kNOw Waste:
Litter, Litter, Everywhere
Canterbury Network Public Speaking
Competition 2014
On Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th October,
Transpacific Cleanaway visited our school on
behalf of the City of Canterbury Council to teach
Stage 1 (grades 1 and 2) students about litter and
recycling. Students participated in a lesson called
Litter, Litter Everywhere which is part of the kNOw
Waste Education Program.
The day I was going Chullora Public School I was
very excited and I wished myself a good luck. I
quickly packed my bag and ran like the wind.
When I arrived I watched the kindergarten children
give their speeches. Later I saw Year 5 and 6 say
their speeches.
The kNOw Waste Education Program is aimed at
teaching children about sustainable waste
management practices. It is hoped that children
who participate in the program also share their
learning experiences with their family, relatives
and friends.
The Litter, Litter Everywhere lesson focused on
the items that don’t make it into the bin and
become ‘rubbish on the run!’
We discussed:
- Where we have seen litter at school and
where we live
- How the litter got there
- Why litter is bad for the environment
- How to reduce the litter around us
Disposing of rubbish safely and effectively are
essential ways to:
- Reduce the risk from unsafe litter where our
families play
- Keep our citiies beautiful and free of
unsightly rubbish
- Ensure a cleaner, greener environment for us
and future generations.
Stage 1 students thoroughly enjoyed participating
in this program and were very surprised with the
amount of litter and rubbish we collected together
from our school playground. Student have become
aware of the unsafe and unhygienic nature of litter
and now remind and encourage each other to
throw their litter in school bins.
Finally it was my turn! When I was giving my
speech I was trying to remember to have eyecontact, speak loudly and remember to use
expression in my voice. Luckily I got an award for
making it to this competition.
The other participants from our school were
Monica Chowdhury, Taquee Tazwar and Fatimah
Patel. Monica and Taquee received a Highly
Commended award. I was really happy and proud
of myself for participating in the competition.
Thankyou Ms Richardson and Ms Tanner for
helping me to achieve that level with my public
speaking.
