The Journey of a
Donated Wheelchair
Harding Medical received a
touching email from Ted Grant, the
President of the Mikinduri Children
of Hope organization, describing
what became of a donated
wheelchair. The email recounted
the following story:
“Four years ago, Harding Medical
donated a wheelchair to our
organization, which we took to
Kenya and had available at our
medical clinics in February 2009.
A young girl (pictured with Dr. Jan
Rogerson) came to the clinic carried
by her mother. The girl was severely
physically handicapped, to the
extent that the only way she could
get to school is if her mother carried
her. She was very bright and very
intelligent.
When she came to the clinic, she
did so because she had heard that
we had wheelchairs. When I saw
her in the line and asked her what
it was that she was looking for, she
quickly replied; “My mother can’t
carry me to school anymore, unless
something changes I will have to
quit school, so I came to ask you
if you would have a wheelchair for
me.”
Fortunately, we had been given
the small sized wheelchair from
your organization, which was very
appropriate for her tiny body.
We gave her the wheelchair and
she thanked us abundantly. Like
many other people who I have
encountered in my work in Kenya, I
had not heard from her again until
last year’s medical clinics.
It was a very busy day in February
2012, at our medical clinics, but
someone told me that there was a
visitor at the gate who wanted to
talk to me. This happens often, and
many times it is somebody who
wants to get a special favor, to jump
6
the line, etc. However I decided
to investigate, and found my little
disabled friend, whom I sat down
with and chatted. She said, “I came
to thank you for making such a
difference in my life.” I remembered
that we had given her a wheelchair,
but I wasn’t sure that she was
referring to that, so I questioned
her as to how I made a difference in
her life, she responded by saying,
“I was in a situation where I was
going to have to quit school, but
because you gave me the wheelchair
I was able to continue on, I am
now in grade 12, and I am planning
on attending university to get my
degree in engineering. So thank you
for allowing me this opportunity.”
The credit for this amazing story
of how one person can make a
difference in the life of another in a
country so far away has nothing to
do with me, but rather the people
at Harding Medical who made this
wheelchair available. It is you who
changed her life not me.

Valentine’s Day Bake Sale
Spring 2013
On February 14th, 2013, the InnotechExecaire Aviation Group hosted a
Valentine’s Day bake sale. The bake
sale raised $1,105.23, which added
with other activities, payroll contributions and a corporate donation of
$5,000 for a grand total of $28,874.58
this year. Congratulations everyone! Ann Belair & Jennifer Godinho decided that since last year’s event was a
great success, why not do it again? A raffle took place
with some excellent prizes donated courtesy of Execaire,
Simontech Placement Agency, Ristorante Portovino, and
Jack Astor’s Bar & Grill Restaurant. Five lucky winners
won the following prizes: first place prize (2) tickets to
the Montreal Canadiens game versus the Carolina Hurricanes on February 18th, 2013. Second place prize was a
custom car detailing package (interior & exterior). Third
place prize was a gift card for Jack Astor’s Bar & Grill
restaurant. Fourth & fifth place prizes were gift cards to
dine at Ristorante Portovino. In addition, Lafrenaie specialty cakes donated ten cakes to this wonderful event.
A big thank you to all those who participated in this
event, whether it was by tasting, baking or volunteering,
without your collaboration, it wouldn’t have been possible. Thank you to all the sponsors for their generous
donations!

Feed Nova Scotia - Quilt Winner
Jane Taylor-Moffatt, the Engineering Administrative Assistant at IMP Aerospace, is always one to help out and lend
a hand. This past year was no different when, for the third
year in a row, their own quilter extraordinaire, donated her
time and effort in support of Feed Nova Scotia by selling
tickets on a handmade quilt she created.
This year’s winner of the Feed Nova Scotia Quilt was
Rob Waring of 6 Hangar. Through her generous efforts,
Jane raised $815.00 in support of Feed Nova Scotia. The
funds were donated to Feed Nova Scotia before Christmas

On this most festive of Holidays, a few members of
the CanJet team put together a plan to get everyone
into the spirit – with the “6 Days of Festivus” event.
The kick off event provided staff with a chance
to view the “The Strike” – the Seinfeld episode that
featured the original Festivus Celebration. They had
4 showings in the main boardroom, complete with
freshly popped popcorn served up by members of the
HR team.
A mid week casual day was added to the month of
December, and in the spirit of giving, anyone who
participated was asked to bring in a toonie ($2). Each
participant was able to submit the name of their
favorite charity with their donation – The Children’s
Help Phone, receiving the most nominations, was
given 100% of their casual day donations. They also
held an ugly sweater competition (entitled “Casual
Friday gets UgLy”), a re-gifters gift exchange, a
Festivus Potluck, and a gingerbread house decorating
competition.
The gingerbread house competition was taken
a little more seriously than intended. Six teams
entered - comprised of single entries (Candy Land),
entire departments (Twisted Sisters, Sugar Momma’s,
and Gingerbread Dynasty), and interdepartmental
groups (Caught In Candy and Team Legendary). The
only rules were that the basic kit provided had to be
used, and the teams had to be the ones to construct
the building. From there it was anything goes – and
anything did! They had everything from classic/
traditional houses, to spoofs of TV shows/movies,
to a model of the HIAA (Halifax International
Airport). The winning entry was Gail Christopher’s
Candy Land. Gail won a $20 Tim Horton’s gift Card.
Congratulations Gail!!
The various CanJet Bases also got into the spirit,
hosting CanJet Coffee Breaks once a week during the
month of December. Coffee, muffins and donuts
were provided, and each “coffee break” included
a draw for a $25 gift card for anyone that attended
the event. The festivities were well attended by
Operations, Crew and Management.
They hope to be able to have more events like these
through the advent of their new social committee in
2013.

Accolades to
Atlantica Oak Island Employee
Dear Sir or Madame:
A few weeks ago I came into the
Atlantica [Hotel and Marina Oak
Island] around one thirty in the
morning in quite a panic. My
son had used our code word
indicating that he was in a situation
and needed to be picked up
immediately.
My gas tank was past empty and
the gas indicator light was on when
I left my home. I had driven as far
as the Atlantica without success. I
was afraid that I was in the wrong
area altogether and I didn’t have the
luxury of driving around to look for
him where my gas was nearly gone.
I was in quite a predicament!
I went into the Atlantica and
Ranier was SO kind to me. He let
me use the phone to call my son’s
cell phone over and over again and
when my son wasn’t answering,
Ranier suggested that I phone the
police, explain the situation, and
ask them to find my son. It was
so nice to have someone thinking
rationally at that moment because
I was beside myself with worry
and starting to panic! At Ranier’s
suggestion, I called the police.
The wait, although short, was
unbearable as I was so worried.
The police soon called and told me
where my son was and I was able to
pick him up and get him home safe
and sound.
I’m sure you already know what a
lovely man Ranier is, but I wanted
to draw your attention to his
kindness to me that night. Ranier is
a true credit to your establishment.
In this day when helping another
person is a vanishing commodity,
it is nice to know that there is
someone named Ranier who is

IMPulse
IMP Group helped raise over
$234,000 in support of The Arthritis
Society, with the HSBC Celebrity
Roast honouring Stephen Plummer,
Group President & CEO of IMP. The
highlight of the event, was the video,
shared by a ‘friend,’ of Mr. Plummer
gallantly winning the Mister Dance
Contest many years ago at a resort in
Mexico.
Many of IMP’s suppliers provided
items to be auctioned, which helped
this event become the top national
fundraiser, providing funding for
arthritis

Employment Equity - Aerospace Participates in Immigrant
Settlement & Integration Services (ISIS) Programming
Ivan Vallejo
As part of IMP Aerospace’s
commitment to employment equity
initiatives, the Aerospace division
participated in a six-week work
placement program through the
Immigrant Settlement & Integration
Services (ISIS). ISIS’s Workplace
Placement programming allows
host employers the opportunity
to offer work to one (or more) of
their highly skilled work placement
participants, without the obligation
to hire. As a host employer, the
Company is able to assess the skills
and abilities of potential employees.
The programming also allows work
placement participants the chance
to acquire vital experience in the
Canadian workforce, as well as local
references.
At Aerospace, the Continuous
Improvement (CI) Department
welcomed Ivan Vallejo (originally
from Mexico) to the team. After
reviewing Ivan’s resume and
interviewing him, the department
felt he would be a great fit for a
project with the Maintenance
Department. Ivan worked on
the Maintenance Facility Review
initiative to identify facility risks
and improvements along with
energy efficiency opportunities.
Ivan worked effectively with both
Maintenance and CI to successfully
build a strategic plan during his
six-week work term. The project
was a great accomplishment for
both parties: Aerospace was able
to develop the strategic plan and
Ivan was able to gain crucial work
experience in Canada, which will
help him to integrate into the local
workforce.
For more information on ISIS and
its programming, please visit their
website at www.isisns.ca.

increments. Therefore, one unit of

and fluoride treatments are covered
under the I.M.P. Group Dental Plan.
Polishing is limited to one unit
every six months.
As always, if your dentist is
recommending a treatment plan

questions and request that your
dentist send Manulife Financial a

surprises at the time of the claim.
Occupational Health & Safety
NAOSH Week
During North American
Occupational Safety and Health
(NAOSH) Week, the health and
safety of employees takes centre
stage. NAOSH Week puts workplace
health and safety in the spotlight.
IMP business units are encouraged
to participate in NAOSH Week
every year. Business units involved
in making NAOSH Week a
success in the past have found
improvements in attitudes toward
safety and the fostering of a safetyminded culture, better cooperation
and increased involvement between
management and employees, and
better networking between safety
committees, employees and safety
people. Some examples of things
you can do in conjunction with your
JOHSC or Safety Representatives to
help promote NAOSH Week are:
• Circulate information that NAOSH
Week is approaching to inform
employees.
• Ensure NAOSH is part of your
safety meeting’s agenda during
March or April.
• Have contests, for example: a
recognize the Hazards in your
workplace contest in which
participants receive a chance to
win prizes for submitting hazard
report forms or near misses.
• Set up a NAOSH Week Kiosk
booth/table during NAOSH
Week to provide information
to employees about NAOSH
Week and the activities they can
participate in.
• Recruit employees for First Aid or
JOHSC certifications if required.
The Canadian Centre for
Occupational Health and Safety
(CCOHS) and other organizations
around the country are hosting
events and activities to mark this
important week, and encourage
Canadians to get involved and
participate by visiting their sites to
get information and ideas on what
they can do
this year to
help support
NAOSH week in the workplace.
The goal of NAOSH Week is to
focus the attention of employers,
employees, the general public and
all partners in occupational safety
and health on the importance of
preventing injury and illness in the
workplace.
Photos and articles of your
NAOSH Week activities will be
a welcome submission for the
Summer IMPulse edition. For more
information on how to promote
NAOSH Week 2013 at your business
unit please contact your JOHSC
or Safety Representatives or visit:
