2nd Grade Summer Reading List
Junior School Summer Reading 2016 Philosophy: Shady Side Academy is a community of readers, and summer reading is an extension of our curriculum. All students are expected and encouraged to read throughout the summer primarily for enjoyment. Reading as a leisure activity is the best predictor of comprehension, vocabulary, and reading speed. Required Summer Reading Activity: You are to read three books from the list below and complete a Tic-‐‑Tac-‐‑Toe Activity for each book. You must choose a different activity for each book. The completed activities are to be returned to your new teacher when you return to school. Grade specific directions and templates are included in your summer packet. These materials are to be kept and used as needed during the summer. Grade Two Reading Choices* Students should choose to read at least three books from those listed below. Dear Parents,
This summer all Junior School students entering grades 1-5 will receive a summer reading TicTac-Toe Folder. This letter and all the contents of the folder are also available as a PDF on
teacher pages and at shadysideacademy.org/summer reading.
All children should choose and read at least three books from their grade’s summer reading list.
When children finish reading a book, they must complete one of the suggested Tic-Tac-Toe
Board Activities in the folder. All response work should be done on the included templates (if
applicable). Upon completion of an activity, glue the corresponding Tic-Tac-Toe piece to the
blank board and keep the finished work sample in the folder. When the children return to school
in August, the folders with three Tic-Tac-Toe board pieces attached and completed responses
should be turned into their new homeroom teachers. (In grade 5, all materials go to Mrs.
Anselmo.)
Each grade’s Tic-Tac-Toe board activities are unique with appropriate grade level literature
responses. A sincere effort was made to offer a variety of responses, so that every child could
find a way to respond to their reading in a way that appealed to them as a learner. As teachers,
we intentionally focused on writing responses as a way to continue the important work we all did
this year in Writing Workshop. There are nine activities to choose from on each board. Children
are required to complete only three activities (students must choose 3 different activities)
Specific directions for each activity are in the folder. We hope your children enjoy reading and
writing this summer!
Sincerely,
Junior School Teachers Grades 1- 5
