Merrimack Valley People for Peace
celebration
In the first decade of May, the Merrimack Valley People
for Peace shall honor Pete Seeger' s wonderful presence
on Earth by singing his songs during our regular peace
vigils five days a week.
We kicked it off in New York on May 1. Those of us who
went to the anti-nuclear march and rally had a great time
singing Pete's songs and initiating a spirited sing-along
while waiting for the march to begin. Later on, we came
across a group of people in their twenties, who were
singing on the top of their voices "Last Night I Had the
Strangest Dream" ... in Swedish!
Join us during the next days in Andover for a peace vigil
and sing-along!

Living Earth's Pete Seeger 86th Birthday
Celebration
Living Earth's First Friday Community Potluck

Friends Meeting House

Portland, Oregon
The first week of May is time for celebration-not only for
the international May Day festivals of labor and pagan
Beltane on May 1, but to honor legendary American
folksinger Pete Seeger on his 86th birthday May 3.
Folk music has always been central to people's struggles
for justice, autonomy, dignity, democracy, and peace. For
some 60 years now, Pete Seeger's inimitable voice has
carried the songs of those movements across our land
and around the world. As we honor Pete at First Friday,
we will also celebrate the immeasurable contribution of

countless other folk musicians, both acclaimed and
unknown, whose songs and spirits have given voice to our
common longings for a better world.
Since people first banded together to claim rights and
power over their lives and communities, from drumbeats
to reed flutes to banjos and guitars, music has
accompanied our laments, stirred up our courage, and
given voice to our longing. "All music is folk music, since
all music is made by folks," Pete Seeger has said, but the
particular style and form commonly known as American
folk music found one of its strongest, most principled
voices in Pete.
Join us on First Friday when we honor Pete Seeger and
folk singers everywhere for their priceless contribution to
our culture and to the world
Bring a vegetarian or vegan dish to share, a fiddle or
banjo or whatever you play, and join us for our
celebration of folk music this month. There is no charge,
but donations are what make First Fridays possible.

May 3 (Tuesday): Oak Bluffs, Martha's
Vineyard, MA
As part of an informal national effort to honor folksinger/
environmentalist Pete Seeger on his 86th birthday, there
will be a party at Featherstone Center for the Arts at 6
p.m. on Tuesday May 3rd, on their outdoor stage. This is
a free family event for all ages.
In the Woodstock tradition, hillside seating is provided,
so bring a cushion! Rain or shine. The party will move
indoors, if inclement.
Island folk, including Tristan Israel, and Mark Alan
Lovewell, will perform (and you can sing-along to) some
of Pete's well-known tunes, such as "Where Have All the
Flowers Gone," "If I Had a Hammer," and "Turn, Turn,
Turn." There will be anecdotes told by a few folks whose
paths have crossed Pete's. Rumor has it that Nancy
Jephcote and Sam Carroll may lend their musical talents.
Come enjoy the music and cake and help sing Happy
Birthday to a man whose life has contributed much to the
great social/political and environmental causes of our
time.
In addition to being America's best-loved folksinger and
an untiring environmentalist, Pete Seeger is a national
treasure. He has been at the forefront of the labor
movement, the struggle for Civil Rights, the peace and

anti-war movements, and the fight for a clean world. His
music, beginning with the early folk group, The Weavers,
and his activism have given hope to millions of people all
over the world. Once blacklisted from national television
for being unafraid to voice his opinions, he was given the
nation's highest artistic honors at the Kennedy Center in
December 1994. In January 1996 he was inducted into
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Featherstone Center for the Arts is located a half-mile
towards Oak Bluffs from the "blinker" on Barnes Road,

"On Tuesday, Pete Seeger, the banjo-picking, folk-singing

civil rights movement, will mark his 86th birthday.
An acoustic banjo purist, Seeger once tried to pull the
