Chamber in 2016
The 2016 Educator of the Year was awarded to 1st grade teacher Kristin Morse of
Madison Central School. The 2016 Friend of Education honored was DeLon Mork
owner of Madison Dairy Queen.
The Chamber Education Committee
hosted the Educator’s Reception and
Chamber Member Mixer at Nicky’s
Restaurant with over 110 attending.
The event is a time when educators of all
levels gather to renew acquaintances, share ideas
and welcome new educators to the community. It
is also a time for the Chamber members and
committee to: show appreciation and support to
educators and their vital role in the future of our
community, encourage involvement in the
community and increase their exposure of the
opportunities available. These are some of the
reasons this event is held by the Chamber
Education Committee annually. Chair of the
Education Committee, Charlotte Groce, served as
emcee for the event and related educators,
presenters and award recipients to food recipes,
ingredients, preparers and chefs that added to the
interest throughout the program. The 2016
Chamber Education Awards were confidential
until the event.
The 2016 Educator of the Year was awarded
to 1st grade teacher Kristin Morse of Madison
Central School. The 2016 Friend of Education
honored was DeLon Mork owner of Madison
Dairy Queen.
Educator of the Year is given to recognize an
educator who has made an impact on education,
is involved in the Madison community and has
the personal characteristics that make him / her
worthy of the recognition. Kristin Morse of
Madison Elementary School was nominated by
an educator and parent of a 1st grade student.
The quote “A teacher takes a hand, opens a mind
and teaches a heart”, provided by the parent
shared that Morse has done just that and feels
honored that Morse was the 1st grade teacher of
three of their four children. She is described as a
dedicated, compassionate and committed
educator who strives to bring out the best in each
of the individuals she teaches. Morse promotes
school-to-home connection by communication and
activities for parents to reinforce skills being
taught. She is also described as providing
inspirational and engaging methods to teach
math concepts and reading.
During her
acceptance, Morse said “I have always wanted to
be a teacher”. Morse is not only a teacher but also

Stan’s a strong
presence on Egan Ave
for 7 decades
Stan’s Men’s & Women’s Apparel, a long
time chamber member, will celebrate its 70th
anniversary this November. Stan’s has been
a mainstay of downtown Madison since 1946
providing men’s clothing, formal wear rental,
accessories, and shoes.
Dick Fawbush, owner of Stan’s, said his
family got involved with the store when his
father, Lyle Fawbush, purchased one-third of
the business in 1967. Dick worked at the
store through college and continued on after
graduating from Dakota State. In 1975, Dick
purchased the business from his dad with
partner Leland White. In 1990, Fawbush
bought out White and became sole owner with
his wife, Donna. There were three previous
partners/owners – Stan Hauck and Elmer
(Hap) Habeger, Lyle Fawbush and Jim
Towlerton, Leland White and Dick. In 2001,
Stan’s transitioned from being only a men’s
clothing shop to offering both men’s and
women’s apparel. Besides clothing, women’s
items include shoes, purses, scarves, jewelry
and coats.
Stan’s employs three people: Lois
Thuringer, a full-time employee, has worked
at Stan’s for the last 28 years. Julie Jones and
Dodi Young are part-time employees.
Fawbush feels fortunate to have such
qualified people working for him.
Customers have come to Stan’s for nearly
three-quarters of a century for several
reasons:
Quality merchandise & selection – known
brand names are found throughout the store.
New brands and variety provide customers
choices within a hometown retail store.
Fashionable apparel and accessories –
customers can find new fashion trends from
business to casual wear. Needing a gift? You
will find some great options for birthdays,
anniversaries, or holidays.
Customer Service - Stan’s believes in
customer service. You are greeted with a

From the Board. . .
South Dakota Manufacturing Week
(Oct 3 - 7) recognizes the contributions and
benefits manufacturing provides to local
communities and the State of South
Dakota.
Madison, not unlike other
communities throughout the state,
contains a variety of manufacturing that
contribute to the community through
employment opportunities, generating tax
revenue for the city and county, and more
importantly adds a multiplier effect with
other industries.
The local Madison area has nearly 30
businesses classified as manufacturing.
Although some organizations are small in
terms
of
total
employees,
their
contribution to the local economy should
not be overlooked. Consider the following
facts:
•
Manufacturing is 10% of the
state’s workforce with 41,175 jobs, the 5th
highest business group in total jobs in
South Dakota.
•
Because manufacturing has so
many substantial links with so many other
sectors throughout the economy, the
correlating output stimulates more
economic activity across society than any
other sector.
•
Every dollar in final sales of
manufactured products supports $1.48 in
output from other sectors - this is the
single largest multiplier of any sector.
•
Manufacturing plants have a
powerful and positive impact on economic
development.
Recognition of manufacturing and the
inherent benefits should be a continuous
event
throughout
all
communities.
Consider the impact on local or regional
economies
if
one
or
even
two
manufacturing organizations elected to
depart Madison. The immediate concern
will be with the loss of meaningful jobs,
although the long-term impact to the
community will be felt for years to come.
The next time you drive by one of the
many manufacturing companies in
Madison, take time to
consider the value they
provide
to
our
community.

2016 Friend of Education is DeLon Mork who spends countless hours supporting the growth and
productivity of Madison through active support of education. Mork was honored by being nominated
and said, “I always believed in the value of education. After I had the opportunity to realize the

wanted even more to support the importance of good teachers.”
He is a member of the SD Blue Ribbon Task Force for Education, Junior Achievement, Madison

smile and often some conversation to make
your shopping experience personal. Stan’s
provides free gift wrapping, easy layaway
plans, and free in-town deliveries.
Alterations – Stan’s offers alteration
service on in-store purchases and rentals.
They also accept outside alterations. The
service of alterations helps to ensure the
satisfaction of their customer.
Community Involvement – Dick and
Donna are both active in the Madison
Community and Chamber. They have both
received the Chamber Distinguished Service
Award. Donna has served on the Chamber
Board of Directors since 2010, member of
Leadership Madison and the Governmental
Affairs Committees. She also serves on the
City of Madison Planning Commission. Dick
has served on the Chamber Board of Directors
and been a member of the Retail &
Community Promotions Committee of the
Chamber throughout his ownership, serving
as chair for many years. Dick has also served
on the South Dakota Retailers Association
Board of Directors. Over the years, they have
both been actively involved in the Madison
Schools and Dakota State University.
Stan’s has adjusted to a changing retail
landscape during its seven decades of
operation. The biggest change is online
shopping. It’s hard for small hometown
specialty stores to compete. Dick feels the
longevity of his business comes down to three
things: a great staff, customer service, and a
quality product.

Madison Manitou/Gehl plant during I Make America Tour and Interlakes Area United
Way drawing on September 1 with President/CEO Manitou Americas-Dan Miller.
“I Make America” Tour was in Madison coordinated by the Association of Equipment
Manufacturing (AEM). AEM objective is to support and raise awareness of the issues effecting
equipment manufacturing in the USA. The event drew hundreds of area residents and
dignitaries to the event that promoted the impact of American manufacturing to our economy.
President/CEO of Manitou Americas – Dan Miller of West Bend, WI welcomed those
attending and discussed the company involvement in AEM. Miller noted that manufacturing
has a significant impact upon our national economy and our position in world trade. Statistics
posted were: For every $1 Billion in exports of manufactured goods, 15,000 new American jobs
are created. Also, for every $1 Billion invested in U.S. Highways 27,823 jobs are supported
which generates $6.2 Billion in economic activity.
U.S. Senator John Thune attended as the Chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce,
Science, and Transportation and supports the strong manufacturing in the country. He also
commended local manager Dustin Williams of Manitou/Gehl for the positive impact the
company has upon local, regional, national and international equipment sales and
manufacturing.
The Interlakes Area United Way chair Rob Bucholtz shared the IAUW appreciation in being
a part of the I Make America Tour stop for the 2016 Gehl R135 Skid Steer Loader drawing.
Nearly all 500 raffle tickets were sold for the drawing at $100 each for the fundraiser to support
nearly 40 organizations in Lake, Miner and Moody Counties. Owners Jeff and Tom Bloom of
Lake County International, distributors of the Gehl and Mustang skid steers, donated the R135
valued at over $38,800 along with the Manitou/Gehl Madison plant. The winner was Brad
Vander Wahl.
Madison Plant Manager Dustin Williams recognized Lake Area Improvement Corporation
and the Madison community for their efforts in recruiting the Company to Madison in 1973
and to the Madison plant manager, Francis Janis (1973 to 2002) for the development from the
initial Madison plant structure and continued progress.
Congratulations to members Manitou/Gehl, Lake County International, and Interlakes Area

2016 Steam Threshing Jamboree Recap
Submitted Article – Faron Wahl-Manager Historic
Prairie Village
The 54th annual Steam Threshing Jamboree
at Prairie Village was a magnificent event,
producing strong attendance all four days.
Many who have been a part of these festivities
for years remarked that the line of traffic
pouring in the gates Thursday appeared to be
typical of our heavier Friday volumes. The
crowds
grew
significantly
Friday
and
Saturday, and Sunday remained solid all day.
We were honored to host the Massey Expo of
North America as part of our Jamboree, with
registrants from at least 14 states and 2
Canadian provinces.
Those handling the
administration for the Massey group made an
impressive show of it, marked by a sharp lineup of equipment and much friendly interaction.
We appreciate their confidence in choosing the
Village to host their expo, and we hope they
will consider our site again in the future.
Our staff worked tirelessly throughout not
only the four day event, but for several days in
advance of Thursday, processing campers,
exhibitors, and attendees, as well as ensuring
our grounds and infrastructure were ready.
Volunteers filled roles beyond count, and
created a solid framework to help support the
countless details involved with an event of this
scope. We heard many, many comments from
folks who were delighted with the presentation
and condition of the Village during Jamboree.
We are already planning and looking
forward to Jamboree 2017, where we’ll feature
Allis-Chalmers. Mark your calendars now for
August 24-27, 2017 and make plans to join us.
We hope to see you there! And as always,
learn about Jamboree and all things Prairie
Village at prairievillage.org.

Trojan Days Parade September 24
Submitted article
The 2016 Dakota State University Trojan
Days Parade Committee would like to invite
any organization to participate in this year’s
homecoming parade and also attend. The
DSU annual event will begin at 10:00am on
Saturday, September 24 on Egan Ave.
The homecoming theme this year will be
"True to the Blue." This is meant to give your
organization a chance to celebrate your past,
present, and future; to show how prideful,
loyal, and “true” you are to your organization,
the community, the country, etc.
For
example, DSU has a strong heritage in
teacher education so you might see a group
celebrate the educators in our community
that are DSU graduates.
Community clubs and businesses are
welcome and encouraged to register their
entry in the parade. The committee will
recognize the community entries judged the
best in three categories: Most Humorous,
Most Original, and Most Beautiful.
To register to be in the parade you can go
online to http://dsu.edu/events/dsu-trojandays-homecoming-parade,
contact
the
Student Services Center at (605) 256-5146, or
email [email protected]. Please
register your parade entry by Friday,
September 16.
The Trojan Days Parade Committee would
like to thank the community of Madison and
surrounding areas for their incredible support
of the annual parade over the years. We look
forward to that support again this fall. If you
have questions contact Student Services at
256 -5146.

Montgomery’s
128 years of Progress!
Submitted by Eric Sinclair 5th generation
owner
This fall Montgomery's will renovate the
Madison showroom. The exterior facade will
be the first phase, including a facelift and the
addition of a dedicated entrance to our
Mattress 1st Sleep Center. This phase of the
project will align the look and brand of the
Madison showroom with our other showrooms
in Eastern, SD, as well as heighten the
awareness and our dedication to our mattress
and sleep business, Mattress 1st.
Over the last year, we have been updating
the interior of the showroom. Including
updates to our Flooring Center, the addition
of the Magnolia Home line, the introduction
of the Market and fresh paint and vignettes
throughout. As the exterior facade nears
completion, additional interior changes will
include state of the art sleep technology,
selection plus some surprise additions.
The team at Montgomery's would like to
thank the Madison community and
surrounding area for the support they have
provided through the years. We hope that this
investment shows our continued focus on
bringing the best home fashions and shopping
experience to Madison.
