A Message to Our Donors
Billings Clinic is fortunate to have so many friends who support our organization
and assist us on our journey to become a national leader in providing the best
clinical quality, patient safety, service and value. Philanthropy continues to make a
positive difference in our ability to fulfill this vision.
Our generous benefactors have varied backgrounds and experiences but a
common thread binds them all: believing in Billings Clinic’s mission and knowing
our organization is committed to working together for the future health of our
families, friends and community. Never was this commitment stronger than on
July 1, 1993, when Deaconess Medical Center and Billings Clinic formally merged.
As we celebrate our twenty-year anniversary as an integrated not-for-profit,
community-governed and physician-led organization, we reflect on the incredible
teamwork and farsighted vision of our community and physicians to create an
organization dedicated to a higher purpose in providing health care
for our region.

Mayo Clinic knowledge and expertise right here at home, so fewer patients have to travel out of our region for certain
specialized care.

Working Together and Building for the Future
Billings Clinic is constantly undergoing a thoughtful strategic planning process to achieve our vision of being a national
leader in providing the best clinical quality, patient safety, service and value for our patients. A critical part of achieving
this vision is comprehensive master facility planning.
In 2011, senior leaders, architects, physicians, nurses and staff working together conducted an in-depth evaluation of
Billings Clinic’s Medical Campus Plan. They thoroughly examined the needs of our patients, advancing medical
technology and new methods of health care delivery in light of aging facilities and inadequate space. The conversations
were difficult as our organization faces a multitude of important and worthy needs with limited resources to meet
those needs.
With the care of our patients at the forefront and the desire to improve patient care for generations to come, the Board of
Directors at Billings Clinic approved the following projects to be prioritized for completion by the year 2015:

The projected cost to build and equip these imperative projects is $42 million. Billings Clinic will use $33 million of low
interest bond proceeds, leaving a balance of $9 million. With the uncertainty in health care reform, in addition to our
routine equipment and technology needs, Billings Clinic is simply not in a financial position to borrow more than
$33 million at this time. Billings Clinic has asked Billings Clinic Foundation to raise the $9 million necessary to
complete the projects through philanthropic support.
Together, with members of our Billings Clinic family and a visionary and generous community and region, we are making
great strides in reaching our goal. We thank our donors for embracing our mission and vision, for partnering with us to
make a positive difference in the lives of our patients and their families, and for investing in our
future. It is a commitment we take very seriously, and we will be excellent stewards
of the trust and gifts placed in our hands.
Bill and Merilyn Ballard, in a quiet and unassuming manner, have improved the care for thousands of patients through their of
generosity to Billings Clinic. The Ballards’ gift of $500,000 to our new Cardiac Center, part of the Billings Clinic Expansion and
Renovation Campaign, will provide a state-of-the-art Cardiac Rehabilitation Suite specifically designed
for patients recovering from an open heart surgical procedure or heart attack. The
Ballards have not only generously given of their resources; Dr. Ballard is
the past chairman of the Billings Clinic Board of Directors and
recently chaired the 2012 Classic.

The Plan for the new Intensive Care Unit
The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is at the heart of critical
care services at Billings Clinic. Our ICU has received
national recognition for its transformative work in
evidence-based practices and patient safety
measures. The new ICU will address the challenges of
the existing ICU and support the needs of our
critically ill patients. The new ICU features:
24 private patient rooms supporting
state-of-the-art technology
Spacious family waiting areas
Satellite pharmacy to allow for quick access to
all needed drug therapies
Conference room for large family meetings, staff education and multidisciplinary team meetings
Patient rooms will have designated areas for the patient’s family allowing for unrestricted visitation. To help
minimize environmental stressors, patient rooms and gathering areas will have comfortable furnishings,
soothing colors, peaceful artwork and noise-reducing measures and materials.

Ambulatory Telemetry Unit

six phases,
the Operating
Room
expansion and
renovation will
allow for all
phases of the
surgical
experience to
take place on
the same floor.
Planning for the operating rooms includes:
13 state-of-the-art operating rooms designed with
patient safety at the forefront. All rooms will be
appropriately sized to meet the demands of
today’s technology. Special attention is being
given to the flow and efficiency of the operating
rooms with the end result being greater
patient safety.

Ambulatory
Telemetry Unit
(ATU) primarily
dedicated to the
care of cardiac
patients on the
third floor of the
building which
houses the Emergency and Trauma Center.
The new ATU will address the challenges of
the existing ATU and support the needs of
hospitalized cardiac patients. The new ATU
will feature:
29 private patient rooms, with handicap
accessible bathrooms and walk-in showers
Family gathering areas
Moving of all phases of the surgical process to one
floor from preoperative check-in and care to
recovery. This will greatly enhance the patient
experience, prevent disruption in care and
decrease presurgical waiting times.
Dedicated space for patients to engage in
physical, occupational and speech therapy
Expanded family waiting rooms, allowing for
dedicated private space for surgeons to visit with
family after surgical procedures.
Nourishment stations conveniently located
throughout the unit for 24-hour access to
nutritious snacks and beverages

of the Family Birth Center
and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
The Plan for the Inpatient Pediatric Unit
The philosophy
of the Family
Birth Center is
centered on
mother and baby
together,
supported by
family and
friends. The
expansion of the
Family Birth
Center will
include the
addition of six
family birth
suites. Birthing suites incorporate soft colors and
soothing fabrics with ample space for family and
friends. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will be able
to increase their capacity from caring for 13 babies
to 18 babies. This much needed expansion will allow
for more families to begin their first days of life’s
journey at Billings Clinic under the compassionate
and skillful guidance of our Family Birth Center staff.
Billings Clinic is planning the construction of a
pediatric inpatient unit specifically designed for
the care and comfort of our young patients.
Each room will be equipped with a sleeper sofa,
allowing parents to comfortably spend the night
at their child’s bedside. Each child’s room will be a
safe haven, locating all procedures and
treatments in a specially designed treatment
room. An “imagination” play room will offer
children much needed diversion and comfort as
they deal with the often frightening experience of
being hospitalized.

Laboratory is
an essential
component
to patient
care, and
as our
organization’s
service needs
grow, the
Laboratory
must grow to
keep pace.
Growth was
anticipated
when the
Family Birth Center wing was added in 1999,
and 3,000 square feet of shelled space is
available for the expansion. Planning and
construction for the Laboratory expansion will
take place in 2013.
The planning
process for the
clinic is in the
final stages.
Multiple
departments
are
experiencing
a shortage of
clinical space
to meet
current
demand,
let alone
accommodate
for future
growth.
The facility
planning committee is in the process of evaluating all
facility needs in the clinic with recommendations for
approval in 2013.
Classic
Classic Proceeds
On a Saturday evening in late August, Billings Clinic
Foundation and an army of dedicated volunteers
descend on downtown Billings and transform a common
street and parking lot into a chic urban oasis. Simply
known as “The Classic,” this premier fundraising event has
raised millions of dollars over the years in support of
advancing health care excellence at Billings Clinic.
Proceeds from the Classic for years 2010 through 2014
will be dedicated to construction projects that are part of
the Billings Clinic Expansion and Renovation Campaign.

A named endowment fund at Billings Clinic Foundation is an excellent way to create a permanent legacy that endorses
what matters most to you. Endowment donors have a unique opportunity to watch their gifts inspire, encourage and
create excellence today with the assurance their investment will fortify Billings Clinic and touch countless lives for

Fifty percent of annual interest earnings are available to be spent from an endowment fund to support current necessities
within their designation. The remaining fifty percent of earnings is reinvested in the specific endowment to ensure its

family of Mildred have also contributed to
this essential fund.
Together, through the Mildred Sandall
Scott Women’s Wellness Endowment and
our other partners in women’s health
programs, thousands of women have
received preventative health screenings
at Billings Clinic. Mildred’s lasting legacy
of giving women the gift of life and
good health is a fitting honor to this

A Lifetime of Philanthropy
One of the greatest
gifts a person can
leave is a legacy of
giving. It takes a
true philanthropic
spirit to make a
commitment to
help those in the
Hewes and Susan Agnew
community today,
while planning ahead to benefit future generations.
For Dr. Hewes and Susan Agnew, they made the
decision that generosity never has to end, and
together guaranteed their legacy of giving would
positively impact lives at Billings Clinic for
generations to come.
In 1972, Hewes was finishing his surgical residency
at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Surgical Residency
program in Baltimore, Maryland. Hewes and Susan
began looking out west for a smaller community
with a strong medical presence. Billings Clinic and
Deaconess Hospital were an ideal fit. Months earlier,
the hospital began an open heart surgery program,
and Hewes’ surgical expertise was a welcomed
addition. Together, Hewes and his partner
Dr. John Heizer, with cardiologists Dr. Walter Degnan,
Dr. John Burg and Dr. H. Sorenson, blazed the trail for
delivering advanced cardiac care and cardiovascular
surgery to Montana – a transformational step
forward in bringing specialized medicine to the
deserving citizens of our state.
Since arriving in Billings, the Agnews have
contributed their time, talent and philanthropic
support to many important causes within Billings
Clinic and in our community. Leading by example,
they have taught colleagues and friends the
importance of giving back, inspiring many.
Dr. Agnew officially retired in 1999; however he and
his wife have continued to be dedicated supporters
of Billings Clinic. Not only have Hewes and Susan
provided many generous gifts to Billings Clinic,
they have also created a lasting legacy through
their support of the Heizer/Agnew Cardiac Services
Endowment, which will live into perpetuity and
continue to provide a philanthropic margin of
excellence for cardiovascular services at
Billings Clinic.

Hewes and Susan have left on our organization.

challenges facing
seniors today.
Through the Harold
and Patricia Korell
Foundation, the
Korells have
partnered with
Dr. Patricia Coon,
a Billings Clinic
geriatrician
specializing in the
care of the elderly, to
optimize health care
for this special and
vulnerable group of
patients.
The Korells have invested in solutions to improve access to
quality medical care for seniors. In 2010, they purchased an
all-wheel drive van to transport elderly patients to their
medical appointments. Last year, the van completed over
3200 trips. Additional support provided technology which
enables our senior care team the ability to access Billings
Clinic medical records at the bedside of patients in nursing
homes and assisted living facilities.
The Korells recently funded a dedicated area to house our
Senior Assessment Program, including an exam room,
spacious home-like consultation room for large family
gatherings and space for our nurse navigator who specializes
in senior care. The H.G. Korell Family Suite will offer a
comforting space for seniors to undergo a thorough
assessment and allow for private space for family members to
share concerns and discuss possible treatment plans with the
care team. This beautiful and private space will also be used
by our palliative care team in discussing sensitive and
emotional issues with patients and their families.
The Korells have also gifted generously to our pediatric
cancer patient assistance fund and our Center for Breast
Health. Billings Clinic is very fortunate to have friends like
Harold and Pat, who utilize their resources to effectively
comfort others in a significant and lasting way.

The Hagans’ generous gift contributes to the health and well
being of our patients by improving the environment in which

Matching Passions to Make a Positive Difference
Over the years, Billings Clinic employees Harry Miller, MHA,
and his wife, LeAnn Larsen, RN, MHA, have been building a
lasting legacy by funding an endowment which supports a
cause they care deeply about. The LeAnn Larsen and Harry
Miller Endowment is dedicated to providing financial
assistance to nursing students who are completing their
education in Montana.
As a member of the First Interstate Bank Advisory Board,
Harry is able to maximize his contributions to the
endowment thanks to a matching gift from the First
Interstate BancSystem Foundation. This is a win, win! First

Supporting Families Through the
Difficult Journey of Childhood Cancer
There is a special group of kids at Billings Clinic known as
Kelker’s Kids. These children are the patients of Billings Clinic
pediatricians Dr. Paul Kelker and Dr. Courtney Lyle, both
board certified pediatric oncologists. Billings Clinic has been
caring for children with cancer since 1978 when Dr. Kelker
started the first pediatric oncology program in Montana.
Thanks to our many donors to the Kelker’s Kids Fund who
ensure these deserving families have the financial support
they need so they can focus on what is important – the
care of their child. The Foundation extends special thanks to
Tracy Hoen and her wonderful family and volunteers for
giving countless hours of their time, year after year, to
spearhead the annual Kelker’s Kids fundraising event. Our
appreciation is also extended to the employees of SM Energy,
led by Tyson Schwartz and Luke Studer, for generously
donating the proceeds of their Bird & Birdie Tournament to
this very worthy cause.

Through Philanthropy
Science is everywhere: curing disease, delivering profound
new technologies, driving economic growth, creating new
jobs, and helping us define and discover our place in the
universe. Each year, Billings Clinic is proud to conduct the
region’s largest science fair competition, the Science Expo,
designed to encourage critical scientific thinking skills in
children in grades 1 through 12. The Science Expo fosters
excellence in academics and encourages children to pursue
careers in science and technology.
Generous support from our sponsors and donors allows
students from across eastern Montana to participate at no
charge and compete for prizes including all-expense paid
trips for high school students to international science fair
competitions. These are truly “once in a lifetime” experiences
for the brightest students in our region to test themselves
against the best in our nation and open numerous doors for
scholarship opportunities.

Donald Twito, MD
April 25, 1944 – April 17, 2012
Sadly, Billings Clinic lost one of our
own with the sudden, unexpected
death of medical oncologist
Dr. Donald Twito in April of 2012.
Dr. Twito joined Billings Clinic in
1975 and was the first medical
oncologist to practice in the state of
Montana. He received his oncology
fellowship training at the University
of Minnesota under Dr. B.J.
Kennedy, known as the “father of
Medical Oncology.” Dr. Twito’s arrival
to Billings Clinic ushered in a new era in cancer specialty care
for the people of Montana and Wyoming by bringing
innovative new treatments and research opportunities to the
region for the very first time. Dr. Twito worked tirelessly for
37 years and was a passionate advocate of cancer research
and a generous benefactor to Billings Clinic Foundation.
