CORPORATE
1
From the Desk of
MD & CEO
What do you consider as the highlights of the last quarter?
What comes to my mind are the encouraging progress we have made in
securing new contracts such as Besar, Bergading and the PFLNG turret
(see pages 4-5, 12); as well as the large number of marine repair projects
from both returning and new clients (see pages 6-7). This is a confirmation
of MMHE’s competitiveness in the marketplace, and the result of sheer effort
from our team.
Looking back, would calling 2014 a ‘challenging year’ be accurate?
I think that in MMHE, every year is a new challenge! 2014 has seen quite
considerable progress in addressing the high demands and requirements
of our customers. On the safety front, we had some incidents which show
that we must do more to ensure a safe and secure environment for staff and
subcontractors who are working in our two yards (see pages 14-15).
The year 2014 also saw a number of distinctive achievements in terms of
project delivery for our Cendor, Tapis and KBB clients. The Marine Repair team
also recorded excellent performance in ensuring safe and reliable project
delivery to our customers’ satisfaction.
Mr Dominique, how did you decide on the 2014
catchphrase of 1Heart, 1Mind, 1MMHE?
Can you give NewsWave readers a glimpse of what to expect for early 2015?
We have made substantial progress in our transformation
over the last few years. We need to maintain the effort to
improve our performance which I know we can achieve
by working better together as a team.
2015 will surely be another challenging year! We have read how major resource
owners and O&G operators will be cutting back on some of their investments
to cope with the lack of revenue as currently dictated by low oil prices. This
will invariably impact our industry and will once again, force us to be even
more cost conscious and vigilant in our spending.
1Heart, 1Mind, 1MMHE therefore reflects the solidarity
required at all levels of the organisation for more effective
communication and stronger cohesion between all.
The catchphrase also calls out to our people to be agile
and resilient in an industry landscape characterised by
changing business trends and volatile market forces (see
pages 8-10). The oil price slump in the last few months
is a clear reminder of the need to keep adapting to this
environment.
Where and when has 1Heart, 1Mind, 1MMHE been applied
in the cultural evolution of the Company?
Over the last few years, we have invested effort and
resources to initiate and sustain a high value proposition
for our staff.
Management has implemented a 5-Day Work Week;
we nurture harmony and teamwork through sports and
recreational activities; we celebrate workforce diversity
and inclusiveness in events such as 1Malaysia Celebration,
Salam Mesra Bersama MD & CEO, MMHE Live Concert
& Family Day (see pages 20-21); and we encourage a
culture of staff volunteerism for all our local community
projects (see page 16).
In terms of workforce development, the MMHE Centre
of Excellence in Pasir Gudang (see pages 2-3) will be
fully operational in early 2015, and will ensure more
comprehensive and systematic training to enhance skills
and competencies across the organisation.
The recent structural change we announced for the Offshore Business Unit
(see page 10), will require alignment and team work from all involved in this
evolution. Once again, we will innovate and look for new opportunities to
better serve our customers.
What has most influenced your thinking? How has this shaped your
leadership style?
The enthusiasm to learn and to progress has been one of my main stimuli.
MMHE is a very demanding organisation, but my task to steer it is also an
exciting and fulfilling one! The further improvements and potential changes
which can be undertaken in MMHE are very much key drivers, as are the
opportunities to push MMHE to greater glory. We must seize them.
How would you advise warga MMHE to welcome 2015?
I offer my best wishes and regards to all readers of NewsWave! This is the right
time for new resolutions to welcome the incoming year, and in that spirit, my
personal wish for each and every warga MMHE would be:
Let us maintain the highest safety standard
Be the Best, Innovate and Work as a Team
Never stop learning and challenging the status quo!

General Manager
Facilities, Assets & Services (FAST)
With the establishment of FAST, assets,
equipment and facilities are now being
managed under one roof. This one-stop
centre will drive MMHE to better control
and utilise its assets, equipment and
facilities. FAST will also improve efficiencies
in delivering services by having a clear
accountability for each responsibility, and a
cost-effective way of managing the yard.
Tell us about yourself, your career in MMHE thus far.
I joined MMHE in 1991 and have served the Company
for almost 23 years. I graduated from Politeknik Batu
Pahat with a Certificate in Mechanical Engineering and
from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with a Diploma in
Mechanical Engineering. I started my career as a Piping
Technical Executive in Marine Repair and later joined the
project team. I was the General Manager, Operation in
MBU before I was appointed as General Manager FAST
on 15 May 2014.
How has change affected you? How have you advocated
‘Transformation for Success’?
I have worked in this company since the era of Malaysia
Shipyard and Engineering.
The experience under several management teams has
better prepared me to accept and adapt to any changes
with an open mind. It is my responsibility to ensure that
my staff understand the need to change and transform.
Effective communication with them is important to
ensure the success of the organisation’s transformation
to become more efficient, productive and profitable. My
staff and I are together on this journey of ‘Transformation
for Success’.
You have been appointed to lead a high activity, high
profile portfolio aptly called FAST. Tell us about it.
The responsibility and accountability for this new position
is very high and the management has placed high
expectations on me to perform and deliver.
FAST division is a Shared Services practice, which aims
to deliver top class services to the operating units, and to
the yards.
We are tasked to improve
efficiencies in delivering services
by having a clear accountability
for each responsibility, and a cost
effective way of managing the
yard. For instance, we use a lot
of equipment in our yards both
owned and hired, such as mobile
crane, crawler crane, forklift and
other facilities for project execution.
These equipment were not used
to the maximum and needed to be
shared in reaching higher efficiency.
We can’t be renting too many
equipment with a low utilisation rate.
Our job in FAST is to monitor the
level of utilisation, and whenever
appropriate, rationalise the
equipment to ensure that we can
save cost. The Company is now
investing in our own equipment
(more information on pages 8-9)
which is good, and will lead to
higher savings by reducing external
rental.
Customer experience will also
improve as any request for
utilisation and services of assets,
equipment and facilities can be
placed or obtained with just a ‘call’
or is just a ‘click’ away.
What will be your main challenges
this year?
The main challenge will be to
make FAST a successful unit to
benefit the organisation. This
includes developing a multi-skilled
workforce to reinforce competency,
establishing good collaboration with
the operation units in ensuring a
win-win solution, and reviewing all
our internal processes to make our
organisation efficient and serviceminded.
As a respected senior among warga
MMHE, what is your guidance to
the younger generation in the
Company?
To become successful, the younger
generation must always have the
passion and the drive, and their
mindset should be directed at
contributing to the success of the
Company. This will motivate them
to work hard towards their career
satisfaction.
One important message to the
young ones – PLEASE DO NOT
hesitate to ask questions for you
will only acquire knowledge by
having the courage to ask from a
person with more knowledge and
experience.

Did you Know?
A Turret Mooring System is composed
of a fixed turret column supported by
an internal or external vessel structure
via a bearing arrangement. It allows
the Floating Production Storage and
Offloading (FPSO) unit to adopt the
direction of the extreme combination of
waves, wind and currents.
What is the use of a turret on a floating
facility i.e. FPSO/FLNG?
The turret is moored to the seabed with chains,
wires and anchors and has bearings allowing free
and unrestricted 360° rotation of the FPSO/FLNG
around the turret. The production fluid/gas can
transfer across the rotary interface while the FPSO
is weathervaning.
What are the differences between an
internal and an external turret?
Internal Turret
U
sed in medium and deepwater
application. The design is proven
to bear the harshest North Sea
conditions.
The mooring force can be
transferred easily into the hull
and it allows the vessel to remain
on location permanently.
Appropriate for large number
of risers and good fluid transfer
capabilities.
Requires dry docking during
integration.
External Turret
Used in shallow water. The
turntable/chaintable is above
sea level.
Mooring force transfer is
more likely to the main
bearing.
Limited number of risers.
The integration can be done
on the quayside.

roll-up operation started with a Job Hazard Analysis
briefing and was executed using five crawler cranes with
capacities of 350MT (two units), 400MT (two units), and
1,600MT (one unit) respectively.
The procedure involved the Row 2 panel assembly being
slowly lifted from 0 degree to 90 degrees. During the
operation, three sets of 70MT strand jack systems were
utilised as the hold-back mechanism. Through an average
stroke of 330mm and an average tension between 10MT
to 20MT, the computer-triggered strand jack rolled the
outer bend stroke-by-stroke until final touch down on the
lay-down supports.
The hold-back by strand jack system was the first
implemented in MMHE and was successful in regulating
the load transfer and preventing structure jerking. The
operation continued with skidding activity before final
fit-up and commencement of welding works.

F29 First Gas Success
Following MMHE’s delivery of F29 project
in September last year, we received news
from Sarawak Shell Berhad (SSB) that F29
achieved its first gas with zero Lost Time
Injury (LTI) on 25 October 2014.
MMHE was awarded the F29 project by SSB in 2012
and on 20 February this year, MMHE received notable
recognition from SSB when the project was awarded
with the 2013 Shell CEO HSSE & SP Award in ‘Do The
Right Thing’ Category.
In his note to the MMHE project team, Mr Zhou Dai Xue,
SSB’s Project Manager, F14 & F29 Field Development
Project, wrote, “The success of F29 project is a true
reflection of Excellent Teamwork, Collaboration,
Ownership and Performance across various departments
and subcontractors. Excellence in Project Delivery!”

Emergency Preparedness
Put to the Test
I am looking forward to the
commitment of other companies
who are also PAGEMA members
to host similar exercises in the
future. This will ensure the safety
of the industrial community in
Pasir Gudang. Today’s emergency
drill required careful, organised
and detailed coordination
between all members. That
would not have been easily
accomplished without the
understanding and cooperation of
all agencies and parties involved.
MMHE places high priority on and
continuously embeds best practices across
the Group to ensure that stringent HSE
practices are enforced for the safety of our
people, customers and the communities
within which we operate.
As an active committee member of the Pasir Gudang
Emergency Mutual Aid (PAGEMA), MMHE hosted the
PAGEMA Emergency Drill 2014 on 28 October 2014. The
programme tested the effectiveness of the emergency
response plan and evaluated the close cooperation
between relevant government agencies and the private
sector for the purpose of managing potential industry
crises in Pasir Gudang.
Present to officiate the 14th PAGEMA Emergency Drill
was YB Datuk Tee Siew Kiong, Chairman of Johor’s
Tourism, Trade and Consumerism. He was accompanied
by En Md Za’nal Haji Misran, the Yang DiPertua of Pasir
Gudang Municipal Council, MPPG Council members,
Heads of Jabatan Laut Wilayah Selatan, Jabatan
Pertahanan Awam, Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia
Negeri Johor, the Department of Environment, the Police
of Seri Alam district, and representatives from various
companies operating in the Pasir Gudang industrial area.
The emergency drill was conducted on a Mobile Offshore
Production Unit (MOPU) owned by Perisai Petroleum
Teknologi Berhad, and located in one of MMHE’s quays.
- Md Za’nal Haji Misran,
Yang DiPertua of Pasir Gudang
Municipal Council
PAGEMA plays an important
role in managing emergency
matters to ensure public
safety, and in mitigating any
environmental pollution and
damage to property during an
emergency.
- Datuk S K Tee,
Chairman of Johor’s Tourism,
Trade and Consumerism
The drill is good exposure
for MMHE to be prepared in
case of any emergency in our
yard. It is a good opportunity for
us to leverage our relationships
with PAGEMA and with the
state emergency response
authorities.

Raising the Bar on HSE Performance
Safety is paramount in MMHE’s day-to-day
operations. The health and welfare of
employees are a priority to the Company as a
healthy workforce is the key to safe operations
and high productivity.
The ‘Behaviour Based Safety Programme’ introduced this
year is expected to further encourage employees and their work
groups to consider potential incident involvement, and to assess
their own behavior as safe or unsafe at all times.
-R
osli Bin Ahmad,
Head, HSE Offshore Business Unit
MMHE has comprehensively reformed its Safe System of Work. These
improvements were carried out by the MMHE HSE Team, Project Management
Team, and Facilities, Asset & Services Team (FAST), with the objective of
raising safety standards at every stage of the operation, maintenance and
execution of any work in the yards.
In addition to revisiting the current initiatives, MMHE has also taken a proactive
measure by designing a bottom-up approach with employees as the frontline
and with support from MMHE leaders. The programme, named ‘Behaviour
Based Safety Programme’, was designed to promote interventions that
are people-focused. It incorporates one-to-one or group observations of
employees performing routine work tasks.

basic education, and healthy, safe
living conditions of the Orang
Asal Seletar fishing community of
Kampung Pasir Putih.
‘MHB Cares’ is a collaboration
between MHB and its local
environment NGO partner,
EcoKnights, with the support of
the Johor Bahru District Office
and Jabatan Kemajuan Orang
Asli (JAKOA) Negeri Johor. Staff
volunteerism is a leading factor
in ensuring the success of MHB’s
community projects.
In 2013, ‘MHB Cares’ focused on
the community’s hygiene and
living conditions. This year, MHB
staff volunteers focused on the
community’s basic nutrition and
education.
Since September to date, MHB
staff volunteers have conducted
20 community activities for the
Orang Asal Seletar including basic
English, self-motivation, healthy
lifestyle awareness and baking
classes for the adults. The children
focused on fun learning activities
such as drawing, painting, singing
and creating alphabets using play
dough.
MHB Knights of
Nature – the 2nd year
On 10 & 11 December 2014, and in conjunction with
the ‘MHB Cares’ community programme, MHB and its
NGO partner, EcoKnights organised a ‘MHB Knights of
Nature’ Sustainability Camp. This year, the camp was
held exclusively for MHB employees’ family members and
youths residing or studying in Johor.
The sustainability camp aims to educate and encourage
young adults on volunteerism and to take an active role
in community care and welfare development projects.
24 youths participated in the two-day camp. Most of
them are from universities and colleges in Johor such
as Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Netherlands
Maritime Institute of Technology.
The MHB management representative at the
Sustainability Camp was En Hisham Hanafi, General
Manager of Design & Engineering, Offshore Business Unit.
Approximately 70 Orang Asal Seletar
children and adults and 50 volunteers
from MHB dedicated their time and
effort to the CSR activities organised
by the Company.

Engaging and Enriching Employees
through ‘Lunch & Learn’ Series
As the saying goes,
‘Knowledge is King’,
and with this in mind, an
employee communication
initiative was introduced
to offer MHB employees
in Pasir Gudang and Kuala
Lumpur an opportunity to
learn of new developments
in MMHE and to also equip
and enrich themselves
with new skills and new
knowledge.
At the launch in West Yard on
20 December and at Menara
Dayabumi on 24 December,
MD & CEO Dominique de Soras
said that, “Life is after all, about
continuous learning and continuous
improvement – not just for work,
but for our personal education and
development. If you stop learning,
you stop living.”
This latest employee communication
initiative will take place at lunch
time once every month. The topic
presented at the inaugural sessions
was on ‘A Strategic Centre of
Excellence (COE)’ by En Mohd
Shakimy Mat Aris, GM of the
Programme Management Office
(PMO).
En Shakimy provided a
comprehensive briefing on the
COE’s vision which is, “To be the
capability development centre
that supports MMHE’s vision to
be the leading marine and heavy
engineering company in the
region.” An update on raising the
bar on capability building as well
as an overview of the software and
hardware aspects of COE were
outlined.
The ‘Lunch & Learn’ Series will cover
a wide range of themes and topics
– from business development to
project updates, new systems or
process learning. “Most of all,” Mr
Dominique said, “I want our people
to add new dimensions and fresh
perspectives to their work. I want
MMHE employees to educate and
enrich themselves.”
The auditorium was opened for
questions and comments after
the COE presentation. Several
staff offered suggestions for
PMO’s consideration – including
recommendations to partner
industrial/vocational institutions
and to obtain accreditations to
international standards – all of which
were components of COE’s mid to
longer term plans.
Understanding and appreciating how
others work, what they do and why, will help
us work together and work better as a team,
delivering high performance with passion
and pride.

Wendy Saw
Executive Secretary to
MHB MD & CEO
39 years of service with MMHE
How have you successfully managed
your bosses – share some tips!
Start work early so that plans for the day are organised
when your boss comes in. If you are late for work, things
can run helter-skelter. Be proactive and plan ahead!
Looking forward, what is your advice to younger
colleagues?
I take this opportunity to express my deepest thanks to
all MMHE employees for all the hard work and contribution
towards the Company. I would also like to extend my
sincere appreciation to the family members who have
given their relentless support and motivation to the award
recipients throughout their journey in MMHE. They too are
the people who we honour this evening.
My advice to my younger colleagues is not to be late for
work. You can do much more by coming early to the office.
Do your job well and take care of the Company’s interests
as if the Company belongs to you. Help one another when
the need arises. You will learn much more in this respect.
If you could turn back time, would you still join MMHE?
Yes! I am very comfortable working with all my bosses
and colleagues. There is no perfect company out there.
We have to do our part to create the best working
environment possible. MMHE will always remain a
memorable part of my working life.
– Datuk Nasarudin Md Idris,
MHB Chairman
Corporate Communications,

Club and the Human
Resource Department
once again organised the
Company’s annual Long
Service Awards (LSA)
to honour and celebrate the
commitment and loyalty
of MMHE employees who
have contributed decades of
service to MHB.
MHB’s LSA programme recognises
employees who have served 20,
25, 30 and 35 years of employment
with the Company. The LSA event
has been staged every year since
2002. This year’s 48 recipients were
treated to a special dinner held at
Double Tree by Hilton Johor Bahru
Hotel on 17 October 2014.
En Abu Bakar Zakaria, a veteran
with 35 years of service with
Offshore Business Unit, has been
working since 1 February 1979.
He shared his feelings with the
NewsWave editorial team:
I’m very happy and
honoured to be with MMHE.
The working environment
and my co-workers are the
main reason why I’m able
to work here for 35 years.
I wish the Company more
prosperity in the years to
come.
Abdul Haris Mohmat Md Jaffri
General Manager of Production &
Operation, Marine Repair Business Unit
24 years of service with MMHE
You have seen MMHE undergo a lot of
changes – how has this affected you?
I’ve seen the business grow from just vessel repair work
to refurbishment and life extension projects, conversion,
and oil & gas construction. A lot has been achieved by
the Company. MMHE’s growth has provided me with
challenges and opportunities for my career development
by involving me in various major projects.
Who and what have most influenced & shaped your time
here?
It was my former superior/boss back in the early days of
my employment who provided opportunities for me to
learn and make me appreciate the different management
styles that I have seen until today.
What is your advice to new joiners or existing staff
affected by our transformation?
If we don’t change or keep up with our competitors, we
will be like the Malaysian tiger slowly disappearing from the
jungles of Malaysia.
Be committed. Have the right attitude and behaviour and you
will go far.

Excitement filled the air during the 2-day celebration of

the much-awaited MMHE Concert Live! – a pop-rock concert
to entertain all generations of warga MMHE.
The concert was held ‘live’ at
Stadium Perbandaran Pasir Gudang.
Warga MMHE and their families filled
the stadium as early as 7.45pm.
Mr Dominique welcomed everyone
saying that, “At MHHE, we want to
balance our professional lives with
our personal lives. Family is the most
important aspect of our existence,
but most of us spend more hours
at the office and yard than at home
with our loved ones. That can only
mean one thing – we work for our
loved ones.”

The night then continued with the

Another major activity which many employees looked
forward to was the ‘Back to School Sale’. This year, as
part of the Family Day 2014 event, the sale was organised
at Stadium Perbandaran Pasir Gudang. To cater to the
busy schedule of MMHE staff, the sale was held over two
days starting Thursday, 13 November till Friday evening
on 14 November.
On 15 November morning, warga
MMHE were greeted with bright
sunny weather. About 9,300 staff
and their families turned up at
Padang Perbandaran Pasir Gudang
to continue celebrating the MMHE
Family Day 2014. They collected
their souvenirs and food/drinks at
the registration counters and then
proceeded to the display booths
showcasing MMHE milestones &

Without fail, there were plenty of
inter-department tele-matches,
family games, lucky draws and
children’s colouring contests to
keep staff and family members fully
occupied - including free flow of
ice cream!
The MMHE Academic Excellence
Awards for 2014 were presented
to 44 children of MMHE staff.
These high achievers received cash
incentives from Mr Dominique. There
were 15 recipients for UPSR, 20
recipients for PMR and 9 recipients
for SPM. For each category, each
child received RM300 for UPSR,
RM500 for PMR and RM700 for

achieved excellent results during the
major primary and secondary school
examinations held in 2013.
Highlight of the Family Day 2014
was the divisional contests between
OBU, MBU and the Corporate
support divisions. This was won by
MBU! The deserving winners took
home a cash prize of RM4,000.
Most warga MMHE took this opportunity to purchase
their children’s school items such as uniforms, shoes, and
books. The ‘Back to School Sale’ is one of the ways the
Company helps to ease the burden of the staff by giving
them the opportunity to purchase their children’s school
items and to pay for them in monthly instalments.
The corporate booth provided staff an opportunity
to show their families the yard projects and
activities they were/are involved in.
