45. List the teaching methods adopted by the faculty for different programmes.
From the traditional lecture methods using black or white boards to the interactive
methods using latest tools such as smart boards, presentations, poster preparations,
seminars, quiz, Q and A sessions, a whole gamut of methods is used regularly
depending on factors such as the student level, time available, quality of syllabus to be
covered. The faculty members, jointly and severally, discuss and use the pedagogy
that best suits the matter at hand.
46. How does the department ensure that programme objectives are constantly met
and learning outcomes are monitored?
The University has established a system of IQAC and the feedback received
anonymously by the IQAC cell is conveyed to the faculty. This gives us pointers that
enable us to streamline our delivery system. Every two to three weeks a meeting with
the students of each programme enables us to take stock of progress made
academically and any difficulty is addressed and a solution arrived at. Apart from the
sessional tests learning outcomes are monitored through informal quiz, role play and
presentations. Progress in teaching and learning is thus proactively monitored and
acted upon.
47. Highlight the participation of students and faculty in extension activities.
After exploring various target groups for the implementation of extension activities,
the Department of French & Other Foreign Languages identified four NGOs in
Chennai. These target groups comprised students aged between 5 and 22, both male
and female.
Four groups of volunteers from the Department adopted an NGO each and taught
spoken French to the children for two months (from January 2011– March 2011). The
volunteers also apprised the students from the four NGOs of higher education in
French and job opportunities.
At the end of the programme the department of French conducted a valedictory
function in each of these NGOs and distributed note book and pen to each student.
The NGOs and their students gave a positive feed-back and informed us that they
benefited from this programme. They appreciated the efforts taken by the University
of Madras for organizing such extension activities for the benefit of the society and
the underprivileged.

NAAC Reaccreditation - Evaluative Report
School of English and Foreign Languages
Department of French and Other Foreign Languages
The beneficiaries always express their appreciation of the efforts taken by the
University of Madras for organizing such extension activities for the benefit of the
society and the underprivileged.
In 2012-2013 the target group was changed to also include elementary school students
from economically and socially challenged backgrounds and the same programme
was conducted and well received.
While the students are actually conducting the programme the faculty members are
responsible for choosing the institutions and ensuring the administration and
management of the programme along with the devising of the curricular aspects. The
entire extension activity is monitored by a faculty member from start to finish.
48. Give details of “beyond syllabus scholarly activities” of the department.
Since the department of French and other foreign languages is a unique department in
that it deals with languages and cultures that are not encountered in the everyday
routine of the department special efforts are taken to make the students obtain an allrounded and in-depth understanding and appreciation of what could be termed
“alien” “foreign” or “international” cultures. These include lectures, exhibitions
poster making and exchanges with international students who hold weekly seminars
for our students so that the department students can benefit by imbibing aspects of
culture that go beyond the books but are real, actual and lived. As the delivery is
done by peer group members in terms of generation it is certainly more effective.
49. State whether the programme/ department is accredited/ graded by other
agencies? If yes, give details.
Only through the University of Madras and as per its rules and regulations.
50. Briefly highlight the contributions of the department in generating new
knowledge, basic or applied.
By participating regularly in various forums at the national and international level

52. Future plans of the department.
The Department being unique and one of its kind envisions becoming a Centre of
Excellence. The department has signed MOU with various universities in France
(Refer Annexure H) and these collaborative contacts could be consolidated to make it
an important centre for French and Francophone studies in south India. Besides, the
Department aims to be a centre for training of students for NET and SLET exams. As
SLET in French does not exist the department aims to work with the University
towards introducing SLET in French in the near future.
