JUNE 2014
A “pride”
is a
close-knit family of lions, as can be found in
the savannahs of central Africa. Each member of the pride has responsibilities. Whether
they are the hunters, protectors, caregivers,
teachers, or learners, they work as a team, for
survival and prosperity. If even one member
of the pride does not fulfill its role, it can
affect the entire group.
There is another group of Lions just
as proud. But unlike the lions of Africa,
these Lions aren’t feared. Instead they
are admired and respected. They, too, form
a ring of protection, and they have shown
themselves to be skilled hunters providing
food for the hungry and tending to the needs
of a different flock. Their territory has spread
to every corner of the world and they bring
goodness wherever they exist. It’s us – the 1.35
million members of Lions Clubs International.
The English dictionary provides another
definition of the word “Pride” a feeling of
happiness that you get when you or someone
you know does something good. It is not
the pride of being boastful it is the pride of
accomplishment in building communities, doing good, and reaching
out to assist others.
THE ONLY ALL CANADIAN DISTRICT IN 5M
Lions are indeed a proud organization.
There is a feeling of pride shared among our
members, knowing that our commitment to
serve the needs of others is what has made
us, and keeps us, the global leader in humanitarian service. It is the same pride that has
sustained us for 97 years.
We can “Strengthen the Pride” by bringing the full Lion’s family closer together,
working in a spirit of cooperation and understanding, with each Lion member doing their
share. And we can “Strengthen the Pride”
through our many meaningful accomplishments. This is the platform for not only success this year, but through our centennial and
well into the next hundred years.
PRESIDENT
JOE PRESTON
This year, I want to focus on
strengthening our clubs, our service
and our association. To do this, I’ll
be sharing valuable information
and resources with Lions leaders
and members throughout the year. I
am asking for your help in working
closely with your members. Together, we can strengthen the pride!
Lions are international leaders
in humanitarian service because
of clubs like yours and leaders like
you. A club with strong leaders and
engaged members can make a real
difference in the community.
DISTRICT GOVERNOER
OMER CHAMPIGNY
Lions are already responding to the
“Ask One”
campaign and clubs around
the world are encouraging members to ask one friend, one
neighbor or one family member to join their club! The concept is
simple, and Ask One could make a big difference in your membership efforts.
There’s nothing like the feeling of serving those in need, so
let’s pass it on. In September, I’d
like you to help inspire the next
generation of Lions by engaging
our youth in service.
Consider promoting LCI
youth programs, starting a Leo
Club or partnering with a local school on a literacy project. Better
yet—get young people involved in planning a project so they can
learn and serve with you.
The Centennial Service Challenge encourages
Lions around the world to serve 100 million people by
December 2017. Every club can play a part in reaching our goal. Here’s how you can join the Centennial Service Challenge:
Here’s how you can join the Centennial Service Challenge:
Host service projects throughout the year that impact
Youth, Vision, Hunger or the Environment.
Report your service activities through the Service Activity Report on MyLCI.
Earn a Centennial Banner Patch with a progressive
gemstone design for each year your club participates.
As Lions, we know that a single act of service can change a
life. But when 1.35 million members come together to serve, we
can change the world.
When we engage our youth, we can earn special recognition
in the centennial service challenge. In the coming months, be a
role model. Be a mentor. Be a Lion!
Thanks to all Lions for all that you do.

5M13 MANITOBA LION
PCC Lion Miles Phillips dies at 84
L
ions International has lost one of its’
well known advocators.
Past Council Chairman Lion Miles
Phillips and former longtime editor and
publisher of the Boissevain Recorder,
and The Manitoba Lion, died August 2,
2014 at the Boissevain Hospital after a
short battle with bone cancer. He was 84.
Lion Miles was an outstanding
member of the Boissevain Lions Club
since February 15, 1957 when the club
was chartered. During that time he had
served on countless committees and
offices, including director, secretary and
president.
In addition, Lion Miles has served
at the district level as Zone chair (1961),
Vice District Governor 5M3 (1962) and
District Governor 5M3 (1964). During
his term as DG he visited all of the 66
clubs in the 5M3 District in Manitoba,
NW Ontario and NW Minnesota.
In 1965 Lion Miles served as Council
Chair for MD5.
Lion Miles was presented with a
Life Membership in 1977. He received
numerous attendance awards, Governor’s Awards, Melvin Jones Award and
International President’s Award. He has
personally sponsored in excess of 15
members.
But probably his greatest contribution to Lionism was his personal public
relations with everyone he met, everyone
loved Miles. His personal ambassadorship was priceless and unmeasureable.
Lionism was always a high priority in
Mile’s life. He epitomizes the QUALITY
Lion.

T
his is to inform each of you that
I have agreed to Chair the Lions
ClubsInternational Foundation (LCIF)
committee for this coming year. PDG
Harvey Kingdon has represented LCIF
in our District for many, many years and
we all need to thank him for the excellent
job that he has done. I know I will be
turning to him for advice through out
the year.
My goals for the year include the
following:
To visit at least 6 – 10 clubs through
the year, so if any club wishes me to
come to talk about LCIF please don’t
hesitate to call me or I may just show up
at a meeting.
I would like to increase our Clubs
participation in LCIF by 6 – 15%, 33
Clubs participated last year.
I do plan on having 3 – 5 articles in
the Manitoba Lion during the year.
I will have available an update
for each Club on their Melvin Jones
Fellowship (MJF) recognition credits.
Please contact me if you want an
update.
Our District Club donations for
2013-2014 was $15,365.84. I would like
to see this increased to $17,000.
I would like to set a goal of $2000
towards the One Shot, One Life Measles
Initiative. Any child that is affected can
have severe consequences.
The recent earthquake in China
affected many thousands of people with
an estimated 600 lives lost and more
than 25,000 homes lost.

In June, flyers promoting
Lionism were inserted in the
“Westman Journal” and from all
reports it was rather exciting to
open the paper to see the smiling
faces of our District Lions. The
remainder of the flyers will be
placed in selected community
newspapers in our District
There are extra copies of the “Manitoba
Lion” available to Lions clubs each month
on a first come, first serve basis for use in
your community. You may wish to deliver
them door-to door or perhaps, do a bulk
mailing. How you use them is your choice,

Lions Clubs International
Public Relations Matching Grant 2013 – 2014
District 5M13
District 5M13 initially applied
for a LCI Public Relations Grant
on September 14, 2013 and then,
because that application went
astray, reapplied on January 19,
2014. Approval for the grant
of $1750US was received on
February 14, 2014.
The Public Relations
Matching Grant was used to
publicize and promote Lions
District 5M13 in the following
ways:
1.The District Public Relations
Chair designed and produced
a Lions District 5M13 double
fold, full-colour brochure. 7500
brochures were printed for
distribution to District Lions
Clubs as an information tool for
prospective members, community
events, etc. They will also be used
by the district Governor and
Cabinet for P.R. purposes.
2. Extra copies of the District
5M13 newspaper, “Manitoba
Lion” were used as inserts in
a community newspaper for
publicity purposes.
3. It was decided that more
people could be reached if a
one-page flyer was produced
to be inserted in community
newspapers in selected areas of
the District. As a result 30,000
full-colour flyers were printed.
To date, 15,700 flyers have been
inserted in the Brandon Wheat
City Journal which covers the
city of Brandon and surrounding
area. The remainder of the flyers
will be used as inserts in other
community newspapers early in
the fall when the clubs are back
meeting regularly and more
active.
Both the brochure and flyers
have been very well received
by Lions and the general public
because they are bright, clear
and readable. The fact that local
District Lions are featured makes
the publications even more
attractive.
Potential numbers of people reached:

ttention rodeo fans!!! The
2014 Bowsman Bull-A-Rama Rough Stock Rodeo will be
held on Saturday, October 4th
and this year we will have an
exciting new event being held in
conjunction with Bull-A-Rama,
the hosting of the Sask Buckin
Group’s Finals.
The SBG is promoting
the saddlebronc and bareback
horse riding events to younger
riders and this year the top
three riders in each event will
be riding in Bowsman. Come
and see the future champions in
the sport of rodeo makin’ eight,
just like past Bowsman Bull-ARama competitors who are now
PBR bull riders, Tanner Byrne
and Zane Lambert. Tanner was
fifteen years old when he came
to ride in Bowsman and said
that Bull-A-Rama was the first
event he ever rode in.
We will also have top riders
from the Canadian Cowboy
Association competing in the
saddlebronc, bareback, and
bullriding events for a spot in
the CCA Finals Rodeo. Due
to popular demand, the Wild
Horse Race will be returning
as well. Emery Erickson will be
the announcer and Prime Time
Rodeos will be providing the
stock.
Get here early and take
a wagon ride to the Bowsman Curling Rink to enjoy
a steak and live music at the
Old Western Family BBQ and
Saloon on Saturday afternoon
before the Rodeo starts. Kids
accompanied by a paid adult
get a free hot dog and drink.
Music will be provided by the
Ken Thompson Band. There are
also rumours that the wanted
outlaw “Bad Bart”, who was
captured after the “shoot out”
at last year’s BBQ, is looking for
revenge after his escape from
the gallows.
Starting at 9pm there will
be an all ages dance back at the
Curling Rink. Free camping is
available again, so bring your
campers and tents if you want
to stay the night.
2 FREE TRIPLE PACK
TICKETS will be given out on
the 2014 Bowsman Bull-A-Rama Rough Stock Rodeo Facebook Event page.
A Triple Pac ticket will get
you into the BBQ, rodeo, and
dance. Join as a guest and to
see who is going to be eligible.
Don’t forget to invite your family and friends. Winners will
be decided a week before on

Boissevain Lions pays homage to Tommy’s 40 years
Most of us would kill to look
better at 40 than we did a few days
earlier, but this was possible for Boissevain’s icon just before his big day.
Brandon artist Anne Boychuk
was able to finish putting a fresh coat
on Tommy Turtle in time for his 40th
birthday bash on July 18. Although
just a few weeks before he looked
more like a polar bear than a western
painted turtle, he was fully decked out
in fresh colours looking like the important mascot he has been for many
decades.
The Boissevain Lions Club organized Tommy’s celebration.
The party started wth a photo
with Tommy. The fun continued
downtown with a BBQ lunch served
by the Lions, followed by birthday
cake, kids carnival and entertainment.
“Tommy has been part of our
family for 40 years,” said Lion LorIn celebration of Tommy Turtle’s 40th birthday, a large
raine Houston, “and the community
group of “Turtlets” came out to start the party and have

with him.”
Sharron Fikkert of the Boissevain Bakery went
above and beyond creating a special birthday
cake for Tommy.

guests at a BBQ lunch

are not government sponsored and rely solely on donations from
individuals, corporate sponsors and service clubs. Each walk is
organized by local volunteers with support from Lions Foundation

participated and supported this event through their generous donations. Special thanks to Lions Ruth and Myrtle who organized

promoting health, supporting
youth, and providing disaster

Thank you for your efforts
in annually increasing the
number of clubs involved and
the total contributions made.
During the past year 33 of our

Students wanted for travel,
fun and new experiences
S
tudents wanted: For travel, fun
and new experiences! A three
week commitment to make new
friends, have fun and see a different
country (of your choice) somewhere
in the world. You’ll only have 107
different camps to choose from. No
parents allowed!
Does that sound like something you and your community
would be interested in?
As Lions clubs, you have the
opportunity to provide that for a
youth in your community! Male or
female, between the ages of 16 and
22, and a desire to meet and learn
about new people of the world, that
is all they need, well maybe a passport too.
As a Lions club your club can
support them in different ways but
in the past some of the clubs have
provided each student with a monetary assistance package but there is
no set amount or type of assistance
that you have to provide. There is
also no limit on the number of students you can send!!
It is easier to get the students
into the exchange and camp of
their choice the earlier we put the
applications into the various YCE
chairpersons, so don’t wait tooo
long to get the applications to me.
(Hopefully I will have another
chairperson learning the ropes and
we will do it together!!) There is a
listing of the exchanges and camps
available on the LCI website – just
type in “youth camp” in the upper
right corner of the MYLCI webpage. The application forms are also
available on the website.
Give me a call if you have more
questions or need some help with
it.

How would you like to show off
Canada to the rest of the world?
5M13 Youth Camp & Exchange Program
New Chairperson needed!
H
ello fellow Lions of 5M13!
Well 3 years has gone by
pretty quickly and things change, so
I have decided to move forward and
with that come new challenges and
responsibilities. For that reason I’m
on the hunt for a new Chairperson
for the 5M13 Youth Camp and
Exchange program!
This position is an exciting one
and does require some time and
effort throughout the year, there
is no getting around it, but it is also
very rewarding as you deal with Lions
around the world and the young people
from many different cultures. Every
year you get to learn about somewhere
new and develop new friendships with
these young people. I have been more
involved on a personal basis than some
like to be but that is also part of the
uniqueness of this program, you can
be as involved as you want to be in the
actual day to day part of the exchange
and camp. You work with Manitobans
to set up some activities and you won’t
believe how much we have in this
province until you start working to
try to choose which ones to include in
your program. WOW it is just amazing
how rich we are here, with so many
things to do and see.
The chairperson is responsible
for running the budget, reviewing,
selecting applicants, identifying host
families and arranging some of the
activities of the camp and exchange.
There is lots of information about
your responsibilities in the long range
planning book, put together by the
district, and on the LCI website. You
will also communicate with the District
Governor and LCI through reports
throughout the year. You won’t be
alone! If I learned it you certainly can.
I am prepared to work with the
new chair of the YCE through this
Lions year of 2014-2015 and assist
them getting a handle on the ropes. I
would like to concentrate on promoting
the outgoing side of the program and
speak to the clubs about sponsoring a
Manitoban youth on an exchange.
I would like to thank my family,
especially my wife Lion Wanda,
for indulging my requests to be a
host family and allowing the time
commitment that permitted my full
attention to this program. Thank you
to all the Lions and their families that
have taken in an exchange student and
showed off Canadian life and Manitoba
sights and sounds.

First VP Lion Ron Findlay drives the new Lions Train, which he
created, in the Teulon Rodeo parade. There are six cars, which
are used to give children rides at the various events in which the
Lions take part.
2014 marked the 30th
anniversary of the Teulon
and Area Lions Club
Our 30th year saw the Lions
engaged in a very busy summer.
A rainy Canada Day caused the
celebrations to be moved from
an outdoor venue to Teulon Hall.
Despite that, the Lions managed to
serve a tasty turkey dinner to a large
appreciative crowd.
On the hot August 16th weekend,
we operated the canteen for the
Teulon Truck and Tractor Pull, and
had a record crowd attend! And,
we have an added attraction! A new
train! The little train is the creation
of Lion Ron Findlay who spent
months working out its plan, and
then constructing it! The Lions’ Train
has already visited a summer camp,
was on display at the Tractor Pull,
and Lion Ron proudly drove it in
the Teulon Rodeo parade, on August
23rd, We plan to make good use of it
in the future! The Teulon and Area Lions Club
look forward to its next 30 years!
New Tuelon Lion member shaves head
to raise funds for young boy
Teulon Lions newest member is a very special young woman! Cheryl Stark
shaved her head to raise funds for a local 4 year old boy! The local paper,
The Stonewall and Teulon Tribune, featured a photo of Cheryl, having her
head shaved, on the front page of their May 15th issue! We are very glad
she decided to join because she is just the type of community-minded
individual the Lions need!
