THERE’S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS!
Please join us for the Globe Guilders Production of the Annual MFA Luncheon
that will be held on Monday, February 23, 2015 at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse, 2150
Harbor Island, San Diego 92101. Everything about it is exciting! There will be a
no host social hour at 11:00am followed by lunch at noon. After lunch, our Special Theatrical Entertainment will be presented by future toasts of Broadway, our
own Old Globe/University of San Diego Master of Fine Arts Students directed by
Ray Chambers. This is always a fabulous event, one you will not want to miss. So

mentored individually by longtime Guilders. This year is an exciting experience for all of us as
several important anniversaries of
the Guilders and the Theatre will
be celebrated throughout 2015.

the 100th anniversary of Balboa
Park and the 80th of the Old Globe.

IN MEMORIUM
Patricia Paul - Born
March 17, 1947 passed away November 14, 2014.
In 1969, she married
her high school
sweetheart, Charles
Paul. They were
married for 45 years
and together for 53
years. They moved
from Texas to San
Diego where they raised their three
children. Patricia taught 10th grade honors English for 27 years and was coach
of a speech team that won many awards.
In retirement, she remained a speech
team coach and became extremely active in many non-profit organizations.
She served on the board of Social Service Auxiliary and was an active member of Wine and Roses, Friends of East
County Arts, and The Globe Guilders.
She was also active in PEO, IRIS and
Women at the Well. Patricia always had
great enthusiasm, passion and a positive spirit. She had a contagious smile
and always took on the largest tasks
with a high level of energy. She always
had a kind and encouraging word for
her family, friends and strangers.

my first play, a student matinee of Merchant of Venice at the Old Globe Theatre. I was riveted, exhilarated, amused,
and enlivened in a way that changed my
life. It ushered me into a life in the theater....... I am honored to be here with all
of you to once again say thank you."
Bening was Honorary Chair of the fashion show that year and it meant a lot to
her. Oscar de la Renta was the featured
designer for the14th time and Bening
took time from her busy schedule to
drive from Los Angeles by herself and
attend the Globe fashion extravaganza.
She had a wonderful experience and her
love for the Globe was apparent to the
many guests.
Following in her steps, and in those of
many other accomplished people, as
Honorary Chair of the 2015 Celebrating
Couture, is humbling. Please know
how grateful I am to serve in this role.
Our designer, once again, is the esteemed Naeem Khan, a great friend of
our theatres. Just thinking about this
momentous year and being a part of it
is thrilling. How in the world can I be so
fortunate? Let me rephrase that. How
can we be so fortunate? Think about it.
2015 is the 60th anniversary of the
Globe Guilders and it marks the 25th
Guilder fashion show. These milestones
are wrapped in the bright decoration of
The Old Globe's 80th Anniversary.
Then, there is our beloved Craig Noel
who would have been 100 years old
this year. Add to all that the Balboa
Park Panama-California Exposition
Centennial and we have a boffo year.
Balboa Park was, by his own admission,
Craig's beloved playground. The
Globe was built and the Globe Players
began performing abbreviated versions of Shakespeare's plays in Balboa
Park at the 1935 fair.
Among the many past fashion show
Honorary Chairs are such illustrious
names as Craig Noel (fittingly, he was
the first in 1992---there was no Honorary Chair in 1991) and a bevy of Honorary Chairs in 1995 that included Karen
Cohn, Bea Epsten, Martha Gafford, Kitty
Kaufman, Peggy Preuss, and Bobbie
Quick. The inimitable Craig Noel joined
the distinguished group. Karen Cohn
served solo years later. Dolly Poet was
honored, as were Marianne McDonald,
Marion Ross, Stockard Channing, Jonathan McMurtry and Sheryl White twice in
2006 and 2008. Valerie Cooper, Jo Ann
Kilty, Elaine Darwin and so many other
spectacular individuals have worn this
hat. The luster of the roster is a tribute to
the Guilders and The Old Globe.
Stockard Channing penned a beautiful
tribute to the Globe the year she was
Honorary Chair when she wrote:
"Thank you for your support of the Old
Globe Theatre. I have such happy memories of working there. The level of skill
and dedication is truly extraordinary as
is the wonderful warmth of the staff and
the energy of the audience."
What Channing expressed explains the
continued devotion to The Old Globe by
myriad supporters. The elements of this
great institution have come together for
our 2015 celebratory year. We are all
players in it and aren't we fortunate!

Dear Globe Guilders,
Welcome to 2015 and the start of the Globe’s 80th Anniversary! We’re
looking forward to the next twelve months which will include a fantastic line-up of shows in each of our three theatres; grand events like
Celebrating Couture and the Globe Gala; impactful community endeavors such as Globe for All; a host of other activities and celebrations fitting this milestone year; and, of course, our 60th anniversary of
working hand-in-hand with you, our fabulous Globe Guilders.
With a host of remarkable productions and occasions on the horizon,
we invite you to start early and join us for the first two shows of the year,
beginning at the end of this month with Murder for Two. It is a hilarious, musical, murder mystery, brought
to life by two actors playing all 11 roles…and each playing the piano as well! On the arena stage, Barry
will direct Hal Linden and an all-star cast in The Twenty-seventh Man, a hauntingly poignant play that takes
place in Russia in 1952 and explores what it means to write in troubled times.

The Guilders love December Nights when the whole of Balboa Park puts on its festive flair and opens its doors. The Old Globe decorates the square with the fabulous

A great Awards Banquet was held at the Bali Hai on October 14, 2014. 95 Guilders
and friends attended, including the actor Robert Foxworth, the Globe's Artistic Director Barry Edelstein and many of the Globe’s Board of Directors. The bay was especially beautiful with a giant Princess Cruise ship leaving right before our window.

The Guilders gave the Theatre $130,000 this year, the greatest amount so far. Margi
Sargis received the President's Award, Angie DeCaro received the Guilder of the Year Award, Laurie Blackington received the
Irma Macpherson Founder Award, and Lois Lewis was honored as Fashion Show Chair 2014. The Guilder of the Year award is a
19 1/2" brass engraved plate with all the names of recipients since 1997. The current recipient keeps this for one year. The following year, they receive a personal 8" plate with only their name on it. The same process is followed for the Founder Award whereby this year’s recipient receives a beautiful champagne bucket, the base of which is engraved with all the recipients’ names. The
following year, they receive a silver spoon, in memory of Irma Macpherson, who used a
spoon to call meetings to order. The Fashion Show Chair receives a beautiful etched
plate from Tiffany's. And the President selects a gift for the President Award recipient.
A lovely evening was had by all!

HISTORY MOMENT #1 - THE GREAT FIRE
Darlene Davies is The Old Globe Historian and is kind enough to
share these Moments of The Old Globe History with us.
A fire destroyed the Old Globe Theatre in 1978. It was world
news and the public response was enormous. Almost immediately, a theatre rebuilding campaign was begun. All sorts of fund
raisers took place, from traditional dinners to Maggie Mazur's
"Dump the Plump" contest. One of the most popular was a Saturday, March 10, 1979 telecast on what was then KCST, hosted by
Paul Bloom and Bob Dale. Among the performers who appeared live on the
screen to support the Globe were Victor Buono, of "What Ever Happened to
Baby Jane?," Patrick Duffy of "Dallas," Marion Ross of "Happy Days," Monte
Markham, of "Guns of the Magnificent Seven" and other films, Christopher
Reeve
of "Superman" fame, and Beah Richards, fondly remembered for her role
1 in the milestone movie "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner." The impossibly handsome Reeve sold kisses on air to raise funds. He sold a lot of kisses!
Patrick Duffy married Carlyn Rosser, who performed in Craig Noel's terrific
production of the musical "On the Town" in the Globe's 1958-59 season. The
marriage has endured, and so has TV's "Dallas," which was recently revived,
with Duffy in the cast, and given new life in a TV movie version. Marion Ross
returns to the Globe frequently, having performed in the Sheryl and Harvey
White Theatre in 2010. Reeve had great respect for the Globe, where he had
performed as a young actor in the Shakespeare Festival. Victor Buono left a
lengthy filmography, but his first love was the Globe. He often returned to help
in the costume and prop shops. He was formed by San Diego Junior Theatre and
the Globe and he never forgot it. Beah Richards began her career at the Globe.
That 1979 telecast reflected the sorrow and joy of the moment. Sorrow because
much of the Globe's past was gone and joy because a larger and better Globe
6 a reality in 1982, with the

6 The MFA students came back from their semester break on January
20, and will start in on rehearsals for "Trelawney of the Wells", a
production to be seen at the Studio Theatre on the campus of USD.
The production opens on February 28. It will be directed by Sabin
Epstein, a former teacher in9the USD/Globe Acting program.
“Beloved actress Rose Trelawny is ready to sacrifice anything for
love - even her successful theatre career. She soon discovers real
life is not for her. Will she abandon her husband and return to the
stage? Will she discover that the footlights have changed forever?” The production runs through March 4, 2015.
The Master of Fine Arts in Acting first year students, Amy Blackman, Maxx Brawer,
Ally Carey, Makha Mthembu, Jake Millgard, Daniel Petzold, and Nathan Whitmer,
will be the featured program at the February 23 luncheon at Tom Ham's Lighthouse
restaurant. The students will perform a short program, followed by a "getting to
know you" interview. They hope to see you there. It's always a delightful day.
