Robert Tomasello
1937 - 2016
Bob Tomasello of San Jose passed away on Saturday, February
27 after a lengthy illness. He was 78 years old. He is survived by his
wife Lynda, two daughters, a son and numerous grandchildren and
great grandchildren.
Before retiring, he earned his living in construction, owning his
own metal frame and sheetrock business.
Bob was the consummate bocce player of twenty plus years,
who traveled to many tournaments in years past. In recent years, he
concentrated on bocce at Campo di Bocce in Los Gatos, captaining his
Wednesday Night League team, Quattro Montoni, winning four league
championships, and leading the Tuesday Morning Senior League. A
competitive player, he kept his bocce skills honed on a small court in
his back yard. In addition, Bob enjoyed playing Bridge after bocce.
A USBF National Champions competitor, Bob won a Bronze
Medal in Open B in 2004, Bronze Medals in Open B and Raffa B in
2007 and a Gold Medal in Open B in 2009. In 2012, Bob’s team won a
Gold Medal in the California State Senior Games Championships.
Bob, who was quick to flash an engaging smile, will be truly
missed in our bocce community.

HERE’S HOW I SEE IT
Is It Time To Re-think The
Tournament Schedule?
By Dario Bernardi
President, USBF Western
Ciao tuttiThere is a growing concern/problem in the
tournaments that we have been accustomed to
over the past several years. Many of them are just
not filling up anymore. A couple of weeks ago, former President Vern Cooper sent a scathing email
to a group of people in the WS, including myself,
ripping everyone because as of the email date, only 1 team had signed up for the Western Sector
Open Championship coming up on March 5th.
While many of the things that Vern said where justified, my response was…what can we do about
it?? This is a very familiar ring in the Western Sector, where we just do not have enough new players
interested in playing, OR the same teams basically
go to all of the tournaments, OR teams do not want
to go and get the stuffing beat out of them.
I have talked with a few people about this. I
wanted to throw something out there and see what
the responses were. Im thinking maybe we should
consider going to 1 tournament a month?? Also,
we could increase the entry fee a little bit and we
could play for bigger prize pools?? One of the issues is, along with all of our listed tournaments,
there are always the out of town tournaments as
well. And those can be pretty expensive when all is
said and done. We now have the Vegas date in the
beginning of April, The Nationals are always in
June, and of course The Peppermill tournament in
November.
Most everyone is in a league somewhere,
many people play in more than 1 league. That’s a
lot of bocce!!
I really enjoy the tournaments I get to play in,
especially the raffa tournaments, but it is a commitment if you want to be competitive in any tournament. I’ve stated before that the bocce is only part
of the fun. Seeing people you normally don’t get to
see is a huge reason why I enjoy playing. Of
course, the competition is always fun.
I hope there is an answer out there somewhere. I know a lot of people, like Vern put in a lot
of time and effort to get these things going and to
make sure they run smoothly. I hope everyone
considers getting into a tournament soon.
On a sad note, Bob Tomasello passed away
a few days ago. Speaking of tournaments, Bob
was one of the best open bocce players around.
He was also a fierce competitor as well. Whenever
my team saw the name ‘The Montoni’s’ in any tournament bracket, we knew we were in for a tough
tough battle. Bob was in the trades, as I was and
he was a good man. He will be missed. Our
thoughts to his Wife and Family.

News For USBF Western Sector Membership
Northwest Report
By Larry Cereghino
Not a lot going on in the Northwest yet as it
continues to rain and very few places to play indoors. The Auburn Bocce Club will be playing their
annual Washington State indoor championship at
Les Grove Park in the gym on carpet on March
12th. The Paesanos are planning their Tepid Pole
tournament to be held in sometime in April and 24
players from the Northwest are trying to get some
rolling in for the shootout against a like number of
players from California in the West Coast Shootout
to held May 13, 14 and 15 at the IAC in Stockton.
Because of the new membership rules that
went into place this year the Northwest will see a
rise in USBF memberships. Portland Bocce
League has already surpassed previous year totals
already and new regulations at the Paesano Bocce
Club will require all members to be associated with
the USBF.
There are at least three teams from the NW
that have indicated they will be playing in the
“open” rules National Tournament in Livermore.
Everyone playing in the “Shootout” at the IAC and
the “Nationals” in Livermore are keeping their fingers crossed for good weather when they head
south as we have had record rain for three months
and are looking forward to some warm, sunny
weather.
2 INCH USBF PATCHES AVAILABLE SOON
As per standard uniform requirements, the small 2 inch USBF patch is required
on the left shoulder on team uniforms for those who enter the USBF National
Championships starting on June 25, 2016. An order for those patches has
been placed and will arrive shortly. Unfortunately, the company from whom we
purchase them has raised the price per patch. As a result, so must we. The
cost of the patches is now $2.00 each.
If you would like to order patches for the USBF National Championships,
please contact Western Sector Representative Larry Cereghino at:

Pensieri e Riflessioni
Thoughts and Reflections by Frank Rivera
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
The Maureen Albanese Valentines Day Tournament, held on February 13th is always a lot of
fun. The atmosphere is special. Although it’s a rule
that there must be two men and two women on
each team, it isn’t a rule that the teams be made up
of husbands and wives, although a lot of teams are
made up that way: very apropos for this tournament. And so it was with our team.
What made it even more special for Cynthia
and me was that we teamed up with friends, Dennis
Smith and Connie Hong-Smith, who are new to
bocce. After practicing once a week for about a
month, they played with us in their first tournament.
Who knew we would win two out of three of our
games? Icing on the cake!
months edition is as big or bigger than past issues,
with the last 10 pages making up the Coming Tournaments section with more tournament applications
than usual. This counts for part of this issue’s size. I
did make the effort. You will see that there are less
pictures in this issue, with the pictures a little larger
in size. I think that fewer pictures crammed onto
each page makes it a little more visually enjoyable
to look at. I won’t be able to show as many players
in each tournament that I’ve done in the past, but
between tournaments, I’ll try to show as many different people as I can.
NELLA CONTI LOSES HER WHEELS
I took some nice pictures of some of the players from the San Francisco Peninsula clubs; PIASC
in San Mateo and IACC of South San Francisco at
the Maureen Albanese Tournament. Some of them
are in this issue.
Nella Conti was there, but because she was
wheelchair bound at the time, she wasn’t able to
play with her team EZ Rollers. So her husband
Mario and teammates Egisto and Mary Fanti played
with Joan Daly in Nella’s place.
Recently I received good news from Nella
that she no longer has to use the wheelchair. She
can start to put some weight on the leg, and hopes
to be back on the courts in April or May. We’re looking forward to seeing you roll again, Nella.

NEW PHOTOGRAPHER?
I want to thank Dick Gomez for taking the picture above of team Mezzanotte Luna. I should’ve
tagged him to take more pictures earlier in the day.
The great thing about playing in an eight
court venue like Campo di Bocce is that there’s no
wait time or byes. We went from one game to another with almost no resting between games. Not
enough time for me to wander around taking pictures. Come to think of it, Dick didn’t have any more
time to take pictures for me than I did. So thanks for
this one picture, Dick. Much appreciated.

I said in last months newsletter that I will
pare back on the newsletter, only to find that this

AROUND THE sector
COMING SOON !
CAMPO DI BOCCE OF FREMONT
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
KAREN AND CHUCK
Doesn’t look like much now, but soon there
will be a third Campo di Bocce venue; this one in
Fremont California. Like the venues in Los Gatos
and Livermore, the Fremont location will have eight
courts; four indoor and four outdoor courts. Mike
Grasser of Da Vinci Bocce in Sylvan Lake, Michigan will install the courts as soon as the asphalt
underlayment is finished.
What better way to celebrate your birthday
than with someone who has the same birthday
as you? Karen Corlett and Chuck Loney, both
born on February 19th, took a little trip to Mexico
to celebrate. They spent a few days outside
Puerto Vallarta at The Riu Palace.
Due to space limitations, the courts will not
be as big as the other two locations. The outside
courts will be 9 feet wide and 75 feet long. The inside courts will be a little bigger: 9 1/2 feet wide by
80 feet long. We’re looking forward to rolling our
first ball down the newest world class courts in
Northern California: Campo di Bocce of Fremont.
YOU CAN’T SAY WE DIDN’T TRY
Two years ago the Monterey Bocce Federation asked Cal State Parks if they could resurface the bocce courts at the Custom House Plaza with state of the art surfaces, after which they
would return stewardship of the courts back to
State Parks. They said no, saying they will do it
themselves at state expense right after the new
fiscal year. Two years later we’re still stuck with
the same dirt courts, rotting wood sidewalls and
rotting carpet backboards. And weeds. (sigh!)

THE TWENTIETH ANNUAL
Maureen Albanese Valentines Day Bocce Tournament
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2016
CAMPO DI BOCCE OF LOS GATOS
By Jennifer Albanese Musolf and Ben Musolf
REPRINTED FROM THE MARCH 2013 EDITION OF THE USBF WESTERN SECTOR NEWSLETTER
Twenty years ago, Campo di Bocce became a
reality. Twenty years ago, Maureen Albanese wanted
a Bocce tournament that would resemble the fun of
the sport and game we all know and love; and that is
exactly what she received.
In 1995, the Albanese family took a family vacation to Italy, to go see the roots of the family clan. The
area visited was Campobasso, in the central Italian
region, about an hour east of Rome. Upon arrival, they
found the Comunale Bocciodromo, and the rest is history.
The locals took to Tom and the Albanese girls
right away, and gave them the royal treatment, even
though women and children were not allowed (per the
sign on the entrance). Once the “Joy of Bocce” was
over in Campobasso, it was time for the Albanese
family to return to the New World. On the plane ride
home, Maureen looked at Tommy, and said, “Why
don’t you open a Bocce Club?” Since Tom had been
a member of the Los Gatos Bocce Club (LGBC) for
many years prior to his pilgrimage to Campobasso, his
mind and entrepreneurial self had a vision. The next
thing you know, Tom was pitching his CRAZY idea of
opening a Bocce club to his buddies in Los Gatos,
cause they needed a place to unwind on a Friday afternoon with a glass of Chianti and some salamI!
“Sure” they said to him, “we’ll give you a few bucks to
open it up, but WHEN, not if it fails, we will have a
place to park our cars!” Well, those cars are still
parked in their garages!
Campo di Bocce was an old lumber yard that
became an eyesore in the heart of Los Gatos. Over
Jennifer Albanese Musolf
many glasses of gin, and lots of stories reminiscing of
the good ole’ days, a cash deal was made, and the
ground was broken. If not for the trip to the Homeland,
The Los Gatos Bocce Club, and a little nudge form
Maureen, Campo di Bocce would still be a broken
down, full of saw dust abandoned lumber yard!
Campo di Bocce of Los Gatos opened its doors
on February 8, 1997. Immediately after opening,
Maureen insisted that there be a Valentine’s Day Bocce tournament. The format had to be a couples tournament, two men, and two women. Maureen partnered with Micheal Nicosia, Michael DelMonico
(deceased LGBC member), and Joan Bertolotti for the
inaugural event. Being the odd Irish woman, Maureen
felt obligated to surround herself with a lot of vowels!
Well low and behold, Maureen won the inaugural
event, and of course the fix was in!
The tournament was inevitably a huge success.
It immediately became the most popular Bocce tournament in the Western Sector. It still sells out yearly in
just a matter of days. It has become the anniversary
celebration of Campo di Bocce; And is now named
after Maureen. The Campo di Bocce Valentine’s Day
Bocce Tournament became the Maureen Albanese
Valentine’s Day Bocce Tournament in 2005, after
Maureen lost her battle with cancer.
If not for all of the continued support of Maureen
and Campo di Bocce of Los Gatos, who knows where
the sport we all know and love would be today. And
most importantly, thank you to the Los Gatos Bocce
Club for allowing Tom and Maureen to fall in love
again, over a crazy game called Bocce!

There was more than Super
Bowl going on the first weekend in
February. Teams from Concord,
Pittsburg, San Jose, San Rafael
and Livermore descended onto the
courts at Campo di Bocce of Livermore to compete in the second
Dash for Cash Satellite Tournament. The winning team was Let’s
Roll (Concord), the second place
team was B Street Boys (San Rafael), the third place team was RollEm Pirates (Pittsburg) and Ricellanza Club of Livermore placed
fourth. Rounding out the field were
the DeBocceri team from San Jose
and Livermore teams Girls Got
Balls, The Henhouse, and the Italian Brothers.
There were many hard
fought battles and narrow wins.
Players enjoyed a nice lunch with
plenty of wine followed by delicious
desserts. During the lunch break
players looked on as Punto Raffa
Volo players demonstrated shooting techniques. Some of the Dash
for Cash players got a few tips on
shooting techniques and showed
interest in learning the PRV international rules game.
At the end of the day players
and captains expressed what a
great time they had and most are
already planning to return for another event.

Once again teams from around the Bay Area
came to play in the Dash for Cash Satellite tournament at Campo di Bocce of Livermore. Teams
from Concord, Pittsburg, San Jose and Livermore
competed in some knockdown, drag out and come
from behind events. The games were competitive
with five teams participating in a single round robin.
Half way through the event it looked like a 4-way tie
for first place might occur, in which case the final
rankings would have been determined using the
United States Bocce Federation (USBF) tiebreaker
system. It was fun and exciting and turned out the
last round of games determined the rankings for
second through fourth place.
First place went to Let’s Roll (Concord) who
came back from a first round loss to win. Second
place went to Italian Brothers (Livermore) with
Bankers and Rollers (Pittsburg) and DeBocceri
(San Jose) taking third and fourth place. Erin Go
Bocce of the Livermore winery league made a gallant run at fourth place but DeBocceri took it in a
come from behind win.
Players enjoyed a fantastic lunch with plenty
of Mimosa’s and Bloody Mary’s being served.
Once again players said how much they enjoyed
the day and plan to return again.

THE DASH FOR CASH
The purpose of the Dash for Cash Satellite Tournaments is to introduce newer bocce players to
the world of tournament competition. Whether or not they are already USBF members, the tournaments
are designed more for the newer players with little to no tournament experience. Participation in the
tournaments brings with them a year’s membership in the USBF so that all participants can continue
their tournament experience by playing in any of the tournaments on the USBF 2016 Tournament
Schedule. This includes getting their feet wet in USBF National Championship competition, where they
might try entering the B Open Tournament.

POLICY FOR INCLUSION OF NON-USBF MEMBER
TOURNAMENT APPLICATIONS
The policy of the Western Sector Newsletter is that we will gladly list non-USBF sanctioned tournaments on
our Upcoming Tournaments section and display applications for those tournaments hosted by non-USBF
member clubs as long as the date of those non-member tournaments do not conflict with a date on which a
USBF sanctioned tournament will be held.
Even if a non-USBF member club tournament is not promoted in our Upcoming Tournaments section due to
this conflict, we will gladly post photos of those tournaments in the next issue of this newsletter immediately
following the month in which the tournament took place.
If you wish to have your tournament represented in this newsletter, please make every effort to provide us
with the winners photos with the names of the winners from left to right as they appear in the photo. Please
feel free to provide as many photos as you wish of your tournament during play. The newsletter editor will
determine how many photos to use based on available space in the newsletter. If you wish to provide written
commentary, please make that commentary no longer than 300 words, or approximately 1/2 page, using the
