Emergency Preparedness training exercise March 1
by Dale Freeman, Tyler County
EOC
On Saturday, March 1, 2014,
there will be a training exercise
for emergency preparedness
occurring in or around Woodville. The Tyler County
Emergency Management
Department and the American Red Cross will co-host the
event with the participation of
the Tyler County Sheriff ’s Department, the Woodville Police
Department, the Woodville
Fire Department, the Tyler
County Search and Rescue Organization, The Tyler County
Hospital, and Dogwood EMS.
The situation or scenario
that we will train or respond
to will be a simulated weather
related disaster affecting a
single neighborhood. Unlike
in a natural or man-made disaster, we will have the luxury
of slowly, even methodically,
walking through the steps of
the event and even redoing the
steps until we get it right. At
this time, we are not releasing
the details of the scenario or
the location where it is going
to occur to keep to the mission
of the training and the integrity of the lessons learned.
We will, at the same time,
be activating the Emergency
Operations Center to respond
as if this were an actual event.
We will notify the homeowners in our target neighborhood
so that they do not become
alarmed with the activities occurring on the street in front of
their homes. Our training and
our activities will be limited
only to the street. We will not
be coming onto your property
as would likely occur in an actual emergency.
The homeowners seeing us
on the streets are invited if they
like to walk out to the streets
and interact with responders as
would occur in a natural event.
The Tyler County Emergen-
cy Management Office would
like to thank the residents of
the target neighborhood in
advance for the use of their
neighborhood for this exercise.
We believe that exercises and
training such as this will allow
us to find the right people to
fill our positions, making them
better capable of responding
to any event that might occur.
We hope the efforts of our
career personnel, as well as our
volunteers, in this situation
give comfort to the citizens of
Tyler County that we are always there and we are prepared
and capable of handling whatever situation might occur.
Search for truant student leads to two arrests
by Emily Waldrep
Several deputies, along with
Woodville School Resource
Officer Bubba Sheffield, were
checking on the welfare of a
14-year-old truant child in
Ivanhoe Tuesday, February 11,
when they found the child living
in deplorable living conditions
with her mother and another
male.
“At the time of the investigation the temperature was
extremely cold,” said Chief
Deputy Phil Ryan. “There was
no running water, no electricity,
no heat and almost all of the
windows were busted out of the
mobile home.”
Child Protective Services
(CPS) was notified of the con-
dition of the home, but decided
that since the child was 14 years
old, they felt like the child was
in no danger.
“We were not happy with
CPS’s decision to take no action
on behalf of child,” Ryan said.
The white male that was living
in the residence was not related
to the child and was reported to
be the boyfriend of the child’s

Continuance
granted in
Maddox child
custody hearing
A Tyler County Court has granted a continuance until April 9
in the child custody hearing of Madison Maddox, the five-yearold daughter of Nathan Maddox, who, with his wife Krystal, was
murdered outside Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Colmenseil
January 19.
Madison, who was living with her paternal grandparents, Paul
and Letha Westfall, and her mother, Kristen Westfall, will remain
in foster care until the judge makes a custody decision. Madison
was removed from the Westfall’s home shortly after the incident.
Coy Lee Collins, a special investigator with Child Protective
Services (CPS), testified at the first hearing that Madison was removed from the Westfall’s care and placed into foster care because
methamphetamine residue, a syringe and a loaded .22 revolver were
found in the Westfall’s home, and could be accessible to the five
year old. Collins also said there were sanitation concerns because
of raw sewage on the property.
Madison’s paternal grandfather, Jim Maddox, said that he was
just interested in the child’s safety. “At this point the main thing is
Madison’s safety, and it is not a matter of what I want or my wife
wants or what the Westfalls want,” Maddox said. “It is all about
Madison’s safety.”
There are several agencies working on the murder case. All leads
are being taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.
“We have some excellent agencies from the Tyler County Sheriff ’s
Department, Texas Rangers, and even the FBI who have come
in,” Maddox said. “They have been available as far as resources and
council with law enforcement.”
Anyone with information about the murder should phone Tyler
County Sheriff ’s Department at (409) 283-2172.

was arrested on both of those

The mother of the child, who
was not identified, was also
arrested for an outstanding
warrant.

down the road. The mother said it was not the first time the children had left the house in a similar fashion.
“The kids would have had to walk down two county roads and
then cross Highway 92 to get to where they were,” said Chief
Deputy Phil Ryan.
Highway 92 is a dangerous, major highway for anyone to be
crossing and is much more dangerous and even deadly for young
children to be crossing unattended.
McCoy was placed under arrest for Endangering a Child and
the children were turned over to the custody of their grandmother.
CPS was also notified, and there will be a follow-up investigation.
Law enforcement officials say “thanks” to a witness of the event,
who stopped the children from crossing Highway 92 a second
time and was able to pick them up and take them to Fred Grocery,
avoiding a possible disaster.

Law clarifies where electioneering may occur
AUSTIN — Questions over where you

at election time.A
new law to solve
such issues is on
the books.

The new law trumps local practices that
previously may have prevented citizens from
engaging in political speech outside of the
100-foot zone. “This change in law protects
First Amendment rights by assuring that
people are able to express their political views
without fear of prosecution or persecution,”
said state Rep.Ron Simmons,R-Carrollton,
primary author of HB 259, in a Feb. 18
statement.
“Language was specifically included in the
bill to authorize reasonable time, place, and
manner restrictions on electioneering conducted outside of the 100-foot marker,so long
as electioneering is not prohibited altogether,”
Simmons added.“HB 259 protects some of
our nation’s most fundamental rights: the
freedom of speech and the right to vote.”

The agency estimated more than 60 percent
of the women served will receive family planning services and that to be eligible for the
program women must be 18 years of age or
older and at or below 200 percent of Federal
Poverty Level guidelines. According to the
Texas Health and Human Services Commission, 3.3 million Texas women are at or
below the Federal Poverty Level.
On Feb. 18, the first day of early voting
in the primary election, the Texas Department of Public Safety publicized a reminder
that election identification certificates are
available at driver license offices, with select
offices open on Saturdays and at mobile

March 2nd, the
real Independence Day, falls on Sunday this year, we
are having our Toast on Saturday.
The program begins about 1 p.m. from
the Village Stage. After a welcome
from Fred Sullivan, president of the
Tyler County Heritage Society Board
of Directors, there will be posting of
the colors by the local VFW chapter
followed by pledges to the American flag
and the Texas flag. Jim Boone, former
president of the Heritage Society, will
be the speaker.
School children from St. Paul’s Episcopal School will sing some of their
favorite Texas songs and share the toasts
that they have written to our great state.
I’ve left out several parts of the program
in an attempt to get your curiosity up
enough to come out for the program. At
2 p.m. we will raise our cups of spring
water in our Toast to Texas, followed by a
Black Powder Salute to Texas presented
by members of the Sons of Confederate
Veterans. Refreshments will be served in
the Collier Store at the conclusion. We
hope you will be able to attend.
As March “marches” on, the next event
is Festival of the Arts, the first weekend
in the three weekend Dogwood Festival.
Festival of the Arts is Saturday, March
22, beginning at 9 a.m. In addition to
quilts on display we will have other arts
and crafts. Quilters, spinners and weavers and others will be demonstrating
pioneer arts.
At 10 a.m. on Saturday, we will have
the official opening of the Fiber Arts
Building, complete with small ceremony
and ribbon-cutting followed by a tour
of the building. In the afternoon from
1-3 p.m., we will have the authors of a
new Texas book, “Just Between Us”,
autographing their book. Admission
for the day is $4 for adults and $2 for
children under twelve.
Also on Saturday, the County Historical Commission is sponsoring a
tour of historical places within Tyler
County, and the Village is one of the
stops on the tour. Tour tickets are $10
each and proceeds benefit the courthouse preservation.
Sunday, March 23, is the date for
the Dinner on the Grounds. This is
our ninth year for this event. Tickets
are $10 for adults and $5 for children
under 12. The ticket allows you to tour
the Village and eat some of whatever
shows up on the dinner table. We
never really know for sure what we
will have, but we are sure we will have
brisket, pork, sausage, chicken, assorted
veggies, cornbread, homemade bread,
salads, and desserts plus tea or water.
Tickets should be ready soon. Plan

An appeal filed by the State of Texas was

scheduled 90 minutes of collective time for
arguments to be heard by the United States

administration from broadening greenhouse
gas enforcement standards to include more
sources of carbon dioxide emissions.
Out & About in
Spurger With Ms. Billie
There are millions of folks across our nation who volunteer in various capacities in order
to improve the lives of their neighbors. These volunteers would cost millions of dollars
to the communities they serve if they were paid for their services.
I want to dedicate my column this month to the volunteer fire departments who serve
the citizens of Tyler County and particularly the Spurger Volunteer Fire Department.
According to the National Fire Protection Association,of the 1,129,250 firefighters in the
U.S. in 2012, 783,300 (69%) were volunteer firefighters. There are an estimated 30,100
fire departments in the U.S., 20,050 of which are fully volunteer. We have 10 volunteer
fire departments located in Tyler County and they are: Spurger, Fred, Dam B, IvanhoeHillister, Woodville, Warren, Chester, Colmesneil, Shady Grove and White Tail Ridge.
Communities served by volunteer firefighters depend on them to be their first line of
defenseformanytypesofemergencies.Theseemergenciesincludefires,medicalincidents,
terrorist events,natural disasters,hazardous materials incidents,water rescue emergencies
and general public service calls. These volunteers invest a large amount of time serving
theircommunitiesandareoncall24/7.Timecommitmentsincludeoperationalresponses,
training, fundraising, maintenance and administrative duties. Volunteering in the fire
service is one of the most demanding and time consuming volunteer activities today.
I decided to visit Spurger Fire Chief Ellis Jones in an effort to learn more about our
volunteer fire department. All of the volunteer fire departments in Tyler County, except
for Woodville and Chester, serve in emergency service districts and receive tax dollars
based on three cents per $100 based on appraised value of property in their district.
Woodville and Chester are funded through their cities.
As members of emergency service districts, these fire departments are eligible to apply
for grants through the Texas Forest Service and to apply for federal grants. Each fire
department has an emergency service district board from their district that must approve
the spending of any tax money. They are required to prepare an annual budget that has to
be approved by Commissioner’s Court and are subject to audits. There is a Tyler County
Firefighter Association that meets monthly inWoodville and is attended by the fire chiefs.
Money raised from fundraisers is used for equipment and maintaining the fire station. The cost for one fireman to suit up in bunker gear is $2,000, and a self-contained
breathing apparatus costs an additional $5,000.
Chief Jones states that they fight structure, forest and pipeline fires, provide lift assistance
for medical transports, set up landing zones for medical helicopters when required for
traffic accidents and use “jaws of life” for vehicle accidents. It should be noted that only
three volunteer fire departments in the county, including Spurger, have this equipment.
Spurger Volunteer Fire Department has an agreement with other volunteer fire departments to provide assistance when necessary.
Spurger has 18 firefighters and their families who serve our community. Chief Jones
says, “each firefighter is a member of the team, and it requires all members to work
together for [the] team to function.” If you think this isn’t enough information that you
didn’t know abut your fire department, there’s more!
Spurger Volunteer Fire Department has recently built two brush trucks and is currently
rebuilding a rehab unit. What is a rehab unit? It is a vehicle that provides storage for
drinking water, snacks for energy, contains an ambulance pack and is air-conditioned
in order to cool down a firefighter. Spurger Volunteer Fire Department received its first
new 2010 pumper truck from a federal grant and has received two brush trucks through
grants from the Texas Forest Service.
The next time you see a volunteer firefighter in your community, tell them thank you
for their service and how much you appreciate their work.

When I “went off ” to college in
the mid-1950s, I was used to teachers in our 210-student high school
that knew me and
called me by my
first name. (When
they got mad at
me they screeched:
“ W illis Newman WEBB!!!”)
Yeeesh.
By
Attending Sam
Willis Houston
State
Webb University, nee
State Teachers
College in those
days, was like attending a big Houston
high school. There were 1900 students,
900 of them freshmen.
Teachers-lecturers-professors were
known as Mr., Miss or Doctor. The only
place I got “familiar” with a T-L-P was
in journalism where the head of the
department, Dr. Ferol Robinson became
known to me as “Dr. R.” Of course, he
knew his “J”students by their first names.
In most other classes, the T-L-Ps addressed us as Mr. Webb or Miss Hill.
However, I had a woman instructor who
used the formal Mr. or Miss in front of
your name and added the term “honey”
after your name. Her name was Martha
Ann Turner and she was middle aged
and unmarried.
Ms. Turner was in the English department and taught a course in “creative
writing,” which could be credited as
either English or journalism. I chose it
as a journalism course.
In those somewhat puritanical mid-
1950s, one did not hear profanity or
suggestive stories in a classroom, i.e.,
unless you took Ms. Turner’s creative
writing course.While Ms.Turner did not
use profanity, she did allow what were
then considered “liberties” in writing
creatively. The teaching and the writing
were nowhere near the definition of lewd
or “dirty” in today’s society.
Word around campus was that if you
wrote about alcohol, partying and the
like and hinted at sex, you’d receive an “A”
on the paper and perhaps in the course.
The implication was that Ms. Turner
loved implied sex and/or “dirty” stories
and that you’d get a good grade for such
inferences whether it was well written
or grammatically correct.
One thing is certain, however, and that
is that Martha Ann Turner was colorful
to the point of being entertaining. And,
she was a very good teacher in the art of
creative writing.
I thoroughly enjoyed the class and,
since I’d never known anyone like Ms.
Turner, I was enamored of this intriguing instructor.
She was a free spirit and developed
in me a bent for writing creatively. My
strict Baptist upbringing, to that point,
prevented me from succumbing to
suggestive description on writing assignments. Slowly, however, I did begin
to write more “creatively.”
In the second semester in school, I fell
into the fraternity-sorority way of life of
partying and having a good time, often
to the detriment of grades. It also added
some “understanding” to the lifestyles
implied in the desired writing in Ms.
CMYK
Turner’s class.
When Ms.Turner called on you in class,
it was usually issued in this terminology:
“Mr. Webb, Honey, would you please
read your paper.”
So, we clever devil students thought it
was funny to refer to her among ourselves,
as “Martha Ann Turner Honey.”
Loving to dance — and already introduced to the favorite step of the day, the
jitterbug — I leapt into the social swirl.
The places to socialize and dance were
those clubs that served beer and had a
jukebox and, often, a band.
The club of choice for underage imbibers was The Paper Moon in neighboring
Trinity County, which was “wet” compared to then-dry Huntsville and Walker
County.
We soon learned that Martha Ann
Turner Honey and another English
instructor, Charles Adams, were frequenters of “The Moon.”
It was said that if you’d buy Martha
Ann Turner Honey a beer, you were ensured an A in the creative writing course.
I couldn’t bring myself to buy a beer
for a teacher, particularly in order to
improve my grade in the class.
However, I did always ask Martha
Ann Honey to dance. We cut a pretty
mean rug.
My grade?
An A, of course. I had dance lessons
while attending high school.

Varsity Baseball
While school was out last week
for Tyler County schools, the
Colmesneil Bulldog baseball team
was starting their season.The varsity
Bulldogs started their season by
competing in the very competitive
Groveton tournament held February 20–22.
Colmesneil opened the tournament up against Cleveland and
Warren on Thursday.The Bulldogs
who are transitioning from a playoff basketball season into baseball
mode had a tough go the first day
of the tournament dropping their
game against Cleveland 10-5 and
then dropping their second game of
the day against Warren 8-1.
On Friday, the Bulldogs took
on Leon and Latexo. Friday went
much better for the Bulldogs.
Colmesneil opened up the day by
playing a tough Leon team. In a
very tight game, the Bulldogs prevailed 4-3.Reigning District MVP
Dylan Falcon picked up where he
left off last season smacking two
key doubles. Chris Carr picked up
the victory after pitching a solid
game. Matt Bailey came in and
shut the door on Leon to pick up
the save.
The second game of the day
was against Latexo. The Bulldogs
jumped all over the Tigers from
the first pitch as they defeated
Latexo 15-0. The Bulldogs got
an extremely solid pitching effort
from Jake Pattillo as he held the
Latexo bats in check on his way to
pitching the first no-hitter of the
season for the Bulldogs.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs took
on a very talented squad from
Groveton. This game did not
disappoint as neither team could
take complete control of the game.
The Bulldogs fought hard and
came out on top in a dog fight 7-6.
Cody Walsh had two key hits and
scored two runs for Colmesneil.
Tyler Walker took one yard for his
first homerun of the season. Cole
Johnson had a solid outing on his
way to picking up the win. And
Bailey picked up his second save
of the young season by quieting
the Groveton bats to seal the win.
Up next for Colmesneil is the
Evadale Tournament to be held
February 27–March 1.
JV Baseball
The Colmesneil JV baseball team
traveled to Douglass to compete
in the Douglass tournament. The
young Bulldogs fought hard going 1-2 in the tournament. The

The Lady Dogs softball season
is under full swing as well as they
started playing games this past
week. Colmesneil started the season off facing Cushing this past
Tuesday for their home opener.This
was a tight game for the first three
innings as both teams struggled to
get anything going against their opponent’s pitcher.Colmesneil finally
broke through with some key hits,
with Kara Standley leading the way
with a double and single. Merrick
Graham chalked up two singles
during the game also. Standley
was able to keep the Cushing bats
from getting hot as she fanned
eight of their batters for the game.
Colmesneil shut out Cushing 4-0
with Standley getting the win and
the shutout.
The Lady Dogs then traveled
to Jasper to compete in the Jasper
softball tournament February 20
–22. The Lady Dogs continued
their hot play throughout the
tournament as they amassed a 5-1
tournament record to push their
season record to 6-1.
The Lady Dogs opened the tournament by crushing West Hardin
15-0. Colmesneil had their way on
the base paths as several of the Lady
Dogs managed to steal multiple
bases on the Lady Oiler defense.
Treasure Jackson and Magen Allen
both led the way with four stolen
bases apiece. Krista Harris stole
three bases and Kim Knighten
also stole one base.Standley picked
up the win in this game as well.
Colmesneil also defeated Burkeville
by a score of 9-0 on day one of the
tournament.
On Friday, the Lady Dogs took
on a tough Bridge City team and
came up short dropping the game

Arthur Memorial and had another solid outing as they defeated
Memorial 9-2. To finish up the
tournament the Lad Dogs took on
Beaumont Ozen. Allen got the bats
going in this one as she absolutely
crushed a ball over dead centerfield
for a two run homerun, her first on
the season. The Lady Dogs went on
to win the game 7-0.

though they were successful in

six points on the offensive side.
The second quarter, Spurger
then stepped it up, scoring
15 points, thanks to three
pointers from Caleb LeBouef,

both teams were very successful at pushing the ball up the
court, but the points were
not falling as they were for
Oakwood. The tired Pirates,
although they scored 15 points
in both the third and fourth
quarters, could not keep up
with Oakwood. Despite the
loss, the Pirates played a hard
fought match. Sheffield led
the team in points with 15
points, followed by LeBouef
who put up 13. Seniors, Cody
Winkle, Heath Zoch and Michael Reyna all scored as well
for their last game. Winkle put
up seven points, Zoch made

the fourth quarter, and Reyna
hit two free throws. The game

week dedicated to raising awareness about these life-threatening disorders in an effort to save the lives of millions across our country and
across the world. In the United States, as many as 10 million females
and one million males are fighting a life-and-death battle with an eating
disorder, which has one of the highest mortality rates of any mental
illness. Eating disorders are more than just a problem with food or a
desire to lose weight. Food is used to feel in control of other feelings
that may seem overwhelming. www.nationaleatingdisorders.org

We have survived the cold
weather and are looking forward to the spring. We have
had new members join our
painting group and we are so
grateful. As we look at them we
remember how it was when we
first starting painting; we do
speak a different language and
I am sure they will do just fine.
We are excited about the
Dogwood Festival and Western Weekend coming up in
March. We will be setting up
beautiful art work in the Emporium for everyone to view so
please come in for a visit and
maybe you will find something
that you want to take home.
We will be there 9 a.m. – 3
p.m. Saturday the 22nd and
Saturday the 29th. We are
very excited about having this
beautiful space to display our
art and we invite everyone to
come and see the variety of
freshly finished work.
Thought you might like to
know that most all of our
group is not originally from
Woodville. As the saying goes
we got here just as fast as we
could. Some are originally
from Beaumont, Alexandria,
Vidor, Jasper and many other
places. We are connected by art
and you can feel the true heartwarming care and compassion
we have for one another.
A big “thank you” to Lynette
Brice who instructed us in
February. She drives from Call
to assist us with our art; not
only does she have patience,
but a really big heart.
Jean Humphrey will assist
students with the whole range
of artwork in March, which
includes drawing, watercolor,
oils and pastel. Who could ask
for more?
With spring on the way it
is camping time again, and
painting out of doors is what
fuels us as artists. We might
forget food items, or pots and
pans, but we have all the art
supplies that are required for
outdoor painting.
Have a happy spring; we are
going to.

When I say Lou Ann Cloy is the best choice for Tyler County D.A., I know what I am
saying because I have been there and seen her in action.
My name is Garry Mattingly. Elisabeth and I have owned our home here in the
Warren area for forty-two years. Elisabeth taught school for 40 years and retired
from Warren High School.
I have worked in law enforcement since 1963. I started in the Harris County
Sheriff’s Office as a reserve deputy. I was hired by the Atlanta Police Department
in 1966. In 1973, I was at Woodville P.D. as chief, then with Rosenberg as chief. I
was D.A. Jim Clark in 1991 as a Criminal Investigator, and am still certified as a D.A.
Investigator with D.A. Joe Smith. I also served 12 years as Court Bailiff. In addition, I also served four years as the elected constable in Pct. #1.
I am a graduate of Georgia Police Academy, the Atlanta Police Academy, East Texas
Police Academy, and the F.B.I. National Academy at Quantico, Virginia. I also have
a Masters Peace Officers Certification.
I am not looking for anything for myself. I am only expressing my experience in
this area. Elisabeth and I are comfortably retired. We don’t need anything except
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Lou Ann is a graduate of Warren High School and lives in Tyler County.

You don’t see young people being trained in the things of God. Less

parents with a great commitment and determination, making great
sacrifices of both time and money for their children to participate
in extra-curricular activities, especially sports. And the results of this
misplaced effort have been devastating to the church and, ultimately,

when he is old he will not depart from it.”
To “train up” means to seriously invest the love, nurturing, and discipline needed for your child to become fully committed to God, our
Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. It also means to train your
child to avoid whatever natural tendencies he might have that would
prevent total commitment to God. Go for the gold!

At Our Lady of the Pines
Here is a great outing for Sunday, March 9.
When the preacher finally lets you go to lunch, join us for an excellent meal of all-you-can-eat chicken and sausage gumbo (made by a
traditional crew, famous for their gumbo). Of course, it includes all
the fixings: rice, potato salad and crackers. There will also be a selection of desserts and drinks available.
By your support, the Gumbo Dinner event has become much more
than a fund raiser; it has become a hallmark of the church’s events
each year.
This year all our funds will go to a very important electrical safety
upgrade for the church buildings. Join us Sunday from 11:30 a.m. until
1:30 p.m. at Our Lady of the Pines Family Center on Eagle Drive.
Tickets are on sale at the door: Adults $7.50, and Children $4.

We at First Assembly of God in Colmesneil have realized we have missed the mark in ministering to our community. We know there
are many in our community who cannot go to church because they may be lonely or sick. That is why we have started a “Home Bound
Ministry” - to go where they are and to minister to them, bringing hope for the hopeless and the good news that they are not alone.
If you know anyone who would like a visit by a “Home Bound Ministry” team, we have three teams to serve you. You don’t have to
be Assembly of God, and we will never ask you to join our church. We are here to serve you and to make Christ known to you in word
and in deed.
For ministry by one of the teams, call one of these team leaders: Charles and Faye Riley, 409-837-2008; Frances Lewis, 409-377-0386;

The Preacher
Favoritism
Says...
by Pastor Ken DeRouen
James 2:1-7 My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord
Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. 2 Suppose a man comes into
your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man
in filthy old clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention to
the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but
say to the poor man, “ You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,”
4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges
with evil thoughts?
5 Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who
are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the
kingdom he promised those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored
the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the
ones who are dragging you into court? 7 Are they not the ones who
are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?
James makes it clear whom he is addressing: brothers and sisters believers - who are to live a standard of the Christian life that has a
definite pattern of behavior. James is addressing their conscience to
check themselves; so should we. We are to recognize our brotherhood, or else feel his disqualification from that identification. Real
Christians are real brothers and sisters and for the reason that they
are really saved by the real free grace of God in Jesus Christ.
James tells us those who will not love all God’s children cannot
be truly loving their savior. We are not to show favoritism among
the believers. God does not make judgement on the basis of criteria that are external and superficial. Those criteria are unfair and
consistently misleading. Just because someone has power or money
does not mean they will give more or do more for the Kingdom
than anyone else. Only by faith in Him have we any real riches.
James tells us that God chooses the poor. I believe that most would
agree that in our churches that the bulk would be considered poor
in the eyes of the world. The average church today only consists
of just seventy-six men, women and children. So, to despise them
would be to despise God’s love for them. Jesus prayed for unity of
the church on the eve of His death on the cross.

I have to work with people all of the time who are messed
up. Some of them are incarcerated and some are not. Some
of them suffer from some substance abuse and some do not.
Many of them have a problem with self-centeredness. A lot
of them even attend some church.
The late Ralph Waite said, “A self-centered, selfish life is
not worth living.” In case you don’t know, Mr. Waite played
John Walton in the Waltons television series.
I thought it significant that a statement like Mr. Waite’s
would come from someone who was so successful in Hollywood.
What he said was truth.
And you know what? There are a lot of self centered, selfish people in our world! In every walk of life there are those
who don’t care what the Bible says. They don’t care what God
thinks, and the idea of church is just plain old fashioned! And
sadly, there are people who claim to know God’s word who
don’t tell the truth, either.
Consider Matthew 16:24 says: Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you want to be my follower, you must turn

A life-long Republican who has

DOUG CENTILLI.
TEXAS ROOTS. wAShINGTON SAvvy.
w
ashington, DC can be a terrible place. It’s no place for amateurs.
And we’ve sure found out it’s no place to learn on the job. That’s
why it’s so important that East Texas send Doug Centilli to Congress.
Doug’s a Texas boy, Aggie football player, son a Texas high School
teacher and football coach, grandson of a member of the Texas Border
Patrol. his roots run deep, his Texas values run deeper.
Centilli believes fiercely in the second amendment, the right to life, and
traditional marriage. And he believes fiercely that Obamacare needs to
be stopped dead, that our Government needs to be brought under control,
our taxes lowered and jobs brought back to East Texas. he believes these
things passionately, more importantly, he knows how to do something
about them…and has already been working hard for the hard working
people of District 36!
As Chief of Staff for Representative Kevin Brady, even
though District 36 wasn’t his district, Doug Centilli…
• worked tirelessly on recovery efforts from hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Ike,
fighting red tape and the federal bureaucracy to help deliver millions of dollars in aid to people in District 36.
• Is a driving force and architect in the effort to move U.S. Army
Command Africa to Ellington Field, bringing 5,000 jobs and millions of dollars to the District 36 economy.
• has worked behind the scenes to help float the Battleship USS Texas, a important symbol of Texas patriotism
and a key tourism attraction for District 36.
Doug Centilli has already done good work for
East Texas. Now let’s put him to work full time!
DOUG CENTILLI wANTS TO GET ThE U.S BACK ON TRACK.
East Texas needs someone in Congress who knows how to get things done. Doug Centilli knows the ropes,
he has the contacts, and the respect of people in washington, to be a doer, not a talker. he’s already written key
legislation to help take control of the value of our money from the elites in washington and put it in the hands
of the people. his Sound Dollar Act “…could be one of the greatest pieces o legislation in history” according to
Larry Kudlow of The Kudlow Report. he led the way with the chart that showed Congress just what was wrong
with Obamacare. And his MAP Economic Plan has won praise for how it would reduce Federal spending and save
America from fiscal crisis.
It’s not his first rodeo…
washington may be broken, but Doug Centilli knows how to make it work for the people of District 36.

Warren Babin – Country Cajun Poet
On the tailgate of Warren
Babin’s old pickup, in all caps
about an inch tall, one reads
“CAJUN POET.” And so he
is - a bit cautious at first - but
once the introductions are over
he and Mary, his wife of 38
years, welcome you a like longlost relative.
Relishing their roots, Mary
teases you in her Cajun French.
Past two dogs and some,
entering the door of their
humble abode in Colmesneil,
we find our way to a small
bedroom museum of sorts
where Warren’s treasure of
several hundred LPs resides
on shelves and in boxes in no
particular order. Among the
stacks of full-size LPs are rows
of a few hundred 45s, 78s and
some 8-track tapes. They love
music, especially Cajun music.
Warren has been collecting
since high school, almost 50
years now.
Today, Warren is 65 and
looks and sounds a bit like
Willie Nelson, a raspy voice,
with shoulder-length graying hair. Cajun country to the
bone. Only his smile is wider,
and dare we say, more genuine than Nelson’s. Warren is an
easy throwback to the ‘60s and
‘70s, the photo of him taken

Training hangs on the wall,
dated 1968.
A great source of pride is
the musical score he wrote
years ago titled “In the Back
of My Mind.”
He has dabbled in art. In
1974, Warren completed a
large painting, “The Burning Bush,” with stamp-pad
ink prints and wire. It was
hung in the Holy Order of
Mans chapel in Sacramento,
Ca., established in 1968 and
disbanded in 1985 (HolyOrderOfMans.org).
Amidst their home tour,
Warren and Mary interject
snippets of their life and love,
a journey not easy or forgotten. Their love for their family
and friends has never flagged.
They have a son and daughter, Bronson and Marie, and
two step-daughters, Penny and
Tammy.
Mary told how much her
son loved her gumbo, how
he would leave work to come
home for lunch just for her
gumbo. Clear as sunlight –
the famously homespun love
of the Cajun family circle and
the uniquely spiced food lit
this home.
Both Warren and Mary
delight in sharing his record
collection. The impressive
eclectic variety includes Marty
Robbins’ “Gunfighter Ballads,” Bobby Darin’s “Sermon
of Samson,” Elvis Presley’s
“Devil in Disguise,” Fats
Domino’s “Blueberry Hill,”
an RCA 45 of “Gunsmoke,”
Johnny Cash’s “Luther Played
the Boogie,” a Time-Life collection of Bach, a Readers
Digest collection “Take Me

Presley’s “Christmas Album,”
the Everly Brothers featuring their hit “Wake Up Little
Suzie,” the Best of Merle Haggard, Johnny Mathis’ “Merry
Christmas,” and the Mahler
Symphony #5.
Oh, look there! Warren
has the original LP of Hank
Williams’ classic “Jambalaya,”
and – catch this – a Victor
recording of “Jambalaya” in
Japanese. Can you imagine
that song sung in Japanese?
Anyway, Hank Williams and
his Drifting Cowboys published “Jambalaya (On The
Bayou)” in 1952, just one year
before the young Williams
died at 29.
You might remember a few
of the lyrics of Jambalaya,
“Goodbye Joe, me gotta go
… My Yvonne, the sweetest
one, me oh my oh … Son of a
gun, we’ll have big fun on the
bayou.” The song is not unlike
these two Cajuns. Among their
fond stories was how Warren
played the scrub board with
spoons in Houma, La., at the
Jolly Inn … a long time ago.
Yet, he can still scrub a tune.
Some cherished LPs are
from the genuine Cajun musicians. Mary chimed in with
her accented Cajun-English, “I

Cajuns out, and my blues….
A lot of them Cajun music,
I don’t get rid of, no.” They
seem to convey feeling in every word.
Mary’s favorite is “Story
of My Life: A Real Cajun at
Heart,” by her brother-in-law,
Richard Naquin (pronounced
“nah-keen”).
“I love my Cajun music,”
Mary said.
Jimmy C. Newman’s “Cajun
and Country” is a favorite, for
Jimmy and Warren are friends.
Sammy Naquin and Waylon Thibodeaux’s “Jong A Moi
or Spicy Cajun Music” (1978)
is extra special, being that
Sammy is Mary’s nephew who
played the accordion, an instrument that helped to define
a lot of Cajun music after the
fiddle. This particular album is
very rare, being self-produced,
according to Wikipedia.
L ong fellow published
“Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie”
in 1847, an epic poem of fiction
often compared to Homer’s Iliad. It tells the story of a lady’s
love for a Blacksmith’s son and
the expulsion her people from
Acadia by the French, mostly
from the Provence of Quebec. The French conquest in
1710 dispersed the Acadians
for the next 40 years until the
Treaty of Paris in 1763. Joseph
Broussard led the first group
of 200 Acadians to Louisiana
in 1765, and thus began the
rich distinctive culture of the
Cajuns. Some credit Longfellow’s poem for helping make
the history famous, “Evangeline” becoming the poet’s most
famous work. Yet the Cajuns’
resilient spirit in the Louisiana
“bayou” helped forge a unique
ethnic culture now recognized
worldwide.
Most fitting here, part of
the Cajun legend and lore has
to do with loss and love, in
song and poetry, and that is
true for Warren and Mary, too.
Warren wrote “Crayons on
the Wall,” a short poem about
lost love and his confidence
that he will be okay, if “I don’t
break down today.” It was published in the World Poetry
Anthology by John Campbell
in 1987.
In 1999, he wrote “Friends,”
a rather somber ode to the acceptance of loss with the hope
that “we can still be friends.”
Warren and Mary are survivors.
In 2006, he wrote “Little
Crawfish,” a tragedy about
a crawfish’s last day before
becoming Cajun gumbo. Furthermore, inspired by a wire
crawfish in Amy Bythewood’s
legal office, he crafted a wire
crawfish for his living room
wall.
Warren showed us his Bible
and lamented mildly that not
everyone believes, saying in his
accented Cajun, “I don’t know
if they understand … whatever it says, that’s what it is.”
Good point, and from someone who knows about struggle
and survival – real clarity from
Colmesneil’s own Country Cajun Poet.

VOTE REPUBLICAN
Here are the facts:
•Unlike my opponent, I actually live in Tyler County 100% of the
time.
•Unlike my opponent, my win record for jury trials is not 10% but
88%.
•Unlike my opponent, I have never lost a case against a defendant
who has already given a written confession.
•Unlike my opponent, I have not inflated my record regarding the
total number of jury trials that I have prosecuted.
•Unlike my opponent, I am on call 24 hours a day, seven days a
week and work late many nights and on weekends.
•Unlike my opponent, I am regularly contacted by law enforcement
after hours and on weekends for assistance.
•Unlike my opponent, I have won more than two jury trials in the
last three years.
•Unlike my opponent, I am endorsed by real citizens who live in
Tyler County.
But don’t take my word for it, all of the above trial information
can be verified by the Tyler County District and County Clerk and
the Johnson County District and County Clerk.
