Our reputation and success is built on our
experience: five decades of professional Spanish
language teaching in small classes.
In Spain, choose cosmopolitan Madrid, the
university city of Salamanca, sunny Alicante or
El Puerto de Santa Maria, where you’ll find the
best beaches of Andalusia. Better still, combine all
four! The beautiful city of Cuenca in Ecuador is a
favourite destination for travellers to one of Latin
America’s safest countries.

We have short and long-term Spanish courses for
all language levels. In addition to general Spanish
classes, we prepare students for internationally

Lessons
Bildungsurlaub
Lessons last 45 minutes and are normally in blocks
of two. Punctuality, classroom participation and
homework are essential to your success. Groups
are small - there are never more than nine students
and the number is lower in many courses. Every
course includes Spanish/Latin American Culture
four times a week.
All Estudio Sampere Spanish courses of 30 lessons per
week are recognised in Germany by the “Bildungsurlaub”
schemes.
Teaching and materials
All our teachers hold a college degree or diploma,
and are chosen for their enthusiasm, commitment
and team spirit. Family is important at Estudio
Sampere, and many of our teachers have been
with us for years. The school director organizes the
groups and supervises your individual progress. All
course materials are included in your fees and are
yours to keep after the course, but please bring
your own pocket dictionary.
Language levels
Our eight language levels range from beginner to
proficient. Your level is assessed on arrival to
ensure you are placed in the right class. If you
have chosen a specialised or individual course, this
helps us to design or fine-tune your programme.
End-of-course certificate
Every student who attends at least 90% of their
classes and meets the requirements of each level
receives a certificate showing the length of course
and level of Spanish achieved.
Examinations
The three official Diplomas in Spanish as a Foreign
Language (DELE) - Inicial, Intermedio and Superior
- are awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Education
and the Cervantes Institute. The examinations are
held in May, August and November in Madrid,
Salamanca, Alicante and Cádiz, near El Puerto.
Estudio Sampere students have always achieved
excellent results. Dates 2008: May 23, August 22
(only in Madrid and Alicante) and November 21.
Many US universities accept Estudio Sampere credits for
studies completed at our schools in Spain and Ecuador.
University placement
Estudio Sampere helps students planning to study at
a Spanish university. Eligible students must meet the
requirements of the private or public universities of
Madrid or other regions. Contact us for more
information.
The Sampere seal of quality
Our commitment to quality is a key factor in our
long-lasting success. Our staff are professionally
qualified and trained. Our teaching is modern,
communicative and uses leading course books and
authentic materials in different media. The school

Curso Intensivo
Intensive Course
Intensive Course
Intensive Plus
The Intensive Course is a core programme of 20
lessons of Spanish language per week, which
develops and improves your listening, speaking,
reading and writing skills. You learn Spanish grammar
and practise it in real-life communicative situations,
using newspapers, magazines, audio-visual materials
and course books. The Intensive Course is offered at
all eight levels. The maximum class size varies from
school to school - please check the individual
destination pages in this brochure.
Offered in all Sampere schools throughout the year,
Intensive Plus is ideal for improving a specific language
skill or area. It combines the 20-lesson Intensive Course
with 5 or 10 individual lessons per week to make a
25 or 30-lesson programme. In the individual lessons, you
can work on your spoken or written Spanish, specific
terminology, business language, examination preparation or
any other special area of interest. The Intensive Plus Course
is recognised by the German Bildungsurlaub schemes.

Short Courses
Short Intensive Courses from 1 to 8 weeks start
almost every Monday of the year in all five Sampere
schools.
Long Term Courses
The “Español para Siempre” courses are the perfect
choice for students who want to make significant and
lasting progress by studying Spanish in Spain for a
longer period. The attractively priced courses can be
booked for 9 to 48 weeks. They start almost every
Monday of the year in all four Sampere schools in
Spain.
Long-term courses provide an excellent combination
of language and cultural immersion through class
tuition and day-today living in Spain.
You can divide your course between Sampere schools
and experience life in different regions of Spain.
The Long Term Intensive Course programme includes
DELE examination preparation in the period before
each of the three examination dates.
Why not study at two, three or even all four of the Sampere
schools in Spain? The minimum duration for this combination
course is two weeks. Moving on the next Sampere school is
easy, because the curriculum, teaching method and materials
are the same in all our schools in Spain. This course should
be booked in advance. However, you can change to this
course after your arrival in Spain, if availability and
accommodation permit.
DELE Course
Our preparatory courses for the official DELE examinations
in Spanish as a foreign language take place before the
examination dates in May, August and November. The course
lasts five or ten weeks (four in August) and develops all your
Spanish language skills, with particular focus on the
internationally recognised examinations. The 2008
examination dates are May 23, August 22 (Madrid and
Alicante only) and November 21. Registration for the
examination is not included in the course price.
You can prepare for the Inicial and Intermedio Diplomas in all
four Sampere schools in Spain. Preparation for the Superior
is offered in Madrid only.

Alojamiento
Living and Studying in Spain
Good, comfortable, welcoming accommodation makes
all the difference to your Spanish studies in Ecuador or
Spain. We understand this and work hard to give you
the best choice of accommodation in all five
destinations.
Estudio Sampere inspects all its accommodation and
selects it for its good value, welcome, cleanliness,
reliability, facilities and location. In a Spanish family,
you can practise the language and experience modern
Spanish life and culture. We also provide student
rooms, apartments and hotels for people who want a
more independent lifestyle.
General information
Unless you request otherwise, your accommodation is
booked from the Sunday before the course and ends
on the Saturday after the course. We charge for any
extra nights, which must be requested in advance.
A booking of three or more extra days is charged as
an extra week (except hotels).
Estudio Sampere cannot be held responsible for
refunds arising from cancellation or changes to
accommodation. See the section on changes to
family accommodation. The separate dates and
prices list contains the accommodation prices and
full conditions.
Please include all special dietary requirements,
allergies, smoker/non-smoker and any other
preferences on the registration form.
Living in a private Spanish home
Homestay or family accommodation is the most
popular choice in all five Sampere destinations.
You live with a host family, sharing meals and
facilities and practising your Spanish in a traditional
and friendly environment.
Before you arrive
We require your arrival information (flight or train time) in order to
ensure that your family is at home to greet you. You should call,
fax or email this information to Estudio Sampere at least one week
in advance, or to your family directly five days in advance.
We require complete information to place you with a compatible
family: special dietary requirements, allergies, smoking habits, age
and choice of meal plan. When your accommodation booking is
confirmed, you will receive a description of the family in English.
Arrival
Families are not required to pick you up from the airport.
You can book an airport transfer through Estudio Sampere.
You must arrive at the family by 11 o’clock at night.
Location
Most of our families are located not far from the school. Walking
distance is usually 20-25 minutes. Public transport (subway or
bus) normally takes about 15 minutes. In Madrid, a journey of
30 minutes on public transport is possible.
Minimum stay
The minimum stay in a family is one week. You can request extra
nights at a supplement. Three or more extra nights are treated as
an extra week.
Room type
Most students book a single room. Students under 25 years can
book double rooms. Two people travelling together may request a
double room.
10
Meals
Breakfast is a light meal in Spain, consisting of coffee and biscuits or
bread. Lunch is the main meal for many Spaniards and is taken between
1.30 and 3pm. Dinner is usually tortilla, cold meats, salads, sandwiches,
etc., and is taken between 8 and 10pm.
The following meal plans are possible in family accommodation:
• Half-board: breakfast and dinner, Monday to Friday and all meals on
weekends.
• Full-board: breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days per week (only in Madrid.)
Changing your family
If you are not happy with your family, speak to the school director in your
first week. We will offer you three alternative families, which you can visit
before choosing one. We do not charge a fee for changing families in the
first week.
Student rooms
Renting a student room gives you a more independent
lifestyle. You share an apartment with two to four other
people, usually other Sampere students, with whom you
also share certain expenses and the household tasks.
You have a private and basic room (bed, table, closet,
lamps, window). The kitchen, living room and bathroom are
communal. You pay small expenses in the apartment such as
gas, soap, cleaning material, etc. Together you are responsible
for keeping the apartment clean.
Before your arrive
Arrival is on Sunday and departure on Saturday. There is a daily extra
charge for early arrivals or late departures, which must be requested in
advance. You will be given the name and telephone number of the owner
of the apartment before your departure.
Arrival
You receive your keys from the owner on Sunday afternoon. In some cases,
the owner requires a deposit of 50 to 100 euros. The owner will refund you
this deposit at the end of your stay, provided all items in the apartment are
in the same condition.
Location
Distance from the school varies depending on the destination. In Madrid,
it can be up to 40 minutes on public transport. In the other cities, it is
walking distance in most cases.
Minimum stay
The minimum stay in a student room is 1 week. We advise long-term
students to book the first four weeks before arrival. Once in Spain, you
can extend the rental period.
Room type
Most students book single rooms. Two people travelling together may
request a double room.
Changing student rooms
Student rooms must be booked in advance for a period of at least one
week. Partial refunds cannot be guaranteed and are not the responsibility
of Estudio Sampere. We advise long term students to book the first four
weeks only. Once in Spain, you can extend your stay at the apartment or
change accommodation if you wish.
Apartments are available for individuals or two
people booking together. Our studios have one or
two beds, a fully equipped bathroom with towels,
kitchenette with refrigerator and other services for
an enjoyable and comfortable stay.
Before you arrive
The address of the apartment is provided with your course
confirmation and invoice. At this time you will also receive
the telephone number of the key holder. You should contact
this person a few days before arrival to confirm your arrival
time, which should be from early afternoon until 11pm. on
Sunday. Estudio Sampere is not responsible for any
expenses arising from late arrivals, changes of plan or
failure to contact the key holder.
Location
The studios are within walking distance of the school.
Minimum stay
The minimum stay is 1 week.
Changing apartments
Apartments must be booked in advance for a period of at
least one week. Partial refunds cannot be guaranteed and
are not the responsibility of Estudio Sampere.
Hotels and hostels
Estudio Sampere can recommend hotels and
hostels for different budgets in all five destinations.
The hotels are located close to the schools. We
have worked with our hotels for many years and
have special rates in most of them.
Before you arrive
When we confirm your hotel, you can choose whether to
settle your bill directly with the hotel or we can add it to your
invoice.
Prices
Estudio Sampere cannot be held responsible for any
increases that arise due to a change of room or fluctuations
of rates during peak or off-season.

You will hear some “madrileños” proudly say, “from Madrid to
Heaven”. Perhaps they are exaggerating “un poquito”, but
Madrid is certainly a charming and seductive city.
The Salamanca district, a bustling area of restaurants, bars,
tapas bars and stores, also has the best shopping in the city.
Exploring the city after school reveals much more.
Madrid’s museums are world-class: the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza,
the Royal Palace and the National Archaeological Museum are
only the most famous.
Culturally, Madrid thrives, with many theatres and cinemas, a
concert hall, music clubs and art galleries. Madrid is the birthplace
of “la marcha”, the intense nightlife of the madrileños. The city
centre is filled with all kinds of clubs for dancing, socialising and
people-watching right through the night.
Madrid is a mixture of century-old traditions and modern
metropolis, well reflected in the films of Pedro Almodovar.
Madrid has always captivated creative people: Hemingway,
Francis Bacon, Ava Gardner and Miles Davis have all fallen in
love with the Spanish capital.
Madrid lies at the geographical centre of Spain at an altitude
of 600 m and has a dry continental climate. In summer,
temperatures can reach 35 Celsius, while in winter, the
temperature can occasionally drop below freezing at night.
Thanks to the dry climate, the heat in Madrid is quite bearable.
Madrid has excellent transport links with the rest of Spain,
making it the perfect base from which to explore other regions.

Salamanca is Spain’s most prestigious university town and home
to its oldest university. Hundreds of young Spaniards study here
from October to June.
Salamanca life centres around Plaza Mayor, a beautiful square
surrounded by bars, restaurants and shops.
Everything in this small town is within walking distance: beautiful
churches, ancient streets, bars, restaurants and much more.
Segovia, Burgos, Santiago de Compostela, Leon and Madrid are
all within easy reach.
The climate is continental, with chilly winters and sunny summers.

Alicante is the pearl of the Mediterranean, enjoying a wonderful
climate all year round. Its beaches win Blue Flag Awards from the
EU every year and Postiguet Beach is even located in the very
centre of the city.
The area, inhabited well before the Romans, plays a vital role in
the modern Spanish economy. It is a popular tourist region, and
Alicante International Airport has excellent links with many
European cities.
With 500,000 inhabitants, Alicante is a medium-sized city with a
cultural life, a young and dynamic university, and a booming
economy. You will also find here century-old traditions like the
San Juan Festivities or the “Moors and Christians” celebrations,
a revival of the “Reconquista” battles.
The Spanish spoken here has no special accent, unlike
Barcelona where Catalan becomes dominant.

Sampere El Puerto
Looking out across the Atlantic Ocean from the Bay of Cádiz,
El Puerto de Santa María is an Andalusian town set among
beautiful beaches bathed in sunshine for 300 days a year.
Its position on the “Coast of Light” (Costa de la Luz) and its
Mediterranean climate make it a popular holiday destination for
Spaniards. The surrounding region is famous for its “vino de Jerez”
sherry, its mountains with their picturesque white-washed villages,
its seafood cuisine, and best of all, the exuberant spirit of the
Andalusian people so evident in the carnival, Holy Week, fairs,
flamenco and traditional singing and dancing.

ECUADOR
Ecuador
Ecuador is the smallest of the Andean countries. The 283,000 square kilometres that make up Ecuador contain the typical charms and contrasts of Latin America.
Ecuador is divided into four very different regions, most of which can be reached in a single day’s journey.
Dominated by magnificent volcanoes like Cotopaxi (5,800 m.), the spirit of “La Sierra” comes alive in the Indian markets and cities of Quito and Cuenca,
which still preserve their colonial atmosphere. Majestic Andean valleys make up “La Sierra”, which enjoys spring-like weather all year round at an average
altitude of 2,400 m.
“La Costa” is tropical, with a dry season from May to December and a wet season from January to April. It has fine beaches and fishing villages bathed in
equatorial sunshine, warm seas, and all the “samba” and the heat of the tropics.
“El Oriente” is the name given to the rain forest of the Amazon, where the rain is constant. Travel to the Amazon forest is easier in Ecuador than in any
other country, partly because distances are shorter and transport links better.
“Las Galapagos” have a special microclimate. These famous islands contain remarkable wildlife - iguanas, sea lions, pelicans and other exotic creatures - that
show no fear of human presence.
Travelling through Ecuador is a unique experience that carries no special risks for individual travellers. Prices are cheap, infrastructures are acceptable, and the
people of Ecuador are charming and hospitable.
Arrival and departure in Ecuador
To reach Cuenca from abroad, you must fly into Quito or Guayaquil. Many airlines fly from Europe and the US to Quito or Guayaquil at reasonable prices.
The Quito or Guayaquil/Cuenca ticket must be purchased in Ecuador and the best day for arrival in Quito or Guayaquil is Saturday, since it is not always
possible to connect with a Cuenca flight on the same day.
Quito or Guayaquil/Cuenca transfer service
Estudio Sampere Cuenca offers a transfer service from Quito or Guayaquil
to Cuenca. This includes:
• Meeting on arrival at Quito or Guayaquil Airport by Sampere staff.
• Transfer to local hotel.
• Single room at a comfortable hotel with breakfast and taxes included.
• Meeting on Sunday and transportation to Quito or Guayaquil Airport.
• Check-in at domestic flight terminal.
• Quito or Guayaquil/Cuenca ticket.
• Meeting on arrival at Cuenca Airport.
• Transfer to your accommodation.

Travelling in Ecuador
It is worth taking some time to explore Ecuador. Almost all of our
students spend several days or weeks travelling through the
Ecuadorian sierras, jungles and beaches after their course.
The Ecuadorians are friendly and hospitable, and a network of
buses connects the country, taking adventurous travellers to exotic
and fascinating places. For a few dollars you can find a room in
a simple and clean hotel or hostel.
Sampere Cuenca will be happy to help you plan your trip.
Galapagos is a dream come true for any nature lover. Excursions to
the Galapagos are expensive and prices, including air fare, and
accommodation start at 800 US$ (4 days/3 nights).

Cuenca is the cultural capital of Ecuador and its third largest city.
It is also Ecuador’s best-kept secret.
Cuenca and its surrounding region are rich in history, with a
colonial atmosphere that has survived thanks to years of almost
complete isolation. Cuenca is a city of fascinating contrasts:
two universities, museums and art galleries stand alongside
Indian markets rarely visited by foreigners. Exploring this
delightful Latin American city and getting to know its friendly
people will make you want to stay forever...

the address of your accommodation and a student
handbook with detailed information in English, German or
Spanish. The student handbook is produced every year to
help you to travel to and live in Spain or Ecuador. It
includes information about meals, money, climate, do’s and
don’ts, airports, maps and emergency telephone numbers.
Please read it carefully and keep it during your stay.

Visas
Visas for Spain
European Union citizens (+ Norway, Iceland and CH)
do not need a visa and can enter Spain with an
identification card or valid passport.
• Citizens from Canada, Japan, Korea, New Zealand,
and the USA, among others, do not need a visa if
they plan to study and stay in Spain less than 90 days.
Please check with the nearest Spanish Embassy or
Consulate. Nationals of these countries who wish to
study for more than 90 days require a “Visado de
Estudios”.
You must obtain your Student Visa from the Spanish
Embassy or Consulate before you leave your country.
• Students who need a visa to study in Spain should
apply very early. It may take several weeks to
complete the visa application procedure.
• Important: We require a deposit of 500 Euros before
we can process the confirmation documents needed
for the visa application. This deposit is deducted from
your final invoice. If your visa application is refused by
the Spanish Embassy or Consulate, we will refund the
deposit and any other paid fees after deducting an
administrative charge of 50 Euros, provided we
receive the refusal letter from the Spanish Embassy
or Consulate.
Visas for Ecuador
• Citizens from Canada, European Union, Japan, Korea,
New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland and the USA, among
many others do not need a Visa if they plan to study and
stay in Ecuador less 90 days. They will receive on arrival
a permit to stay up to 90 days with a valid passport.
If citizens from these countries wish to study for more
than 90 days, they can extend the visa, for 90 more
days, once in Cuenca.
