Voices is published four times a year to report
school and alumnae news to parents, alumnae,
and friends of Ursuline Academy.
Dear Ursuline Community,
I hope you enjoy this issue of Voices, chronicling the Happy Days that we are
blessed with at the end of every academic year. Endings and new beginnings
always bring to mind a beloved entreaty that comes from the Eighth Counsel of
St. Angela: “Love all equally…they are all creatures of God. You do not know what God
wants to make of them.”
We celebrated the accomplishments and contributions of the 166 members of
the Class of 2014 at graduation on May 28. This class of talented and passionate
young women earned over $26.8 million in college scholarships. I know
that they will all make us proud, and I hope they will return to their home at
Ursuline in the years to come to share what God has made of them.
With immense gratitude, we celebrated the retirement of three wonderful
members of the Ursuline Faculty: English teacher and alumna Ms. Jan Graham
'68, Guidance Counselor Ms. Amy Hermanns, and Fine Arts teacher Ms.
Patrice Trauth. We also bid a fond farewell to Ursuline Scheduler and alum
Ms. Suzanne Hiernaux Bryce '84 and English teacher Ms. Justine Hendy.
We are grateful for their ministry of educating the young women whose
education is entrusted to us.
Finally, we express our deepest gratitude to the two departing members of
the Ursuline Board of Trustees: past parent Ms. Monica Donath Kohnen
and alum Ms. Kathy Broderick Selker '73. Their counsel and devotion to
Ursuline has been immeasurable. We hope they won’t be strangers.

Zenab was also presented with the Archbishop McNicholas Memorial Award, which is presented to the student who is voted by
her classmates and by the Faculty as being the outstanding member of the class. The factors that are considered in this voting are
scholastic achievement, service to others, and character.
On the evening of May 28, the members of the Class of 2014
graduated from Ursuline Academy. Six graduates were recognized for their accomplishments and impact on their fellow
classmembers.
The Senior Scholar Awards were presented to the students who
have maintained the highest cumulative GPA during their high
school years. The Senior Scholar Awards for the Class of 2014
were presented to Shannon Kronenberger, Alisabeth
Marsteller, and Elizabeth Tyger.
The Graduation Address was delivered by Zenab Saeed, who
was selected by her classmates to speak at Graduation. Zenab
referenced Antoine de Saint Exupery’s Le Petit Prince in her
speech. “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what
is essential is invisible to the eyes…From our Catholic education, we have discovered all that is essential but invisible to the
eyes. Though we stand at different places with God and our
relationships with Him continue to mature, our spirituality
has developed and will continue to guide us through the years,
challenges, and triumphs to come. Personally, I am amazed by
the growth of my own spirituality: although my profession of
faith as a Muslim is different from many of my classmates, my
Catholic education has taught me immeasurable truths about
God, love, and community. I remember sitting with my peers
to celebrate mass one morning and finding the words of a
liturgical song lingering in my mind. We are called to love tenderly. We are called to serve one another, to walk humbly with God.
As a class, we understand the importance of a strong community built on a foundation as powerful as God. I can only thank
Ursuline for providing a place to love tenderly, serve others,
and walk humbly with God.”
The Christian Leadership Award is presented to the student in
each class who demonstrates evidence of Gospel values in her
personal and school community life. Some of these values are
care, concern and compassion for others, honesty, faith, hope,
and integrity. This student, by her love and willingness to include
others, takes every person seriously. This award is voted on by
students and by Faculty. The Christian Leadership Award for
2014 was presented to Allison Hogan.
Since Ursuline celebrated its centennial seventeen years ago, the
school has presented the Centennial Spirit Award to a student
at graduation. This award is presented solely on the vote of the
Faculty. The purpose of this award is to recognize a student who
has been an inspiration to the Faculty because she embodies the
core values of an Ursuline education and best exemplifies those
qualities we call the “Spirit of Ursuline.” The Centennial Spirit
Award for 2014 was presented to Kelly Gusweiler.

issue, we couldn’t decide between Patti and Judy — and how could we?!
Patti and Judy co-chair the Development Committee, they’ve both served
as Ursuline’s Special Events Coordinator, and they share a birthday!

Patti Alderson
Tell us a little about your day job.
I am President of Designeers Midwest, a local technical and professional
staffing and recruitment agency. We provide contractors to businesses in
the tri-state area and nationwide for temporary and direct positions.
I work with businesses to customize their staffing solutions and source
for qualified candidates. I have 10 years of staffing experience, a BSEE
from Purdue and an MBA from Xavier University. I am the first nonfamily member to run the nearly 50-year old company.
Tell us a little about your day job.
In 1999, before I left Ursuline, I started the Community Foundation of West
Chester/Liberty. I serve as CEO of this organization that is the charitable
hub for our community. While at the Foundation, it became clear that there
was a need for a Boys & Girls Club to serve our area. Together, with our
Boys & Girls Club of West Chester/Liberty Board, we have spear-headed
the effort to open a Club in our community. I also serve on the Ursuline
Foundation Board and the Board of the National Voice of America Museum
of Broadcasting.
On what Ursuline Board of Trustees committees do you serve?
I am on the Development and Finance Committees at Ursuline.
What is your connection to Ursuline and how did you get
involved with the Board?
I am an Ursuline Alumna and I worked as the Special Events Coordinator
at Ursuline for several years. I ran the Auction and House Raffle where I
was trained by Patti Alderson! John Lame and Sharon Redmond asked me
to serve on the Board and the timing was perfect. I have 3 sons and while
I enjoyed being involved at their high school my heart was always with
Ursuline and I was ready to give back to UA.
What is your proudest Ursuline moment?
My proudest Ursuline moments happen yearly at Ursuline’s graduation.
I take pride in attending Ursuline’s graduation as a Board member to witness and congratulate the true accomplishments of each Ursuline graduate. It is a time to reflect on the graduate’s four years, how they have
grown as individuals and how an Ursuline education has formed them
as they continue on in life. I am amazed at all the opportunities ahead
of them and hope they embrace each one. It gives me time to reflect on
how UA has helped to shape who I am today and the solid foundation it
gave me.
What has been the biggest change you’ve seen at Ursuline
since you first became involved?
The biggest change I have seen at Ursuline is the physical facilities. I
started working here in 1999 and I think the same carpet was in the
entry way and cafeteria hallway as when I graduated in 1978! Today the
classrooms in the main wing are more defined. The main wing classrooms were only divided by a couple cabinets each when I attended UA.
I am impressed with the state of the art technology in the classrooms and
new science labs. However, Ursuline’s end result of an educated, wellbalanced, developed young lady prepared for college has never changed
in my years with Ursuline.

On what Ursuline Board of Trustees committees do you serve?
I Co-Chair the Development Committee with my good friend, Judy Wells.
What is your connection to Ursuline and how did you get
involved with the Board?
In 1988, our oldest daughter, Mandi was accepted to Ursuline Academy. In
1992, our second child, Shellie began her journey at Ursuline. At that time,
Shirley Speaks was President. During Mandi’s time at Ursuline, I was on
the Mothers’ Club Board. When Shellie started, Mrs. Speaks began asking
me to Chair the Ultimate Auction. It wasn’t something that I yearned to do,
but because I held Shirley in such high regard I said, “Yes.” I was chairing the
1996 Ultimate Auction when Lois Wenstrup, the Special Events Coordinator, announced that her husband had received a transfer and she would be
leaving immediately. So, Shirley called me into her office and said I have
good news and bad news. Bad news…Lois is leaving. Good news…we want
you to take her job. The rest is history! I held the position for 5 years and it
was a wonderful learning experience for me! I resigned my position when
Mrs. Speaks left….Judy Wells replaced me! Several years later, I was very
honored when Sharon Redmond asked me to join the Board. I love Ursuline
and am so proud of what it does for the young women who are educated
here….so, of course, I said “yes.”
What is your proudest Ursuline moment?
Actually, I have three. The first two are when Mandi & Shellie graduated.
The third took place in 1997, when I finally sold that 4,000th Dream
House Raffle Ticket for the first House Raffle in Cincinnati that actually
gave away a HOUSE!
What has been the biggest change you’ve seen at Ursuline
since you first became involved?
Through the years, the exceptional education that our young women have
received has never wavered. However, the financial stability of Ursuline has
vastly improved. We are in a much better place now than we were twenty
years ago.

“Tell us about the evolution of SpiritWeek!
When did it begin and how has it changed
over the years?”

Dear Mimi and Zeina,
All I know for certain is that when I graduated in 1965 there
was no Spirit Week, and when I came to work at Ursuline in
1995, there was one. My guess is that Spirit Week took shape
during the extraordinarily long tenure of Student Council moderators Cathi Schellhous and the late Nick Deters. At sixteen
years, they hold the record.
In 1979-80, they initiated the linchpin of Spirit Week, The Walk.
“Trek” might be a better word as the route wound a lengthy ten
miles through Blue Ash and Montgomery. “Nick and I plotted it
out on a map,” remembered Cathi Schellhous. “We took them
over Creek, down Deerfield, into Montgomery. It was ridiculous.” After the inaugural walk, the route kept getting shorter
and shorter until it eventually settled into the more reasonable
range of a 5K.
For them it is a week of putting out fires, unending logistical
challenges, and constantly channeling the tribal competitiveness of the four classes to a higher level. In general, they succeed
brilliantly. Let us thank those brave souls without whose patience
and stamina there would be no Spirit Week. This list goes back
to the mid 70s. If some brave moderator has been inadvertently
omitted, we sincerely apologize.

Enter the Penny Race! Originally pennies were collected in
giant glass jars that ultimately could not withstand the weight of
the coins, Cathy Schellhous recalls. When the jars were turned
upside down in Principal Shirley Speaks’ office, a torrent of
pennies and broken glass followed, making the hand counting
not only tedious but perilous. Nick Deters’ limited patience
with this process led to the renting of a coin counter and eventually to the bank taking over the responsibility.
There are an infinite number of Spirit Week back stories. As
much as the students enjoy the eardrum-shattering shenanigans,
the faculty moderators experience it on another level entirely.

Annual Mother
Daughter Luncheon
Every year the Ursuline Mothers’ Club hosts the
graduating seniors and their mothers at a Mass and
luncheon. The event is enjoyed by all who attend,
especially the mothers who are also Ursuline alumnae
and attended a similar event with their mothers upon

Vester Scholars
Alisabeth Marsteller '14 and Paige Kebe '14
Ursuline is proud to congratulate Paige Kebe '14
and Alisabeth Marsteller '14 who were the 2014
recipients of the Linda Vester Ivy League Scholarship.
This scholarship program was made possible through
the generosity of Linda Vester Greenberg '83 and
her husband Glenn Greenberg. The purpose of this
program is to encourage qualified Ursuline students
to attend Ivy League colleges.
The idea for the scholarship came from Linda’s
experiences as a student at Ursuline Academy when
she learned how financially prohibitive it was for
qualified students to attend Ivy League colleges. The
scholarship program has been in place since 2001.
After the committee of administrators and counselors reviews applications and makes a recommendation the graduates are awarded $15,000 per year for

four years of undergraduate Ivy League study. Linda
and Glenn hope that such scholarships will enable
Ursuline graduates to attend Ivy League colleges or
universities that would be otherwise unattainable.
Paige will attend Harvard College where she plans to
study business or pursue a medical track. Paige was
a National Merit Finalist, President of Hands Across
the Campus, and Captain of the Ursuline Volleyball
team.
Alisabeth will attend Princeton University where
she will study engineering. At graduation Alisabeth
received the Senior Scholar Award, the award given
to the three students who maintain the highest cumulative GPA during their high school years. Alisabeth
was a member of the Ursuline Swim team.

Ursuline bids farewell to
retiring Faculty members
Ursuline Principal, Mr. Tom Barhorst, with retiring Ursuline Faculty members, Ms. Amy Hermanns, Ms. Patrice Trauth, and Ms. Jan Graham, and
Ursuline President, Ms. Sharon Redmond.
Congratulations and farewell to three beloved members of the
Ursuline Faculty who retired at the end of the 2013-2014 academic year. These three members of the Ursuline community
were honored at the annual Faculty Dinner on May 21.
Ms. Jan Graham '68 was a member of the Ursuline English
Faculty for 28 years, in addition to being an Ursuline alum.
She inspired thousands of students with her love of poetry
and language, and will be remembered for her ability to bring
words to life through props and more permanent classroom
installations. “Jan has touched so many lives,” Ursuline President Sharon Redmond said. “She found a way to enhance every
book, every poem, every story, whether it was mason jars of
flowers or the barn siding she brought in for ‘Animal Farm.’
Jan will be missed.”
Ms. Amy Hermanns has served as a member of the Ursuline
Guidance Department for 13 years. She has assisted numerous
Ursuline students in the college application process, ensuring

family legacy. “Something I’ve always admired is that, like me,
Amy was inspired by her father who also committed his life to
education,” Mr. Barhorst said. “She made education a family career, and I know that her father is very proud of the work Amy
has done in her time at Ursuline.”
Ms. Patrice Trauth has instructed Ursuline students in mixed
media and 3D design and sculpture for 16 years. Her energy
and passion for the creation of art that will inspire others has
been a guide to many students during their time at Ursuline.
“Patrice has always believed in making things better,” said Ursuline President Sharon Redmond. “She’ll encourage her students
to make their piece better, she’ll push herself and others to
make the department better, and we are so blessed to have her
piece Angela’s Journey hanging outside of the St. Angela Chapel.

Monica Donath Kohnen
Ursuline is grateful for the six years of committed
work championed by two retiring members of the
Ursuline Board of Trustees, Ms. Monica Donath
Kohnen and Ms. Kathy Selker '73.
In her time on the Board, Monica Donath Kohnen
has served as Chair of the Compensation Committee,
and as a member of the Governance and Executive
Committees. Monica has been an asset to the Board in
her efforts to uphold the mission and values handed
down from the Ursulines of Brown County as the
guiding light of the school. She is a partner at the law
firm Graydon Head & Ritchey LLP, and has brought

the proud mother of two Ursuline graduates, Erika

Kathy Broderick Selker '73 joined the Ursuline
Board in 2011 and since then has enhanced Ursuline’s
understanding and execution of branding and promotion. As CEO and Owner of Northlich, an advertising
and marketing agency, Kathy has enhanced the conversation of the Marketing Committee with well-grounded, research-based strategy that will serve the school
for years to come.

At the annual Faculty Recognition Dinner on May 21,
Ursuline awarded the Sister Xavier Ladrigan Excellence in
Education Award to World Languages Faculty member,
Dr. Lynda Hoffman-Jeep.
The Sister Xavier Ladrigan Award was inaugurated in 1992 to
honor Sr. Xavier as she retired from the Board of Trustees. She
was largely responsible for the move to Blue Ash in 1970 and
devoted her entire life to education. The award is presented
each year to a deserving individual with the knowledge and
Dr. Hoffman-Jeep was nominated by parents, students, and fellow faculty. She was especially lauded for her commitment to
and establishment of the Academic Foreign Exchange program.
“Academic exchanges stand in stark contrast to the typical
‘trips’ that are offered by companies,” explained Dr. HoffmanJeep.
“Those tours have students traveling by bus from site to site,
to jump out and visit a museum or castle, but have little or
no intimate and committed contact with local individuals and
educational institutions. Academic exchanges provide deeper
and lasting experiences for the mind, heart, and soul.”
Currently Ursuline participates in exchanges with three
sister schools: St. Ursula Gymnasium in Aachen, Germany,
St. Joseph Lycee in Reims, France, and Villa Maria Academy
in Santiago, Chile.
Congratulations to Dr. Hoffman-Jeep and thank you for your
dedication to your students and to Ursuline.

Academic Awards
Each year, Ursuline celebrates the academic achievements of many students who have
represented Ursuline through external awards, as well as students who have shown
leadership in Ursuline classrooms. On May 14, Ursuline was proud to recognize the
148 students who excelled during the 2013-2014 school year.
At the ceremony, the top three students in the Freshman, Sophomore,
and Junior classes were announced. In the Class of 2017, in alphabetical order, were Kristyn Aiello, Rani Bawa, and Abigail Klare.

In the Class of 2015 Rebecca Allen, Emily Hellmann, and
Grace Kelly.
Also at the ceremony, Ursuline recognized students
receiving The Christian Leadership Award. The
Christian Leadership Award is given every year to
a student in each class who demonstrates Gospel
values in her personal and in her school community
life. Some of these values are: care, concern and
compassion for others, honesty, faith, hope, integrity.
This student, by her love and willingness to include
others, takes every person seriously, just as Jesus did.
Because of these values, she is recognized as a leader
by her classmates. This award is given by peer nomination and is awarded by peer vote. The recipients of
this year’s Christian Leadership Award were Neha
Damania '17, Courtney Ruehlmann '16, and
Grace Lamantia '15.
Additionally, Ursuline announced the members of the Junior Class who were recipients of different awards given
by colleges across the country. Sometimes known as “Book Awards,” these awards are based on a certain set of
criteria determined by each college or university. Those students were Rebecca Allen, Erica Behrens,
Allison Brady, Carmen Carigan, Allison Carter, Katherine Edmondson, Lauren Fleming, Mattina
Girardot, Emily Hellmann, Clair Hopper, Colleen Johnston, Grace Kelly, Mary McGrath,
Audrey Phipps, Kila Tripp, and Meaghan Wheeler.

On May 8, the Ursuline Academy Music Department presented their Spring Concert. Students in
Women’s Choir, Beginning Guitar, Show Choir, Concert Orchestra, Sinfonia, and A’Cappella Choir performed a strong and broad repertoire delighting and entertaining the friends, family, faculty,
and fellow students who were in attendance. The evening was dedicated to the late Mallory Naab
who was a member of Ursuline Class of 2004 and a dedicated member of the
Ursuline Academy Music Department.

mission trip to South Dakota
In partnership with Re-Member, an independent non-profit organization on the Pine Ridge Indian
Reservation in South Dakota, 18 Ursuline students spent a week rebuilding homes, experiencing
cultural immersion programs, and learning about the Lakota People. Thanks to the group chaperones, Community Service Coordinator Ms. Krista Diehl, Choral Director Ms. Amy Clark, and
Social Studies Faculty member Mr. John Gerhardt.

Golden Laurel Guild Celebration
Ursuline was proud to welcome the members of the Golden Laurel
Guild, and celebrate the newest members, the Class of 1964, on
Friday, June 13, 2014. All Ursuline alumnae who have celebrated their 50th reunion are invited to this annual event.

Ursuline was excited to welcome back the classes of 1964, 1969, 1974,

from UC DAAP in graphic design and Jenna graduated from the University of Michigan with
her MSE in Industrial and Operations Engineering. While in Europe together, they met up with
Ashley, who graduated from Ohio University with a degree in English and German and a minor
in Spanish. Ashley is living in Rostock, Germany, as a participant in the Fulbright Program.

It was a cold windy April day at Trump National Golf Club in
Bedminster New Jersey, but quite a warm reunion for these Ursuline
classmates from 2012. Megan Tenhundfeld '12, a sophomore
Finance/Accounting major from Seton Hall, is a member of the
hosting team at the Seton Hall Invitational. Meghan Garanich '12,
a sophomore Biology/Classics major on the Pre-Health track at
Bucknell University, was on one of the 18 teams competing in this
tournament. Two weeks following this tournament, both contributed
to their teams’ conference championships.

Maria Tamborski '05, recently finished her fourth year
of medical school at Vanderbilt University. On Match Day,
the day when all fourth year students find out where
they’ll do their residency, Vanderbilt invites families
for a ceremony where a student’s residency location is
announced in front of everyone. Maria asked her sister
Diana Tamborski '14, to come on stage and announce
her match: Emergency Medicine at UCLA.
Bridget Blood '13 and Temi Tomley '14 were teammates on the Lions Swim Team, and are now swimming together at The University of Alabama. Bridget
says “Ursuline has prepared me to tackle any obstacle
that comes, but my first year far from home, my
family, and most of my UA sisters was tough. It is nice
