Another Successful Auction for Jr. Group of Goodwill
The Junior Group of Goodwill Auction, held on March 7 and
8, once again surpassed all previous auctions with total proceeds
of over $86,000. “The event has continued to grow each year,
surpassing the previous years. It has been a very successful
fundraiser for Goodwill thanks to the hard work of the Junior
Group volunteer ladies,” says Mike McBride, executive director
of Goodwill.
The two-day event, which was presided over by George Roman Auctioneers, generated over $64,000 to support Goodwill’s
job training and employment programs. Over 600 people attended the Friday evening gala at Stambaugh Auditorium which
included a live auction of new items, silent auction, Chinese
auction, basket raffle, 50/50 raffle, jewelry sale, vintage clothing
sale and hors d’oeuvres from Kravitz Catering.
The live auction featured 63 items which included custom
made Ohio State table and chairs by Gasser Chair, a Nanette
Lepore designer outfit, Disney park passes, a vintage mink coat,
a diamond ring and more.
The jewelry sale, which is always a crowd favorite, featured
several thousand pieces of pre-priced jewelry which was available for purchase on both Friday and Saturday. All of the jewelry
in the sale comes from Goodwill donations.
The vintage clothing sale continues to grow and has become a
A collection of John F. Kennedy items from Goodwill collectibles, an Abraham
Lincoln book donated and signed by Congressman Johnson, and a basket of
congressional items donated by U.S. Representative Tim Ryan are on display for
the Junior Group of Goodwill Auction at Stambaugh Auditorium. The items,
along with many other items donated by area businesses, were up for bid during
the live auction on Friday evening.
Dresses are displayed in the “Vintage Shoppe” section of the Junior Group of
Goodwill Auction at Stambaugh Auditorium. The vintage clothing sale portion of the event featured pre-priced dresses, coats, clothing, purses and other
ladies items. The vintage clothing was sold on both Friday and Saturday
bringing in over $2,100.
popular part of the event. All unsold pieces of the pre-priced
vintage clothing and furs, were made available for sale again
on Saturday.
The Saturday portion of the event featured an all day antique
and collectible auction of over 500 items. Items up for bid
were collected throughout the year from Goodwill’s eight donation centers. The Junior Group volunteers sort through select donations that are sent to them from the collection centers
and determine whether the item should go to the auction. Musical instruments, glassware, dolls, silver, vintage toys, furniture and artwork were just some of the items available. A gold
coin generated the highest bid at $675.
Sponsors for the event were Aim NationaLease, Gasser
Chair Co., Yurchyk & Davis CPA’s, USI Insurance, Republic
Services, PNC Bank, Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning
Valley, Fleming NationaLease, Simon Roofing, Vallourec
Star, Farmers Trust Company, On Demand Drug Testing and
Austintown Plaza, LTD. Proceeds from the auction are used to
help Goodwill’s meet its operational and capital needs in order
for Goodwill to continue to provide job training and employment services to people with disabilities and other barriers to
employment in the local community.

Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries Awarded Three-Year CARF Accreditation
CARF International announced that Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries has been accredited for a period of three years for its
comprehensive vocational evaluation services. The latest accreditation is the 15th consecutive Three-Year Accreditation that the international accrediting body, CARF, has awarded to Goodwill.
CARF surveyors made no recommendations, which signifies they did not identify any areas of nonconformance to the standards.
This extraordinary accomplishment is achieved by only 3% of CARF surveys worldwide.
This accreditation decision represents the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded to an organization and shows the organization’s substantial conformance to the CARF standards. An organization receiving a Three-Year Accreditation has put itself
through a rigorous peer review process. It has demonstrated to a team of surveyors during an on-site visit its
commitment to offering programs and services that are measurable, accountable, and of the highest quality.

Amblyopia Program in Need of Volunteers
As the Amblyopia Vision Screening Program of Youngstown
Area Goodwill Industries prepares for the upcoming school year,
they are always looking to add to the list of schools they currently
visit. “Our goal is to reach as many preschoolers as possible each
school year,” says Nancy Chambers, amblyopia program coordinator.
Lazy eye, the common name for amblyopia, is reduced vision in
an eye resulting when the pathways of vision in the brain do not
grow strong enough. Anything that interferes with clear vision in
either eye during the critical birth to age six visual development
period can cause amblyopia; neither the child nor parent may know
there is a problem until screening is provided. If not detected early
enough, an amblyopic eye may never develop good vision and may
become functionally blind. Early detection and treatment can correct an eye, which may be too damaged for correction at a later
time.
Last year, volunteer screeners visited 130 preschools in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties. Of the more than 2,400
children screened during the last school year, 423 were referred for

The Amblyopia Vision Screening Program, which is a service of
Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries, receives funding from The Hine Memorial Foundation, the Western Reserve Health Foundation, United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, The Youngstown Lions Club and Goodwill Industries.
If you are a school in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana County that is interested in having amblyopia screeners visit your
school, contact Nancy Chambers, amblyopia program coordinator, Tuesday or Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 330-759-7921.
