“In addition to the groundbreaking SIGGRAPH perennials
like rendering, visual effects, and
animation techniques, this year
you can also learn about the new
entertainment 3D ventures on the
Web and in the gaming industry.
In the best SIGGRAPH tradition,
this year’s conference is going
where no other conference has
gone before!”
Isaac Kerlow
The Walt Disney Company
“Unlike other conventions,
SIGGRAPH has a history of
being a conference of ideas as
well as an exhibition space
for technology.”
“It’s not just a computer show
anymore. It’s a unique world
show, a major mass-media,
center-of-it-all kind of thing.”
Shoot Magazine
The Threshold.com
“Emerging Technologies is the
one place in the world where new
ideas in interactive technologies
are presented, played with, and
discussed by the research
community. That’s where you
will experience today what you
will be using to interact with
computers five years from now.”
“SIGGRAPH has a lot to offer
3D professionals. It continues to
dazzle and educate attendees and
exhibitors alike while keeping
pace with the evolving needs
of its industry.”
Larry Kassonoff
“This is the in place to be if you
want to dive into the virtual world
of what could be, what is, and
what ought to be if a computergenerated picture is to make
sense of the gazillion data points
in the real world.”
Electronic Engineering Times

Claudio Pinhanez

Conference
23-28 July The worldwide
computer graphics community convenes in
New Orleans. All the ideas that inspire the
21st century’s digital visions. All the people
who create and apply those ideas. All the
technologies that enable media convergence,
3D adventures, revolutionary tools, and
advanced human-machine collaboration.
And you.
25-27 July High-tech,
hands-on displays and demos. Over
300 exhibitors from five continents.
In Startup Park: small, first-time
exhibitors that could be the stars of
the Exhibition at SIGGRAPH 2005.
All the latest computer graphics and
interactive techniques hardware,
software, and services.
And you.
Ex hibition
“For years, SIGGRAPH has
combined art, science, business,
and education to create an electric
and vital community.”
Ed Catmull
Pixar Animation Studios
“On the SIGGRAPH trade floor, it
is not unusual to see tenured computer scientists ogling technical
demonstrations by special effects
studios. At its heart, SIGGRAPH
has always been a shrine to skill.”
The New York Times
“This is SIGGRAPH...where
computer and visual arts collide.”
CNN
“SIGGRAPH is a show of hard
choices and challenged synapses,
and we can hardly wait until
next year.”
Silicon Graphics World
“Go to SIGGRAPH 2000!
The visual effects fakery looks
real, and the real science looks ...
well, fake. It’s cool! You’ll learn
a ton, make important industry
contacts while partying, and see
what’s coming down the road
next. Get ahead of the curve, get
out of the way, or get run over!”
Joan Staveley
Faust Logic Inc.
“SIGGRAPH has always been
where the ‘wow’ is. If you go, you
will see where the leading edge of
people’s imagination is.”
John Warnock
Adobe Systems, Inc.
"The two companies could hardly
be more different. One is a multinational corporation’s Bostonbased think tank, the other a West
LA entertainment startup. Yet both
come to SIGGRAPH with technologies that bring us closer to what
some call the Holy Grail of
computer-generated imagery: the
digital actor."

The Human-Machine Merger:
Why We Will Spend Most of our Time in
Virtual Reality in the 21st Century vr
O
Ray Kurzweil, author of “The Age of Spiritual Machines:
When Computers Exceed Human Intelligence”
(Penguin 1999) and recipient of a 1999 National
Medal of Technology, delivers the SIGGRAPH 2000
keynote address. Kurzweil has worked at the leading edge
of artificial intelligence for more than 30 years, with firsts
in speech and character recognition, optical scanning
systems, music and speech synthesis, and automated
investment decisions. His most recent work explores
the potential of human-machine hybrids.
Academic and corporate research
results from the world’s leading
computer graphics scientists
and engineers. Papers are selected
by an international jury of the
community’s most respected
researchers for presentation in
three categories: research, system,
and alternate. For a complete list
of Papers, see page 32.
Immediately before the keynote address, SIGGRAPH
presents the 2000 Computer Graphics Achievement
Award and the SIGGRAPH Outstanding Service Award.

demos of their products
and services to present
two-hour tutorials, panel
discussions, or hands-on
instruction. All Exhibitor
Forums are presented in
a theater-style setting on
the exhibition floor.

Visions for the Future of 3D
Moderator: Chris Tome
3D Download begins with a panel of experts
from the hardware, software, educational,
and animation communities speculating,
pontificating, and elaborating on the tools
they’re creating and using, and what they
see in the next 20 years for 3D graphics professionals. Come prepared with your questions
for a lively Q & A following the presentation.
Part I, 1 – 3 pm
Part II, 4 – 6 pm
Animation Production A-Z
The next segment of 3D Download surveys
animation production, from A-Z. A team of
motion picture special effects artists informs,
dazzles, and entertains you while creating an
animated production. They take the concepts
through all phases of production. The first two
hours focus on issues such as conceptualizing
and storyboarding, and move on to animatics
and other pre-production issues. Following a
one-hour break, the final segment focuses on
bluescreening, compositing, digital characters,
and screening of the final project.

3D Modeling With form.Z
Dynamic Digital Video Creation
Experience the power of 3D modeling with
form.Z, the versatile solid and surface modeler
that allows complete control over the creative
process in 3D design. This session shows how
to design directly in 3D or 2D, using numeric or
graphic input, moving effortlessly back and
forth between drafting, modeling, rendering,
and animation.
Learn how to create dynamic digital video
productions on tight deadlines and small
budgets. Integrate audio and video editing,
compositing, animation, and special effects for
maximum impact. Deliver on tape, DVD, CD, and
the Web. Sponsored by Matrox, the makers of
the DigiSuite and RT2000 realtime editing
platforms.
Attendees who complete this session will be
able to grow a model from simple lines to
complex surfaces, or to true solids with a few
quick clicks, Boolean them to generate complex
composite objects, create curved surfaces from
a variety of splines, including NURBS and
Coons patches, and dynamically sculpt and
reshape them using a variety of deformations
to twist, bulge, or bend them, as you slip
effortlessly between 2D and 3D views.
The session concludes with a question-andanswer period.

Side Effects Software
Procedural Animation Workshop
Procedural (non-linear) animation is one of the
hottest industry trends, and Houdini technology
is the leading procedural animation tool. Ray
Corbett, Education and Training Manager at
Side Effects Software presents a Houdini 4.0
workshop that demonstrates the advantages of
procedural animation for creating stunning
effects, detailed environments, and complex
characters. Specific topics include: procedural
workflow, procedural particle systems, and
non-destructive motion editing.

own instant multi-user community in 3D.
blaxxun interactive, Inc. also shows compelling
examples of multi-user applications built on its
technology platform, including Simsala Grimm
and Advopolis.
Topics include: creation of virtual worlds,
creating 3D online communities, e-commerce,
and 3D applications.
Topics include: conceptualization, previsualization, storyboarding, 2D and 3D modeling,
rendering, lighting, animation, compositing,

Areas of Interest
SIGGRAPH 2000 programs capture five broad areas of interest. In this publication, symbols identify which Courses,
Papers, Panels, and Educators Program sessions are associated with these areas of interest. Sketches & Applications
also include area of interest content. See the Program & Buyer’s Guide and the SIGGRAPH 2000 Web site after
