But from this time on the Son of Man will be
seated at the right hand of the power of God."
They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?"
He replied to them, "You say that I am." (Lk.
22:67-70)
The Mercy of God’s Silence (Part 9)
We find ourselves once again, in the Garden of
Gethsemani. After the Last Supper the Lord and His
Apostles went out to the Mount of Olives where
Jesus withdrew with Peter, James and John, the ones
who had witnessed His glorious transfiguration on
Mount Tabor. At that time, they couldn’t speak:
silence was the witness to the divine reality they were
witnessing. This time, on another Mount, they were
silent also. But it was the silence of an even deeper
and greater mystery that was about to come to pass.
As Jesus prayed to the Father to let the Cup of
Fulfillment pass from Him, the three Apostles were
experiencing the divine silence of deep and spiritual
sleep. They could not witness the action of the
Blessed Trinity at this most critical hour for the Lord!
The Father seems not to have directly answered the
Son, but He sent consolation through the angel that
comforted Him as He prepared for the sacrifice He
was about to offer. We are told in the Gospels that
Jesus saw His betrayer approaching in the darkness
of night. He receives the kiss of betrayal in silence
after uttering the words: "Judas, are you betraying
the Son of Man with a kiss?" (Luke 22:48) The
Lord also spoke in favor of peace when He told the
disciples to put away their swords. He then healed
the servant Malchus’ ear silently, with a divine touch.
After questioning those who had come to arrest Him,
he went with them silently, as His closest Apostles
and disciples ran away.
So we have before us the Savior, wrapped in silence
as He was wrapped in the mockingly purple royal
cloak used to abuse Him during His trial. We
observe Jesus silent before his accusers. We observe
Jesus silent before those who falsely accuse Him.
We see Jesus silent before the High Priest and then
exploding with the revelation of God as He
confirmed His sacred identity when asked if He was
the expected Messiah: "If I tell you, you will not
believe, and if I question, you will not respond.
We see Jesus before Pilate, again silent in His own
defense but confirming indirectly His divine identity:
“Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the
Jews?" He said to him in reply, "You say
so." (Luke 23:3)
Having been sent to Herod, He was again silent: “He
[Herod] questioned him [Jesus] at length, but he
gave him no answer.” (Lk. 23:9)
Jesus was sent back to Pilate, was scourged so badly
that the flesh was ripped from His body, the blood
pouring down onto the ground from His head and
from His wounds. He was brought back to the
praetorium, made to stand before the crowd that just a
few days before had hailed Him as king and Messiah.
He stood silently as they condemned Him to death.
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI comments on this
mystery of the Silence of Christ in his Apostolic
Exhortation V erbum Domini (W ord of the Lord):
“Jesus’ mission is ultimately fulfilled in the paschal
mystery: here we find ourselves before the “word of
the cross” (1 Cor 1:18). The word is muted; it
becomes mortal silence, for it has “spoken”
exhaustively, holding back nothing of what it had to
tell us. The Fathers of the Church, in pondering this
mystery, attributed to the Mother of God this
touching phrase: “Wordless is the Word of the Father,
who made every creature which speaks, lifeless are
the eyes of the one at whose word and whose nod all
living things move”. Here that “greater” love, the
love which gives its life for its friends (cf. Jn 15:13),
is truly shared with us.
In this great mystery Jesus is revealed as the word of
the new and everlasting covenant: divine freedom
and human freedom have definitively met in his
crucified flesh, in an indissoluble and eternally valid
compact. Jesus himself, at the Last Supper, in
instituting the Eucharist, had spoken of a “new and
everlasting covenant” in the outpouring of his blood
(cf. Mt 26:28; Mk 14:24; Lk 22:20), and shows
himself to be the true sacrificial Lamb who brings
about our definitive liberation from slavery.” (#12)

Parish Council Discernment
Parishioners are asked to submit names of
parishioners they would like to see serve on the St.
Ignatius Parish Council. Council members must be
registered members of the parish, at least 18 years of
age and in good standing with the church. We will be
accepting nominations until June 22nd. Nominations
forms can be found in the church entrances.

11th Sunday in Ordinary Time
"Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment, she stood
behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his
feet with her tears." This woman gave everything she
had to Jesus in her courageous display of public
repentance.
The flask of ointment, for starters, was undoubtedly
very expensive. To anoint Jesus in this way was to
pamper him with a luxury. Thus she honored Jesus
with the best gift she could give. But more than this
external offering, the woman also "gave" Jesus her
tears. She wept for her sins, for the hope of
forgiveness, and for the love of Christ. She literally
poured herself out before Jesus as she revealed the
depths of her soul. Also, to wipe his feet with her hair
was to give the gift of her humility. Cleaning
someone's feet is a lowly task to begin with; but to use
her own hair for the job revealed that she did not think
of herself as "too good." Simon the Pharisee, on the
other hand, had exactly that problem.
Jesus used the opportunity to distinguish between
those who love much, and those who love little. The
self-righteous, like Simon, have little room in their
hearts for love of others because they are so full of the
love of themselves. They feel they have nothing to
repent for. This woman, however, acknowledged her
weakness humbly and was all the more ready and
willing to love.
We, of course, are challenged to be as generous,
courageous, and humble as this sinful woman. We are
called not to compare our sins to others' that are
"worse" than ours, but rather to honestly recognize
where we have failed. Then, like this woman, we can
show great love to Christ by giving him the very best
of what we have.

Some people say that living together before
marriage helps you be more certain that a
couple will get along when they are married.
It seems logical, but my parents and priest do
not approve. Wouldn't marriages be better if
couples lived together before they married?
It might seem logical but actually living together
before marriage diminishes your chances of success.
Several people have examined the success rate and
found that couples who live together before marriage
do not do as well as couples who don't. Why? People
will attribute it to many things, but I would offer this.
Love is essentially a choice. We choose to spend time
together, to get to know one another, to share
ourselves and our interests. Bonds of love and
friendship are built and strengthened because of our
choosing to separate and come together again.
A good example of this is the life of priests. While
priests are assigned together at the same parish, they
might very well become good friends. They share the
same mission, living space and concerns. But
sometimes when one is transferred, they do not speak
for months or even longer. Why? There was no
choice. The relationship was built on things other
than interpersonal relationship. Couples who live
together can short circuit the process of developing
the interpersonal and intimate bond that is the basis
of a marriage and end up unknowingly building their
relationship on common tasks, shared living space,
and financial interdependence. Time, repetition,
choice and love are all part of building a marital
bond.
