GATEWAY TO THE CENTRAL COAST
Santa Clara County
Often called “The Gateway to the Central Coast,” travelers
are increasingly discovering that the Santa Clara Valley is
worth more than just a quick stop. The communities of
Gilroy and Morgan Hill are surrounded by an iconic
California landscape of rolling hills filled with outdoor
recreation: seven world-class golf courses, numerous
lakes, and county, state, and national parks.
Talented chefs at local restaurants take advantage of the
bounty grown at area farms, including the south county’s
most famous crops: garlic and mushrooms. The Santa
Clara Valley is also one of California’s oldest wine-producing
regions, offering casual and picturesque wine-tasting.

Mention Gilroy and a single word comes to
mind: garlic. That's because the annual Gilroy
Garlic Festival has grown into one of the nation's most famous food celebrations and has
helped the community earn the title of “Garlic
Capital of the World.”
Garlic has a year-round home in Gilroy’s revitalized downtown of historic buildings and quaint antique shops. You can
dig into garlic-laced dishes at Garlic City Café, historic Old
City Hall Restaurant and at local favorites, OD’s Kitchen and
Station 55. The Milias Restaurant dates back to 1922 and
blends the unique history of the days when it was a destination for traveling Hollywood stars with artisan cocktails and
contemporary dining.
Garlic put Gilroy on the map, but another local highlight is
the drive out Hecker Pass. Visitors can photograph the “Field
of Dreams” at Syngenta Flowers, where the company grows
experimental flowers–many of them one of a kind. Gilroy
Gardens Family Theme Park is another local horticultural destination with more than 40 attractions, including six majestic
gardens. The Park’s world-famous Circus Trees are living
sculptures created by intricate grafting techniques.
While on Hecker Pass, you can enjoy tours and tastings
at award-winning wineries that have brought the valley’s
19th century winemaking tradition into the new millennium.
Continuing on Hecker Pass, visitors can enjoy the beautiful
and culturally significant Chitactac-Adams County Park or the
majestic Mt. Madonna County Park and recreation area.

Gilroy Historical Museum
The Gilroy Museum is housed in the historic 1910
Carnegie Library Building, the result of a $10,000
grant from Andrew Carnegie. The classic revival style
building was designed by well-known California architect
William H. Weeks. Admission to the Museum is FREE and
it is staffed on a voluntary basis by members of the Gilroy

Old Mission San Juan Bautista
Founded June 24, 1797. This mission was one of four established by Fr. Lasuen, and the 15th of the 21 missions
in the state of California. In June 1803, the cornerstone
was laid for the present church. With three naves or ailes,
it became the widest of all the mission churches. As you
walk through the church, please note the animal prints in
the tiles which were made while the tiles were left outside
to dry in the sun.

Pinnacles National Monument
Pinnacles National Monument gets its name from rock spires
and crags that are remnants of an ancient volcano. The volcano
eroded over millions of years as it moved northward along
the San Andreas Fault. Rock debris in the form of boulders has
weathered and settled, leaving behind spires of volcanic rock and

Mt . Madonna County Park
Mt. Madonna County Park is one of the most majestic of Santa
Clara County’s regional park and recreation areas. The park
overlooks the Santa Clara Valley to the east and Monterey Bay
to the west. As the slopes of Mt. Madonna descend toward
the valley, the landscape changes from redwood forest to oak
woodland, dense chaparral and grassy meadows.

Chitactac-Adams County Park
This beautiful and culturally
significant 4.3-acre park site
is located just minutes from the
cities of Gilroy and Morgan
Hill. The park features the
beautiful Uvas Creek and
a wealth of cultural artifacts
including bedrock mortars and
petroglyphs left by the Ohlone Indians. The park includes a
self-guided interpretive walk and an interpretive shelter focusing
on Ohlone Indian culture, and the Adams schoolhouse which
was sited on this property from the 1850s until 1956.

Coyote Lake/Harvey Bear Ranch
This 4,595-acre park, nestled in the Diablo Range east of
Gilroy, features a 635-acre lake, camping and boat launch
facilities, and 35 miles of horse, bicycle and hiking trails

ridgelines, providing spectacular views of the south Santa
