, but it is easy to see how this can relate to other areas of our lives. Even when we know that God wishes for us to avoid these things, and that we also may even know that these things can be destructive in our lives, that we still choose them. As Taylor says, “The devil can make some very unattractive things look very, very attractive (my paraphrase).” A lot of us fall into this trap, and that isn’t okay. Proverbs 14:12-13 (Message) says, There’s a way of life that looks harmless enough; look again—it leads straight to hell. Sure, those people appear to be having a good time, but all that laughter will end in heartbreak. That is definitely a fine descriptive way of explaining what will happen if we choose the world. In Daniel 1:3-16, Daniel and his comrades (Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego) have decided to forego eating from the King’s table. That menu had to have been an attractive choice as it was the same food and drink that the King was dining on. Those four men “resolved to refuse” what the King, a.k.a. the world, was offering, and chose their only option: vegetables and water. And they came out ahead of the game because they denied the world! Conclusion: We have a choice in life. We can choose a path that looks fantastic and fun right now (but that we have been warned leads to destruction), OR (and the better option, but also sometimes the harder and less fun option) we “resolve to refuse” what the world offers us. There’s no better time than now to make that decision! AD THE NIV COLLEGE DEVOTIONAL BIBLE Take on the twists and turns of college life with a 9-month devotional designed just for you.
