is saving lives, to the power of “big data” being harnessed to prevent infections
before they start, to a tool developed at our Hospital to better support patients
facing life-limiting illnesses.

This year, Middlesex Hospital launched a new, standard, color-coded uniform policy for clinical staff. Multiple studies have
shown that when patients are able to identify their caregivers, their satisfaction increases. The policy was a direct response
to feedback we received from our patients that supported this research.

INNOVATION
Lung Screening Detects Cancer
in Earliest Stages
Jack Martins, a U.S. Marine veteran, smoked
four packs of cigarettes a day for 53 years.
That was until 2013, when he discovered he
had lung cancer.
incurable. Veterans are at higher risk for lung
cancer than civilian populations because of
higher smoking rates and exposure to known
carcinogens during active duty.
In November of that year, Jack’s wife, Marianne,
happened to be watching a news broadcast
on WTNH-TV. Health reporter Jocelyn Maminta
was reporting on an annual lung cancer screening
program for veterans offered at the Middlesex
Hospital Cancer Center. The program provides
free, low-dose CT scans for veterans who are
current smokers or have an extended history
of smoking.
The low-dose CT program at Middlesex Hospital
was an innovator in the effort to detect early- stage
lung cancer. Detecting lung cancer at an early
stage through screening provides the best
chance for cure. Middlesex Hospital recommends
screening for current and former smokers aged
55-74. The test takes 10 minutes and is covered
by private insurance and Medicare.
Jack’s wife knew that Jack was a perfect
candidate for the screening, so she encouraged
him to attend the event the next day. A few
days after the screening, Jack got the news.
He had Stage 1a lung cancer and would have
to undergo surgery to remove the cancerous
nodule on his lung. That was the same day that
Jack stopped smoking.
Lung cancer kills more people than prostate
cancer, breast cancer and colon cancer combined.
There are typically no symptoms until the cancer
has advanced to a late stage, which is normally

cancer was detected at the earliest stage,
he did not have to undergo chemotherapy
or radiation.
After his ordeal, Jack sent a personal e-mail to
Maminta, thanking her for helping Middlesex
Hospital to spread the word about the veterans
lung screening. Jack himself has now become
an ambassador for the program, promoting the
screening to other veterans, friends and family.
“I tell everyone I meet about the screening,”
Jack says.

IN TECHNOLOGY
A Computerized “Brain”
Helps Save Lives
Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening complication
of an infection. Sepsis occurs when chemicals
released into the bloodstream to fight the infection
trigger inflammatory responses throughout the
body. This inflammation can trigger a cascade of
changes that can damage multiple organ systems,
causing them to fail.
If sepsis progresses to septic shock, blood pressure
drops dramatically, which may lead to death.
Anyone can develop sepsis, but it’s most common
and most dangerous in older adults or those with
weakened immune systems. Early treatment
of sepsis, usually with antibiotics and large
amounts of intravenous fluids, improves chances
for survival.1
According to the Institute for Health Improvement,
sepsis is a significant problem, with severe
sepsis and septic shock affecting more than
750,000 people in the United States each year,
with mortality rates as high as 30-50 percent.
Middlesex Hospital is now using a special
computer “brain” as part of its Electronic
Health Record (EHR), to prevent deaths
from sepsis.
The electronic brain is called the “St. John’s
Sepsis Tool.” As information about a patient’s
condition is added into the electronic health
record (EHR) on the computer, the program
continually monitors numerous parameters and
follows an established algorithm to identify
patients who may have sepsis – and then alerts
clinicians immediately. Evidence has shown that
this system will often identify people who are
in the early stages of sepsis before it becomes
clinically apparent to doctors, nurses or other
clinical staff. Moreover, this same computer
program can also act as an early warning system
to identify a patient showing signs of possible
clinical deterioration, even if not from sepsis.
Although Middlesex Hospital was already below
the national average for sepsis deaths – and
has one of the lowest rates in the state – the
Hospital has lowered its rate of sepsis deaths
by 21% and length of stay for sepsis patients by
5%, since it began using the new computerized
tool in early 2014. In addition, the tool has helped
dramatically increase the early identification of
patients with sepsis between 2013 and 2014 –
by more than 30%.

A New Approach Adds Comfort
and Support
Being told you have a life-limiting illness is
difficult news to absorb for both patients and
their families. The natural reaction of most
patients, and their physicians, is to choose the
option to fight the illness at any cost. But often,
there is a lot of pain and suffering that goes
along with aggressive treatment. By utilizing
palliative care and hospice services when
appropriate, patients and their families can
have the added option of comfort and improved
quality of life. In fact, it has been shown that,
in some cases, patients who are referred to
palliative and hospice services earlier in the
process of their illness often live longer than
if they had not received these services.
The Middlesex Hospital Hospice and Palliative
Care program has developed a groundbreaking
assessment tool to determine whether or not
a patient can benefit from palliative or hospice
care services. The tool is called the “Decision
Aid for Palliative Referral” (DAPR) and it is the
first, evidence-based, hospice and palliative
care screening tool available anywhere.
The assessment, which collects specific
data about a patient’s health condition,
physical symptoms, psychosocial, financial
and spiritual concerns, is currently being
introduced to physicians and other clinical

staff at Middlesex Hospital. The tool is intended to
help them screen patients and make referrals for
those who meet the critieria for palliative care or
hospice services.

Program, “Hospice and palliative care are not
about dying. They are truly about trying to live
to the best of one’s ability, until the moment you
die.” The goal of the new DAPR assessment tool
is to do just that for patients – help them live out
their lives to the fullest, with as much comfort and
support as possible.

INNOVATION
Partners for a Healthy Community
What do pink hair, volleyballs, cars and music have in
common? These are just a few of the creative fundraisers
that Middlesex Hospital’s community partners have
organized to benefit the Hospital.
Fundraising events often require substantial resources in
terms of project costs and staff time. We are fortunate that
our community partners have become such strong advocates
of the Hospital that they have dedicated countless hours to
organizing major fundraisers on our behalf, attracting new
people to the cause and nearly doubling the proceeds from
these events over the past three years.
Since 2012, we have gone from less than twenty partners
organizing community fundraising events to nearly 70
partners in 2014.
Middlesex Hospital is grateful to partner with these
outstanding community businesses and organizations,
and many others, to improve the health and well being
of individuals throughout our community.
The goPINK Project, which takes
place in October during breast
cancer awareness month, was
started by EG Salon in 2010 and
now involves 40 businesses who
have raised over $100,000 to benefit
our Cancer Center.

The longest standing community fundraising
event to benefit the Hospital is the Hospice
Golf Tournament, which was started nearly three
decades ago by community volunteers at the
Portland Golf Course. To date, the tournament
has raised over $500,000.
Last fall, Reynolds Subaru selected the
Middlesex Hospital Shoreline
Medical Center as a beneficiary of its
national “Share the Love” fundraiser, in
which up to $250 was donated for each car
sold during the promotion for a total of $9,000.
Additional support has come from
such innovative community events
as Tanger Outlets’ “Pink Style”
coupon sales, the “No Beach
Volleyball Tournament” in
Middlefield, the Westbrook Elks’
“Beach Jam for Breast Cancer” on
the Connecticut shoreline and the
annual “Appetite For Life.” Even the
simplest fundraisers can have an
impact, including high school and
middle school sports teams who
raise funds to support the Hospital
throughout the year.

Westbrook. The event featured public tours of the facility as well as a health fair. The Medical Center also now houses the Valentine H. Zahn
Community Gallery, which features rotating exhibitions of work by local professional, amateur and student artists.

supporting the Middlesex Hospital Comprehensive Breast
Center by raising funds from special events throughout the
year. In 2014, members of the Peszynski family presented a
check for $32,500 to the Center. To date, the Foundation and
Paul’s and Sandy’s Too have donated a total of $143,910 to
the hospital for breast cancer services.
