LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Dear Members of Board of Trustees, Dear Stakeholders,
2013 was a busy and successful year, during which our Foundation maintained
our focus on philanthropic activities for women, youth and the people with
disabilities. We continued supporting projects carried out by civil society
organizations, providing scholarships and giving awards to youth in education,
supporting culture and art events; and creating new, permanent projects to serve
the public.
2013 was a successful year, during which we increased both our Foundation’s
corporate capacity, and that of our stakeholders which are civil society
organizations.
To summarize our Foundation’s activities for 2013:
•
We continued our support to Sabanci University’s operating expenses.
•
Among our Foundation’s institutions were the reconstruction of the Haci Omer Sabanci Primary
and Secondary Education School in Van following the earthquake there, and the Mardin Sabanci
Girl’s Dormitory in Mardin. We also continued the collaboration with the Turkan Sabanci Primary
and Vocational School for the Blind and the Perkins School for the Blind in 2013. We continued
covering these institutions’ maintenance and repair costs.
•
In 2013, the number of students receiving our scholarships surpassed 1,400, and as in every year,
we gave awards to successful students and young artists.
•
With the Social Development Grant Program, we chose new projects developed by civil society
organizations working with groups of women, youth and the people with disabilities. Through a total
of thirty-seven projects, we directly touched the lives of over 70,000 people, and over 300,000
indirectly. In order to share project experiences, we held a meeting with the theme “Sowing
Season” and gathered the stories into a book.
•
Between 2006 and 2010, Sabanci Foundation had implemented the “Joint Program for the Protection
and Improvement of the Human Rights of Women and Girls” in six provinces. As a continuation of
that project, we launched a second program in late 2012, the three-year United Nations Joint
Program for the Improvement of Human Rights for Women. Implementation of the program
is underway in eleven pilot provinces.
•
The Turkey’s Changemakers program, created as a way to bring attention to the stories and work
of people who contribute to social development in Turkey, reached 100 people during its fourth
season in 2013, and entered its fifth season. We published the stories of 100 people creating change
in a book, and began using social media more efficiently in order to share their stories.
•
The subject of child brides, on which we have worked in support of civil society organizations since
2010, has gained an important place in public discussion as a result of our international collaboration
on the issue in 2013. We hosted the international Girls Not Brides workshop in Istanbul.
•
Speakers at the seventh Sabanci Foundation Seminar with the theme of Challenging the
Impossible included the founder and president of the Girls Not Brides Platform, Princess Mabel van
Oranje of the Netherlands, and Tererai Trent of Zimbabwe, founder of the Tinogona Foundation, who
shared her moving life story.
•
Like every year, we supported culture and the arts. We continued to support the State Theaters Sabanci Adana International Theater Festival, the Mehtap Ar Children’s Theater, the Ankara
International Music Festival, the Metropolis Ancient City excavations and the Philharmonic Youth
Orchestra of Turkey.
•
We were also thrilled that our efforts continued to be recognized in 2013 in the form of two major
international awards: The David Rockefeller Bridging Leadership Award and the International Gold
Star Quality Award.
As we prepare to celebrate our 40th Anniversary in 2014, we are confident that we will continue on our
path, further expanding our activities in an effective, sustainable and innovative manner. I would like
to sincerely thank our Board of Trustees members, our donors, our Foundation employees, all of our
partners/shareholders, and everyone who has lent us their support and encouragement.

Protect Human Rights of
Women and Girls operated in
six provinces with support from our
Foundation to strengthen the role of women
in community life and create social
awareness on the subject of women’s rights.
The new United Nations Joint Program to
Promote the Human Rights of Women,
which will operate for three years as a
continuation of the first Joint Program, was
launched in September 2012. This program
will be implemented in eleven pilot provinces
until 2015, with support from Sabanci
Foundation and in cooperation with the
United
Nations
Development
Program
(UNDP), the United Nations Entity for Gender
Equality and the Empowerment of Women
(UN Women), Sabanci University, the
Ministry of Family and Social Policy, the

Development Grant Program has received
824 applications from 70 of Turkey’s
provinces. The 37 projects selected and
implemented in 72 provinces, have received

for Turkey and the globe. Its “nondepartmental university” system that
allows students to choose their diploma
fields at the end of their sophomore year,
marks a first-time practice in Turkey.
Owing to this groundbreaking system,
students are equipped with the ability to
think in multidisciplinary terms in their

a holistic approach, and are furnished with
general culture that braces them to take a
firmer step into their prospective careers.

The excavations also unearthed footprints
of a young man and the tracks of a young

repair of the bath.
More than 10,000 small artifacts have
been recovered since the beginning of the
excavation.

Open-Call
Programs
Areas of Focus:
Grant
Projects on women, youth and persons
with disabilities are required to focus on
three themes:
These
are
grant
programs which are
announced through
all
civil
society
organizations
and
can be applied by institutions deemed
eligible according to previously (generally
between 1.5-2 months before) published
rules and in a set application period.
Projects selected after the evaluation
process are announced by the decision of
the Board of Trustees.
-
Solution Approaches:
Solution approaches prioritized by the
Foundation are gathered under three main
headings, namely service, sector, and
system.
The Open-Call Grant Program process
consists of the following steps:
-
Social Justice
Economic Participation
Social Participation
Grant Program Design and Approval
Grant Program Application
Preparation
Grant Program Announcement
Acceptation of Applications
Application Evaluation
Announcement of Grant Results
Signing of Protocol
Grant Monitoring, Communications
and Impact Assessment
Sabanci Foundation has merited a
reputation as the first foundation to
implement the most comprehensive and
institutional grant program of Turkey
through the Social Development Grant
Program
(SDGP).
The
Social
Development Grant Program supports
projects developed by non-governmental
organizations targeting women, youth,
and persons with disabilities. The strategy
of the Program is built on the main pillars
of fields and overlapping points, areas
of
focus,
and
solution-oriented
approaches:
-
Service approach: Projects that
directly touch the target audience
(women, youth and people with
disabilities)
-
Sector approach: Projects that aim
at sharing of knowledge, experiences
and capacity building for institutions
serving the target groups (NGO’s,
public institutions, etc.)
-
Systems approach: Projects that
influence decision-makers (Turkish
Grand National Assembly, Ministries,
Local Governments, etc.) in order to
bring accessibility and higher quality to
laws and practices that currently cause
inequalities and/or hinder participation
Launched for the first time in 2008, the
Social Development Grant Program has
attracted 824 applications from 70
provinces of Turkey, including 2013. A
total of 37 projects were implemented in
72 provinces with a grant support of 6.8
million TL.
The work that has been carried out as part
of the Social Development Program in
2013 is as follows:
Fields and Overlapping Points:
SDGP 2013 Communication
Activities:
Within the framework of the SDGP,
Sabanci Foundation supports a holistic
approach by focusing on the overlapping
points of work regarding women, youth,
and persons with disabilities. Sabanci
Foundation aims to add a “Youth Aspect”
to programs targeting women and people
with disabilities, a “Gender Aspect” to
programs targeting youth and persons
with disabilities, and a “Disability Aspect”
to programs focusing on women and
youth.

DEVELOPMENTS IN INSTITUTIONAL STRUCTURE
One important development in the
restructuring of Sabanci Foundation,
which began in 2006, is the integration
of the Foundation activities with
Information Technology. To this end,
projects have been developed to base all
processes on Information Technology.

The Foundation web site received
21% more visitors in 2013 than in
2012. In addition, there was a 14%
increase in page views over the
previous year. The site now offers the
ability to share with social media and
makes better use of multimedia
elements; plans are underway to
enrich and develop the content even
further.
Budget application introduced in
2013 allows the display of all Sabanci
Foundation’s income and expenses in
an
instant.
The
web-based
application thus offers faster and
more secure access to reports.
Travel application was developed to
allow
electronic
monitoring
of
information from travel by Sabanci
Foundation employees. This was
integrated
by
the
“Expense
Declaration” application, bringing
expenditures
under
electronic
control.
The www.farkyaratanlar.org web
site, which presents visual and
textual material from the bi-weekly
programs held as part of the Turkey’s
Changemakers
program,
was
redesigned in the last quarter of
2013. Radical changes in both the
design and software allowed the site
to better serve its visitors. Behind the
scenes, changes in the control panel
also made the site easier to manage.
Including subtitles in Turkish and
English, the content is shared with
visitors every two weeks on the
Turkey’s Changemakers and Sabanci
Foundation web sites, allowing it to
be shared with all its stakeholders.

•
Designed to manage institution and
project applications to the Social
Development Grant Program, the
web-based application continued to be
improved in 2013, and applications
were taken through the renewed
application. The application was also
efficient in the Social Development
Grant Program’s evaluation process.
•
Work on the archiving and updating of
new visual material related to EArchive project activities has been kept
continually up-to-date.
•
The personal information of all
stakeholders in a working relationship
with Sabanci Foundation, including
institutions and their employees, is
managed kept up-to-date with a
database.
•
Deeds of Foundation property, selfevaluation reports, activity reports and
Board of Trustees presentations have
been digitalized and loaded onto the
internal web, making them easier to
access.
•
The Human Resources application
allows up-to-date management of
employees’ personal, leave/vacation
and other information.
•
The Incoming-Outgoing Document
application, which digitally records all
documents
sent
and
received,
eliminates the risk of loss of
documents and feedback.
•
The Buying and Expense Declaration
applications
allow
web-based
monitoring,
management
and
reporting of payment entries on the
Foundation budget.
•
In addition, the electronic “To-Do
Lister” application allows fast, easy
monitoring of personnel’s work.
