Maidstone council’s new offices in
King Street, Maidstone are being
built by a ‘considerate
constructor’ following best
practice in consideration towards
the public, the environment and the workforce.
Passers-by can see large posters setting out a code of
practice and a telephone number for the independent
resolution of any complaints about the construction.
Site monitors give advice on how the site managers can
improve the relationship with those who live or work near
the site. They help to make sure that the site is well
maintained for site workers and to reduce any negative
environmental impact.
Not every site is covered by the scheme. If you are
inconvenienced by a site which is not in the scheme or if
you are concerned about site safety, help could be at hand
on one of these numbers:

services and a new Gateway, provided in partnership with
KCC, will provide access to county council services and
many other services.
The council will rent the new offices from the Mall
Chequers, Maidstone - surrendering leases on some of its
existing offices and selling the freehold of others in order
to afford the move.

St John’s
cleans up
Year six pupils from St. John’s
Primary School produced leaflets
about keeping Maidstone clean and
tidy following a visit from Alison
Sollis, Maidstone council’s
environmental education officer.
They learnt about the importance
of reducing domestic waste and
the need to recycle.
Captain Clean was so impressed
with their work, that he made a
special appearance to present Ben
O’Donnell, Savannah Kuypers, Peter
Cooper and Daniel Redman with
special certificates and goody bags.
Operation Othello
When you’re young summer
holidays never seem to end but
sadly anti social behaviour can
increase at this time of year and
the holidays can’t end too soon
for some other people.
That’s why Maidstone Borough
Council is funding extra Police
patrols in the town’s parks and
open spaces throughout the
summer holidays.
Operation Othello is a Maidstone
council and Kent Police
partnership to combat the anti
social behaviour that has
sometimes occurred in the past.
Electoral registration
It’s time again to register to vote.
The annual canvass is underway
and every home should receive a
form by 27 August.
This year you can reply by post or
phone and for the first time by the
internet. So don’t delay, make sure
you keep your right to vote.
Your views on voting
How easy is it to vote in your ward?
What do you think about your
polling station? We want to know
your views, as part of a national
review of polling districts, places
and stations. Consultation ends on
10 September. Send your
comments to Registration Services,

Maidstone, Kent, ME16 8HR,

Maidstone Mela – bringing cultures together
This year’s Maidstone Mela will be another celebration of music, food and
dance. It will feature groups representing cultures from across the World.
All of the groups represent people from the borough such as the Nepalese
community group, which has strong links with the Ghurkha regiment in the
town.
The number of Nepalese families in Maidstone has risen to around 250,
after the government granted Ghurkha families permanent residence two
years ago. The group is planning to put on feasts and social and fundraising events throughout the year, including Dashera, one of the most
important festivals in the Nepalese calendar.
Dinesh Khadka, who helps with the organisation of the
Mela, thinks Maidstone is a great town in which to live:
“I love the wide range of activities and the people. The
Mela is a great way to bring together all the different
communities within the town.”
Find out more about the Nepalese community and
others at the Maidstone Mela at Mote Park on Sunday 9
September, from 12.45 to 6pm. Admission is FREE.
Involving YOU!
Maidstone’s overview and scrutiny committees act as a ‘critical friend’ to the
council and its partners. They consider decisions which have been made, or
are about to be made, and recommend ways of improving them. They are
keen to act on behalf of residents and look at issues that affect local people.
This year they will be looking at:
Last year they looked at:
• Council partnerships – what value • The image of Maidstone – what do
do they add?
you think about your Borough?
• Support for small businesses –
• Maidstone’s Market – is it in the
what more can be done?
right place, do you use it?
• The council’s budget - does it
• Direct access homelessness
match priorities?
provision
• Water shortages in the borough.
• Elderly people’s housing provision
• Making the most of the river.
• Dentistry
And they want to appoint interested members of the public to help with the
reviews and to submit written submissions via email or letter.
