Applying to Private School
What you need to know about
Applying to Private School
W
-by Karen Finucan Clarkson-
“It breaks my heart when I get calls from
parents who have missed our deadline,” says
Patricia Garber, director of admissions at Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville. “It’s
important that parents begin their search well
in advance of our December deadline.”
Make sure the school is right for
your child
“Parents need to begin by educating themselves about the types of schools available and
considering what they want in terms of an education for their child,” says Esther Donawa,
head of school at Oxon Hill’s The Maryland
International Day School, a Spanish immersion school. “Then they need to put their ego
aside and be very honest with themselves in
terms of how their child will fit in a particular
educational environment.”
Fit is important, agrees Garber. “Just like
colleges and universities have different personalities, so too do the various schools within the
Archdiocese of Washington,” she says. “This is
a big financial commitment for the parents and
a major investment for the student, so it’s important to be sure that his or her needs and interests can be met. Not every school is right for
every child.”
For those considering a Catholic high
school, the archdiocese website (www.adw.org)
offers school profiles and links, as well as information about its spring high school fair. “The
fair is geared toward students not currently attending a Catholic elementary school,” says
Garber. “It’s a great way for them to start learning about us in their 7th-grade year.”
The best way to get a feel for a school is for
both parents and students to visit. “We have
open houses about twice a month from September to February. Parents come and sit in

on classes on Spanish days as well as English
days,” says Donawa. “We don’t take an application unless a parent has done this.”
Virtually all schools hold open houses and
strongly encourage parents to attend. Depending on the school, the open house may or may
not welcome students. Schools generally post
open house dates—which begin in the mid- to
late fall and at some schools continue into the
winter—on their websites.
At many schools, students are
given the opportunity to take a
test drive. “We call it ‘Mustang
for a Day,’” in recognition of the school’s mascot, says Garber. The
visit, in which a prospective student shadows a
current student, gives
the candidate a feel for the
campus, student body, teachers and administrators.
With the results of their research and visits in hand,
parents should decide—on
their own or in consultation
with their older students—
the schools to which they intend to apply. “Three schools
tops,” says Donawa. “There’s a
lot of stress—for both parent and
student—in applying to schools and, honestly,
students are too young to have to feel that stress.”
The Archdiocese of Washington concurs
with that assessment, allowing students to
apply to only two diocesan high schools and
one in an adjoining diocese. The co-choice system levels the playing field by preventing exceptional students from being accepted into
numerous schools. “It allows many more stu-

ith the private school application cycle nearing its end, now is a great
time for parents interested in placing their child in a school in fall
2012 to begin looking. Beginning almost a year ahead of the
application deadline may seem excessive to some, but school
administrators emphasize it is not.

dents—including some wonderful average
students who might otherwise have gotten
wait list letters—to be accepted,” says Garber.
Read all materials; prep for tests
While the application process is not
necessarily difficult, it can be time consuming. The requirements vary not only
by grade, but by school. Both Garber and
Donawa stress the importance of reading
the application package thoroughly, well in
advance of the deadline.
Private school applications can be a bit
like a puzzle with many little pieces that must
all be put together, says Judith Greenberg,
owner and director of School Finders, LLC,
which serves Maryland andVirginia suburbs,
and Washington, D.C.It’s not unusual for a
school to request letters of recommendation,
test results, a transcript, a student writing
sample and a medical history. Personal interviews with parents and, sometimes, with students may be required.
Some type of testing is also required.
Some elementary schools ask for results of
the WISC (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for
Children) or other intelligence tests. Others require standardized tests, such as the
CTBS Terra Nova. Schools generally will
not accept tests more than two years old.
“Even if not required, any test that shows
a level of intelligence in an objective way is
beneficial,” says Donawa.
At the middle and high school levels,
most independent schools require prospective students to take either the Secondary
School Admissions Test (SSAT) or the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE).
The majority of Catholic high schools require candidates to take the High School
Placement Test (HSPT), which is offered
the first two weekends of December.
“It’s important to remember that test
scores are just one facet (of admissions decisions),” says Garber. “We realize anyone
can have a bad day. That’s why we strive to
evaluate the whole child; why we ask for a
transcript and teacher recommendations.”

mendations can carry weight, according
to Donawa. “While it’s nice to know
what the parent thinks the child’s
strengths and weaknesses are, teacher
references help paint a picture in a more
objective way.”
Some schools require interviews
with the parent, the student or both,
although usually independent of each
other. At Bishop McNamara and The
Maryland International School, teachers and administrators assess students
but don’t formally interview them.
“We place kids in a classroom
with their peers,” says Donawa, “and
look at their social skills and how
they respond to the introduction of a
new language.”
“I interact with all students when
they come for their shadow visit,” says
Garber. “It puts less pressure on them
yet still allows me to get a feel for who
they are.”
Awaiting the news
While there are some schools that
admit students on a rolling basis,
most generally send notification letters to parents sometime between
early February and late March.
“Letters range from acceptance to
wait-list to denial,” says Garber. “It’s
important to read the letters and respond in a timely manner. An acceptance letter may require you to register
your child by a certain date, while a
wait-list letter may have certain conditions—such as notifying the school
that you want to remain on the wait
list and sending copies of future
grades as they become available.”
At The Maryland International Day
School, Donawa places personal phone
calls to all parents to let them know the
school’s decision.
“We don’t want parents sitting on
pins and needles,” she says. “We let
them know as quickly as possible, usually within three weeks, what their
child’s status is.”
For those whose children are not
accepted, both Donawa and Garber
suggest that parents try to find out
why. “It doesn’t hurt to ask for feedback,” says Garber, “particularly if
you think you may apply for the following year.”
While the competition generally is
stiffer for grades above kindergarten
for elementary, sixth for middle, and
ninth for high school, those who apply
the lessons learned during the initial
application process may well see their
child accepted into the school of his
or her choice.
