KASERNE ON THE ROAD: UNIVERSITY OF BASEL
Old myths are combined with urban legends and mysterious anecdotes.
Under the direction of the puppet theatre maker Marius Kob, four story
tellers are transformed into legendary figures from the Finnish Kalevala
and weave a mystical, urban re-interpretation of this mythology.
When did you turn 21? What happened in that year? The long-term project
“21” has been turned into a video installation in which visitors can watch
and listen to people of all ages talking about their personal experiences
and narrowing the gap between the generations.

Together with the performer Julian Meding and the baroque ensemble
“Der musikalische Garten”, Boris Nikitin transforms probably the world’s
best known theatre work into an experimental music theatre performance.
A poetic revolt: raw, coarse, anti-social, enigmatic.
Schupp, Andereggen and Heller present an evening plotted from A to Z, an
evening full of truths, half-truths, probabilities, possibilities, realities and
little white lies interspersed with the totally unbelievable.
Scratching cards, picking numbers, buying tickets – after two months of
gambling full-time, FUX presents its final report as a stage performance.
The result is a documental revue of luck in which only the actual winnings
are used.

Messrs Häusermann, Ratschko and Ursin present a music-theatrical work
in five remarkable episodes. What starts off as a normal day in the radio
studio descends into chaos without any thought to ratings or their responsibility as broadcasters.
“Massacre” deals with the reduction and discontinuation of traditional
musical and choreographic structures and their excessive repetition. The
starting point for Bachzetsis’ latest work is the omnipresence of rituals in
contemporary culture.
Is it really possible to portray the life and crimes of the Belgian child murderer Marc Dutroux with children? In five simple exercises young people
aged eight to thirteen slip into various roles and examine painful private
and political experiences.
This season, Storm/Störmer once again go in search
of the worst ever works of art. Bad design, bizarre
biographies, nasty novels, brutal music and ghastly guidebooks – a collection of temptations which
Storm/Störmer will attempt to sail around and
navigate, before seeking solid ground as quickly
as possible.

“Gob Squad’s Kitchen”
The famous underground movie which Andy Warhol filmed with a few
friends in a New York apartment in 1965 is used by Gob Squad to revitalise
the ‘60s pop era. The audience is invited to join in with this reconstruction.

“Rentrer au Volcan”
TAKE THE BUS TO LA FILATURE IN MULHOUSE
BASEL COPRODUCTION / PREMIERE
Tabea Martin’s dance performance deals with the psychological manipulation of our daily lives through the permanent flood of information and
disinformation. Five performers manipulate, are manipulated and crave
for a moment of truth.
In his first stage performance, the images and objects of the photographer
and sculptor Augustin Rebetez run riot across the stage – the result is a
raw, vividly-rich concert performance consisting of clanking pianos and
humming doors.
Kaserne Basel regularly organises a bus shuttle service to take audience members to selected events
at the theatre La Filature in Mulhouse (F). This
season’s journey will take in, among other performances, “Speak low if you speak love” by Wim
Vandekeybus (14.12.) and “La Nuit des taupes (Welcome to Caveland!)” by Philippe Quesne (9.3.).
BASEL COPRODUCTION
COPRODUCTION
Marcel Schwald has adapted Gertrude Stein’s monumental family saga
“The Making of Americans” within the context of Europe as a continent of
emigrants, whilst bringing Stein’s situational humour to the fore.
Why is it so difficult to take a stance, when it is apparently obvious on
which side of the fence you sit? In his newest performance, Phil Hayes looks
at principles and what they represent in today’s world of compromises.

dances together with the star choreographer Boris Charmatz to Bach’s
“Partita No.2”, performed live by the violinist Amandine Beyer.
What do we know about Islam? Is it really impossible to combine its values
with those of the western, mostly Christian world? Now is the best opportunity for a crash course!

FESTIVAL / KASERNE BASEL & ROXY BIRSFELDEN
What’s so funny? In its third edition under the guidance of the Basel-based
director Boris Nikitin, the festival, the only one of its kind in Switzerland,
focuses on the dark clown of documentary: satire. The programme features
international guest performances, lectures, workshops and experimental
excursions.
GUEST PERFORMANCE
COPRODUCTION
After wishing to see themselves as “idealists” and liking the idea of being
referred to as “fundamentalists”, they now seem to know they are “selfish” – nothing else. Schauplatz International presents the last part of its
trilogy – a relentless ego trip into the exotic.
COPRODUCTION
Which movements occur when someone does not agree with the system,
but does not wish to throw stones? fleischlin/meser extract movement sequences from protests and excerpts from critical speeches and compose a
performative study of disagreement.

Which people, which bodies are invisible in our society? Jérôme Bel brings
together professionally trained dancers and Basel-based hobby dancers.
He therefore undermines the traditional system of representation and offers individuals the chance to be autonomous. Lively. Radical. Nice.

EDUCATIONAL DANCE PROJECT
Hochmair and Stemann use the original text to tell Werther’s tale from
their own personal perspective: tragic, funny, wonderful. The solo performance has been touring successfully since 1997 – and is now coming to a
Basel high school.
BASEL COPRODUCTION / PREMIERE
When someone does not return from a holiday abroad and transforms
their life radically in order to help others: Which emotions does this trigger? Why are they doing this and not someone else? An evening about the
volunteer movement and the state of emergency in Europe.
EDUCATIONAL DANCE PROJECT
BASEL DANCE FESTIVAL
Over a period of six months, three Basel school groups of different ages look
at the different perceptions of what is ‘home’. A part of the “Home” project,
they translate their stories into movement and use dance to explore what
it means to search for a feeling of home in today’s world.
COPRODUCTION
A nouveau-cirque group and a contemporary dance company come together in “Gute Pässe. Schlechte Pässe” to show the relationship between
the drawing of national borders and the longing for self-contained societies.
GUEST PERFORMANCE / CH PREMIERE
The latest work by Louise Lecavalier, an icon of contemporary dance, is
inspired by Italo Calvino’s novel “The Non-Existent Knight”. A piece that
fascinates audiences due to its unique qualities and language of movement somewhere between weightlessness, mechanical action and trance
accompanied by an ambient, electro and percussion soundscape.

U NIVERSITY OF BASEL
wildwuchs 2017 investigates the impact of living “inside” or “outside” our
society. How do you feel when you walk through the doors of a psychiatric
hospital as either a visitor or as a patient? And how do you cope with the
arrival of thousands of refugees at the borders?
Fun is both exciting and exhausting – fun parks are loud and bright. Lea
Moro translates the conceptions of such wonderful places into a dance performance and localises the centre of fun inside the human body.
