Kite Flying in Payson
This Club event went off on schedule and on time on an 85 degree
May 14, 2016 day. What a beautiful day to drive thru mountains
along
the Beeline Hwy to Payson. Our playground was the green grass
of Green Valley Park in Payson. On the tables in our Ramada, we
assembled kites, pre rigged with string and tail. Some members
brought
box kites and a US Navy aircraft kite. It was a great venue amid
friends and a fun activity.
Special thanks of appreciation go out to Joyce and Gerald Young for
holding the Ramada and obtaining some parking spaces. They
even had a Mustang banner printed special for the event.
Following kiting, we assembled for lunch at Crosswinds Restaurant
at the Payson Airport, where we enjoyed great food in a private dining
room with a view of the runway that had recreational air traffic.
Recall Notice
Below is the current recall notice on 2005-2014 Mustangs. Parts are available for the driver
side at this time. Should only take about 40 minutes to complete. Newest notice is for the
passenger side airbag. Currently there are no parts yet to fix this.
GTOAA Nationals
So I had the opportunity to attend the GTOAA Nationals a couple of weeks ago in Bellevue
WA (yes I know not a Mustang event but it was still interesting). The judging they do is equal to
what we do in MCA and is getting more critical. They are trying to become the new NCRS. My
friend’s 69 GTO Judge that I helped restore for 1.5 years (some of you have seen) attended and
they thoroughly went through it. Apparently they have teams of 4 that divide and conquer. One
guy does the engine compartment and will look at head numbers, numbers on the block, the water
pump, and carburetor to make sure everything is correct (and sometimes date codes). My friend’s
carburetor and water pump were wrong and missed points, along with the J clips that hold the
wheel wells to the fender. Also the rivets were painted on the RAM air pan instead of being natural. One guy is underneath the car the whole time looking at everything including body bushings
(the bushing are color coded according to where they are on the car). They go as far as detail as
the jacking decal for 68-69 look the same but the corners are square on 69 and round on 68 but the
reproduction companies only produce the 68 decal. One guy told us last year he got marked down
because the stitching in his front seats was not the correct depth even though he bought the back
and front seats at the same time from the best reproduction company for Pontiacs. One judge is
looking at the interior the whole time, while the last one is checking paint, body alignment, gaps,
and everything else. Before judging is even done, the car has to go through tech and everything
has to work (horns, headlights, turn signals, hide away headlight doors, radios, glove box lights, 8
track players, remote mirrors, power antennas, etc). When we first got there, we initially lost two
points because the 8 track player did not work (never tested in the 3 years the car was done since
we didn’t have an 8 track tape). After a phone call to the person who rebuilt it for us and getting a
ground wire attached, we were able to get the 8 track playing Led Zeppelin and got our 2 points
back. They also require you to send them your VIN number and tag codes at registration and will
contact PHS to verify your car is what you say it is (etc GTO, Tempest, GTO Judge, etc) Will
MCA eventually go this route to check everything at one of their shows? Only time will tell.
Keep in mind this GTOAA’s concourse restoration level that all cars are subject to. We are still
waiting to hear back our results but are already scouting out parts we know were incorrect.

Help Wanted
As I write this, there are currently 152 days left in the year. At that time I would
like to pass the torch on to someone else to do the newsletter. I have been creating it for 4 years now and I believe the time has come for someone else to take
over as I would like to focus in on some other aspects of my life next year. So
what do you need to do the newsletter? Well , a program that can incorporate
graphics, pictures, and text boxes. Microsoft publisher works best but I bet
someone can get Microsoft Word and Power Point to work wonders. The only
trick is you have to know how many pages you can create. The minimum is 12
pages and then increase by 4 after that for the printing to work out. (16, 20, 24)
And then save the file as PDF and e-mail it to Penny to print at Berge Ford. I’m
hoping that someone will be able to step up soon and perhaps inject some new
ideas for the newsletter.
