One hour a week...
could change a child’s life
First Church has been mentoring children at T.A. Sims Elementary
School through the Kids Hope USA mentoring program for 5 years.
Many of our church members have stepped up to develop a
meaningful relationship with an “at risk” student by devoting one hour
a week with them on the school campus. In addition, each mentor/
student relationship is backed up by a behind-the-scenes prayer
partner. This wonderful ministry makes a difference in the lives of the
students, in the lives of the mentors and prayer partners and in the
teachers and administrators at the school.
Kids Hope Mentor:
Bob Diaz
I am Bob Diaz and I mentor a
wonderful 3rd grader named
Brian.
Brian is a very polite child and
has a great respect for those
around him. He is always willing
to learn and try things but he
has some issues with memory
retention. We work on any
homework that he had an issue

April 5, 12, and 19
A weekly communion service

Saving Jesus from the
Church: How to Stop
Worshiping Christ and Start
Following Jesus
Lenten Book Study led by
Bronson Davis
Mondays, March 14 - 28
7:00 - 8:30 p.m. in Room 147
Cost: $15.00 (includes the cost
of the book)
Over three consecutive Monday
nights, Bronson Davis will lead
discussions of this provocative
book that challenges church-goers
to focus on Jesus’ life and teachings
more than his death.
Robin
Meyers, a Congregational minister
and college professor in Oklahoma
City, argues that the marriage
of bad theology and hypocritical
behavior by the church has eroded
our spiritual lives. Taking the best of
biblical scholarship, Meyers recasts
core Christian concepts in an effort to
save Christianity from its obsession
with personal salvation. Not a plea
to try something brand new, but
rather the recovery of something
very old, Saving Jesus from the
Church makes the case for what it
means to follow Jesus’ teachings
today. This book is particularly good
for those interested in the emerging
church and/or those who would like to
understand some of the fundamental
tenets of progressive Christianity.

Sacred Stories – A Short-Term
Covenant Experience
Led by Nancy Tully
Wednesdays, March 16 – April 20
6:00 - 7:30 p.m. in Room 230
During this six-week covenant
experience, we will explore how our
personal stories are woven into and
within the purpose that God may have
for our lives, for our church and for
our community. Each of us has been
created for purpose, and against the
backdrop of our individual stories, is
a God who is calling – calling you,
calling our church and calling our
community. In this Lenten class, we
will explore how to find meaning in
the professions that we work within,
the community that surrounds us,
and the world in which we live.

Why Jesus? Lenten Book Study
led by Rev. Linda McDermott
Wednesdays, March 23 – April 6
(three sessions)
Two class times: Noon - 1:00 p.m.
or 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Cost: $15.00 (includes the cost of
the book)
No figure in history has received
more attention, and has been less
understood, than Jesus of Nazareth.
Many recent writings portray Jesus
as a vaguely kind and friendly person
yet neglect the mysterious preacher
who continues to invite men and
women to claim the true meaning of
their lives. This Jesus, says Willimon,
continues to fascinate and compel
us, in spite of all the attempts to
domesticate his message and put
distance between us and the call to
follow. “In his radical teachings, his
self-sacrificial death, and his liberating
life beyond death, this Jesus teaches
and shows us to true meaning and
purpose of our own lives.” Through a
focus on Jesus as vagabond, savior,
storyteller, preacher, home wrecker,
and party person,
Dr. Willimon
creates an entirely readable book
about someone most don’t know as
well as they would like to think they do.
Often informative and occasionally
humorous, this book keeps the
reader thinking and entertained
long after they have turned the final
page. “This book made me feel like
I’d managed to get into a lecture by
one of those college professors that
everyone loves and wants to attend
his classes!”

Maundy Thursday, April 21
“Will You Let Me Wash Your Feet?”
Labyrinth, Foot Washing and
Meditation led by Charles Gaby
and the eleven:eleven team
6:00 - 9:00 p.m. in Wesley Hall
Few traditional Christian practices
are as challenging to our rugged
individualist (and sometimes isolative)
culture than foot washing.
This
commemoration of Jesus’ washing
of the disciple’s feet is an invitation
to a deeply spiritual experience in
which we open ourselves to grace in
a very intimate way. When you come
to Wesley Hall you can expect to find
the labyrinth spread across the floor.
You will be welcomed by a guide with
information about this walking prayer
experience as well as the foot washing
experience. There will be music and
a slide show on the screen (Images
of Compassion and Connection)
to support your meditation. The
experience is “come and go” and you
are welcome to partake of all or part
of what is offered. The time frame for
walking the labyrinth and participating
in foot washing is typically about 45
minutes, but you may also want to
spend time in the space in prayer and
meditation.
Maundy Thursday Worship
Service: Thursday, April 21 at
7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary
Maundy Thursday, also known as
Holy Thursday, marks the beginning
of the most solemn and joyful
celebration of the Christian year –
the death and resurrection of Jesus.
Going out to be God’s people in the world.
On Maundy Thursday we recall Jesus’ last meal with his
disciples and his new commandment to love one another.
Holy Communion will be served during the service. This
moving service will culminate in the Garden where all will
be invited to leave in silence.
Good Friday Worship Services Friday, April 22
Morning Service: The morning service will include a
meditation, prayer and communion and will be held at
7:00 a.m. in Leonard Memorial Chapel. Rev. Brooks
Harrington will lead the service.
Noon Service: The midday service will be held in
Leonard Memorial Chapel. This is a quiet and meditative
service commemorating the day on which Jesus was
crucified and died. Holy Communion will be served.
Good Friday Service of Shadows: The evening service
will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. The service will
include a series of readings from the scriptures combined
with moving musical pieces as the altar is stripped of all
adornment. This emotionally evocative and symbolically
rich service ends in darkness as each worshipper leaves
in silence and hopeful anticipation of the joy of Easter.

Holy Saturday Prayer Retreat led by Emily
Haeussler, Rev. Kay Johnson and Dr. Len
Delony
Saturday, April 23 from 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in Room
230
On this last day of Lent, also known as Holy Saturday, we
are invited to go deeper into prayer, so we might discover
new depths of God’s healing and loving Presence. As
we listen with prayerful openness, we discover that we
are being transformed, and called to follow Jesus the
Christ into new ways of living. Join facilitators Emily
Haeussler, Kay Johnson and Len Delony as they provide
opportunities to experience these deeper callings in the
Spirit through centering prayer, welcoming prayer, Lectio
Divina and intercessory prayer.
Luxury Fast
During Lent we are asking our members to commit to
a fast from one of their luxuries and track the savings
that are achieved. (Examples could include: Starbucks,
lunch out, a night at the movies, etc.) We ask that you
consider saving the money you would have spent and
donating to the needy. The proceeds of your fast will be
donated to the Financial Assistance Fund at the First
Street Methodist Mission. This fund provides emergency
assistance to clients who are having difficulty with their
rent, utilities, prescriptions, and other items that most
of us can readily handle. Consider it this way – a fast
from one of your luxuries will provide for someone else’s
necessity.
Annual Easter Egg Hunt at Lyle Lodge will
be held on Saturday, April 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00
p.m. at Lyle Lodge, the church’s lake property on Eagle
Mountain Lake. For more information please contact the
Children’s Ministry at 817/339-5086.

Single Adult Ministry “We Are God’s
Beloved” Spring Retreat
FUMC’s single adults are invited to attend the Tarrant Area Singles
Spring Retreat on April 1-3 at Prothro Center on Lake Texoma.
The retreat entitled “We are God’s Beloved” will be led by our own
Rev. Phyllis McDougal. During the weekend retreat attendees will
explore the following questions:How Do You See the World? Are You
Busy and Always on the Run? Do You Slow Down Enough to Explore
Your Spirituality? Who are You Really? Who is God? Do you Know That
You Are a Child of God?
This weekend will give you time to reflect on all these questions.
Through many experiences you will deepen your relationship with
God. Spirituality means certain kinds of inner experiences, often
characterized as calm, spacious, alert, loving, and non-anxious, with a
sense of connection with everything and everyone… Spirituality is how
we are in relationship to God, to other people and the world around
us, and to ourselves.
Join singles from our church and the Central Texas Conference for
this wonderful retreat led by Rev. Phyllis McDougal, Associate Minister
at First United Methodist Fort Worth. Laurie Simmons from the 11:11
band will be providing wonderful music throughout the weekend.
Cost is only $130 and that includes lodging for 2 nights and 4 meals
(3 on Saturday and Breakfast on Sunday) and the retreat expenses.
For additional information you can Contact Cindy Young at
817/924-9443 or check out the Tarrant Area Singles calendar with the
flyer and registration attached for the April 1-3 event on the Central
Texas Conference website www.ctcumc.org.

knowing it.”

with, read books, take AR tests in the library and play many of the
games that Kids Hope has donated to the school.
I recently challenged Brian’s entire Third Grade class to get a “B”
overall class grade on a test and if they did I would give them a pizza
party in their classroom. Well they did it and 2 weeks ago I took 13
pizzas, capri sun, water, and cupcakes that my girlfriend Vonda (also
a church member) made for them. They had a great time and were
so happy that they made their goal in the math test.
What I get out of the Kids Hope program is so much more than I have
ever expected. I get to see the smile on their face when they do well,
give them encouragement when they fall short and see the progress
that they make to ensure their futures are bright!
