Just relaxing after a full on weekend of clogging at
Aussie Clog. It was a wonderful weekend catching up
and dancing with cloggers from North Qld,
Rockhampton, Bundaberg and many other interstate
cloggers as well as all of the Brisbane Clubs.
Some interesting new dances for us to learn.
Great weather, food and company.
The Saturday evening entertainment was fun. I loved
the demonstration by the Bundaberg cloggers – felt
like I wanted one of those pretty green tops! Thought
the Monte Carlo was fun as Myself and the other
Mary won a BIG choccie bar!!
At the concert after we were entertained by many
acts including golfers, letter that changed, Sunstate’s
Boomerang which wouldn’t come back, and many
more to make us all smile.
You will notice that in the Syllabus Olive always puts a
lot of effort to bring all Aussie wildlife into it, and we
loved the cassowary from Cairns – it has inspired a
painting for my wall.
Well done Olive and Frances and Co.
Our next big meet is at the 17 th national Convention
in Adelaide.
Looking forward to seeing many of you there.
P
Regular practice sessions every Saturday, plus an
extra evening session thrown in for good measure,
saw us as guest performers at the Logan City Seniors’
Expo at the Logan Entertainment Centre for a
morning and afternoon performance.
The upcoming Logan City Senior Superstar Contest
also received some valuable publicity from the
Team’s appearances.
Then, as winners of last year’s Senior Superstar Grand
Final, we were invited to be guest performers at this
year’s Grand Final in the Concert Hall at QPAC.
With a little help from Pauline and Ian, the show’s
MC’s, and Gregory, one of the Judges, the packed
auditorium was rapt in our performance, which
opened the show, and showed their appreciation
with sustained applause and woo-hoo’s of delight!
We came back toward the end of the show to
perform again, with the whole Team delighted at the
way our dance routine was received and
acknowledged.
P
See you on the floor again soon,
Forever dancin’

The weather may have been fine for Brisbane over
the past month, but the Team has been in a Clogging
whirlwind with a round of engagements, the number
of which gives telling testimony to the dedication to
and love of Clogging by our conscientious dancers.
Sincere thanks to each and every one of you.
A further thrill was switching on the Telly and seeing
ourselves on ABC Channel 2 7 p.m. News.
The Dickson Seniors Expo at Strathpine saw us lined
up for a lively demo, which had visitors tapping their
feet, and some quietly jigging along to the music.
Naturally, the opportunity was taken to hand out
Clogging brochures.
Sincere thanks to the talented ‘Sewing Bee’ who
produced our stunning costumes.
A visit to one of our regular places to perform- Cazna
Gardens Retirement Village- had us once again
receiving their generous thanks and applause.
A Probus Club invite was happily accepted, with many
of their members not being familiar with Cloggingand they loved it also!

Where else but in Brisbane would Cloggers get a
‘Good Morning’ from their Lord Mayor?
It’s nice to be acknowledged as we continue to do
our dancing in the Brisbane City Council
Administration Building whilst we await the
completion of restoration of our grand Brisbane City
Hall to which we shall return.
With Spring upon us and the weather heating up, our
regular band of happy hoofers are coming along in
force, with a beginners’ class starting promptly at
8:30 a.m. so the morning’s programme can be fitted
in without undue rush and bustle.
We are looking forward to the return to our
beginners’ ranks of Lyn H. following a bout of ill
health.
The level of dancing is Beginners to Intermediate
which suits the Cloggers who join us every Monday
morning.
Michael and Sally L. were welcomed back into our
midst after another of their regular sojourns
overseas.
With the three Leaders each taking a turn and
rotating on a weekly basis, this adds variety and
something special to our 50 Plus group of Cloggers.
Margaret H. is back up dancing after a wee accident
whilst helping to build a house no less!
Olive, Dian, Frances
As mentioned on previous occasions, if you are
looking for a special morning of Clogging, come and
join us at the Scouts Hall in Bradshaw Park,
Lamington Avenue, on the fourth Thursday of every
month (except December) for our regular monthly
party day.

We must be blessed, for even though the Red Cross
Hall where we have danced for many years is right
across the street from one of Brisbane’s busiest
Hospitals, our members and visitors still seem to be
able to find handy street parking of a Monday night.
John R., affectionately known as the ‘eggs and
magazines’ man, is coming good after a work-related
accident.
If you would like to hear a heart-warming story some
time, ask modest John to tell you about his farm for
abandoned and abused animals and feathered
friends. Visiting times are fairly limited as he also has
a family business to run, but this guy deserves a Gold
Medal for his kindness to and care of what he calls his
‘family’.
The Club celebrated our own version of the Brisbane
Ekka with cheese and crackers on arrival, followed by
a hot dog and ice cream with strawberries at our
supper break.
The night was organised by Shirley G. with help from
Del M. What great fun we had!

Hello everyone
“Next year hopefully is Auckland again. We’re
trying to find a venue, and for May again.”
That’s what I said in the last report – and
we’ve done it!
Auckland: out west this time.
A school college with 3 workshop areas.
Dates are May 3-4-5, 2013.
And we have an instructor from California,
USA. Who?? We will have registrations and all
information with us in Adelaide. Come and see
us.
We’re looking forward to the Adelaide
convention weekend.
We’ll be there Thursday night meeting up with
everyone again.
Best wishes to the committee for a very
successful convention.
Keep clogging and stay warm.

Come joins us at this year’s ACA National Convention for a special
Youth Clogging Workshop
22 September, 2012 - Adelaide, SA
What is it??
The Youth Clogging Workshop is a special session being held at this year’s ACA National
Convention in Adelaide. It’s an opportunity for Australia’s young cloggers to come together,
get a bit funky, and learn a cool, new routine!
Dancers will attend two sessions (approx. 1-2 hours each) on the Saturday, one session in
the morning and one in the afternoon; and will have the opportunity to perform their new
clogging routine together during the Saturday night exhibitions.
Who’s it for?
The Youth Workshop is open to all under 18’s.
How do you participate?
Just come to the ACA National Convention held in Adelaide on 21-23 September, 2012.
There’s no cost…it’s included with your ACA Convention entry fees!
Who are the instructors?
Josh & Della King will be coordinating and teaching the Youth Clogging Workshop.
Josh has been teaching clogging for more than 25 years, with a focus on youth classes and
teams. He has been a featured instructor at under-18 clog camps in the U.S. for many years,
and has directed, performed with, and choreographed for many youth performance and
competition teams.
Della is an experienced dance teacher, having previously owned and operated her own
dance school with students ranging in age from toddlers to adults. She currently teaches
youth classes in tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, and kinder dance.
Do you need a costume?
We’ll send out basic costume requirements closer to the Convention, but the plan is to keep
it simple. We’ll work off things most people will already have in their wardrobe!
THAT’S ALL!
Email [email protected] to let Josh & Della know if you or cloggers in
your group are interested in attending, or for more information.
See you in Adelaide!
A big HELLO and WELCOME to everyone coming to the 17th
National ACA Clogging Convention in Adelaide, 2012!
We, the Adelaide Committee, are very excited that the 17th National ACA Clogging Convention is nearly upon us. No doubt everyone who’s coming from around Australia and New Zealand are feeling much the same nervous excitement, with preparations for presentations, state dances and workshops in full swing. Everything has now been considered by the tireless Adelaide Convention Committee and we are in the last phase of putting it all together to host yet another national event. Yeehaah! We have received some great workshop choreography – thank you to everyone who put forward their work. It is great to see new choreography of this high quality. This year there will be a Youth Workshop run by Josh and Della King. The younger cloggers in the ACA community will be very pleased to have the opportunity to shine, thanks to this new initiative brought forward by Josh King for this year’s convention. And some breaking news for you… We are very pleased to announce that our guest instructor, Simone Nichols Pace, will be accompanied to Australia by her father Bill Nichols, who is considered in the international dance community to be the ‘grandfather of clogging’. <see Bill’s Bio in this newsletter>. It will be a great opportunity to have him in our midst for the duration, and to add to the program, Bill will be addressing the Teacher’s & Instructor’s Meeting about the history of clogging, along with our own Edith Sandy. There may be a few other surprises too, but you’ll just have to wait and see! A short reminder about the Welcome Dance on Thursday 20 September If you wish to attend the Welcome Dance, please make your way to the Woodville Town Hall, 74 Woodville Road, Woodville, located approximately 450 metres south of the St Clair Convention Venue, on the opposite side of the road. Dancing will commence at 7:30 pm and a basket supper will be provided by the South Australian clogging community. We do hope that as many of you as possible will come along to this event. Shoe taping will be required. The Saturday night ‘After Party’ – a fine tradition in clogging conventions for many a year… Sadly we haven’t had quite as many registrations for the After Party skits as we’d hoped for. We do hope (or rather, we BEG) that some of you might dig deep inside of you and consider coming up and doing a short skit, a reading, a string of jokes, play an instrument, sing, or just dress up and behave badly for a few short minutes! We’d especially love to see new people giving it a go. You realize now, that ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ auditions are the next step after this!! We’ve have had over 300 cloggers register for the convention now, so that’ll be a fair sized audience for your stage debut... Anyhow, please give us a call – we’d love to hear from you. Please phone Irmgard: (08) 8386 2593 or Mobile: 0413 453 250. Regards Paula Schetters on behalf of the ACA Convention Committee, Adelaide, Aug 2012 1400 Keats Dr #1416

Bill Nichols – affectionately known as the ‘Grandfather of Clogging’
Bill Nichols is a native of Graham County North Carolina (NC). Born in 1937 to parents of Scottish,
Irish, and German heritage.
Bill’s father worked for the Aluminum Company of America. When the construction of Tapoco dam
was completed the family moved to the Calderwood TN to work and live. Bill’s mother, father, and
both sets of grandparents danced. None of them however made music. The person who most
influenced his desire to dance was his mother.
Bill would visit Fontana Village during the construction of Fontana Dam. After construction many
visitors to Fontana were brought there by TVA to see the engineering marvel which had been built.
This was Bill’s first exposure to folk dance and folk music. These performances from around the
world gave Bill the desire to know his folk heritage of dance and music.
In 1955 Bill became employed by Fontana Village where he began a 35 year research project to
identify dances and music of the Appalachian area. Focusing mostly on the Southern Appalachian
area Bill soon came to realize the dance that identifies the people of this geographical area is the
large circle square dance. This type of dance comes from the old world 8 couple Sicilian Circle
dance and was adopted as the standard square dance formation in that area.
Later Bill and Garland Steele would combine forces and author a set of encyclopedias which would
encompass all of the Appalachian area. These books were published as an effort to identify and
preserve their mountain heritage. The books have sold out and now Bill and Garland are engaged in
an effort to publish a second printing.
During his tenure at Fontana Bill frequently travelled with the Fontana Ramblers square dance band
to Raleigh to attend the NC state fair. The Ramblers were the staff band for the folk festival during
this period. During these visits Bill won best clog solo on several occasions.
In the mid sixties Bill wrote the original vocabulary for the basic clogging which has been adapted
and is still used today.
In the early 70’s Bill co-founded the National Clogging and Hoedown Council and was the first
president. N.C.H.C. later merged with C.L.O.G. and now hosts the National Clogging Convention.
Bill is affectionately known worldwide as the “Grandfather of Clogging”. Bill and his wife Marie
now live in Easley, SC. They have 4 children, 10 grand children and 9 great grand children. He is
still involved in calling Southern Appalachian Square Dance and teaching Clogging.
