Chicago multimedia artist Willy Chyr opens the show with his off-the-rails entrance
exhibit – an intricate balloon display that, with a dash of spontaneity, walks the
line between science and art. “Instead of creating each work with the final design
in mind,” says Chyr. “I use random variations in the material
to dictate the course of the installation.”

How Do You Work?
A look at four energetic firms creating 200-square-foot spaces that challenge, or
add a new twist on, the outdated workspace
Presented by
Dubbeldam Architecture + Design Å
Led by architect Heather Dubbeldam, this multidisciplinary
Toronto studio used elements of flexibility and materiality as a
starting point for its installation. “It is bold but layered, with a
little bit of whimsy thrown in,” says Dubbeldam.
A modern work environment is all about… adaptability. The
way we work is forcing businesses to constantly evolve.
At our office, we play by… sitting at one large work surface to
spur creative dialogue. And everyone gets a turn at DJing.
Our installation is… playful.
Igloodgn Æ
Samare È
Merging commercial interior design, graphic
design and branding, this Montreal firm is led
by Anna Abbruzzo and Alain Courchesne. Their
intriguing installation evokes the “eccentric
world of an irreverent botanist,” with whimsical
tiles and book themed Fornasetti wallpaper.
A modern work environment is all about…
the mentality that we can work anywhere,
whether it be your home, an office or outdoors:
we are no longer chained to our desks.
At our office, we play by… engaging in a
ritualistic 3pm coffee break every afternoon that
recharges team members and their creative
batteries. There are no meetings, no phone and
no emails.
Our installation is… fantastic, in the truest
sense of the word: eccentric and fanciful.
This Montreal and Milan-based studio, led by Mania Bedikian,
Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte, Patrick Meirim de Barros
and Laurie Bedikian, incorporates its appreciation of cultural
craftsmanship into its installation, offering a glimpse into
the firm’s thought and design process.
A modern work environment is all about … the virtual studio.
At our office, we play by… random “hide-and-seek”
activities, spontaneous singalongs, research roadtrips and
communal lunches.
Our installation is… representational.
The exterior: Joel Loblaw É
BlackLab Ç
While the newbie studio is behind several brilliant renos and new builds across Ontario, for
their installation, principals Tony Round, Andrea Kordos, Sarah Knight and Joe Knight took
inspiration from their own recently completed office.
A modern work environment is all about… flexibility. A space’s ability to adapt to different
uses and extend its viability and lifespan is crucial.
At our office, we play by… exploring how different forms of design, including installation
art, cinematography, graphic and industrial design, can inform architecture.
Our installation is… bright.
8 / InteriorDesignShow.com
Landscape architect – and host of HGTV’s Dirty Business – Joel
Loblaw brings his studio’s strong, experimental and artisanal
approach to the exterior surroundings of How Do You Work?
with a warm palette of logs, weathering steel and plants.
A modern work environment is all about… warmth. It might be
as simple as having a window nearby.
At our office, we play by… experimenting with different
materials and techniques. As designers we are lucky that our
work is play.
The How Do You Work? exterior is… full of bright colours and
fun hidden elements.

Shop Talk
A who’s who primer of this year’s illuminating Trade Talk lineup, sponsored
by Azure magazine
Trade Day Presented by
Philippe Malouin – 11AM Å
Who: The Canadian-born, U.K.-based industrial
designer takes an experimental approach
to furniture and products, borrowing from midcentury modernism for projects with such
high-profile brands as W Hotels and Campeggi.
What: Malouin’s diverse works range from
“light paintings,” made of spinning rows of
Swarovski crystals backlit by LEDs, to the
Gridlock 2 collection of handmade brass and
concrete furniture, inspired by brutalism.
Why: Encouraging us to see the creative process
from a new perspective, Malouin will use
examples of his own work alongside those of
designers he admires.
Oki Sato – 3PM Ç
Who: The creative mind behind Nendo, one of the most prolific studios now
working, Sato has caught the attention of the global design world with
his quirky and minimalist – yet brilliantly pragmatic – concepts and interiors.
What: A sampling of Nendo's recent projects includes tableware made
from old Coca-Cola bottles, a pop-up Starbucks, Bluetooth devices for
Logitech, Noon watches, Gandia Blasco rugs and Hermès window displays.
Why: The show's International Guest of Honour will offer a glimpse into
his diverse practice and discuss projects that are on-the-boards.
4 / InteriorDesignShow.com
Jerszy Seymour – 1PM Ç
Who: The Berlin designer merges brilliant technical skill and
innovative technology into playful, sometimes raunchy projects.
What: While Seymour’s earlier work consisted of such
installations as a life-sized Ford Escort made of foam and
surrounded by projected images of copulating cockroaches,
more recent projects include a collection of colourful Amateur
Master seating in biodegradable wax, and collaborations
with Magis, Vitra, Hermès, Swatch and others.
Why: Seymour’s presentation will cover everything from
his unique process to “speculation on amateur society, dirty
art, blood on rocks and sweaty horizons.”
Jürgen Mayer H. – 5PM Ç
Who: The built environment meets biology, technology and
botany in this German architect’s practice.
What: Mayer’s bulbous buildings are eye-popping and
inspiring. Recent examples range from the concrete-clad police
station in Mestia, Georgia, which looks as though it’s melting
to the ground, to the expansive (and controversial) latticed wood
canopy in a redeveloping neighbhourhood in Seville, Spain.
Why: Mayer’s talk promises to challenge traditional concepts of
the built form through examples of recent work. “We want
to create curiosity and surprise for the potential of a building and
its context,” he says.

emerging designers in Prototype and Studio North and hundreds of exhibitors
