The President’s Message
The Queensland Dog World
President’s message for May 2015.
Firstly, I would like to thank all the members of the dog world for their congratulations on
the new position I have been elected into, being that of the President of Dogs Queensland.
Representing Dogs Queensland in this role is an absolute honour for me, a role which I take
very seriously and will work tirelessly at. Congratulations also to our newly appointed Vice
Presidents, Miss Ainslie Carius and Mrs Ulla Greenwood.
The currently elected Board contains a diversity of people, knowledge and skills, which will
be of great benefit in continuing to take Dogs Queensland into the future. From our initial
Directors training workshop only a few weeks ago, it was easy to see the passion and drive
that your appointed Directors have for our organisation. It has also shown that as a Board,
we will all work together and be united in the goals of Dogs Queensland. We will achieve
even greater results than we have already accomplished in the last two years, since the initial
incorporation of the CCC(Q) Limited.
There are a number of issues the Board will be addressing over the coming year and these
include:
•
•
•
•
•
Implementation and further development of the strategic plan;
Further consultation and planning on the proposed undercover ring area and finalisation
of the camping area at Durack;
Improvements to the use of technology in metropolitan and regional areas of
Queensland;
Possible relocation of the Dogs Queensland office from Fortitude Valley to Durack;
Continue to review the current structure of the office administration processes and ways
to streamline procedures to assist members;
There is a belief amongst some members, that as Directors, we are able to discuss all
matters openly which have been discussed at Board meetings. It is important to note, that
as Directors, we are all bound by a confidentiality agreement which is predominantly for
the protection of all members’ rights. Any information relating to Board decisions is to be
released by the office, not Directors.
I request that members respect this fact, as if necessary Directors will simply respond by
stating they are unable to discuss any matters currently before the Board. We have adopted
a ‘month in review’ newsletter and will be reviewing our communication processes, to ensure
members are kept as up to date as possible on all issues regarding Dogs Queensland.
In closing, I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to the outgoing president, Mrs Norma
Zimmerle. Norma has been a dedicated and passionate leader over the last two years.
Thanks must also go to the outgoing Board. Their efforts have seen a wide variety of changes
implemented, which in turn has boosted the public profile of Dogs Queensland immensely.

Many working gundog breeds never get the chance to do
what genetically their whole being drives them to want to do.
When given a chance they exhibit extraordinary excitement and

‘Eddie’
‘Spezia Prince of Fools’
Eddie was a much loved cocker spaniel. He was named
Prince Edward and was treated like royalty. He was
supposed to be my daughter’s dog but I seemed to be
his main carer. I fed him, trained him and groomed him
for hours in preparation for the shows.
Emmy did love him and showed him at all the shows he
entered. He is remembered for being a loveable boy that
could be heard from the toilet block at Durack! We miss him
dearly and hope nobody has to go through what we did.
Jennifer Robb bred Eddie, he came to us at eight weeks old
and was delivered by Jen to an Agility Trial I was competing
at. He was a cute ball of fluff. We had never had a cocker
spaniel before and he was just so loving right from the
start. Eddie was his happiest when he was dirty! He loved
it when it rained, he would run around out in the rain and
find the muddiest puddles to play in.
We then rushed him over to the vet specialist for intensive
care, where he received another two vials of antivenin
and oxygen therapy. His blood was clotting but it was
suggested he had a blood clot on the brain and he was
put into an induced coma.
This is where he stayed, we hoped time would give his body
time to heal but when we tried to wake him up he did not
respond. It was time to say farewell ‘DoDo’.
I cannot thank his breeder Jennifer Robb and his grandma
Terri Davies enough for their support. Terri left work to
come to the specialists on the Friday to be with us to say
goodbye to our baby. I cannot believe the support we had
through social media, so many well wishes for him, I want
to say a huge thank you to everyone for this, it helped us
knowing we weren’t alone.
He was so young, it hurt us so badly, we are slowly getting
over this tragedy and only time will help. He is buried in
our garden with his favourite blue elephant and blue teddy
that has no stuffing.
We will never forget you little ‘DoDo’.
The HUTT family.
When we would arrive home in the afternoons the GSPs
would greet us with a bark but Eddie always greeted us
with some toy or object in his mouth, whatever was closest
Eddie would bring us his present. Everything was going
great, he was starting to look like a cocker spaniel and was
maturing nicely, until the 26th of March, 2015. This is when
our world fell apart.
I arrived home to find him and the GSP as usual, but he
didn’t bring me a toy. They looked fine but events unfolded
quickly. They ate their dinner as normal and I went to feed
the horses. It was at this point I found half an eastern brown
snake dead.
I checked on the dogs, within half an hour Eddie was
wobbly.
I picked him and the GSP up and raced to the vets. The GSP
was tested and cleared of any bites from the snake. Eddie
had multiple bites from the snake.
They administered the antivenin and treated him.

This picture was taken at the Goombungee show held on the 18th
of April. The girls began their journey in the show ring this year and
are thoroughly enjoying it. They have been given loads of advice
from many people around the shows and also partake in Show
Training nights at Coominya with the Lockyer Valley Kennel Club.
They have attended a lot of the ag shows and even the
Toowoomba Royal this year where they had great runs and were
awarded a ribbon each for their classes of breed. Both girls find
it interesting learning more and more about the breed with each
show as well as seeing some of the different breeds not as well
known to them.
The girls find the Douges to be of a wonderful temperament and
enjoy the loyal friendship of their dogs.

Many people say that toys are not very good for anything else
other than looking ‘cute’. I would like you to meet Amber. 2014
was Amber’s first year into serious competition and at the age of
sixteen months began her campaign.
During that year Amber competed in five different disciplines. By
the end of 2014 she had achieved her Championship (Neuter) title
in conformation – Title 1. She had also gained titles in Dances With
Dogs in both Freestyle and Heelwork to Music. These titles were
gained in three straight competitions where she gained first place
in her class every time - Titles 2 and 3.
Then followed Rally Obedience. Amber gained titles in Rally
Obedience Novice, Rally Obedience Advanced – Titles 4 and 5 –
and her first pass towards Rally Obedience Excellent. Amber also
competed in Novice Obedience and gained her first pass towards
that title.
So for a ‘cute’ dog, in one year, Amber achieved five titles and
passes towards two more. While she may be little she has a keen
intelligence and an even bigger passion to ‘work’. She has been
a challenge to train but an even greater joy to work with. 2015 is
already off to a great start with passes in the next level of both
Freestyle and Heelwork to Music in DWD, again with first places.
I look forward to what our partnership may bring in the future.
Not bad for a dog who is only good for looking ‘cute’.

Library News
The Queensland Dog World
Enjoy our great May titles on
the Affenpinscher, Griffon
Bruxellois, Havanese and
the Papillon.
All breeds featured in the May issue of the ‘Dog World’ Magazine are from the Toy Group. I am very sorry to say that
at this stage, there are no books on the Affenpinscher in the Durack Library but I have certainly made a note of this
and will try to rectify that as soon as I can.
However, we do hold books on the other featured breeds, namely the Havenese, Griffon and Papillon.
Two books on the Havanese are recent additions to the Library and hopefully these will be of value to trainee Judges. The
first of these is simply titled ‘Havanese’ (author Nikki Riggsbee) and has a Special chapter: Living with a Havanese. The book
contains some history of the breed as well as hints on grooming, feeding etc. The second Havanese book by Diane Klumb is
more in depth and it’s the subject of this month’s Book Review.
For those needing to obtain more information on the Griffon Bruxellois, you will find a book by Juliette Cunliffe full of lots
of breeders information. The book in the Library is a ‘Special Rare Breed Edition’. I found this book well put together with all
the right info together with good colour photos.
A couple of books on the Papillon are available including a TFH publication by Mrs D. Christian Gauss and another titled ‘The
Complete Papillon’ written by Carolyn and David Roe.
All of the above books are available for borrowing from the Durack Library.
Visiting the Library
Should you ever wish to access books from the Library at any time, please contact me on 0407 961 025 to make alternate arrangements.
I am only too happy to assist in any way I can.

Book Review
The Queensland Dog World
This month’s
member review is:
‘The Havanese’
Written by Diane Klumb
Reviewed by Helen Acworth
Library and Archives Committee
My Book Review selection this month has come from the breeds featured
in the May ‘Dog World’ Magazine.
This book (published in 2005) is a recent addition to the Library. Written by
Diane Klumb in association with Joanne Baldwin DVM, this is not a ‘glossy’
book full of coloured photos, but it is a book full of the most amazing insight
into this beautifull breed. The authors, (Diane Klumb and her husband) have
been breeding and showing purebred dogs for over thirty years and Diane has
presented seminars on canine anatomy as well as writing a monthly column
for ‘Showsight’ magazine.
In association with Diane, Joanne Baldwin is a practising veterinarian who
has been involved with Havanese since 1992. She is the Chair of Health
Committee of the Havanese Club of America and a founder of H.E.A.R.T. a
non-profit organisation dedicated to support research health issues affecting
Havanese. The information on the Havanese contained in this book is quite
outstanding, and written in such a fashion that a novice like myself can easily
read and absorb.
Please if you have an interest in this Breed, either as a breeder, exhibitor or
trainee, this is the book for you.

Griffon History
Dogs Queensland Exclusive

There are three variations of this breed, the Griffon Bruxellois, the
Petit Brabançon and the Griffon Belge. Their origins are somewhat
of a mystery and there are two opposing theories that have been
put forward by various authorities on the breed over the years.
The first theory is that the breed is some centuries old, this is based
mainly on the belief that the little wire haired dog in the foreground
of the Jan Van Eyck painting ‘The Wedding of Arnolfini’ dated 1434,
is thought to be an early form of the breed. Certainly the little dog
depicted does bear a slight resemblance to the breed but there
are also claims that his dog is the ancestor of other toy breeds. It’s
possible of course that this dog is just a type from which many small
breeds developed.
It is generally thought that a few chance breedings produced a
slightly different look, they began to be noticed and eventually
they became fashionable and breeders started to introduce crosses
of various kinds.
The Pug gave the breed the large head and eye, the colour black and
smooth coats. It is said that the smooth coated Griffons were popular
with the ‘ladies of the night’ in the Brabant region of Belgium and
so came to be known as Petit Brabançon which roughly translates
as a little dog from Brabant (see below).
The second theory, is that the breed did not exist until 1880 in which
year a Griffon type dog won a third prize in a variety class at the
Great Dog Show in Brussels and was very much admired. Following
this show Belgian breeders took great interest in these dogs and so
started the popularity and the development of the breed.
It should be noted that another painting ‘La Baigneuse au Griffon’
of 1870 depicts a small black and tan dog, but as the term ‘Griffon’
merely means ‘rough coated’, it is no proof that this dog with its
longish nose is an example of an early Griffon Bruxellois. There is
probably a little truth in both theories.
The forerunner of the breed was almost certainly a small rough
coated terrier type dog called a Smousje that had been around for
some time in the streets of Brussels.
They were favoured by the coachmen of the city who kept them
in the stables as ratters and they were called little Griffons d’Ecurie
(wiry coated stable dogs).

The ruby King Charles Spaniel reinforced the flat face and added
richness of colour to the red coat but also unfortunately introduced the
domed skull, large ears and webbed feet (which is still to be seen today).

It is also claimed that Yorkshire Terriers were used and that the often
seen silky top-knot is a product of these crossings.
In Belgium during 1880 the ‘Club du Griffon Bruxellois’ was formed
and a standard drawn up. Registrations in the Livre des Origines
Saint-Hubert (LOSH) and the first breed classes followed in 1883 and
the breed went from strength to strength soon gaining admirers
from other European countries and America. The popularity of the
breed was increased by the interest of Queen Marie-Henriette of
the Belgians, a dog enthusiast who visited the annual dog shows in
Belgium religiously, often with her daughter, and became a breeder
and enthusiast of Griffon Bruxellois giving them international fame
and popularity (see below).
Havanese History
Dogs Queensland Exclusive
Supplied by Pam Sleep
Although it is new to the accepted dog show world, the
Havanese is quite an old breed in dog years Its history is
fascinating and important in defining type, as it is unique in
many respects. The Havanese is the National dog of Cuba and
its only native breed.
The First World War proved a difficult time for Belgian breeders but
they recovered enough to continue breeding and exporting Griffons,
but between then and the Second World War it was decided that any
web-footed stock should not be bred from, and although the fault
was eradicated there it caused a decline in the breed and by 1939
it was in a sorry state numerically. During the war years there was
no breeding and by 1945 the Griffon had almost disappeared in its
native country and it was only through the vigilance of dedicated
breeders (in the UK particularly) that the breed survived at all.
Many dogs were exported to other countries and although the breed
has never been numerous or popular there has been increasing
interest in the last ten years because of a general increase in interest
in toy dogs. A Griffon featured in the movie ‘As Good as it Gets’ and in
Australia there have been a number of Griffons in TV advertisements.
The Ewok is said to have been modelled on the Griffon as the creator
of the Star Wars, George Lucas, had several of his own. Chewbacca’s
name is derived from the Russian word for dog.
In Australia the breed is becoming increasingly popular and there
are now four breed clubs, the first, the GBC of Victoria was formed
in 1975 and the other three, one in Queensland and two in NSW,
were formed in the last five years.

The flag of Spain was the first flag raised over Cuba by Christopher
Columbus in November of 1492. In the ten years following,
colonisation begun on the island by Spain, who owned the country
for the better part of the next four hundred years.
The first settlers came from two distinct classes, farmers primarily
from the island of Tenerife, and the ‘segundos’ or second sons of
the Spanish aristocracy. Ships’ logs of the early sixteenth century
reveal that dogs were brought along on these early colonists’
voyages and logic tells us they were most likely the dog of Tenerife
common ancestor to all the Bichon family.
Because of the draconian trade restrictions imposed on its colonies
by Spain, Tenerife remained one of the only ports open to Cuba
for trade, and it would appear these little dogs who soon found
their way into the homes of the Spanish aristocracy, developed
without much outside influence.
They did however, develop in response to the climate of this
tropical island. The Havanese of today is still a remarkably heat tolerant little dog, due in no small part to the unique coat Once
called the Havana Silk Dog or the Spanish Silk Poodle, the coat
is like raw silk floss, profuse, but extremely light and soft and
insulating against the tropical rays in much the same way that

yards of silk sari protect the women of India.
In its native country, the coat was never clipped for this reason
and the hair never tied in a topknot, as the Cubans believe it
protects the eyes from the harsh sun.
In spite of the trade restrictions, Colonial Cuba developed and
prospered by the 18th century. It was the cultural centre of the
New World with an elegance that surpassed anything the British
had managed in its colonies. The aristocracy of Europe found
the city of Havana to be a great vacation spot, with its operas,
theatres and palaces.
On their return to Europe, they brought back the little dog on
Havana, which found favour in the courts of Spain, France and
England In both Spain and in the court of Louis XVI they were
shorn in the manner of poodles. And were much admired for their
diminutive size. The English, on the other hand, appeared to leave
them ‘au natural’ and called them the white Cuban although they
were as often found in parti-colors and shades of fawn.
It is a position he has held there for the past one hundred and
fifty years.
With the advent of the Cuban revolution, the class of Cubans who
owned Havanese was the first to leave. A handful of them found
their way to the USA and by the end of the 70s a gene pool was
being rebuilt. All the Havanese in the world today, save those from
the ‘Iron Curtain’ countries and those remaining in Cuba stem from
those eleven little immigrants.
Remarkably, through all their travels, the Havanese type has
remained virtually unchanged from that of the dogs painted in
the eighteenth century. To preserve it now and for the future is
the challenge.

By the mid-eighteenth century, they were downright trendy in
Europe. Queen Victoria owned two and Charles Dickens had one,
beloved of his seven children and named Tim. They were exhibited
in the Early European dog shows and type was well established.
In Cuba meanwhile, the times were changing. The aristocracy of
the sugar barons was dying out and a new class was emerging,
the bourgeoisie, and the little dog of Havana, adaptable as always
became a family dog extraordinaire, playmate of children, watch

weighs on average 4 kg and reaches up to 11 inches in height.
A hunter of rodents and small mammals in 17th Century Europe,
the Affenpinscher still makes a formidable ratter when given the

excellent city pets, and if yapping is controlled at an early stage,
they make superb watchdogs and loyal defenders of their realms.

This dog exhibits a mixture of exuberance and serenity. If gently
treated, they get along with children and enjoy the company of
other dogs if socialised with them early. They are full of curiosity
and their own self importance, are determined and fearless, slow
to make friends with strangers and make good watchdogs.
A low maintenance breed requiring only a daily walk around the

The Papillon
The Papillon is one of the oldest breeds of dog, with a recorded
history in Europe going back nearly 700 years. The breed
originally only had dropped ears and were called the ‘epagneul
nain’ or ‘dwarf spaniel’. Much of the breed’s development is
known because of its depiction in paintings.
This tiny breed is recognisable in 13th through 15th century Italian
paintings in the Renaissance period. They were often painted on the
laps of French and Spanish noblewomen. The dog was later known
as the Continental Toy Spaniel. They were sometimes referred to as
simply a Toy Spaniel.
Over time, an erect-eared type, fringed as to resemble the ears of a
butterfly, developed. Papillon means ‘butterfly’ in French and white
covers both ears and eyes from back to front.
Average size, weight and lifespan
Weight: 3 kg (approx)
Life Span: 15 years (approx)
Appearance:
Also called the Continental Toy Spaniel, the Papillon is a small fineboned little dog. The small head is slightly rounded between the
ears with a well defined stop. The muzzle is somewhat short, thin
tapering to the nose. The dark, medium sized, round eyes have black
rims. The large ears can either be erect or dropped with rounded
tips. Papillon with drop ears are called Phalene Papillon (Moth). The
hair on the ears is long, and fringed, giving it a butterfly-like look.
The long tail is set high carried over the body, and covered with long
hair. The straight, long, fine, single coat has extra frill on the chest,
ears, back of the legs and the tail. Coat colour is white with patches
of any colour except for liver. A mask of a colour other than white
covers both ears and eyes from back to front.
Care requirements:
Play will take care of a lot of their exercise needs, however, they enjoy
a daily walk. They will also enjoy a good romp in a safe open area off
lead, such as a large fenced in yard. Daily combing and brushing of
the long, silky, single coat is important and fairly straightforward.
These dogs are usually clean and odourless. Bathe or dry shampoo
when necessary.
18 - May 2015
Personality, characteristics and temperament:
The Papillon is sometimes called the butterfly dog, because the ears
look like butterfly wings. It is a friendly, intelligent dog that is tougher
than it looks, and loves outdoor exercise. A playful, lively, amusing,
animated and charming little dog. Affectionate, gentle, patient, and
proud, they love to cuddle. Enjoys a good romp outdoors. They are
steady, obedient and are not yappers.

Carnwath Havanese
What is a Havanese, you ask?
I hear this question so often, as people smile down at my
friend on the lead. The best answer I know comes from Dorothy
Goodale, in her book ‘Havanese… A Complete and Reliable
Handbook’, published by TFH.
Dorothy wrote:
“The Havanese is truly one of the most delightful of the small
breeds. They are exceptionally talented and quick witted.
Obedience training is achieved with very little effort. Fast to learn
and anxious to please, they are a charming, open hearted breed
with nothing sly or mean in their makeup.
They are good watchdogs, making sure to alert you when a visitor
arrives, and then taking their cue from you and welcoming the
guest when all seems well with the master.
They are courageous and fearless in the face of danger. As
they grow older, they become a bit stand offish with strangers,
preferring to make friends with the visitor on their own terms and
in their own time.”
Well said Dorothy, that is a Havanese!

They thrive on affection and human companionship and are at
their very best when participating as members of the family.
They love children and will play tirelessly with them at any game.
Havanese are powerful swimmers and love playing in the water,
diving in and out like tiny seals.
…After they arrived on the European continent, they were often
used as entertainers in the traveling circuses because of their
keen intelligence and their love of the attention that comes from
their adorable little ‘show off’ nature. They are curious and busy
constantly.

The Queensland Dog World
Dog World Update, May 2015
Hi all, Zone 2 continues to chug along and it’s hard to believe
that we are almost approaching the halfway mark of the year.
There are many activities and events occurring in the area at the
moment for members to enjoy. All of our Clubs are working very
hard to promote purebred dogs to the wider community and to
provide events and activities for our members.
Bundaberg Easter Eggstravaganza
The Bundaberg Easter Eggstravaganza of four championship
and two open shows has been a major event for the zone with
international judging panels (for the champ shows) and seven
rings running in an undercover arena.
At the time of writing, as there is a bit of lead time required for
magazine submissions, the shows had not yet happened, but I
just want to mention that the Bundaberg Canine Club has worked
extraordinarily hard to present this event to members, and I have
no doubt it has been very successful.
I will ask the Club to provide a feature on the event for a future
magazine, so stay tuned!
Mackay Kennel Club Championship Shows
– 14th and 15th March 2015
The Mackay Kennel Club with a new Committee ran a very
successful show weekend in March. The Club worked very hard
to promote their shows and put on a great weekend for all.
Congratulations to all the winners and the Committee who went
over and above the call of duty to ensure everything was just so.
I’d also mention that the canteen was superb – well done to the
workers in there!
Just a note for any dog show people in the Mackay area, the
Mackay club presents show training each Wednesday from 6pm
at the Muller Park Grounds.
Please check out the Club’s Facebook page for more details and
contacts for this training.
Show Workers Training
Many hands make light work. At all our shows we need Show
Managers, Stewards and Writers to ensure that the events run
smoothly and results are recorded.
22 - May 2015
We now have regionally-based trainers available to enable more
training options for regional members. Even if you just want
a general grounding in the rules and how shows operate, this
training is invaluable.
Check out the Dogs Queensland website to view future proposed
dates and locations for this training in your area.
Breeders Seminars available to regional
members!
A breeders seminar was recently conducted at Durack with
Professor Claire Wade and Dr Bethany Wilson presenting.
During the lead up to these seminars, regional members voiced
their concerns that they would also like an opportunity to
participate in these sessions despite being unable to physically
attend and suggested perhaps a recording to me made.
It is pleasing to note that Dogs Queensland did listen to this
feedback and recorded the presentation with the objective of
making it available to members who were unable to attend the
event.
This is a very positive step forward in including regional members
in the activities of the organisation and developing a more holistic
approach to these type of programs.
From the media release on these seminars, it is clear that they were
very successful and thanks needs to go to the Board for giving the
recording the go ahead. As one of the members originally pushing
for a recording to be made, I would also like to personally thank
our Marketing Manager, Helen Mackie who I know worked very
hard to bring this to fruition and put in many long days to make
it all happen.
Hopefully this presents a platform for the future where we have
more of these opportunities and the benefits are available to all
members.
Rules in Action – What if I’ve entered in the
wrong class?
The rule relating to this situation is Rule 143 which states:
“A dog may be entered only in a class for which it is eligible.
If through the fault of the intending exhibitor or his agent, an
exhibit is entered in the wrong age class, or if an exhibit becomes
ineligible for the class in which it is entered, it shall be transferred
to the Open Class, provided however that this Rule shall not apply

to dogs eligible for entry only in Baby Puppy Classes which shall
not be transferred to any other class prior to judging. Where an
exhibit is entered in the correct age class but the wrong sex is
indicated the said exhibit will be transferred across”.
other types of patronage of local businesses.
How do we apply these rules – here are some situations and the
treatment under Rule 143.
So please try to support some agricultural shows in your area
this year – why not try going somewhere that you have never
visited – these small groups will be grateful for it and you’ll have
a fun time doing it.
1. I entered my dog in the Statebred Class but it is actually
from interstate. Rule 143 would require this exhibit to be
transferred to the Open Class.
2. I entered my five month old Baby Puppy in the Puppy Class.
The baby puppy cannot be shown in the Puppy Class as
it is ineligible to compete in this class and Rule 143 states
that it cannot be transferred to any other class.
3. I accidently put Bitch on my Dog’s entry form for the Junior
Class. The dog will be transferred out of the Junior Bitch
class and to the Junior Dog class.
This treatment applies if the errors are discovered prior to the class
being judged. If an ineligible exhibit is entered and exhibited in a
class that it is not eligible then the exhibit is disqualified.
These smaller shows tend to have a very relaxed, fun atmosphere
that I’m sure members would find very enjoyable and rewarding.
Submissions are welcome
Please feel free to send me your submissions of news, photos,
stories or ideas for content in this column.
Contrary to what people might expect, I don’t like having to source
all the content and would much rather have lots of submissions
to draft together for the column each month so please send me
something through.
Submissions can be emailed to me at [email protected]
All the best until next time, Craig.
It is also very important to remember as exhibitors, Rule 139 which
states:
“The exhibitor shall be responsible for the correctness of the
particulars contained in the entry form”.
So it is our responsibility as exhibitors to ensure that our dogs are
entered in the correct class and it is important for us to be diligent
with our entry forms to ensure they are correctly completed and
it also pays to check our entry in the catalogue and address any
issues with the Show Manager prior to judging time. It may be that
there has been a cataloguing error or it could be an exhibitor error,
but in any case, checking for correctness and sorting out any issues
prior to going in the ring is the best way to avoid any headaches.
Agricultural Shows
It’s that time of the year when many communities are holding their
agricultural shows and these can be a really fun day for members
as well as a great promotional opportunity for purebred dogs.
With many small communities and agricultural show societies
struggling with viability issues, we should never underestimate
the influence and benefit that the dog dollar can have for these
small towns in terms of sales for fuel, accommodation, food and

What is the Dog Population of Australia?
Lets do the math!
In 2010 research by BIS Shrapnel for the Australian Companion
Animal Council Publication “The Contribution of the Pet Care
Industry to the Australian Economy” estimated that the dog
population was 3.6 million.
Estimated Australian Dog Population 4.2 million.
In 2013 a survey by Galaxy Research for the Animal Health Alliance
Publication “Pet Ownership in Australia Summary” estimated that
the dog population was 4.2 million.
So why was there a difference in
estimated dog populations?
The Animal Health Alliance intimated that the dog numbers
being higher than previously thought was due to the different
methodology applied.
A conservative estimate is that due to mortality 10% need to be
replaced annually which indicates a demand for 420,000 puppies
per year.
In 2014 ANKC Ltd Breeders registered 69,274 puppies, so to
achieve the estimated number required, approximately 350,726
were bred by people outside the ANKC who have no accountability

The History of the
Affenpinscher
Dogs Queensland Exclusive
Supplied by Diana Norman
A woodcut by Elbrecht Durer (1471-1525) is the earliest known
visual record of an Affenpinscher. The dog depicted is a small
rough coated red terrier type not too dissimilar from the
modern dog.
Originally just referred to as ‘rat terriers’ they were kept by German
farmers in and around their granaries stables and barns to keep the
rodent populations in check. Rats and mice frequently decimated
hard won harvests and these efficient little terriers were much
valued for their service.
26 - May 2015
However they proved to be the most adept of social climbers!
With their mustachioed, mischievous monkey faces, coupled with
high intelligence and boundless charm, they managed to leave
the farmyard behind and took up residence in the main house
protecting the larder. From there it was a relatively short jump to
the mistress of the house’s lap! The rest as they say is history, but
make no mistake they are still equally at home pursuing vermin
or settled in your most comfortable chair!
A French owned Affenpinscher painted by Dutch artist Charles
Verlai some time before 1890, suggests that these little dogs
were becoming loved and well known beyond German borders.
An apparent darling of artists, none other than the great
French Impressionist painter Pierre Auguste Renoir, placed an
Affenpinscher in several of his major works.
The German Pinscher Klub of 1895 lists Affenpinscher type dogs
in its first five volumes but from 1903-1907 they are recorded as a
separate breed. They were also initially shown in two sizes, large
and small.

Even today in closely line bred litters a dog of 13 to 16 inches will
sometimes appear.
Originally these charming monkey terriers came in many colors
and mixes of colors, ranging from yellow to red to gray, often
combined with black, with shades of red being the most common.
German registrations between 1913 and 1923 show around 17%
of dogs were black, however by 1922 -25 there was a jump to 50%
black, and by 1935 registrations show 78% of all Affenpinschers
were born black.
This remarkable colour change was brought about by people of
wealth and influence, arbiters of taste and style in the Munich of
the 20s and 30s. One influential breeder in particular, rapidly had
an impact on what was still a relatively rare breed. And so it was
that black became the preferred color, and in many countries is
the only colour accepted by their Standards*.
After World War 2 Affenpinschers were left just hanging on by
a thread. Postwar few things German found much favour and
the breed is believed to have suffered further losses as a result.
Numbers in Germany are still very low, but with recent successes at
the highest level of International competition, these mustachioed
imps are once again enjoying a worldwide surge in numbers and
popularity.
* There are however major exceptions to the all-black attitude,
including in the USA Canada and Norway, with a number of other
countries allowing puppies other than black to be registered and
exported. There is a groundswell of support in both the UK and in
New Zealand to amend their Breed Standards to permit recognition
and registration of other coloured dogs.

1. Avoid The Tick Habitat
During the tick season, don’t take your dog walking in bush areas
or scrub areas known to harbor ticks. Keep lawns and shrubs
short and remove compost material from backyards.
How can I protect
my dog from tick
paralysis?
2. Search Pets Every Day For Ticks
The most essential preventative measure is a thorough search of
your dog’s skin and coat at least once a day even if tick control
products have been applied. This method gives you the best
chance of finding a tick.
What do paralysis ticks look like?
The paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus, causes tick paralysis.
Tick paralysis is a serious and potentially fatal condition
requiring urgent veterinary attention. It is important to be
aware of paralysis ticks and to actively protect your dog.
What are paralysis ticks and how do they cause paralysis?
Paralysis ticks are dangerous parasites that can attach to the
dog and proceed to suck blood from them. As they suck the
blood, they secrete a toxin into the pet. This toxin affects the
nervous system leading to a number of symptoms (see below)
and potentially death.
Where are paralysis ticks found?
The paralysis tick is generally found on the eastern seaboard,
from North Queensland down to Victoria. In the north, paralysis
ticks may be found all year round, while in the more southern
areas, the season generally begins in spring and finishes in late
autumn.
Please note that tick season can be variable, starting earlier and
ending later, for example, it may start early if the winter is mild.
Ticks can also be found inland in suitable habitats. Paralysis
ticks may be found on animals that live in or near bush or scrub
land. Native animals such as marsupials, birds and reptiles are
the natural hosts, however ticks can also become attached to
animals such as dogs and cats.
How do I protect my pet?
A holistic approach is necessary to protect your pet and reduce
the risk of tick paralysis.
28 - May 2015
The paralysis tick can look different depending on whether they
are engorged with blood or not. When engorged with blood they
have a blueish to light-grey/grey colour. Familiarise yourself with
their appearance - check at your local vet clinic/vet clinic website,
they will usually have posters and photos of paralysis ticks or do
an online search for an image of Ixodes holocyclus.
Once on the animal, the tick finds a site of attachment where it
becomes deeply and firmly embedded in the skin. When an adult
tick feeds on blood, it increases in size dramatically (becomes
engorged). When a tick attaches to the skin, the area becomes
red and a raised thickening or ‘crater’ may appear. A crater is
evidence of a prior tick attachment.
How do I search my pet?
Search pets thoroughly at least once a day. Use the fingertips
to feel through the animal’s coat. Ticks or tick craters can be felt
as lumps on the skin surface. Most ticks are found forward of
the front legs, especially on the face, neck and ears. However,
remember to search the entire pet.
Start at your pet’s nose and slowly examine the face, forehead
and ears (outer and inner surface of the ear flap/pinna). Also
search the eyes and lips and the skin/fur around the eyes and
lips. Carefully examine all skin folds as well.
Remove any collars and search the neck area thoroughly
including the skin folds of the neck. Continue the search,
searching the shoulder area and then down the shoulders to
the front legs. Remember to check between each toe and under
the surface of the front feet.
Also check under the armpits.

Examine the chest area, all along the back, sides, belly, inguinal
area, around the tail and anus and the thighs, back legs, in
between the back leg toes and feet (including the under surface).
(as a result of the toxin) and this may lead to aspiration of food/
water into their airways which can cause aspiration pneumonia
and serious breathing difficulties.
How do you remove a tick?
4. Tick Control Products
If a tick is found it should be removed immediately. Your
veterinarian can show you the best way to remove a tick. When
removing a tick, avoid disturbing the body of the tick (don’t
squeeze the body). Aim to remove the tick by its head at the
point of insertion into the pet’s skin. A useful aid is a tick remover
- a fork like device that slides either side of the tick without
touching the body of the tick and removes the tick easily.
In addition to being aware of tick paralysis and the common
symptoms, avoiding tick habitats and daily searching for ticks
on your dog, talk to your vet about tick control products which
are safe and suitable for dogs.
If you find a tick, remove it immediately and take your dog to
the vet as soon as possible. Remember to also continue to search
for more ticks.
5. Talk To Your Vet
Some dogs can be infested with many ticks at one time.

Excessive salivation/drooling
Loss of appetite
Progressive paralysis to include the forelegs
Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
Grunting noises when breathing or any other abnormal

What should you do if your pet shows symptoms of tick
toxicity or if you find a crater or a tick on your dog?
Take your pet to your veterinarian as soon as possible – tick
paralysis is a serious and potentially fatal condition that requires
veterinary attention.
Stay calm and keep your pet calm and at a comfortable
temperature (not too hot or cold).
Search for ticks and remove them as soon as possible (see
removal tips above).
Do not offer food or water or give anything orally, pets affected
by tick paralysis cannot protect their airway when they swallow

THE GROUP
STAY EXERCISES OBEDIENCE
A Timely Reminder
Dogs Queensland Exclusive
Supplied by Coral Pethers
Competitor and Judge, Obedience
I am sure that all competitors involved in obedience trialling
have, at some time, either heard of, seen, or been a part of an
incident between dogs during the group stay exercises.
I have been a competitor in obedience for almost thirty years
and a judge of obedience for fifteen years and I have seen many
incidents. It seems to me that there are two main areas in which
these exchanges occur between dogs during the stays.
Firstly, is during the line up outside the ring while waiting to enter
for the group stays. It is the responsibility of the handlers during
this time to ensure that not only is their dog not causing any
problems for other dogs around it but also to keep their dog safe.
Make sure there is a safe distance between each dog and make
sure you stay aware of what your dog is doing. It is amazing how
quickly a dog can dash to the end of the lead and the upset it can
cause in a few seconds of inattention from the handler.
Your dog may not be an aggressive dog but a very friendly one.
That does not give it the right to approach another dog during
this line up. It is not fair on handlers if they have done the correct
training to ensure their dog is doing the right thing and are being
considerate of other handlers to have their dog affected by another
dog’s misbehaviour or handler’s inattention.
With some dogs it can take only one bad incident and that dog
is affected for life.
30 - May 2015
What may have been a great trialling dog is now no longer able to
be trialled because of someone else’s inconsideration.
Handlers are there because they enjoy working with their dogs
and we all need to ensure that it is as good as an experience as
possible for everyone.
Secondly, is when a dog breaks and goes to another dog during
the actual stay exercise. If you have a dog that does this it is your
responsibility to ensure that the training you do with your dog
eliminates this type of behaviour before you enter a trial. Going
into a trial with the hope that this time your dog will fluke it and
stay is not only not fair on your dog but most unfair on the dogs
around it.
Too many times over the years I have heard from handlers who
said they gave obedience away because of incidents that occurred
during the group stay exercises, which either frightened the
handler on behalf of their dog or affected the dog. We want all
handlers to enjoy the world of obedience trialling and to succeed
and gain that qualifying certificate as a reward for all the hard work
that has been put in by both handler and dog.
Be considerate of your fellow trainers to ensure all enjoy that
special bond with their dog.

Knowing
the Havanese
Dogs Queensland Exclusive
Supplied by Lindsey Boldwin
Carnwath Havanese
Small long coated dogs have been documented throughout
the Mediterannean regions for centuries.
Many of these highly desirable ladies’ pets found their way to the
New World as trade, presents or bribes. They were especially prized
by the upper class in Cuba, where they were bred with local dogs
and small poodle types. They became the Cuban National dog,
the Havana Silk Dog.
When Fidel Castro took power, many Cuban refugees made their
way to the United States, where their special little dogs were
welcomed, and developed into what we know as the Havanese.
In many countries, though, we are known as the Bichon Havanais.
Havanese are brilliant little dogs, full of the joy of life, very loving
and playful. In construction they are very different to the other
Bichon breeds.
Someone (a Group 1 Judge!) once said “Nothing but a designer
dog with a pedigree”. Please let me know if ever you see a designer
dog with our conformation!
We have seven points of call for judges:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
Head is equal from nose to stop to occiput.
Forechest is prominent. (not in standard)
From withers to elbow equals from elbow to foot.
Point of shoulder to buttock is 4: height at withers is 3 (We
are NOT long)
We arch over the loin (NOT a rising topline)
Our coat is long, soft wavy or flat. NOT trimmed , straightened,
or overgroomed. There may or may not be undercoat.
We don’t move like an ordinary dog, we Bop. Light footed
and elastic.
Havanese are full of personality, and make wonderful family
members.
We are expecting a big future with this breed, wish us luck!

instances bred Bichons, Smooth Fox Terriers, Italian Greyhounds, Cavaliers,
Keeshonds and currently a Basset Fauve.

1970s. In the early 1980s she also became involved with Smooth Fox Terriers

of 100 Champion Weimaraners under the prefix Ghostwind and has judged in
many countries throughout the world.

many BIS winners and Champions both here and overseas under the Branbern
prefix. An All Breeds judge, Mrs Brand has judged extensively overseas.
