My Dear People,
Following the creation of the human race, Almighty God created the institution
of marriage. He did so for the procreation of the human race and for the expression
of love and support between a man and a woman. Jesus Christ raised this union to
the dignity of being a sacrament of His Church and declared "for this reason, a man
shall leave his father and mother and cling unto his wife and the two shall become
one flesh." (Matthew 19:5) Christ clearly taught that marriage is an unbreakable
bond between one man and one woman. The Church, true to her instruction of her
Master, has repeated His teaching faithfully for 2,000 years.
As you know, in June the U.S. Supreme Court made a decision to change that
holy and divine definition of marriage throughout the entire United States. This new
definition allows for two persons of the same sex to enter into a so-called marriage.
Such unions are forbidden by the law of God and are grievously sinful.
Our Holy Mother the Church teaches that every person has the joyful dignity of
being a son or daughter of God. We are all created in His divine image. The Church
also teaches that God wills the eternal happiness of all His children, no matter what
sexual attraction they may experience. Nevertheless, the attraction that one might
feel to a member of the same sex does not justify inappropriate sexual actions, it does
not change God's definition of marriage, nor does it lead to the dignity of individuals
or to their eternal salvation. Such persons are called to experience friendships that
are chaste.
May the Holy Family, Jesus, Mary
and Joseph, bless you as you strive
to obey the law of God and may they
protect all those who embraces, or
will seek to embrace, the sacrament of
holy matrimony.
Faithfully and devotedly yours in Christ,

Journey of Faith
Gail Schultebrandt, left of
Bishop Herbert Bevard in blue.
I
Journey of Miss Gail Schultebrandt
f you’ve been to Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral, you may have noticed the beautiful
flowers on the three alters. You might know that these arrangements — carefully
set, watered, and changed weekly — are the result of the Ministry of Flowers, a
the work of a group of people dedicated to the beautification of the church. What you
might not know is that for one of them, Gail Schulterbrandt, this ministry is a link in a
long chain of family service to the Cathedral going back more than 200 years.
Gail Schulterbrandt’s
Catholic faith is strongly
rooted at the Cathedral of
Sts. Peter and Paul. “For
hundreds of years,” she
said, “my ancestors on
St. Thomas were always
devout Catholics. They
passed down through six generations on St.
Thomas their love of God.” Gail’s mother,
who is now 94 years old, told Gail that her
grandmother, Anita Schulterbrandt, who
was born in the 1800s, attended Mass at
Sts. Peter and Paul every day of her life.
The Schulterbrandt family traces its roots
in Charlotte Amalie back to the 1770s,
when the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul was
established on St. Thomas.
Miss Schulterbrandt was born in St.
Thomas and grew up on St. Croix, and
was educated in Catholic schools. (She
was a member of the first graduating class
of St. Joseph High School in 1965.) After
going to college in Terra Haute, Indiana,
she went on to graduate studies in
16
Nutrition at Cornell’s School of Medicine
in New York City. She then returned to
the Virgin Islands where she worked for
many years as a nutritionist and a writer,
penning the column “Today’s Nutrition
Topics” for the Virgin Islands Daily News.
Her faith is clearly an important part
of her life, both in good times and in bad.
“One experience I had was the loss of my
husband, Police Sergeant Romeo Rivera,
at a young age,” Miss Schulterbrandt said.
“He died unexpectedly, and that was very
difficult for me.” She had to lean on her
family and friends, and grew closer to Jesus
during this time. Miss Schulterbrandt also
describes joyful moments where her faith
was present, such as the ordination of one
of her cousins, Henrique Schulterbrandt,
to the priesthood and her recent return to
St. Joseph High School as part of the 50th
anniversary of her graduation. “It was a
special spiritual experience,” she said, “that
God spared my life to return to my school
50 years later. Not everybody lived that
long, you know!”
The Catholic Islander / September 2015 / www.catholicvi.com
Today, Miss Schulterbrandt is retired
from her work as a nutritionist for
the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
She cares for her mother, Mrs. Leonia
Schulterbrandt, who is 94 years old, and
remains very involved in the life of the
Cathedral, volunteering her time with the
flower ministry, as a lector, and serving
on the restoration committee. She can be
seen leading tours of the Cathedral for
off- island visitors and local guests. Her
deep interest in history and native Virgin
Island culture has led her to discover
many interesting facts and anecdotes
about the Cathedral, which she wrote in a
booklet for the first Keys and Sword Gala
in 2010.
Priests and religious guests of the
bishop are frequently hosted by Miss
Schulterbrandt on tours of historic native
Virgin Island homes, in Kongens Quarter,
the oldest neighborhood on St. Thomas.
As she works each week to beautify
the church she is conscious of the fact
that this special building is the same
place where generations of her ancestors
were baptized, worshipped, married, and
had their funerals. Through all this, Gail
Schulterbrandt knows that Sts. Peter and
Paul is more than just an historic building
— it is a sacred space where she continues
to encounter Jesus every week, and where
she and the Charlotte Amalie community
gathers to worship God and deepen the
faith that
connects
them to those
who came
before, and
those who
will come
after.
