Our students have worked very hard this school year and ISTEP testing is complete. At Galveston Elementary we like to work hard and also play hard. As the year wraps up, many of our students will be attending various field trips to Chicago, Victory Field, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, to name a few, for hands on activities. We have also scheduled our track and field days for each grade to get our kids outside and keep them active. This time of year, it is always enjoyable to sit back and watch how much our students have grown, both socially and academically. I also think it is important to reflect on how the year has gone and what went well and what needs improvement. I would like to personally thank everyone at Galveston Elementary, parents, and community members for the warm welcome. Being new to a building can have its challenges; however, the students and staff have made Galveston Elementary a wonderful place to work. As we all look to summer and the new school year, I would challenge every student to enjoy summer and stay active. Happy summer, Mr. Bates MARK YOUR CALENDAR!! The information below will help parents familiarize themselves with next year’s immunization requirements: PICK UP Parents : Please remember to stop by the health clinic before the last day of school & pick up any medication your student has brought from home. Any medication remaining after the last day of school will be destroyed according to school policy. Thank you, Mrs. Diaz, RN BSN 1. 2014-2015 Requirements for all students can be found here - http:// www.in.gov/isdh/files/2014-2015_School_Reqs_Chart.pdf. There are new requirements for Kindergarten students (2 doses of Hepatitis A vaccine) and also for students in grade 12 (A booster dose of MCV4 to total 2 doses if initial dose was given before age 16). 2. All incoming 6th grade students will need one dose of Tdap to enroll. The Tdap vaccine provides protection against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. This past year, several cases of pertussis (whooping cough) were confirmed not only in Indiana, but also in Cass County. This disease is especially devastating to infants because they do not start these vaccinations until they are two months old. It is such an important vaccine, that not only does Indiana require this for our 6th graders, but the CDC also strongly recommends that expectant mothers receive a dose of Tdap during every pregnancy to provide immunity to their newborn (see http:// www.cdc.gov/vaccines/adults/rec-vac/pregnant/whooping-cough/getvaccinated.html). 3. The MCV4 vaccine is also a required vaccine for 6th grade student enrollment. It protects against meningococcal disease, which can cause an infection of the tissue around the brain and spinal cord or a serious blood infection (see http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/downloads/vismining.pdf ). This is the same vaccine that has a new requirement for incoming seniors to receive a booster dose. 4. Vaccinations that are recommended but not required include Hepatitis A, which protects against a serious liver disease (http://www.cdc.gov/ vaccines/vpd-vac/hepa/downloads/PL-dis-hepA-color-office.pdf) and Human Papilloma Virus or HPV which is recommended for and protects both girls and boys (http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/hpv/ downloads/dis-hpv-color-office.pdf). Please contact Mrs. Diaz, RN, BSN at 574-699-6687 or [email protected] if you have any questions Congratulations to What It Means to Give Your Heart to the Community Essay Contest Winners: Fifth graders in Cass County recently competed in this contest. SUMMER READING PROGRAM AT THE GALVESTON LIBRARY JUNE 1st – AUGUST 1st! Mrs. Shone, Mrs. Fewell, and Miss Bowman's students took a fantastic Earth Day field trip to Merrell Brothers and Cole Hardwoods. At Merrell Brothers they learned how leftover natural resources can be recycled. They learned about polymers and bio solids. Each child was able to sit in the Terra Gator and pretend they could drive the big monster machine they use! At Cole Hardwoods the students learned that trees are carbon neutral and the cutting down of trees to make boards is not hurting the environment as some think. Each child received their own business hat as a souvenir. It was reinforced to us several times that studying and getting a diploma is necessary for both of these businesses. How many things are more relaxing than reading a good book on a blanket out in the grass? It’s gonna be hot this summer, so grab some lemonade & take a book out in the yard - or up in a tree - or to the pool!! (Just don’t drop it in the water, lol.) The Galveston branch of the Logansport Public Library has TONS of awesome books just waiting to be checked out. We even have books on tape and books for your kindle! Our goal is for everyone to read at least 20 minutes each day. Keep track of how much time you spend reading, and you will be able to earn some fabulous prizes! Kohle Wildrick, a sixth grade student at Galveston Elementary, was injured in a 4-wheeler accident on April 6th. Along with the many prayers and good wishes for Kohle, our school decided to help the family with a "Coins for Kohle" fundraiser. The coins really added up fast and we were excited to raise $1,447.51 for the family. The students and staff will be even more excited when Kohle returns to school. A message from the Wildrick Family: To everyone at Galveston Elementary: ! We would like to thank you the prayers, support for kids, and Kohle and for all the help advancing Kohle to the 7th grade! ! Also, the kids have been excited about the banner and coins for Kohle! ! We can’t thank you enough for all of your help, support, and just making this whole process easier. ! ! ! Sincerely, Matt, Stacy, & Kohle Wildrick BATTLE OF THE BOOKS!!!! Galveston Elementary 4th and 5th grade Battle of the Books made a great showing at the Logansport Library on April 16 and 17th. The team competed both days and came in 4th place amongst all the Cass County schools. It was an entirely all girls team this year. The girls showed great work ethic in reading all the books and quizzing each other right up to when the competition started! Team members are: Natascha Haseltine, Kate Gremelspacher, Delaney Zeck, Hannah Smith, Kylie Hughes, Kyla Mennan, Kelsey Roller,Olivia Shaffer, Kassidy Henry, Hannah Plauschin, Clara Licklider. ! 4th and 5th Grades By Natascha Haseltine ! When I was on the Battle of the Books, it made me very nervous and was very hard. For EVERY battle we felt really nervous. The second day we felt really, really nervous. But at the end, we earned 3rd place. I liked it when I was in Battle of the Books because I get to earn more points for Reading Counts and it makes my grade good. Oh, I had a lot of fun. 6th graders ! Sixth grade students compete in Battle of the Books with the seventh and eighth graders. Our students were part of a team that came in 2nd at the county wide competition. Mrs. Gremelspacher is the team’s coach and is so proud of the hard work and effort of each student. Don’t forget: You should end the school year with a zero or positive lunch balance. Questions?
