Building with eye on recycling
KINGSTON Building Australia has completed
construction of a new Aldi supermarket in
Newcastle’s Union Street.
The site had previously been occupied by
Earp Brothers Tiles.
Project manager for Kingston, Peter Harper,
said that despite many difficulties arising
from converting parts of the building for use as
a supermarket, the job was completed on time
and on budget.
‘‘The Aldi supermarket involved retaining
part of the two-storey older section along
Union Street and construction of a new
section to the west, creating 1500 square
metres of retail space including new loading
dock facilities,’’ Mr Harper said.
‘‘An extensive car park was created where
the older Earp Bros storage facilities once
stood.
‘‘Additional works were undertaken to
improve the public spaces along Union Street
and Arnott Street with new kerbing, footpaths
and landscaping.’’
The majority of the old warehouse was
dismantled and stored for re-erection by
Kingston.
“As part of our commitment to sustainability
we look for every opportunity to recycle or
reuse materials in the construction process.
‘‘In this instance the panels, structural steel
and fencing will be refurbished for future use
in a warehouse development that Kingston are
undertaking for themselves.
‘‘The panels were made with hollow
sections making them lighter and requiring
less material in their manufacture.
“This is another benefit towards
environmental sustainability that we
incorporated into our proposed warehouse
development,” Mr Harper said.
