What this has shown is that there is considerable depth in capacity and capability of our organisation, but also room for improvement. We are tackling these areas in a methodical and planned way. Our CEO, Kim Guerin, has had a difficult year personally, but she has been strongly supported by the many good people, both paid staff and volunteers, that we have throughout the state. My thanks to all those people, your willingness to assist has been much appreciated by both Kim and me. Kim has continued to focus on the interaction between HQ and associations, and HQ and Hockey Australia, understanding where these are at and what can be refined and improved. Part of this activity has included an ongoing review and update of our Strategic Plan, done in conjunction with visits to associations and teleconference sessions seeking input from association Presidents. Our Strategic Plan will continue to evolve and mature, as we review it annually in conjunction with our identified risks, our priorities and your input. committee management, policies and strategic planning, are amongst the best in the State and continue to evolve as requirements change. We will continue to endeavour to ensure that costs are contained. We continue to try and make greater use of technology, including the website, e-newsletters, email and social media tools like Facebook and Twitter. Communications with members across our big state have been improved through introduction of a CEO newsletter, but we have more work to do to improve the communication down to individual players and members. We need to continue to use available technology, including social media, to improve communication at all levels, and this will continue to be a focus for the Board in the coming year. In closing, I would like to thank all the members of the Hockey Queensland Board, for their ongoing support, consideration, high work ethic and good humour. I would also like to thank our CEO, Kim Guerin, for her enthusiasm, persistence, commitment and good humour. And finally to all the greater hockey fraternity, my heartfelt thanks for your efforts and achievements and support. Dr Karin Walduck It is pleasing that Hockey in Queensland continues to maintain its strength as a national leader. Our state teams continue to be successful at the national level. Elsewhere in the report you can read of the various successes of our state teams but it is not just our players that are successful, it is also our coaches, umpires, technical officials, administrators and staff. This reflects the strengths of each of our associations in growing and developing the sport at the grass roots. However, we also need to be mindful of the seemingly ever-increasing cost of managing and administering our sport, and its impact on both participation and on elite performance. To this end we need to be reassured that our sport is well-governed and managed. The Hockey Queensland governance model and practices, including Board and Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2012 5 CEO’s REPORT Following the endorsement of our new vision “To lead and grow hockey in Qld” we have adopted seven key strategic objectives to realize this vision for the next 3-year period. 1. To attract and retain people in our sport 2. Build our profile and facilities by being innovative 3. Grow new revenue sources 4. Working and communicating effectively with all stakeholders 5. Staying a leader in national hockey 6. Facilitating access to hockey for disadvantaged and minority groups 7. Leading the way in effective governance of the sport Collectively we set ourselves the challenge of a 6% increase in our membership by 2014 whilst also maintaining our position on the National scene by consistently achieving a top 3 placing every time we wear the mighty ‘Maroon’ colours. Against a backdrop of escalating costs, time-poor athletes and volunteers, a competitive marketplace and a 3-year plateau in hockey membership, we are aware that these targets will be challenging and require us to question everything we do to ensure we make the most of our efforts. London 2012 Olympics Inspiration We kicked off 2012 with the “Good Luck Banner” initiative designed to leverage the build-up to the Olympics. Across Qld the Associations embraced the opportunity to unite their members behind the initiative, particularly with the Sunshine Coast hosting the Hockeyroos v USA in April and Cairns hosting the Kookaburra’s V NZ test series in June. The naming of the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras to compete at the London 2012 Olympics realized the dreams of nine (9) Queenslanders. Congratulations Madonna Blyth, Teneal Attard, Jodie Schulz, Jamie Dwyer, Mark Knowles, Liam De Young, Nathan Burgers, Matthew Gohdes and Matthew Swann – we’re incredibly proud of you! London not only saw Qlders on the field, we were also represented amongst the rank of officials – Julie AshtonLucy and Robyn Shaw. Julie was selected to umpire one of the two women’s hockey semi-finals and then the Gold Medal Match – the biggest match in women’s world hockey. She became 6 Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2012 the first female Australian hockey umpire to officiate at three Olympic Games. The honour was the culmination of a twenty-year umpiring career. Robyn was appointed Team Manager of the Hockeyroos. Robyn’s love of hockey began as a 10-yr old playing in Cairns in 1975 and a Qld rep player from 1977. She first started her Team Manager career with the Qld Scorchers in 1999 and since 2005 she has managed 135 International games for the Hockeyroos. We’re proud to have you in our ranks! The “Good Luck Banner” initiative and the increased profile of hockey in this Olympic year has realised an increased engagement in hockey through the Hookin2Hockey program which achieved in excess of 1,600 new participants (200 more than last year); 1,600 registering for the first time (5 – 12year olds); and more than 230 aspiring coaches (132 more than last year) and 90 aspiring umpires (maintaining last year) completed their accreditation. The network of regional development officers, coaching directors and volunteer administrators are the key to achieving this success. In athlete and coach development, Barry Vohland and the team of 14 regional coaching directors and development officers have continued to deliver development opportunities in the form of camps, tours and specialist clinics for players from under 13 to open age. The standout performances this year were the U18 Girls, coached by Sharyn Simpson and U21 Men, coached by Mick Evans winning GOLD at the National Championships. With the Junior World Cup upon us in 2013, we are very optimistic about good representation in the Australian Junior Squads. New Super League Competition With the focus on ‘lead and grow’, the high performance and development area of the organisation took the lead on trialling a new zone-based competition for men and women (Super League) designed to attract the ‘best’ players to compete; deliver a product that will enhance the profile of hockey in Qld; expose the talent and potential of players seeking selection in Qld representative teams; and provide development opportunities for coaches and game officials. The inaugural competition was held in Brisbane in June and attracted 88% of the top 100-players in Qld. The concept was well received by the players and associations with endorsement to continue with the concept in 2013. International Recognition – Remote & Indigenous Hockey Program (RIHP) Since its inception in 2001, the RIHP has incrementally grown into a flag-ship program for Hockey Qld. In 2012 the program has been recognized by Australian Sports Commission as a best practice program for delivering sport in remote and rural regions. Beyond Sport recognized the RIHP Program as an internationally recognized sports development program with selection as a short list finalist in the International Beyond Sport Awards in London. The RIHP Rubies have been featured as a finalist in Australian Women’s Health Magazine – Women in Sport Awards and Women Sport Queensland selected RIHP Hockey Program as winners in their category – contribution to sport. A key achievement for 2012 was the development and support of the Rubies as part of the indigenous pathways support program and the first indigenous hockey team to compete abroad. This program identified talented young indigenous females and invited them to be part of a program to increase skill and fitness levels and encourage them to seek selection in regional, state and national programs. Looking Forward The team of Regional Coaching Directors, Development Officers, Barry Vohland, Julie McNeil, Danielle Stein, Greg Gunner and HQ office staff has been instrumental in Hockey Qld’s performance this year. I would like to acknowledge their commitment to our sport and thank them for their dedication. We are positioned to build upon these achievements next year with the “2013 State Wide Sign-on Campaign” set to continue the momentum towards a 6% increase in membership, attract new players and a call to return to those who have had a break from the sport. It has been a particularly challenging year for me personally and I’d like to thank the Board, the Members and staff for their strong support during the year. I’d like to acknowledge the advice and counsel of Karin Walduck (President), Karen Bain (Director), Barry Dancer (QAS, High Performance Director), Member Association Presidents, Jason Greenhalgh (Director Major League Corporate Marketing) and the volunteers who take on the role of Chair for our various Sub-Committees. In closing I’d like to thank the Qld Government, the Qld Academy of Sport and our corporate partners for their generous contributions to Hockey Qld that have made possible our achievements this year. Grant Treeby Images Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2012 7 Coach & Player Development Manager It is with pleasure that I report on the events of 2012, an Olympic Year! Throughout the past year there has been a lot of work done by many people to keep Hockey Queensland at the fore front of Hockey in Australia. We are, and continue to be recognised as a leading and innovative State within Australian Hockey. Whilst it is great to look back at the year that was, and congratulate those who contributed, we must continue to be innovative, diligent and enthusiastic about our future, if we are to have continued success. Hockey Queensland Tier 5 Program Objective: To develop and support identified talented athletes to achieve a higher representative level, and to better prepare them for introduction to QAS Scholarships, National Futures Squads or National Teams. HQ RCD & RDO Network Our Professional Coaching structure of employed Coaches across the State, (currently 7 fulltime and 6 part time) is still believed to be the most successful way of continuing to provide development and growth to Hockey Queensland for both participants, coaches, officials and volunteers throughout the State. We continue to see good progression through to Tier 4 (QAS Scholarships) and higher. The program has been supported by the QAS I would like to thank Carl Dalton who has played a major role in the operation and success of this program. These positions, of course could not happen without the tremendous support of the Member Associations where the Coaching Directors are based. There have been a couple of changes within the ranks this year, with Tweed Hockey not being in a position to renew the contract with Matt Bartell and Dylan Elliott commenced work on a part time basis in Bundaberg. Dylan has brought some excellent results from there already. Matt Bartell has been able to provide valuable services and programs in Regions where an RCD or RDO is not currently employed. (Rockhampton, Gladstone & Warwick) Of course there are many volunteer coaches around our State who deserve mention, and they are and should be, a priority for development and growth, and we should be constantly looking for initiatives to continue to develop these volunteer Coaches and officials. The Hockey Qld “Scholarship Coach” positions with the Under 15 State Teams provides one such opportunity for emerging Coaches to gain knowledge and experience, and this year we have expanded the concept to include “Mentor “ Coaches where appropriate to further assist and Develop State Team Coaches. One of the most enjoyable parts of my role is visiting various Member Associations throughout Queensland meeting players, coaches and administration personnel, and hearing about the various issues, and the successful things that happen in their centre. Each Association in Queensland is unique, however there are many good initiatives happening out there that should be shared across the State! 8 Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2012 Elite Level / QAS I would like to thank the QAS Coaches, Des King, Matt Wells & Carl Dalton for their hard work over the past year, and I’m sure they will continue to lead and grow our elite programs. Des, Matt & Carl have made visits to Regional centres and have a good appreciation of the potential talent that is in Regional areas of Queensland. QAS provide us with many resources that allow our programs and Athletes to continue to Develop. QAS program Manager, Barry Dancer has been particularly supportive of Hockey Queensland. Coach Education Coach Education has continued to challenge us this year, and through the good work of John Mowat at Hockey Australia, the Coaching Courses are now more user friendly and easier to present. We are on track to meet our KPI’s (Targets) in terms of numbers for accredited Coaches for the year. This is due also to the work of the Regional Coaching Directors around the State who are the primary deliverers of Coaching Courses. Hockey Qld in conjunction with Hockey Australia conducted an “Advanced” (Level 3) course in Brisbane late last year for some 15 participants. This was the first course of its type to be conducted in Queensland, and we are confident that this could become a Bi annual event. STATE TEAM PERFORMANCES We have once again had a successful year with Qld Team performances. Our Under 18 Girls, under the guidance of Sharyn Simpson, were National Champions, winning in convincing style in the Grand Final . The future looks good for this group and with Junior World Cup coming up in 2013, we can look forward to good representation in the National Junior Squad. On the Men’s side, the Qld U21 Men were also winners at the National Championships this year, led by Coach Michael Evans, the Men did a fantastic job to defeat WA in the Final. With the possibility of some retirements in the Blades Squad in the near future, we can be assured there are a number of players ready to fill their spots. With the AHL and the Under 13 and U15 Nationals still to be played (at the time of writing) there are positive feelings around the possibility of further National Championship titles coming our way! OTHER PROGRAMS RIHP Thanks to Julie McNeil’s leadership and management this program continues to develop and grow. We now see opportunities, not only for new players but also for developing potential Elite Indigenous Athletes from all over Qld. There is no limit to where this program will go!! Well done Julie! Specialist Camps Hockey Qld will conduct the second year of our Drag Flick Specialist Camps during the latter part of the year. The funding for this initiative has been provided by Hockey Australia and it shows their confidence in us to conduct such a program and the results will be seen in the future. Competitions: This year saw the first ever “Super League” competition conducted in Qld. Whilst there were some teething problems, the standard of competition was recognised and enjoyed by participants and spectators alike. There is strong support around the State to further develop the concept in the future. THANKS My sincere thanks to the Karin Walduck and the Board of Hockey Queensland for their support of me throughout the past year and to Kim Guerin, who has had a particularly difficult year and has shown enormous courage to continue to bring leadership to Hockey Qld. To the office staff at HQ, thanks and I appreciate your help and support over the last year. To the hundreds of volunteers throughout the State who without you, our Sport would not survive, thank you!!! Finally A huge thankyou to all the Regional Coaching Directors and Development Officers for a job well done, and I appreciate your support and the effort and passion you provide to Hockey in Queensland. Barry Vohland Hockey Queensland Coach & Player Development Manager Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2012 9 Queensland Hockey Promotion The major activation was the creative competition which offered young hockey fans the chance to creatively express their well wishes for the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras in London. The 2011-2012 year was the third year of a three-year agreement between Queensland Hockey Promotion (QHP) and Major League Corporate Marketing. Naturally everyone in the hockey community was focused on the Olympic Games in London and QHP also ensured the Olympics was one of the main focuses of the 20112012 Marketing Plan. The first of the two major Olympic activations was the ‘Good Luck in London’ banner signing, which saw two banners circulate between all hockey Associations in Queensland. The concept behind the banners was to allow all hockey fans the chance to write their messages of support for the Olympic teams and create excitement and media opportunities throughout the state. The banners were then presented to the two National teams before the Olympics and was a great success. Event management provided by QHP to Hockey Queensland included assistance with developing and managing the Hockey Queensland Awards Dinner and various hockey tournaments throughout the year, including the inaugural Super League tournament which was deemed a success by all involved. The Hockey Queensland Business Lunch (held in late August), featuring Stuart Grimshaw (CEO of the Bank of Queensland and President of Hockey Australia) as well as an Olympic panel, including Brent Livermore OAM, was another major highlight of the Hockey Queensland event schedule. Many excellent entries were received for this promotion which saw Rina Heyns from Toowoomba Hockey Association win a signed and framed Kookaburras jersey. QHP continued to develop the e-newsletter (E-Dribble) by focussing on increasing subscriber numbers and improving the quality of newsletter content. QHP also continued with the implementation of a range of new media and digital communications strategies. This included the Hockey Queensland Facebook page and YouTube Channel. Content for the YouTube Channel was supplemented with a series of video interviews that were distributed through the Facebook page, Hockey E-Dribble and on the Hockey Queensland website. The sponsorship market remained challenging in 2011 and QHP focused much of its effort on servicing Hockey Queensland’s current stable of corporate partners. The major sponsorship deal secured in the 2011 period was the signing of Schweppes as the official beverage supplier for Hockey Queensland. This agreement covers all Hockey Queensland Associations and offers competitive pricing and a rebate on purchased product and has been well received by the majority of Associations. 10 Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2012 The Hockey Queensland School Holiday Clinics and the new partnership with Kookaburra to sponsor these events continue to be a successful revenue generator and hockey development program. The Hockey Queensland School Holiday Clinics and the new partnership with Kookaburra to sponsor these events continue to be a successful revenue generator and hockey development program. Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2012 11 Remote and Indigenous Hockey WE PLAY HOCKEY TOO RIHP Hockey 2012 Report It was on any measurement – a watershed year for the Remote and Indigenous Communities Hockey Development Program (RIHP Hockey). RIHP Rubies was created as part of the indigenous pathways support program and this team became the first indigenous hockey team to compete abroad. This program identified talented young indigenous females and invited them to be part of a program to increase skill and fitness levels and encourage them to seek selection in regional, state and national programs. Of the 9 members of this team, all 9 represented at regional level and 5 were selected in state squads and/or teams and 2 competed in national Under 21 country teams. The media supported this team with both indigenous and mainstream press and electronic media promoted the rubies regionally/state and nationally. The social media strategies were successful in increasing awareness through specifically designed Face Book pages, Twitter and RIHP Hockey on you tube. This continues to be an effective way to highlight what is happening within the program with it’s you tube channel approaching 9000 hits in just 6 months of activity. The RIHP s had great feedback from the DVD – Leading the Way which captures the journey of the Rubies. The RIHP Hockey website supports the program as an effective resource and information tool to link with Hockey Qld. Not often can we measure what effect this increase in awareness has but in 2012, RIHP Hockey increased its delivery programs from 39 communities in 2011 to 54 communities in 2012. From the remote islands of Torres Strait to the communities on the NT border, RIHP delivered introductory hockey programs to over 3000 participants and an additional 700 were involved in regular hockey programs over 10-12 weeks. 300 players continued through RIHP pathways into regional competitions in the North West, Gulf Savannah and Torres Strait. In addition over 100 players transitioned into and registered in mainstream hockey clubs and competed in Mount Isa, Cairns and Townsville Hockey Junior Competitions. RIHP Hockey supports a hockey development officer and mentor coach employment program which gives opportunities to indigenous and non-indigenous young people to be trained to deliver hockey across these remote and disadvantaged communities. The development officers have taken the lead in modifying the Hook in2 Hockey Programs to include messages that highlight the 12 Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2012 importance of attending school on a regular basis, making healthy eating choices, promoting positive behaviour in junior sport and mentor and leadership programs. David McNeil – Cairns RCD continues to provide strong mentor support and we thank him and others for sharing their experience and knowledge generously as part of this program .RIHP development officers take an active role in delivery programs that build community capacity and support positive social change and should be recognized for their significant contribution.. RIHP Hockey was also recognized by Australian Sports Commission as a best practice program for delivering sport in remote and rural regions. RIHP Hockey would not be able to achieve the successes in 2012 without supportive partnerships. We thank the Queensland Government Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing for their ongoing support and valued assistance. We thank Commonwealth Government through DEEWR, and ISARP, AASC and ASC and look forward to a positive future. To the Local Councils, Schools and Community Organizations that work with us, we say thank you. The hockey community in particular Hockey Australia, Cairns and Mount Isa Hockey Associations show us respect and support and we acknowledge them as true friends of the RIHP Program. We thank Just Hockey and Skytrans for providing financial support to ensure RIHP can continue to provide opportunities. Hockey Queensland Board, Office and Member support is second to none and empowers us to LEAD AND GROW Finally we recognize the upward of 3700 participants across a region of nearly 1 million square kilometres that made the choice to learn about and play hockey. Distance restricts mainstream hockey players seeing them but RIHP have a significant number of people and families that can legitimately say WE PLAY HOCKEY TOO and it is the aim of RIHP to support them to become your team mates one day. The first three days of the draw would set our AHL up and give us a real perspective of where we were going to sit facing Western Australia on day 1, NSW on day 2 and then Victoria on day 3. Our focus this year was starting well and getting early results and building momentum. Game one could not have gone any better with a convincing 6 -0 win over WA. At both ends of the field we were very strong and combined with the ability to get outcomes in the circle we could pile scoreboard pressure on the opposition which they couldn’t come back from. Less than 24 hours later, the tide turned and we chased and had to play catch up to a hungry NSW team. We started the game poorly conceding within the first 2 minutes of the game which set a tone for what was a frustrating match. As soon as we clawed our way back into the game, we would have a defensive lapse and be behind again. Two late NSW goals gave them enough of a buffer and a gap we just couldn’t get back even though we still created more goal scoring opportunities than they did. They were just much more clinical in the circle than us which was a turnaround from the previous day. This would prove to become a big issue for us throughout the remainder of the Tournament. After receiving a well-timed reality check the day before, our third game against Victoria would provide a good opportunity to test the group on how they could rebound back from the disappointing loss. From the outset we dominated the game creating numerous chances but without a result to show on the scoreboard. Again we would chase the game as we conceded against the run of play. A resilient approach saw us get back and go ahead but only to let the Vics back in and tie it up. Two late second half goals gave us a comfortable buffer that allowed us to close the game out and give us well deserved win and put us in a good position after the first stage of the Tournament. This, we would find out the hard way as again we dominated the stats sheet with opportunities for the entire match but 18 Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2012 without enough reward. Once again we chased as Tasmania scored first against the play which was becoming a trend for us. We got back to 1 all but only to go back down 2-1 straight after half time. We ended up equalising and the 2-2 score would be the final result however we were lucky to get away with that as Tasmania dominated attack in the last 8 minutes but couldn’t pounce on various PC attack chances they had. Defensively this was our worst performance to date and left the group very frustrated and angry with the style they played. The next opponent was Northern Territory who had been struggling through the first week. We had regrouped and assessed the previous performance and targeted goals as a focus point to make sure we had scoreboard pressure on our opposition. From the first whistle we dominated possession and controlled the play. NT defended their half pretty much the entire match and made it difficult to penetrate into the circle easily but perseverance paid off and we came away with a convincing 6-0 win. This was a good confidence boost for the group being able to score a number of goals. Following another rest day, which we trained on and ironed out a few little areas, we entered the last part of the tournament a lot clearer on our roles and responsibilities in situations we were facing. In our most dominant performance we only managed to defeat South Australia 3-1. Defensively we shut them out and only conceded in the last 30 seconds but frustration was growing around our inability to score. The last round match was against ACT who has been our bogey side the last two years. We again made things tough on ourselves not pouncing on opportunities and as had happened earlier in the Tournament, we found ourselves behind after conceding off their one and only attack for the half. We clawed our way back and persistence paid off equalising just before half time. It wasn’t until 15 minutes to go that the grinding took affect and we were able to punch out 5 goals to give us a flattering 6-1 win from a less than acceptable performance by our standard. However after the day’s games, and not to be clouded by how we were playing, we had managed to place ourselves at the top of the table following the round games which was well deserved. This now put us up against the Vics in the Semi Final. We entered the game very clear on what we needed to do and had made some subtle positional changes in our deep defense to help nullify the Victorian attack. Our focus was to be defensively sound and deny easy penetration by our opposition and to take our chances at the other end knowing that we would create plenty of opportunity for ourselves. As expected, the match was a tight battle. Defensively we were the best we had been for the whole Tournament, not allowing the Vics into our circle easily. Again we squandered a few opportunities throughout the match to keep them in the contest but a resilient approach and sticking to the game plan allowed us to win 3-1. A little luck with an own goal and a goal with only 1 second left in the game made the result look comfortable but for the majority it was very tight. The second Semi Final finished with WA defeating NSW convincingly 4-1 and moving on to face us in the Final 24 hours later. Once again we would face off in a final against WA. Over the last 12 years this has been become a big rivalry, with WA holding the upper hand in Finals in recent times. As expected, we knew this match would be nothing like the first and that WA would match up to us a lot better. The first half proved that, as we totally dominated the game and limited their attacking opportunities. We held a well deserved 2-0 lead which should have been more, before our one and only defensive lapse for the half let them equalise. In the second half, the game started swinging in WA’s favour. We lost control of the play and they became much more attacking. Our defense was put under immense pressure which they soaked up well. Once we got hold of the ball for longer periods we were able to give ourselves a buffer again with our third goal, but only for WA to score within the next 5 minutes. The last 11 minutes saw WA throw everything at us but to only be shut down by a solid desperate defense. The Cup was finally back in our hands!!! Overall this was a very rewarding effort. By no means were we a “sure thing” to win, but we were the team that created the most opportunities throughout the Tournament. All along we made small adjustments relating to our oppositions that we would come up against and by the end we had total clarity on our roles and responsibilities. This year was a total team effort with everybody contributing and having an impact, both on and off the field. Matthew Wells Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2012 19 2012 AHL QLD BLADES AND QLD Scorchers ReportS (cont’d) 2012 QLD Scorchers credit to the players that within 24 hours they were able to get themselves up for the Bronze Medal game to defeat WA 3-0. One of the reasons we were able to do this was that we understood that we had a responsibility when representing HockeyQLD to go out and perform at our best for all the supporters and members within the HockeyQLD community and we did not want to let anyone down. A normal training week was as follows: Results Game 1: QLD v VIC (3-1 win) Game 2: QLD v NT (3-0 win), Jo Game 3: QLD v TAS (5-0 win) Game 4: QLD v WA (2-1 win) Game 5: QLD v NSW (0-1 loss) Game 6: QLD v SA (1-0 win) Game 7: QLD v ACT (5-2 win) S/Final: QLD v NSW (1-2 loss) Bronze: QLD v WA (3-0 win) 9 games: 23 Goals for / 7 Goals against Preparation The QLD Scorchers Squad was announced at the completion of Super League and then added to after the 2012 Australian U21 Championships. The full QLD Squad of 32 athletes commenced preparing for the 2012 AHL on Monday 30 July with 6 of the QLD Scorchers Squad being based in Perth. Mon am pm MiniGames +Fitness Tues Wed Thurs Fri Sat Sun MiniGames +Fitness Technical Club Skills Skills Game Intra Squad Club Game The actual team to represent QLD at the 2012 AHL was selected on Tuesday 18 September (4 weeks prior to the tournament). Selecting the final team was a very difficult task due to the number of younger QLD athletes pushing through and the re-emergence of the likes of Amy Swann, we were well aware of the improved depth in the QLD Scorchers Squad. One aspect of our preparation was the inclusion of U18 Boys into our training environment within trainings and in the last stage of our preparation for games against Brisbane U18 1 & 2 teams and the QLD U15 Team when it was in camp preparing for its own tournament. A big thank-you to Mick Evans and Matt Bartell for making these development opportunities available, as they were a key part of our preparation. Another aspect of our preparation was a fundraiser which was initiated, planned and implemented by the playing group. Rebecca Reuter and Prue Eiser were the key leaders of this initiative, but it was the whole QLD Squad that worked together to raise $19,691 (at last count) to go towards funding the 2012 AHL. The night was a great success and is hopefully the first of what will be an annual event. The current players have expressed a desire to have more ex-QLD Scorchers players attend this function in the years ahead. 2012 AHL Overall, we played some excellent hockey in Perth to be on top of the table at the end of the round games and we were confident and respectful leading into the Finals. In the end we are all very disappointed that we did not win the tournament, being defeated by NSW in the Semi-Final 1-2 in a match where we had more than double the opportunities of NSW to score, but were thwarted by a very good goalkeeping performance by Toni Cronk and our own inability to find a way to get the job done regardless. The disappointment in the dressing room afterwards was significant, and it a real 20 Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2012 Thank-you As Coach of the team I was very lucky to have such an excellent off field team. Margaret Dilger – Defence Brian Fitzpatrick – Attack and Team-building Erin Smyth – Physio Each of these people had a significant positive effect on the QLD Scorchers Team in 2012. They are all very good at what they do and did whatever they could to give the team the best chance of success in 2012. It was a small off field team, but big on quality and unity. Along with the staff we were fortunate to have a great Leadership team in Madonna Blyth, Teneal Attard, Jodie Schulz and Reggie Ashton. Each of these players led from the front and had a great influence on the QLD Scorchers Team. Lastly, to the players, thank you for your hard work and the many sacrifices you made in representing the QLD Scorchers in 2012. Thank you for embracing the HockeyQLD culture that was fostered and developed within the team. We cannot hide from the fact that in the end ‘we got what we deserved’, however, I was very proud of the way you performed at the tournament, how you learnt to stay composed, learnt to enjoy each contest, and learnt to stay in the contest until the very end. These lessons will be invaluable for the future as we seek to make the QLD Scorchers the number one team in Australia in 2013 and beyond. The following material accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless otherwise stated, have been adopted in the preparation of this financial report (a) Inventories Inventories consist of technical publications, merchandise and uniforms and are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. ( b) Employee Entitlements Provision is made for the Association’s liability for employee entitlements arising from services rendered by employees to balance date. NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 SEPTEMBER 2012 NOTE 1: STATEMENT OF ACCOUNTING POLICIES (c) Income Tax The Association considers that it is exempt from Income tax. The recoverable amount is assessed on the basis of expected net cash flows, which will be received from the assets employment and subsequent disposal. The expected net cash flows have not been discounted to present values in determining recoverable amounts. The depreciable amount of all fixed assets including capitalised leased assets, are depreciated over their estimated useful lives commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use. The depreciation rates used for each class of depreciable asset are: Buildings and facilities Fixtures and fittings Office equipment Plant and equipment (e) 3% - 40% 10% - 50% 10% - 40% 3% - 40% Revenue Revenue from the sale of goods and services is recognised upon the delivery of goods/provision of services to customers. Revenue from government grants and assistance is recognised on a proportional basis taking into account the period for which the grant is given. Interest revenue is recognised upon receipt. All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST). -644 Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2012 HOCKEY QUEENSLAND INC. NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 SEPTEMBER 2012 NOTE 1: STATEMENT OF ACCOUNTING POLICIES (f) Provisions The Association provides for employee entitlements as per Note 1(b) and for the ongoing maintenance/replacement of major facility assets. The provision for replacement and maintenance is reviewed annually by the board. The Board determines the need for provisioning in accordance with the need for likely future replacement or significant maintenance and sets aside a corresponding amount of surplus funds. The provision is reduced when the replacement/maintenance occurs or if surplus funds are no longer available to meet the provision. Movement in the provision account for other than spending on replacement/maintenance is recorded against accumulated funds. (g ) Change in Accounting Policy In 2011 certain disclosures in the Income Statement had been recorded on a gross basis as the Board was of the opinion this better reflected the cashflow of revenue and expenditure. In 2012, the Board has elected to record these transactions on a net basis. The decision to record transactions on a net basis is in accordance with the current accounting system and is consistent with the monthly accounting data presented to the Board throughout the year. -7Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2012 45 HOCKEY QUEENSLAND INC.
